I am so grateful to have found Sonic Yoga. It is a haven in the midst of New York City. There there is no judgment or animosity - only acceptance, positivity, and serenity. It is absolutely wonderful. Both studios are spacious, clean, and vibrant, and all of the teachers are so thorough and passionate about what they're teaching, no matter what the style or level of the class. I've been attending Sonic since they opened almost ten years ago and it's better today than when it first started. Like any yoga studio, it's only as good as its teachers, of which there are handful that I'd follow to any other studio: Lori, Joanna, Ari and Amanda are by far my favorites. Each have their own style, but what attracts me to each of them is that they are all inspirational, motivating and offer challenging vinyasa sequences. The studio itself is quite spacious for NYC and unless you go to the evening/ after work classes, they tend not to be overcrowded, which can be a bummer in other studios. Everyone who works there is really friendly and the whole place offers a sense of inclusiveness which can be rare in NYC studios. Also, their rates are comparatively reasonable. read more

I'm a beginner and have been taking yoga here (with no experience prior to this) for about a month and really like this place. The ambiance is particularly wonderful. Everybody is very nice and it's very easy to relax here. The workout is intense and you feel sooo refreshed afterwards! But you never have to over-exert yourself and don't have to do poses that are too intense for you! I highly recommend this place. Price for me at this point is $180 dollars for 4 months (I got the special they were offering at the time after taking the beginner's class). The price will increase substantially at the end of these four months though. read more

I love taking class at Sonic! All of the teachers are great, but I am particularly a fan of Johanna's classes- They strike me as the best elements of Asana and the spiritual elements of Yoga and yet it flows and feels just as good (maybe even better) than dance class. My first visit, I found a "flow one" class to be quite the tush kicker, so I definitely recommend a "Flow Fundamentals" or Beginner's workshop to someone who has never taken yoga before. The vibe at Sonic is loving and caring and I really enjoy it there. I became a regular because its super close to my apartment, but I will continue to go there when/if I no longer live in the neighborhood. read more

Like other reviewers, I also had a Living Social deal for this place. What a nice unexpected surprise! Good teachers, nice atmosphere, and people of all shapes and sizes attend the classes so you don't feel out of place. Also, some other reviewers comment about the large class sizes...I've never had a class where that was a problem. I'd say as long as you get there 15 min early to get a good spot, you should be fine. I would suggest taking a bunch of different teachers when you first start out. Every teacher is different and its good to see who you feel most comfortable with. I've found that some teachers are fast paced, slow paced, casual, serious/very passionate about their practice. It all depends on what works for you. read more

I singed up for 30 days for $30. Dollar a class great deal. First class I took was amazing. When I get old and wrinkled I will be going back in my memory to this class. Teacher was smiling and friendly. It was my first time there and I felt welcomed. There was a guy in the class playing a instrument that sounded like a harp and looked like a large frying pan. While this cool harp like music was playing the teacher led us through vinyasa flow it really felt like I was eagle flowing over the mountains. Great class! Thank you Sonic Yoga. read more

Love, love, love this place! Whether you prefer more of a spiritual approach or a minimal talking/maximum sweating session, this place has teachers that caters to both. The only reason that this place has one star nicked is because it gets super packed after-work hours, so it doesn't matter if you go there on-time, they just keep packing in people, even after class has started, which sometimes means you're practically on top of your neighbors. I realize this is a problem with most studios, but still, it'd be nice to have a cut-off time or number of people. Still, don't let this deter you, especially if you have a flex schedule for daytime classes -- those are never full and are fantastic! read more

Love this place, the classes and instructors! I went there a couple of years ago on a living social deal unlimited for 30 days and it was totally worth it. Its too expensive to join here or do walk ins since I already pay a lot of $$ for my regular gym membership but would totally come back here again with specials like the above. Sonic Yoga is as good as it gets. Co-directors Johanna and Lauren have really mastered the art of allowing you to feel at home. Physically challenging, emotionally insightful, mentally stimulating, and spiritually grounding, Sonic Yoga has become a loving environment for me to smile for no reason, break a hard-core sweat, and break personal barriers for myself. There was a time in my life, after multiple surgeries, when I was unable to walk for a very long time. With the guidance, knowledge, and enthusiasm of the teachers at Sonic Yoga, I can do things with my body I never thought I would be able to do again. Yoga is a powerful tool for physical, mental, and spiritual nourishment, and I wouldn't trust just anyone with that influence in my life. i had a wonderful class here yesterday with kevin as the instructor. this was my first yoga class ever and i felt that he really tailored the class so that even though you were in a room filled with people it felt like you were the only person there. the class went at a good pace. i have only good things to say about the staff at the front desk as well. i'm going to go regularly and hopefully get my friend who lives around the area to come with me, too! read more

I joined Sonic for the 30 days for 30 dollars promo and it is the best deal for the money. As many classes as you could take in 30 days for 30 dollars..... awesome.. Being new to yoga I was hesitant at first but found that the instructors were there to help you not preach to you as I have experienced at another location. Each teacher had a different approach to the class they taught. I was never more comfortable than in the class taught by Sarah Ireland. Her gentle manner and easy way made the class that much more interesting for me. I have an odd work schedule so I was only to happy to see her when my schedule allowed... I would suggest though that if you do join that you buy your own matte even if it is for the 30 days... you can rent them there for 2 dollars but laying on you your own is better! read more

What's frustrating is, you claim the deal, rush to the studio to make it for the class and you're rudely denied. I've been going to many yoga studios in NYC for the past 15 years, and even though I don't live near Sonic Yoga it's my favorite yoga studio because the classes are diverse and the teachers heart-warming, they have a great sense of humor, too (try Jeffrey's class). If I'm feeling a little slow one day I know Flow 1 is the way to go, when I'm feeling like bumping it up a notch I take Flow 2. Every class offers a little bit of this and a little bit of that so there is a spiritual and physical connection. Everyone that works there is friendly and so are the people that take class.They also offer a variety of workhops from ayurveda to spring cleanses-more than just yoga classes they offer complete wellness. read more

I look forward to every class! I started in March in one of the beginners workshop series. If you're new to yoga, Sonic has really great beginner classes that teach the basic foundations of yoga. I am now doing a combination of the Fundamental and Flow 1 classes. Every instructor has a different perspective and focus which keeps it interesting. The classes are often challenging but never intimidating. There is always a nice mix of women and men of various ages and abilities. This is different from some classes I've attended at my gym where I have been the only man in the class. Subscribing to a monthly membership is very affordable, especially if you go two or three times a week. read more

I took the beginner's workshop which launched my yoga "career" here, so the review is for that workshop. Honestly, for $40 and 2 hours, I expected the ability to do the basic poses well or at least an understanding of what it is i was doing wrong. However, there were only 6 of us, so at least there really wasn't much more that could have been improved upon regarding student/instructor ratio. We spent a good bit of time on intros and the whys of yoga which is why we didn't get too much into perfecting poses. Studio was clean/airy (was there on a Sunday afternoon) and location is alright. Prices for packages were reasonable. Nondescript experience pretty much sums it up. read more

I have spent the last 3 years studying and practicing yoga through NYC and around the country. I have been to some really good studios but i have not found one that i feel as at home with as i do at Sonic! It is a place that every time i go in someone knows me by name and asks how i am. I am not only a student there but a member of the family. This studio also does an amazing job at balancing the physical aspects of yoga with the spiritual side of yoga too. Many studios seem to focus on one or the other but Sonic really gives you a workout with both! The teachers are warm and welcoming and always willing to help! Anywhere from beginners to pros - sonic makes you feel welcomed! I love it so much that i am even got my Teacher Training Certification from them! I love this place!! I went to yoga tonight and I have to say one of my favorite ways to end class is the fact that they rub oil on your temple to make you relax even more! I'm not usually one to be so excited to write a review, but I LOVED my first class so much I could not wait to jump on Yelp and give this place 5 stars. I took a Flow 1 class with Sarah, and it was absolutely what I needed. I have been on an unhealthy binge for over a week and needed to realign my energy. I'm usually not fond of Flow Yoga because it does everything BUT flow and I leave feeling more discombobulated. However, this class was so in sync and organized that I really felt connected with my body. Each pose was perfectly timed, there was a lot of one-on-one attention and Sarah even took the time to explain energies. Overall, I adore this place and cannot wait to return! read more

I got a groupon for an unlimited one month. I was pleasantly surprised. I am now in love with this place. I'm not the type to like intense exercise, but have discovered flow yoga is the perfect balance of a work out (you will break a sweat) and relaxation. It's more about the poses and less heavy on the chanting/meditating which I like. The space is nice, location is easy to get to, and the teachers are wonderful. The instructors are very helpful and nice. I have really improved within the month and I am definitely going to pay to continue! Just a really great place! read more
