So, I heard about Sonic a couple years back from a teacher. He kept telling us that he saw an ad for it on TV but had never seen one in real life. Therefore, when I headed off to Sonic, I was really excited. When I got there, I went crazy over the set up. They have parking spots with menus and voice boxes to take your order lined up. When your order is done, they come out on roller skates to give it to you. For the actual food, get one of their drinks and TATER TOTS! I got a beef burrito with tater tots, and it was good, but not as amazing as the tater tots alone (don't forget to ask for ketchup or whatever sauce they may have) and the drinks. Tater tots are one of my favorite things in the world, because they are simply hashbrowns in easier to eat form. The tater tots were really cruncy and crispy. Really good. Plus, I don't think I've encountered tater tots before at any fast food place. And the drinks. We got a sparkling limeade (they ran out of lemonade) and a caramel malt. Caramel malt was pretty good. Tasted slightly caramel, little malt flavor. Very thick and pretty sweet as well. I think another flavor would have been better though. The sparkling limeade was TASTY! They put "real" purreed strawberry bits in with lime and soda/sparkling/some kind of bubbly water. YUMMY. But my favorite part was the ice. Yes, the ice. It's the small little cylinders that are the size of your pinky fingernail. The ones that people sometimes use in sports icepacks for injuries. Yes, those ones. I'm the type of person who really likes to eat ice, and those ice "cubes", the sport icepack ones, are the softest and easiest to chew. They're frozen in a way that they break down very easily when you bite on them. REALLY tasty. So if you're crazy about ice like I am, go to Sonic and get one of the sparkling lemonade or strawberry lemonade cooler things. And then enjoy your ice. read more

We stopped by here before getting on HWY 5 for LA; my friend suggested that we eat here since I hadn't tried Sonic before. I rarely eat an actual fast food meal but I make exceptions for eating at new joints. Seemed like an interesting setup, no indoor seating or bathrooms it seemed. Only stations where you can park your car and order? We chose to sit in the outdoor area where you have a ordering station that takes your order. The food choices were different from McD or BK, they had hot dogs, burrito wrap things, and sandwich things. Luckily a ordered a normal sized burger (not a big one), fries, and a drink. The food is alright, not horribly bad... but not that good either. I can see why there are not that many locations. In-and-out obviously still had better food. They should have a bathroom or hand wipes available for people who eat in the outdoor area and even for the people who eat in the car spaces. I probably will not stop to eat here again unless I absolutely had no other choice to eat here. read more

Not sure if it's the novelty of having a car hop bring me my fast food, or the simple fact that I can't order a combination of tater tots and a chicago dog at any fast food joints near me. Wow Sonic has really taken a massive downswing since our last visit. I used to really love going to any Sonic I can find, and this one happens to be the closest to where I live. We have always loved stopping in here on the way home to San Jose when we pass through Gilroy. The restroom was horrid and disgusting. I didn't even want to stand in that restroom but when you gotta go, you gotta go. I have no idea what kind of pigs and other assorted trailer trash must have been using it that day, but you know, it's really not that hard to NOT make the kind of mess that was in there as a user, and even less hard to keep a restroom clean as a worker. It just needs to be checked on every so often. The onion rings had something VERY wrong with them, like someone had added something to the oil they are fried in that made them taste unlike any onion ring I have ever tasted. Add to this the fact that pieces of the "popcorn" chicken found their way into our limp and soggy (!) french fries and you get a "I don't think I will ever be back to this place again" reaction. Quality Control is not THAT hard to execute, but at this location it is painfully non-existent. YUCK. Have all Sonic locations turned to crap? I sure hope not. The only good thing we got here were the slushy drinks -- but is it even possible to mess that up? read more

I've never been so enticed by a damn commercial in my life. I felt like I was in the "Harold and Kumar" movie looking for that damn Sonic Drive-In my whole life, but thankfully not as bonkers. Truthfully though, the only things worth getting was their chili cheese tots and the lime limeade we ordered. Other than that, their burgers weren't as delicious as the commercials made it out to be. I was actually more impressed with their selection of drinks: juice, milk, limeades, slushes, smoothies, iced teas, and obviously soft drinks...where can you get that these days?! But...I have to say driving up to your own private drive-in window and pressing a button whenever you're ready to order is pretty spiffy brilliant. As well as food that is roller skated to your car, old school style. When I left, I saw they had a $2.99 meal and shake deal which I will have to try next time I'm shopping at Gilroy. read more

I LOVE SONICS. I guess I'm not like everyone else who prefers to get their burgers at In-N-out. I actually think sonic's burgers are better. They are absolutely delicious. I usually get the bacon cheeseburger and it is sooooo good. I've also tried the chicken wrap, tots, mozzarella sticks, and onion rings. Those are all pretty good too. I've been coming to this Sonic for over 15 years. The food and services have been getting worse and worse. Our food today was completely trash. My chicken sandwich was stale, not cold but room temp. It was rubbery and had NO flavor. Fries were stale. Nothing about this experience today was good. I'll probably not be coming back for a long long time. read more

What goes better with a freezing, rainy day than a fruit slushy from Sonics? Umm...the cheesy tots or maybe one of their blizzards I would say. Which was exactly my first impromptu experience at this restaurant. My cousin coaxed us into stopping here on our drive back from a baby shower in Hollister and I am completely grateful for it. I tried the lemon slush and it was sooooo good. It reminded me of a frozen lemonade from Great America!!! Yes, it was that good. The hubby got a raspberry ice tea slush which was very tasty. The cuzzos got the Oreo blizzard which is ice cream blended with whole Oreos (bomb!) and they also ordered the cheesy tots which were a good touch since they were warm and we were absolutely freezing. All in all a good first experience at this location. The service was fast and friendly. The feel of the restaurant is neat because they bring your food out to you on skates or rolllerblades. A must try if you are in the area. I will definitely be back to try other things on the menu. read more

I have been here 4 times since they opened. The original Sonic Burger is pretty good. The fries,tater tots, chili fries, hot dog, chili dog, jalapeno poppers and chicken sandwich are trash. Also getting a banana with a kids meal is a horrible idea. The bananas they handed me with a straight face looked more like greenish black brownish rotten drumsticks. I don't know where they get there bananas from but they are old, not ripe, not from South America, and not worth getting as a healthy alternative because they look about as healthy as the guy chain smoking in front of the aids clinic in the wheelchair. I went over the first day they opened and big kudos to the guy manager on the roller blades who thinks he's way to cool for school cuz his fruit booting (rollerblading) skills are top notch. You helped entertain me with your ridiculous antics during my 45 minute wait in the drive thru (ouch). The happy hour special from 2-4pm everyday kicks ass. All drinks are 1/2 off. The slushies, smoothies etc they have there have REAL pieces of fruit in them along with chunks of lime/lemon. All in all getting a big 44 oz slushie with all the fresh fruit in it for about a buck beats the hell out of Jamba Juice (even if it's not quite as good it's 1/5 the price. After years of taunting commercials...hearing from friends and relatives that have lived in different states and have been to Sonic... AT LAST! I can say I've eaten there!!! I know.. I know.. kinda far for just fast food, right? Well seems like some fellow yelpers would have to agree.. it's like a dream come true right? Decent food but really great drinks. The fact that you can order tater tots instead of fries is a definite plus. Burgers are okay but nothing to really get excited over. The most important thing for parents of small children is the fact that you can order, pay for, and consume your food without waking the cranky baby/toddler in the back seat are very, very important. Since it is right on 152, it really helps when leaving on a road trip or coming back home after bedtime. read more

Sonic is actually really good for fast food. 3 stars is basically about as high as you're ever going to see me rate a fast food restaurant. They have decent tater tots and my girlfriend likes their cherry limeade. I also kind of like the fact that they have a burrito which is stuffed with fritos. Fun. Still, it's fast food, so you know it's not particularly high quality. But as far as fast food goes, you could do a lot worse than Sonic. Good for a quick snack when we're driving to LA. read more

I went to the Gilroy Sonic on their opening weekend. This was my first experience with Sonic. We were planning on the drive-thru because the stall line was long, but we got lucky and were able to park. I did like having the menu there to palce our order. It came out pretty quick too! The "server" came out on her skates, which did impress me!! I didn't have food, just a blast. It was HUGE and very yummy! I have plans to go back and try some food! Always heard of this place and never thought the journey to this place was really worth the hype that I've heard of. My first and only time there but I thought the order I got was delicious and service was pretty cool. After pulling up to the parking slot, there was someone on the machine already ready to take our order. The wait time for our orders was very fast, probably no less than 5 minutes after we ordered. The whole retro&old school drive in fast food restaurant atmosphere felt nice and welcoming. The feeling made me admire the period of time when joints like these were more predominate. Overall, the service honestly was the best I've received compared to any other standard fast food drive in restaurant. In saying all that, I doubt the food was all that GREAT enough to drive a half hour from where I live for food but I'd definitely go with a handful of good friends for a mini road trip and real good food. 4/5 since it was my first experience. read more

So, for the second time in less than a month their ice cream machine is broken. Last time, after waiting in the drive through line for 15 minutes, get to the ordering box and there get told that there is no ice cream Aghhhhh!!! Tonight, pulled into one of the drive up stalls at 815, push the button to order. 20 minutes later after no response, we move over to the drive through line which has gotten shorter. Then we over hear the employees telling the car next to us that all the stalls were closed, and that they were out of ice cream AGAIN! !!! Absolutely ridiculous, they should at least put a sign out so you can decide before you wait 25 minutes for nothing! !! Get it together people. read more

Beware of bad customer service!! This location is so SLOW. First, we parked in a stall with a non-working order screen. Pressing the red button did nothing. We drove to the drive-thru lane but had to wait a long time and no one came online to take our order. We drove back to a different stall and finally were able to place our drink order. We waited a long time, over 20 mins. My son walked into the store and was reassured that our order would be filled in a couple minutes. We were told to drive back to the stall and wait. BEWARE: NARROW PARKING STALLS EASILY DAMAGE CARS WHILE OWNERS BLAMING CUSTOMERS??? Our story. We stopped through on our way out 152 to eat inside. We parked in one or the super narrow outside order stalls that were so narrow we couldnt actually get of either doors easily (and we aren't big people). After we learned we couldnt eat inside we decided to go elsewhere. I backed straight out and promptly sheared off the mirror on the right side of the car. There are heavy duty steel structures on either side of the car that cause damage to cars... in words of one of the workers that witnessed it with a laugh.."it happens all the time". So, no food, a damaged car (over $1000 for the mirror assembly on Amazon, and probably $500 to install) ... and this response from the owner of Sonic. I'll leave the person's name out for now.. Hello "Customer": Im the area supervisor for Sonic Drive in. Our insurance does not cover damage to auto caused by your driving and hitting part of our property. On the contrary you or your insurance is liable for any damage to our stalls as the poles are considered part of the building property. He said the forks were in the bag and went off. There was 1 fork and it was a large order for 3 of us. Also, we only got like 2 napkins. I had to wait to chase him down to ask for more forks and napkins. While he had some in his belt apron thingie, he disappeared back into the shop and brought some out. It wasn't until after we finished eating our main food (spicy chicken sandwiches) and were driving that I noticed they didn't give us ketchup or bbq sauce (for the fries and popcorn chicken) that we asked for. When you live in a big city for an extended period of time, you grow accustomed to it, often taking for granted the amount of places to eat in your proximity as well as being able to go to these places anytime you want to. I lived in Las Vegas for a while and was surrounded by Sonic restaurants in all directions. Once I moved back to Monterey County, there wasn't one in sight, including Gilroy, because it still didn't exist. Now that there's a Sonic that's kind of close, I ensure that I go every chance I get. I make sure that I always get the Strawberry Limeade with any combo that I get. I like the fact that there are real strawberries in the limeade, a definite plus. I also really enjoy their Chicken Club Toaster and Onion Rings. All of the variations of their blasts are also very good. I have found that aside from maybe In-N-Out Burger that Sonic probably has one of the better fast food burgers that I've had. There are also many ways to enjoy your food. You can drive up to a number of their stalls, order food and have a carhop take it to you, you can sit outside or utilize the drive-thru if you're in a hurry. Saw this while driving by and we had to try it! We've all heard and seen the commercials so everyone was curious. I ended up trying the breakfast burrito ($2.99) and it was pretty yums! I liked how their prices were still "fast food" prices unlike some other joints where its actually pretty expensive unless you go for the dollar menu! My fav part was the "park-your-car-and-order-and-they-roller-skate-up-to-bring-your-food" !! Um helloo!! If all fast food places had that I would be eating it a lot more =) Fun and interesting experience- dunno if I would drive out JUST to eat here but if I do see one (not too many around here) and my stomach isn't bursting, I wouldn't mind stopping by again. read more

I wish there were more Sonic Drive-Ins around Cali. I did a map search and the only Sonic restaurants are 20 miles off the 5 freeway and sprinkled in random places in Cali (like Gilroy). If you're going to the outlets, stop by Sonic. If you're making your drive from the Peninsula to LA, stop by Sonic. What should you get? Of course the drinks! Limeade Chiller: SO good-- a creamy blend of ice cream and sweet slush. A solid combo is strawberry and lime = strawberry limeade chillder. (5/5) Limeade Slush: It's another version of the Chiller but without the ice cream. Definitely go for it if you're craving something more slurpee-like. (4.5 / 5) The Strawberry Flavor: I love this flavor because you'll taste little chunks of strawberry, so you know you're not just getting strawberry-flavored syrup. It's kind of like how Red Robin gives you chunks of sweet strawberries in their strawberry lemonade. :) Side note: Add an additional $0.10 for additional flavors. So strawberry + lemon = the first flavor is a given with the drink, the second flavor is an additional $0.10. Happy Hours: These are great deals where drinks are half off (something like that) between the hours of 2-4 pm. Super good deal. :) Tater Tots: Another win! I love it with chili and cheese. Delicious! Onion Rings: Delicious! Sweet yellow onions dipped in a perfectly seasoned batter. The outside is nice and crispy (not soggy at all). I was never left with a bite where I ended up pulling out the entire onion, so I always got a good bite of the onion ring. Coney Island Foot-Long Hot Dog: The bread is soft, the chili delicious and the hot dog is... thin and long. haha. In all seriousness, I told the bf that he would regret ordering that at 10:30 am, but he didn't and he loved it. I had a bite and it wasn't bad for a $2.99 foot-long hot dog. Sonic is fun because you park your car under and awning and place your order in an intercom. Then a carhop brings your food out on a tray and rollerblades / rollerskates out to your car. Fun, huh? :) Most people will take the food to go or eat in the car. So convenient! read more

Definitely won't waste my time on a road trip going out of my way to visit this place again.. Here's why: 1.) All their food is ridiculously caloric. I mean I know it is fast food but still...you'd be better off getting an double double from in n out. 2.) Their fries are bland, undersalted, and too greasy. 3.) The few times that I've been here, it has taken quite a while to get my order. 4.) Their bathroom was DISGUSTING!! That's why I stopped here in the first place. 5.) The burger was just subpar. Really nothing special at all. There is too much bun and it overpowers the food. What is kind of cool though is the old school drive in feel. You drive into a parking spot and order from a menu right next to you. You can take your time deciding what you want, and THEN press a button to order from the employee. I'm indecisive and like to take my time deciding so this is nice. I mean, this place is just average at best. I'd definitely rather have In N Out, the Habit, or even Wendy's.. If there is absolutely nothing else to eat then I'd go again, but otherwise do your body a favor and get some better food. read more

Totally bummed about our cold burgers!! We stopped here on our way out of the southbay thinking we'd have hot fresh burgers and fries. Totally disappointed!! The place was packed, as it was a Sunday evening and many families were stopping for dinner. Well since we didn't eat our food at the dine in we drive away with our cold burgers!! The cheese wasn't even melted!! The tater tots were cold, maybe there were a few warm ones but I don't recall. I always see the commercials about Sonic and want to try it, now I know why there are not many of them out here. Always nice service and good food. I usually stop here on my way south out of the Bay Area. Their breakfast is pretty good. That's all I usually get since I leave in the mornings. I've had a couple slushes, and of course those are tasty and refreshing. It's a fun place, and pretty quiet considering it's location.
