From our room at the Best Western Plus, we were checking our phone maps for a place to eat on a cold dreary afternoon. Sonny's popped up, and being fans of Sonny's when we lived in Florida decades ago, it was a no-brainer where we were headed. Easy to find and plenty of parking. We ran through the raindrops into an inviting dining room with just a few other patrons. We were promptly seated to a booth and began going through the menu. I went with a sliced pork option, and I wasn't disappointed (Sorry, can't recall what the wife ordered). The meat was moist and tender as I remembered it. I added some sweet BBQ sauce and that kicked things up a notch. Service was great throughout, and our glasses never ran empty. Sonny's remains on my favorites list. read more

I lived in South Florida in the late 80s for six years. My now X absolutely love the Sonny's barbecue there. It is the same chain. Hence, when it was his turn to choose a restaurant, guess where we went most of the time? Their food was good, but I was never a big fan. Fast-forward three decades and our Bob Evans sadly closed its doors. However, the Sonny's Barbecue franchise moved in. They've actually been there probably a year and we had never tried it. Last night, we decided to give it a try. It really was fabulous although they brought me fries instead of the potato I ordered, our precious server fix that immediately. I think they did send me beans with my special that weren't supposed to come with it, but Even I liked those even though I'm not big on barbecued beans. The irony was my guy is trying to downsize himself a bit and he ordered a $10 special. That was a sandwich and one side. So he got a pulled pork sandwich and coleslaw. Both were very very good. I had to take pictures because it seemed like I ended up with a ton of food, which I did, and I enjoyed an entire meal again today. The price of mine was only $12 plus the small up charge for choosing a salad as a side. The iced tea was so good that I had to get it to go cup because I was not leaving any of it there. Recommendations to our efficient and friendly server, whose name was Rae. Although my significant other does not use apps, I went ahead and downloaded the app to my phone and added my card and received a $5 discount off our tab. My partner had ice water with lemon, I got this massive amount of food, he got a very nice portion meal, and service was very nice. It is hard to believe that we got all this for less than $24 before the coupon after the coupon, it was not even $19. let's not forget. I brought some food home for today. I must add if you go in to dine there based on my photos, please remember that the fries and the beans in the photos did not come with the special that I got. The point is they fixed the error with the potato immediately. I highly recommend Sonny's BBQ in Bowling Green, KY. The ambiance is OK -- after all, they were working with the floor plan that was left by the former Bob Evans. It could perhaps be cozier, but they do have a full bar. The taste is very good and I haven't ran into anything that we haven't enjoyed. We have not personally eaten inside just because we have 3 kids and it can sometimes be a real challenge lol. However the family feast platter is usually our go to dish. You get 3 meats, 3 sides, and corn muffins, with drinks for about $55. There is always enough to take home and eat later. Why are all these Yelp reviews hating on Sonny's? It's the unofficial BBQ of Florida with a few locations in Kentucky. I am from as close as you can get to Florida and I'm always pleased with Sonny's. First of all, the sweet tea is always sweet and refreshing. Second, I love the Sonny's Sampler that comes with ribs, chicken, pulled pork, and brisket. It also comes with slaw, beans, and garlic bread or cornbread. It is about $17. I would say the most consistent meats from Sonny's are the ribs and pulled pork. Also ask for the mustard BBQ sauce to put on the pulled pork. Thank me later. The beans and slaw, in my opinion are the two best sides from Sonny's. The beans are sweet and smoky and the slaw has a good mix of crunch and creamy slaw sauce. There are 4 sauces on the table and the mustard sauce that you have to ask for. The 4 sauces on the table are original, sweet, sizzlin (spicy sweet), and smokin! I am so happy to find a Sonny's barbecue this far up! I have loved Sonny's since I was a University of Florida student. It's a typical corporate store. The food is consistent, and while it's not exactly the same as when Sonny Tillman ran it, it's not far off. My biggest beef is the coleslaw. It's just not the same flavorful coleslaw that I remember. But all else was on par with my expectations. This particular restaurant location is very neat and clean. They have nice staff that showed a lot of sensitivity and regard for my grandchildren. The vibe is definitely bbq with a flair of the wood that makes the goodness, such a cool atmosphere. Today I got pulled pork, beans, fried okra, and cornbread. I just wanted a piece of grilled chicken because I'm on WW. The great waiter, Asher, rang my chicken up as an add-on to save us money since I didn't want the bun or any sides. I have been waiting for Sonny's to open for a while now and tonight my son and I finally got to try it. First off, the remodeling of the old Bob Evan's looks great and definitely has a BBQ restaurant feel to it. The greeters were super nice and had us seated in about 5 minutes despite telling us there would be a 20 minute wait. Our server was at our table very fast and was very happy and pleasant. She took our drink orders and when she brought them out they were in very large (almost comically so) glasses. She then took our order and at that point I had thought I would name her in the review to give her some kudos, but then things changed and I decided not to. My son ordered the Whole Hog sandwich on garlic toast with BBQ beans and I ordered the Sonny's Sampler with mac and cheese, a baked sweet potato and corn bread. She went to put our order in and came back out to ask if I wanted my 1/4 chicken white or dark, to which I responded dark. After a few minutes another lady brought our food out and it looked AMAZING. Whoever plated this needs a job in food advertising. Then I noticed I had white meat instead of dark, but didn't think much of it and decided to try it anyway. My son really enjoyed the Whole Hog but I didn't try it so I won't say too much about it, so let's get to the sampler: Brisket: It was good for Bowling Green, possibly one of the better briskets in the area, but not great by any stretch. It was only flat, no point and was cut a little thick for a slice of flat. It had a great smoke ring but not much bark and wasn't as moist as some. Baby Back Ribs: These were very good, probably the best option on the sampler. They do leave the membrane on the ribs, which I prefer but I understand most wouldn't want it. They had a bit of a bite and were not fall-off-the-bone but once again, that's how I like them. Smoked Chicken: It was okay. That's about it. Pulled Pork: Pulled pork was good but pretty standard compared to other options around town. Mac and Cheese: It was good, probably the best part of the meal. Not oven baked so it didn't have a crust but was still very good. Baked Sweet Potato: It was baked just right and they provided butter and brown sugar. Sauces: They have 4 sauces on the table: Original, Hot, Smokey, and Sweet. They all seemed to have the original as a base with something added (hot sauce, liquid smoke and maybe honey) to make them different. The amount of each additive was so small I couldn't tell much a difference so I don't really have an opinion on which is best. It's a good sauce, no complaints but not mind blowing good. The food itself gets 4 stars. My son put it best: "It was pretty good for a restaurant." Better than average but not amazing. Now lets circle back around to the server. She started out amazing but fell off very fast. As previously stated, she entered the wrong chicken, which is easily forgivable but didn't stop to really check on us, other than a quick "Ya'll okay" mid-stride as she walked by. The next time she properly stopped by our table was to ask if we were ready for our check (while having it in her hand)which was weird because I still had at least half my food still on my plate. My response was something along the lines of "no hurry" and I asked for more tea which I had been out of for a few minutes. She sat the check down and walked away only stopping by again when I put my card down after I was finished. If you're following along, that means it was half my meal without being checked on and without the refill I had asked for. So what was she doing in the mean-time? Standing at the next table down being super flirty and cutesy, which I understand, it helps the tip, but what was annoying is she asked if they wanted multiple refills in the time I didn't get the one I had to ask for, plus she offered dessert, which she never offered to her other table who might have liked a dessert and who definitely wanted a refill for the ridiculous amount of meat he was consuming. I always tip VERY well, even when there are a few mess-ups and hate when I have to tip poorly but just flat being ignored and being rushed while the table got all the service is just simply not worth a good tip. She cost herself some money and cost the restaurant my business for the foreseeable future. I'm going to give the restaurant 3 stars, mainly being brought down by the service. I'll re-evaluate after a visit at some point down the road. read more

Let me start out by saying that I have always had favorable experiences at Sonny's BBQ for the last 20 years or so. This specific Sonny's was the worst Sonny's BBQ I have ever been to. Management is non existent and the worst employees run this place. As I ate, there were no less that 8 uncleared tables around. There was zero urgency to get this cleared as most of the waitresses clearly though such clean up was not urgent. Service here was laughable and embarrassing. The one or two hard working servers were definitely in the minority as the ones in my area took to sitting around socializing. One large table was occupied by a server's kids (3-4) and mom (?). The servers sat around joking and complaining and saying things like "you're fired" then the unchecked kids kept repeating this over and over. There is so much indifference to the customer here it is mind blowing. Who owns this franchise? They need to blow up the workforce here. The smoked half chicken was really good. The baked potato came out barely warm at best. I actually ordered a baked sweet potato but was informed a couple of minutes after ordering that they were out of sweet potatoes. How does this happen on a Friday night at 6:30 pm. Nobody here seems to care at all about the customers or the dining experience. I sat with a clearly almost empty glass of tea for quite a while and the server never checked back until seeing if I wanted the check. There were two waitresses who were really trying to do their best but the lazy waitresses ruled the roost. The one hanging out the most had the nerve of audibly complaining how tired she was as she sat with her kids' table. Really??? Even people from the kitchen came out and socialized at the bar area while the drive through line is wrapped around the building. Went today as a treat for my oldest who's been really wanting Sonny's ribs. We are from Miami & the one there is always good. Everything was so bad. The ribs were hard as shh. Like really bad. The mac was beyond mushy. The beans tasted like they were straight out of a can. The coleslaw just tasted like something cold. No flavor. Cornbread was yuck super hard & dry. Called the waiter over cause my son's drink, the cup had lipstick on it. She said she was coming. Then someone stopped her on the way, she immediately ignored us to attend them, didn't even so much as say, one moment, or I'll be right back. She then after attending them, went into the kitchen. Didn't come back to our table. We spent some good change in there for it to have been so bad, from the food to the service. So last Friday, my wife and I tried Sonny's barbecue and I had a really high expectations from the pictures that I have seen. I even communicated with them on their Instagram and let them know that the barbecue in this area is just really nothing special and lackluster. Hard to tell anyone that has been enjoying the local barbecue for years or even decades. how do you know that something is better if you have never had better? You know? ‍ They told me that I should try the barbecue bowl which they have in several varieties but they have a brisket grilled cheese on freaking garlic bread that I really wanted to try and it was top notch. My wife got the pulled chicken sandwich and we also tried the pork eggrolls and the fried pickles. Those along with the housemaid ranch and the zesty sauce for the eggrolls? Don't even bother bringing up any other barbecue. If you want to waste my time then make sure I'm on the clock getting paid to hear whoever you're suggesting. Really pleased with the experience I mean all we did was go through the drive-through which was really convenient because they were very busy being that they are newly opened and it's good quality food. It was nice to just roll through drive-through and be on our way. Spent nearly $40 but when it comes to quality food, I never mind spending good money. I got a problem when I'm spending good money on mediocre food that I could've made a lot better at home. I cook well but I also enjoy eating out so we are always on the lookout for good restaurants. Our family has visited Sonny's 3 times for dinner and once for lunch since opening, and every time it's been hit or miss. Prices are great (you can add side and drink for $3). Service has been friendly, but on the slow side - I'll give them a pass for a while though since it's new. The kids meals have been consistently great. Our kids have loved their meals each time, and I've found myself finishing off my daughters grilled cheese a time or two. The brisket sandwich...hit the first time. But a total miss the next few times. I asked for the chopped brisket sandwich, and their way of "chopping" looks more cubed. The pork sandwich has been great sometimes, too dry other times. We will come back if course. It is a new restaurant and needs time to find its groove. read more
