Started out really liking this place, but the past few experiences have been below average. I come to NYC on a monthly basis for work, and found this place via yelp when I was staying in midtown a couple years ago. My first experience was great - hot and challenging, vigorous, enthusiastic instructor: exactly what I look for in a good yoga class. The past 2 classes I attended, however, were very disappointing. I went a few months ago on a Tuesday evening, 6:30pm class I think. While the instructor was good (female), the class was so overcrowded that you couldn't bend over or lift your arms without hitting someone. This completely ruined the class for me, didn't feel like I got a full practice in. They need to cap their classes/have restricted sign-up to eliminate this. At some point quality should outweight quantity. The last class I took, a few weeks ago on Weds night - 7:30pm, I think - it wasn't challenging at all. It wasn't overly crowded, and instructor was a nice guy, but it seemed like it was for beginners and therefore was a waste of time. The class was classified as level 2/3 so I was prepared for an extremely tough class. But, because there were beginners in the room, he taught to them instead of staying true to what I'd signed up for. It was a completely waste of $18 and wish I'd gone elsewhere. To top it off, they were out of towels... what yoga studio runs out of towels?! I will likely not go here anymore when back in NYC. read more

I live about 50 feet away and walk past Sonic EVERYDAY. I finally caved and signed up for their $99 - two month unlimited and quickly found myself there every morning. I was only used to Bikram before so the vinyasa flow was new to me. I was hooked after one class. I like how they have so many instructors who all have their own unique form of teaching and not one class is the same. So far I love every instructor. My favorite class of the week is Center Yoga with Tania. It is seriously so relaxing and meditative i've even had out of body experiences. I only started coming to Sonic a couple months ago, but I'm in LOVE - it's an adorable studio, the space is so welcoming (feels like someone's cozy living room) as are the people. One reviewer mentioned that her first time there it felt like everyone else knew each other-- i can see how that would be intimidating at first, but it's a great aspect of Sonic & as soon as you come a few times you will befriend people in your classes as well! Everyone is open & friendly. The teachers are amazing - they are attentive, their classes are interesting & always offer something to learn (whether it's a new tip for a familiar pose, a completely new pose you've never tried, or a concept to take with you when you leave the class), and have a wonderful spiritual component - not shoved down your throat, but something light and very positive. I'm doing the teacher training at Sonic now, and it's been such an amazing experience, I highly recommend doing it if you were thinking about it!! Be aware that the course is a big time commitment because it's very thorough- we're learning about every aspect of yoga, from meditation to what you're looking for in every pose & proper adjustments to how to sequence a class, and so so much more - no stone left unturned! I've already learned so much & can't wait to spread the love to my future yogi students :) I'm so happy to be a part of Sonic's teacher training and have been exposed to such incredible teachers including Lauren, Johanna, Jeffrey, & Tracy. I took a couple months off and during Memorial weekend thought i would come back to get a good class in. I noticed that they missed the Spring Cleaning session. The stairs leading up tot he studio is black, dusty, filled with hair balls and you can tell no on has ever put a broom or mop to it. I found it offensive because they ask us to take our shoes off when you get in, but then i realized that the floors once inside the studio was also scummy/ black and dust/hair allover the carpet. so much for trying to have clean feet to put on your mat. i noticed that the day bed - which i thought was so cute in the begining STILL has the same odd brown smudge on it. the same spot on the right...very suspect - so the yogis avoid sitting there, I too. during my Aligh 1 class yesterday - i really really enjoyed the instructor and found her to be extremely knowledgeable. then as i was doing a forward bend i noticed a huge hairballs floating around my mat. gross. guys - get your staff that sit on the computers on Facebook to pick up a broom/ windex, mop . makes mewonder if they ever mop the main studio where we all sweat and take DEEEEEP breaths during class. i took my matt which i usually keep in storage - home with me after being there for 5 months. time to look for another studio? i'll be back if i can't find anything. read more

I did my 200 hour teacher training at Sonic Yoga. It is the cheapest one offered in the city (trust me, I did my research) and most flexible with my schedule (every other weekend from 9-5 and a 2 1/2 hour class on Thursday nights). All of the teachers are phenomenal and bring their own individual teachings to make it great TT experience. Note: Sonic Yoga is more spiritual/esoteric than most places I've practiced. For me, I'm indifferent - but it's something to consider. SY offers changing rooms, showers and restrooms. Some classes do get crowded so get there early to find a decent spot! $2 to rent a mat or you can keep your mat at the studio as long as you mat a mat bag. If they offered more classes in more intervals I'd attend this SYoga more. read more

Like many others here, my introduction to Sonic Yoga was through the LivingSocial deal. I took several yoga classes previously, mostly in gyms like Crunch or Health & Racquet and while pleasant, I didn't really enjoy the experience. I was quite literally just going through the motions. Sonic Yoga's Flow Fundamentals class taught me just how little I actually knew about yoga, and showed me just how challenging but still soothing and energizing a proper yoga practice could be. The teachers are all very friendly and helpful, and each have their own very individual style of instructing and a varying curriculum, including poses of the month, so you never feel like you're taking the same old class over and over. I also feel like they impart just the right amount of spiritual guidance (I never feel overwhelmed by any philosophy lessons here). They have a wide roster of classes for absolute beginners to advanced practitioners, and an informative website, as well as a very useful web interface that allows you to check the schedule and register for classes online. All in all, great studio. It really gave me a new appreciation for yoga and I plan to keep practicing here for a long time. read more

I really like this studio. The only thing I find a bit weird is they are on the 3rd floor (I know right? How can I be lazy when I am going to yoga to work out!? :P), but I really hate climbing those steep stairs. I'm taking off ONE star not because of their stairs, but because I agree that their classes can get really cray-cray. I hate how crammed they are, and they should just cap those classes, or at least make people organize their mats properly so that we have enough space to perform the moves. You will run across instructors that are tougher, and some that are gentler. I'm a wimp, so I like the ones that baby me, but still give me a work out. I will mention that one female instructor there seems to be kind of self-righteous. She totally chewed out this one girl (even though she WAS wrong for walking into a class during meditation), and I found that uncomfortable to witness. I feel like she should have just made a comment and let it go, instead of waxing on it for a good minute. read more

Here's the thing. I looked for a place to practice for a while and would always end up coming home to my Rodney Yee DVDs (which are AMAZEballs ... it works for me, anyhow). I don't mind the idea of people finding spiritual fulfillment anywhere, be it dance, martial arts, meditation, yoga ... but some places can make you feel pressured to feel something you may not necessarily feel. Sonic Yoga gears the practice towards all their students. The mantra (as it were) is 'this is the pose ... and if it's in your practice, you can move from the first pose into this more difficult pose ... and if THIS is in your practice, you can move into this next to impossible pose! (actually said by one of the funniest and most inspiring teachers there ... a hard thing to declare, since all of them have a lovely sense of humor and understanding about yoga and the different ways it helps people). They're actually able to accomodate different experience levels well. When I was a beginner there, I was challenged, but not intimidated. I got personal attention even when there was the minimum amount of space between students and mats (my guess is forty students). Best of all, I'm injury free for a year now ... I'm a martial artist, and this has kept my iliotibial band irritation and stressed hip adductor and tendons all but unnoticeable. And, yes, this agnostic gets a bit of a spiritual experience in the beginning and ending 'ohms.' It's never forced on us, and it's made very clear that it 'is to be whatever it is for us, however we experience it - that is what's valid." I love that. Hooray for straight-up yoga. I really really like the classes at this place. I must admit, I do have a special place in my heart for Lisa, she is an awesome instructor. She radiates energy and positivity and the music that she plays during the class exhumes the same vibes. I feel simulated, just the right amount of challenged, and happy. Rachel works along side her during the class; the pair is attentive and, in a positive way, adjusts everyone's poses. They typically instruct classes that are right after work at least twice a week. So you get double the attention and double the happy. I have taken classes with a few other instructors. Rian is great, he has a calming voice and pairs ohm chants with his harmonica. The kundalini yoga class is also an interesting experience. Vinyasa is not the only type of yoga out there! My first experience here, however, wasn't too pleasant, I felt like the instructor was a bit critical, and that is not the aim of yoga. The person who worked the front desk the day I started also didn't explain how anything worked. But I'm glad that didn't prevent me from going again. To give you an idea of how things work if you are a newbie to this facility, you should take off your shoes before you enter and leave them by the front door. You need to fill out an electronic form when you get there to register as a member. Then you get a ticket that you bring with you to class and leave by your yoga mat until the end of class, at which point the instructor takes it or you hand it to them. They have changing rooms, a few bathrooms, cubbies. Classes may be on that floor, or the floor above. You should aim to get there 5 to 10 min before class starts. There is a water cooler, yogi tea, and accessories for sale, towels and mats to rent. I know mats are $2 to rent. They also have coconut water and a tumeric drink for sale. They sell sports bras in different colors that fit very very comfortably, I recommend you get one. Yelp currently has the 30 days for $30 promotion and I urge you to try it. I am a big YTTP fan, that also may be influenced by donation, which helps the wallet, but this place really helps you learn, foster, and improve your technique. Since the crowd is smaller, the attention you receive is more personal. I myself got a month's taste of this place because my boyfriend bought me a livingsocial deal. I would commit to a membership, but for me, the location is inconvenient. I work on the east side and walking across midtown is a nightmare. Since Hell's Kitchen is a busy place, if the windows are open during class, it's a bit annoying to hear the honking of traffic when you are trying to attain peace, but being a NYer, I didn't notice that until my 9th time. If you work on the west side, or live nearby, I urge you to try this place. read more

I signed up for the 2 months unlimited for $99, for how expensive a single class is here - it's definitely worth the money. I had 4 different instructors and only 1 i didn't gel with. My biggest complaint, and why i'm not continuing on as a member is the timing of the classes. there is a gap on most weekdays (except 1) from 3-6pm of no new class that day. It just doesn't fit my schedule. Also, every class seems to run late which makes your class start late etc etc etc For someone who is anally punctual, this was very hard for me and most the time i'd have to leave a class early to make time for the other parts of my day. If you're not to a set schedule and their times work for you -- i definitely recommend. read more

Really like this place... the facility is awesome and the people so kind and nice. I like yoga because of the physical work out it gives you, and the stamina you need to stay in certain poses. So i enjoy the standard flow 1-2 classes. I am not a fan of some of the spirtual stuff... cause i am very firm in my spiritual beliefs (work it, jesus!) and am not a fan of worshiping dead people and false idols. BUT--- with that removed, and not participating in the chanting... it's a great work out... some teachers here are better than others... but it depends on your style and what you want... there's a perfect teacher here for everyone i am sure. They also have great deals in the fall for unlimited yoga till the end of the year for new clients... that's what i did... and it was SUPER awesome. read more

I've been trying to find a yoga studio where the teachers don't talk too much. Seriously! I really don't want to chant forever, though I'm ok with some "Oms" at the beginning or end. A little fire breath is alright on occasion. But really, I go to flow. That's what happens at Sonic. I have a bad back and I need to strengthen my core says every Dr. in the book. Until now, I couldn't do a forward bend. With the help of a few advil 30min before, I'm on my way to the body I used to have. Even Flow Fundamentals at Sonic is a great workout, and they have deals all the time (though you can only have one special in your lifetime it seems...) I got lucky with 3 months for $180. Unlimited. All I'm saying is if you want kind teachers, knowledgeable teachers, who give you a breathing cue at the right time and actually make you sweat, who come around the room and do small adustments with oftimes a helper in the room, this really is the place to go. read more

My fiance and I were looking for yoga studio in our neighborhood that was reasonable and offered different levels of classes. Lo and behold, a groupon came up for this place! My mom and aunt had been here several times while staying in our apartment so figured we'd take the plunge and try it out. I've done yoga a lot over the years and we wanted a place that him as a beginner and me as a more experienced yogi could go to together. We found our studio!! The classes are great. I was used to Yoga to the People so the crowded-ness doesn't bother me at all. The studio itself is very clean, warm and cozy. The teachers are all different and impart a different style for their classes. I have yet to be disappointed and will be continuing to go after my groupon expires (this week, eek!) read more

After finding Sonic Yoga back in 2012 I haven't looked back since. The two floor studio includes a small boutique, a lounge area, and two studios for classes. Each teacher brings their own energy and individuality to each class, making the search for the right teacher and the development of your own personal style that much greater. The energy in the studio is familiar, as if this little place was your hometown. The community that gathers here is always willing to give advice and help, even if it's your first encounter. I've practiced in other studios around the city but haven't found a place like this yet and I don't think I ever will. read more

A total newbie, I started off with Sonic's 2-hour Beginner Workshop on a Sunday and have been hooked ever since! I was so worried that I'd be in over my head, but the Beginner Workshop -- and then the excellent 6-week Beginner Workshop that followed -- were fantastic. Just challenging enough to make me feel accomplished, but I never felt like I couldn't do it... or at least try. :) The instructors (Keith, then Krissy) are really great -- very knowledgeable and articulate and kind. I've moved on to Flow Fundamentals classes, and find that the Beginner classes I had were perfect preparation. I truly look forward to continuing my "budding" practice at Sonic, and would highly recommend the studio! read more

I really liked this place until I was sexually assaulted by one of the instructors. Classes were pretty good. I especially liked the 45 min power yoga - worked up a good sweat in a short time. Accidentally took a beginners class once, and that was VERY beginner. But yea, I was taking one of Chris Temple's classes, my second class with him, and he decided to assist me with a standing twist. I have no problem with hands on instructions usually, but the way chris assisted me involved running his hands across my chest and whispering in my ear "you can get me back later" (after making other comments about liking my tattoos and sh*t). Needless to say, I will not be back. I contemplated alerting the company directly, but I'm pretty sure he's one of the owners. FYI if you're reading this chris, someone coming to your class twice is NOT a sign that they're into you and want you to make moves. read more

I am new to yoga, and this studio is welcoming me into it with open arms. I took Lori's Flow 1 class and it was challenging enough that I was sweating my face off, but not so crazy that I was frustrated. The ambiance was perfect, and it was spiritual without being exclusive. They offer a work study program, student discounts and have some very reasonable packages. You can bring your own mat, or rent one, and they provide blocks and blankets. They also offer a teacher training program. read more

I really love this studio. I've been practicing here for about four months. All of the teachers have a similar vibe, and use chanting and sometimes share inspirational teachings during class. Lauren and Lori are absolutely my favorite teachers. Every time I go to their classes, I feel that the practice speaks directly to my life. I bought a deal through Living Social and so far I've only been to 3 classes. I've enjoyed the classes themselves so far but not the customer service. I started my deal on a Monday which activated my 30 day trial. Then I ended up getting really sick (plus NYC was plummeted with another snow storm) so I missed the rest of my 1st week. I called several times and after finally reaching a manger was told "no" when I ask if I could reboot the start date of my Living Social deal so a whole week of my month long trial was wasted. That was very disappointing. While I understand that me getting sick isn't their fault it wouldn't have hurt them to accommodate me so I just felt like it was pretty bad customer service. Also, I finally found the one shower they have there only the water never heats up and there was a giant roach in the shower! Eeek! I'll update my review once my trial is complete but like I said, so far the classes themselves have been good. read more

I recently moved back to the city and tried a lot of Yoga studios before finally settling on Sonic Yoga. Not the fanciest studio out there but it has a great vibe, great teachers and is very welcoming - exactly what I think a great yoga studio should be. I particularly love all the classes by the "J" teachers: Jeffrey, Johanna and Juan - they don't have you do stuff that is too crazy but you will definitely break a sweat. The clientele is also great - I never feel intimated or out of place in the class - everyone is pretty friendly and respectful. read more

Sonic Yoga is one of the best studios in NYC. I did their yoga teacher training in July, and fell in love with each teacher, the studio and every student. Everyone has such incredibly open and warm hearts, and I felt that I was a part of a community. They are dedicated to teaching yoga safely but with plenty of challenges and opportunities to grow in your practice. They are doing it right, and you can't say that about many studios. Each teacher has years of experience and are still attending teacher trainings to grow as teachers. They aren't just about teaching you how to fly into a handstand, but they will teach WHY you should want to handstand and how to safely do so. Sonic has a lot of respect to the ancient texts and practice of yoga that seems to be so disregarded by other studios. read more

I went once because I had a Groupon so I can only speak from that experience. I do yoga at home and used to go regularly for about 6 months. Sonic is a small, local yoga studio. If you live nearby, it's definitely worth checking out. I found the class to basically be what you put into it. There were some people in the class who pushed themselves. I didn't feel pressure to perform. It was somewhat crowded, but probably depends on when you go. I wish them luck because the more studios the better. read more

A two story yoga studio in the middle of NY? Very cool. Went to Sara's 7 am class, she was a little late due to train traffic, but got us started right away. She had great energy and had a good flow to the class. Love the chanting at the end of class. I don't see it as a way of worship, as others may, but I love the sound and the sincerity. read more

Groupon had a special on Sonic Yoga so I gave it a try. Pretty awesome, I love the nagchampa incense they burn occasionally during the yoga work outs. Really loved Sonic Yoga... I came for a month with an unlimited pass I bought online. Throughout the month I came mostly to Level 2 classes after work. The level 2 classes were physically challenging without losing the meditative aspect of the practice. I broke a sweat without feeling like I was working out, which is one of the things I look for in my practice. For reference, I've been practicing for 7+ years and I work slow and steadily at inversions (currently working on being able to hold my forearm balance). For me, the pace and poses of the level 2 classes were challenging, in a really pleasing way. I did come to a couple of Level 1s and a meditation session- these were great as well. The studio itself is clean and the instructors are warm and welcoming. They give just enough individual attention in class. I'd recommend this place to just about anyone interested in yoga. Love this studio. Pretty spacious, clean and airy. Amazing classes. Great teachers, who make the experience both physical and spiritual. Not only you come out feeling great about accomplishing something but also refreshed and ready to conquer the world. Plz note: the locker rooms are unisex with separate changing areas!!! Unless, of course, you go to the studio to meet ppl and/or desperately need to show off your body to the opposite sex, pretend like you didn't notice... After getting a Living Social deal for Sonic Yoga, I was excited to join it. I have been to many yoga studios in and around the city but Sonic Yoga has by far exceeded my expectations. I really like that they have classes for people at different levels. That way, if you are anything like me, at intermediate level, the Flow 1/2 class is perfect for you. The teachers here are great. I always feel like I can push my limits when I go here and reach farther levels. I love the meditation, chanting and the practice all together. The classes are perfect sized so it doesnt get too crowded. Some teachers bring helpers who help adjust the poses. They only have one shower, so it can get crowded. Highly recommend this place. I am so glad that I have finally found a yoga studio that perfectly fits what I was looking for. read more

I love the flow/vinyassa style and the instructors are very warm and encouraging. I would say I am at an intermediate level (I've been taking yoga for a few years, but have yet to master arm balances, etc.) and I find the Flow 1-2 class to be a good fit for me. read more

I loved Sonic from the moment I walked in the door. Sonic's teachers are inspiring, knowledgeable, super fun and gracious. The overall vibe at Sonic is relaxed and super friendly. A great mix of the spirituality of yoga, without being super rigid, and fun. Going to class here is like playtime for grown ups! Be sure to catch a reggae yoga class too! Studio smaller than the norm, so it got crowded very fast. Convenient if you live in Hell's Kitchen or Theater District. They provide props. Had a session where the instructor played Michael Jackson songs. What the hell? Try relaxing and meditating to Billy Jean... Classes don't have consistent flow. I'm a decades long yoga practitioner. I took classes at the UWS YogaWorks for five years before switching last month to Sonic Yoga, which I have come to realize is a refreshing antidote to the hectic bustle of YogaWorks. I chose the 2 months @ $108 deal to get a sense of the place before committing to a longer term membership. Small details I would've liked to have known up front: The place is a walkup; two flight of stairs. There's a single stall bathroom, which often has a wait. There's no locker area or changing area so come dressed in your attire. Bring any valuables into class and store near the props. If you need hydration bring a filled water bottle. If you choose to refill at the water fountain, you're encouraged to make a donation. Other beverage option is purchasing a small coconut water. There's no garbage can (unless you can gain access to the bathroom). I joined Sonic in person after my first class. I wasn't told any information about the facility from the front desk woman. (Had to find out on Yelp that there's another level with showers.) As other yogis checked-in for class, I followed their example and searched for my name on the front desk iPad, which appears once you preregister. The online pre-registeration cements my commitment, which for me helps with followthrough on attendance. Sonic has two studios, but my dozen or so classes were all held the same west facing studio. Morning and lunchtime classes are almost always to capacity. Mats are placed about 4-6 inches apart and positioned according to tape marks on the hardwood to maximize space. This does limit range of motion, especially if you like circling your arms during sun salutations. The classes, from my experience thus far, are primarily vinyasa flow and geared toward seasoned yogis. There's less explicit modification instructions, but the teachers circulate around the room to make adjustments for alignment. So far I've taken classes with Lisa (whom I believe is now finished teaching here), Elizabeth, Sarah, and Jeffrey--all top rate, knowledgeable instructors. Props are available but no instructor has yet to gear the class toward the use of them. You're expected to know how to utilize props to modify poses. read more

The teacher didn't help at all I didn't know that men and women shared a changing room...nobody told me...so I changed openly...well I was lucky that the man came in after I was dressed again. Small and very welcoming studio. Sarah Ireland is an awesome teacher! Provides good instructions, well choreographed flows of poses. Provides helpful guidance and adjustments to participants. She also too the time to review the finer points of a specific pose when she saw varying levels of adherence to proper form. She cares and does not want the participants to develop or persist in poor form, which not only can lead to injuries, but also miss out on the centuries of consistency in the poses. Mat and towel rentals, changing rooms, and the like are available. It is not a high gloss place, but a serious yoga studio. Props (blocks, blankets, straps) are in good condition (not worn out as you often find). If they do not have the sign outside, you could miss the door to studio - stairs up a few flights to the check in desk. read more

I love Sonic Yoga! I had tried several other studios, but felt that I hadn't found the perfect one until I bought a Groupon for Sonic and fell in love. The space is clean, the other students are friendly, and the instructors are so awesome. Lori is amazing... her classes are challenging and definitely make me sweat, but she is helpful, warm, and inspiring. Even though I'm probably not quite at a level 2, I try to go to those classes to challenge myself; however, I don't feel silly if I can't do some of the poses. During the week, I can only attend the after-work classes, and I admit, those do get pretty crowded. However, the teachers are always willing to help you squeeze in, and don't make you feel bad if you're late. Plus, I just bought 3 months unlimited for $180! There is no other yoga studio quite like Sonic. I started coming 5 years ago and it has been my home away from home ever since. The instructors are both insightful and encouraging. I feel elevated and inspired when I am there. It is a lovely community of people who have become my good friends. From the flow fundamental classes that help with alignment, to the level two classes which push you to your limits, this studio offers a variety of types of vinyasa classes that will help you expand your practice. They also offer mediation and donation classes. The new space is clean and aesthetically beautiful. I have tried many other studios but have not felt the sense of unique, non judgmental acceptance anywhere else. The teachers tend to be knowledgeable, and quite vocal/long-winded (in a good way, at least for me), i.e. they tend to go into detail about the spiritual ("Energy moves in so-and-so way, and is concentrated in x and y"), meditative, and Ayurvedic aspects of the yoga. 3). Less respectful receptionist I have encountered. Literally the worst. I had food poisoning so I called in to let them know that I couldn't go. I asked if they could just check me in so I wouldn't get charged for no show. (Paying extra on your sick day is not fun) The receptionist played hardball on me and wouldn't accommodate. She gave me a whole lesson on why I should pay cancellation fee so someone on a waiting list can take the class (aka making more money out of it). She told me thats how they run a business. I wonder how long it will take them to be out of business. Not long because they DON'T even care about their customers. When your eyes are all on the profit, you can only go so far. read more
