Okay. I'm from Virginia and we are constantly seeing ads for this place and the nearest one is forty miles away. How that adds up, I have no idea. Anyways. We came here for the first time last year when we went to Jockey's Ridge. I wasn't impressed with their chicken last time, but their fries were good, the strawberry slushie was delicious and the onion rings are out of this world (they must use a sweet onion or something). This time, I got a double cheeseburger (I NEVER eat fast food burgers), a medium fry and a large onion ring with a cup of sweet tea (because southern style sweet tea is the only tea anyone should ever drink). The tea was not as good as I was hoping. However, the burger was delicious (and I'm not going to lie, I have REALLY high burger standards) and the onion rings, as always, we hot, sweet and utterly delicious. I also appreciated that their fries aren't covered in salt like at McDonalds, they're just GOOD. My boyfriend got the Ring Leader burger (which was topped with bacon and an onion ring) as well as a foot-long chili dog. He was raving about the burger the entire time he was eating it, but once he got to the hot dog, he seemed far less pleased. He said the taste and texture were not up to par (and were probably sausage based, the type of hot dog he likes least). When you finally get to the speaker, you have to wait forever just to speak with someone. They removed the option to order ahead for this location, which means they don't offer half-priced drinks like EVERY other location. They also don't have any signs on the outdoor order boxes to inform you that they won't take your order out there. Seriously, don't waste your time or money here. We stayed at a vacation house right behind sonic. First time we went there in the day to get a couple bags of ice. The wait ended up taking over 20 minutes! FOR ICE! Like go get it out of the freezer and bring it out, I don't understand why it should take more than 5 minutes. Second time we went there to get some late night food. Their website and Google profile says they close at midnight every night. We showed up at 10:45 and they tell us they close at 11, and that everything in the kitchen was already turned off, so we were out of luck. We went back and forth over when they are really supposed to close, but it was obvious they were in a rush to get out of there. We visited around 10:45 to pick up something for a late breakfast before leaving town. We pulled into a stall and were told they were experiencing technical difficulties so could help us in the drive-thru. There were 6-7 cars ahead of us and it took approx 15 mins to get our food. I know from experience with my local sonic that a packet of ketchup or picante sauce with a breakfast burrito is standard along with napkins, mint and salt packet. We received none of that in our bag. Not even the bare minimum of napkins. read more

Last year we had a horrific experience where an employee named Tabrina swore at the kids and actually threw change at one of them. THREW IT!!!!! I called and emailed repeatedly for a year and never received a reply. This year, the kids (aged 14-20) went again for some shakes. They weren't served as they were only taking orders from the drive-thru. They came back got a car and waited nearly TWO hours in the drive-thru. Absolutely appalled. We just went to the sonic in Nags Head in an effort to get food safely. The drive up options were closed so we waited in the drive through line for about 45 mins only to get to the window and see a sign that says they are low staff due to Covid. This is completely understandable.However, NO ONE at the establishment was wearing a mask. When we got the the window we kindly told the young man working that we didn't want our food anymore because none of them had on masks to which he replies "ok so put one on." Come and my family came down here last year and tried to go through the sonic drive thru at night because online they said they were open but they weren't. So this year we tried to go for a late lunch around 2:15. We pulled into one of the spots and I pressed the button to order. Someone came over the speaker like a minute later saying they would be right with us. I waited for maybe 2-3 minutes and then I pressed the button again. I waited.... A different person came over the speaker but I couldn't tell what they said so I said what and then no one came back over the speaker. We pulled out of the spot and tried the drive thru which had 3 other cars infront of us. The car up at the speaker waited maybe 3 minutes before I even heard anyone talking. We heard the people in the care saying they could pull back around or something. At that point we just decided to go to the KFC/Taco Bell down the street and they were 100 times better. Do not recommend this location at all! I know they don't have the staff but then they should just close because the service is that bad. read more

The same old Sonic, decent food, great staff. I had the Chicken Sandwich for the first time yesterday, it was Delicious! Tots were the same as usual. Had a Banana shake today, Mmm! Cranberry Limeade is a nice change from the regular Cherry Limeade but I still love the original.... thought I may have a new favorite... i just realized today that Sonic may be one of thee most unhealthy fast foods there is. There's no salad option on the menu or anything remotely healthy. The closest thing you can get is the Chicken Strip Wrap because it looks like it have a leaf or two of lettuce in it. Great for kids! Family beach weeks can be expensive, Sonic is a great place to take the family for ice cream. Good stuff, not the best but very reasonably priced. My kids loved it! I'm from New York, which I feel is generally a good thing. However as far I as can tell there are no Sonic's in Manhattan, which I now know is a good thing. Let me preface this by saying I love fast food. I am also extremely overweight and have a lot of acne from the trans fat that I regularly consume and so i feel as though I qualify as a fast food expert. With that said I have never been to Sonic so i can't tell if this one is just an anomaly or what. Going to this Sonic was like going to fast food hell. Now, not to be mean, but the women working there were basically cows. I thought this was a good sign. I was wrong. I ordered the chicken tots and the pretzel hotdog. My bud ordered the cheeseburger and the onion rings. Nice variety. Neither of us had the courage to order the soda that you can add candy to. But neither of us likes diabetes. I mean who thought it would be smart to add nerds candy to coke? Here's the deal. Anything that was fried basically tasted like nerds candy. It's as if they spilled nerds candy into the oil. And then fried the nerds for hours until they disintegrated. And then fried about 100 things in the oil. And then left it overnight. And then used it again to fry our food. The result is that if you eat anything that was fried in this oil the taste of nerds and rotten oil will stay in your mouth. For hours. Until it begins to clog your arteries. Interestingly after going to Sonic I got a heart catherization two days later, and you know what they found? Congealed nerds candy in my left anterior descending artery. I can show you the report if you don't believe me. Now once again I can't say whether this was just an abnormal experience or if this is a common experience at Sonic, but I am not going back to find out. read more

I usually love sonic, so it's sad that I have to give this one star. The wait was horrible, it took us 45 minutes to get our food. When I placed the order, I asked if the jr burger (kids meal) had cheese, she said I could make changes to the burger if need be. I specifically stated no cheese because my son is allergic to dairy. Well....it came with cheese. We waited 45 minutes for something he couldn't eat. They forgot the fries with my meal. Also during the wait, we noticed a cockroach that was at least an inch long by the door. You could also see a mess inside, all over the floor. There was spilled drinks and food that no one bothered to clean. If I had seen this before, I wouldn't have ordered. When we complained, the manager came out and told us "just so you know you can wait another 45 minutes." and we proceeded to wait and he came out another time and told us we could not be served and we needed to leave. I've been coming to this sonic for many years, and let me just say each year it gets worse. They accused my friend of moving spots after they ordered, but they did not move. The service is slow. We stopped here three times throughout our recent trip to the Outer Banks. The first two times were like going to any Sonic. The third, and final time (ever) mind you, there was a bit of a rush around lunchtime. I went through the Drive-Thru and noticed other cars were asked to pull into nearby stalls and figured, "Okay, it's going to be a bit..." Some 20-25 mins later, my wife goes in to check on the order at which time the owner (yes, the owner, seeming leader of the franchise) yells, "SHE CAN WAIT JUST LIKE EVERYONE ELSE!" I tell one of his workers (nice kid) to get him outside as I continue to wait on my food. He proceeds to yell at me for calling him to the carpet and demanding an apology for treating my wife the way he did. Like a petulant child, he simply begins to tell me I am no more important than the other people waiting and "he doesn't have time for this..." Really? I have time to pay him money ($30 for my whole family) and am inconvenienced by his business' slowness and he doesn't have time for me?!! This guy has no business running any franchise and should really find out how to humble himself and apologize when he is wrong. I guess all it takes is a Small Business Loan and an empty building to make someone an "owner". Probably the worst Sonic I've ever visited. There was a dried tomato on our menu board. YIKES! Our breakfast looked like it was made last night and reheated for today. The bathrooms were filthy! Upon us leaving we ordered some shakes. Waiter took my card inside instead of letting me pay at my car. I will be checking my account every hour now... Huge no no! I know other breakfast places are around this area are super busy with rental properties changing on Saturday and Sunday's however this is NO excuse for the filthy restrooms and uncleanliness of their parking area. While on vacation, we decided to "grab some lunch", at our favorite fast food place! The sonic in Nags Head is old, unkept and needs help! We pulled in to 3 different parking spaces with menu/call boxes..... all were not working. Several other parking spaces, 6 to be exact, had out of order signs and orange cones, alerting customers that these didn't work! We noticed a couple cars in the drive through, parked for long periods. I was shocked at the lack of upkeep and working stations. We left figuring their food was the same quality as the outside of the facility.... horrible! We all agreed we have never seen a Sonic so dirty and rundown. We went on a Sunday night and "the systems were down" so they couldn't take any orders. Ironically it was an hour before closing. We went again the next night and went up to the ordering machines and they said they were only taking drive thru orders. So, we continued up to the drive thru window and they stated "the kitchen was down for maintenance". Ironically again, it was near closing. It wasn't like 20 minutes until closing, it was 1 hour-1 1/2 hour to closing. When I say there is always an issue, I mean it. We ended up getting our ice cream one time and literally by the time it was handed to us through the drive thru window and a spoon was stuck in it, the ice cream was like liquid. Also, they close at 9pm?? 9pm in the summer months with millions of tourists is early and doesn't make sense. I could go on and on. The WORST Sonic. read more

Okay so i am not one to write negative reviews over insignificant matters, but our experience with this Sonic was embarassing horrible. We pulled into 3 different drive in parking spots, pressing the buttons to order and never had a response at any of them after 5 minutes waiting at each. Thinking the machines might have been broken, we tried the drive through. "We'll be right with you" turned into 15 minutes of getting hangrier and hangrier. Despite the hanger, my need to prove a point won out and we left with no delicious sonic in our hands. 30 minutes later, still hangry. Get your $h!+ together sonic!!!!!!! They werent even busy. WORST CUSTOMER SERVICE: Would NOT recommend this sonic. We drove up at 9 and waited 10 min and no one took our ordered. After waiting 10 min we went up to the drive thru and tried to order. When we pulled up they rudely said they were closed. We were confused because the car in front of us just ordered. I called just to see because I was genuinely confused. Ironically they answered after saying they were closed. The woman who answered the phone was rude and had no customer skills. She said they did a car count at 9:03, but they didn't take our order after being there at 9? They lights were still on and know one said anything to us when we pulled up. Also, google says they close at 10 and they said the close at 9. After I was talking to her on the phone she said, " We did a car count, sorry, good night." And hung up. If I could give this zero stars I would. This was the worst customer service/experience I have ever had at a fast food restaurant ever. For starters I was sitting at the drive-thru window waiting for my food and they had the window open while one of the works yelled "the wings with aids is almost ready" and "the tenders with HIV is up" then two or three other individuals kept repeating those two phrases multiple times and very loudly, laughing and carrying on with no consideration for the customer in the drive-thru when I finally got acknowledged by a employee and they took my money and handed me my food (which was 5 different things) all stacked on top of each other not in a sack and I had to ask for a bag to put my food in.
