We were so happy to find this spot while in the area for work. The outside is pretty unassuming but the interior is really fun. They have a large open area and fund decor. The place is spotless. The food was all well portioned and great tasting. They have all you can eat catfish night and I want to make the run back down! We were in town for a baseball tournament and used yelp to locate a restaurant. We read there views and settled on Sonny's for supper. The waitress recommended the chicken fried steak so I tried it. Let's just say I've eaten chicken fries all over the U.S. but this meal was amazing it's homemade not frozen. Found this place on Yelp! It was a cute place, decorated with a western cowboy/cowgirl motif. Clean. We were looking for a good breakfast and we found it! Wait staff was attentive but not overly personable. She did her job. Husband had the eggs with bacon, hash browns, biscuits with gravy! Gravy was bland. I came in for a simple burger and onion rings. When asked what I want on the burger, I said "Mayo, fried onions (extra charge) and mushrooms (extra charge). What came out was a burger with mushrooms that were floppy canned mushrooms (the cashier swears they are not canned but they certainly were not fresh), sauteed onions, mayo, tomato, lettuce, and pickle. I said "this is not what I ordered. I wanted fried onions and none of this other stuff". She explained to me that that is fried onions, fried on the griddle. I said fried onions are fried, not sauteed on a griddle. I tried to eat it but it was so gross, I just could not eat it. I didn't even feel like I could eat the onion rings (by the way, THEY were fried the proper way). The waitress came over and asked if I wanted a box. I said, "No, I just can't eat that". I go up to the cashier and he asks how it was and I said very disappointing. I proceed to state everything and he gets rude and says it's the waitresses fault for not putting on the ticket no pickle, no lettuce, no tomatoes. Who makes their wait staff write everything the customer doesn't want on a burger?! So, I'm expecting him to at least give me some kind discount for it being so bad, but nope. He expected the whole bill to be paid. I paid $12 for a meal I did not eat! I hope he's satisfied with his $12 check being paid because it will be the last check I pay at Sonny's. I know it's up for sale, I certainly hope whoever buys it cares more about their customers than the current owner. read more

Very disappointed, they have a price on the menu of 14.99 but they do not honor that price, you are charged 15.99 for all you can eat. When questioned about this, I was told that the patrons are the ones that rub their finger on the marker and remove it. Felt like they were accusing us of doing this. The fish is the ends of the fillets, skinny and tough, you will get a piece of nice fish, but only one. We came in a group and one of the waiters told our table if we were through, to move on as other people were waiting to be seated at the door and motioned with her hand to move from the table. That was not true as it was some of our group waiting on everyone. There was no one there. She was not polite in stating this. One of the waiters had spilled a glass of water trying to take too many at one time from the table and another waiter was cleaning it up. She was not happy and thought we had done it, not us. Wow! Came here for Saturday afternoon lunch and the whole table ordered all you can eat catfish, and we shared an order of pickle Os (deep fried pickle slices). Pickles came out first and were delicious... nice thick cornmeal batter with some spice to it...dipped in ranch dressing and oh so good! The catfish came in huge portions with coleslaw, pinto beans and fried potatoes (with a few jalapeños and some juice mixed in from the spiciness of them). Oh and two small hush puppies with corn in them the catfish was perfect- light cornmeal batter, big meaty pieces, and perfectly fried! We had two refill bowls for the table of 4, and barely got through them. Honestly, for $11.99 - the all you can eat catfish is a steal! It would have been worth $11.99 even without any refills. All you can eat also included the sides! Comfortable family atmosphere with friendly waitstaff. We did have to wait quite a while for our food, which is apparent unusual. But that's why 4 stars instead of 5. I would eat here again in a heartbeat and try other things... everything we saw come out was huge portions and looked fabulous! read more

Things I love: seat yourself, ranch made in house, atmosphere, prices, bacon, baked potato, overall value, and my server Colleena. Opportunities for improvement: fresh lemons for iced tea-didn't have them, chicken portion on my dish seemed a bit undersized, and green beans portion size seemed skimpy. Stellar little place worth taking a detour off the highway for! My friend and I stopped by after hiking at Lake Thunderbird and were pleasantly surprised at how cute the interior was and how sweet the workers were. We are not locals but it appeared the locals made a connection with the staff there which was very nice to see! Good place for some simple good ol southern food. Had plenty of leftovers to bring home I ordered the chicken fried steak, super delicious. I am one to check reviews before eating at a place, and also as a foodie I don't care to go to places where I can make the dish myself but this place was just great! The food was pretty good fish with beans, coleslaw, corn and hush puppies. The server was nice very and friendly. One of our guess as for her fish to be fried crispy. We waited and never received the request. 30 mins later the server bought out the same non crispy fish and said the kitchen just drop the fish to fry crispy. Another 30 minutes still no crispy fish. So, we had to leave to drive back to Dallas. So we inform the cashier about the issue. The cashier was Rude. She said, well she couldn't do anything about it. So, I asked to speak to a manager. Then she said, I will charge you for a 2 Pc . I said, you missing the point. She didn't eat any of the fish. I requested for the manager. The cashier said, she's not calling no manager today. I had the so-called famous chicken fried steak, the steak was tough and there was more breading than steak. The hamburger steak my husband had made him have explosive diarrhea. The mashed potatoes were instant, I was looking for a good meal so I didn't have to cook. I have been in food service for over 30 years and this food was worse than any hospital food I ever ate. The chicken fried steak here is the best; I always order it with the gravy on the side because the steak is too good to cover with gravy. Order it with the green beans and you will not be sorry. The catfish is really good, too and is the all you can eat special on the weekends. It also comes with pickled green tomatoes which are wonderful. The decorations and atmosphere are fine but the burger I ordered literally started to disintegrate the moment I picked it up the sad lonesome slice of tomato on it still had stem on it. Like the bun the patty disintegrated almost instantly and I couldn't taste much else through the grease. Oh yeah the grease I've never in all my years eaten ANYTHING so greasy NEVER in all my life. Had a very good dinner at Sonny's Cafe on a Saturday. We arrived around 6:30 or so. It was about halfway full, maybe a little more. So, we were able to sit right down. Our server arrived with our drinks after a couple of minutes, but advised us we would have to wait a few minutes to order as she was a little busy with a couple of other tables. I appreciated her telling us, most servers I think would just ignore you with no apology or explanation. We had excellent service throughout the night. The facility is large with plenty of table and boot seating. We had a booth, very comfortable and easy to fit 4 people. There is a bunch of stuff all over the way, it's got a Western theme going on. The joint was clean, as were the restrooms. Plenty of parking. We heard Sonny's Cafe had a fantastic chicken fried steak, so that's why we made the drive from Norman. To start, we went with the salad bar. It was sparse, missing a lot of ingredients you find on typical salad bars. Cheese was one ingredient missing, and it only had maybe 3 dressing choices. The potato salad was homemade, it needed salt, but I would eat it again. But, overall it was an underwhelming salad bar. Our food arrived after around 10 minutes. For $10, you get a decent sized chicken fried steak, your choice of potato (I went with mashed), a roll, and another veggie (I went with fried okra for a dollar extra). The steak was less than half covered with gravy. Now, I like it when the entire steak isn't drowning in gravy. I like to taste the steak on its own. But, this was lacking. The steak had an excellent steak to breading ratio. I only had a couple of bites that were just breading. But, the steak lacked seasoning, which was a disappointment. They get a nice crust and it was cooked well. If it, and the cream gravy, were more heavily seasoned, they would be fantastic. The mashed potatoes were creamy, but lacked any flavor other than potato. They may have used butter, cream, salt, or pepper, but I couldn't taste it. The okra was very disappointing. I forgot to take a picture, but the order we received each had about a dozen, give or take, pieces of okra. Very small side, particularly so when you consider we had to pay an extra dollar for the privilege of ordering the okra. While the chicken fried steak dinner was good, it certainly isn't the best I've had in Oklahoma. What Sonny's has that may be the best I've had in Oklahoma is fried catfish. The special on Saturdays is all you can eat fried catfish with all the sides for $10.99. We saw many tables order catfish, so I inquired it we could get a side for the table to try it. I found out you can get 2 large pieces for $2.29. So, we got a couple of these sides to share. VERY glad we did. The catfish is fried perfectly, crispy on the outside but not dried out. Importantly, the breading is seasoned well. This was some fantastic catfish. I will make the drive down to Sonny's again, but I won't be ordering chicken fried steak. While it was good, I will absolutely get the catfish next time. It's a 5 star version of that dish. read more

A great place to eat in Purcell. Spacious and clean. Fair menu prices with a good selection. Daily specials are inexpensive and generously portioned. Friendly staff for the most part (one server in particular is not very personable, to put it nicely). My food has always been excellent here. This was our second time there. Food is ok, not great. My son ordered chicken tenders and did not get the gravy dipping sauce, he asked for ranch and bbq sauce instead. When the bill arrived they charged .69 each for the ranch and bbq sauce. When I asked the waitress about the 2 charges she said she was sorry they make her charge it or it would come out if her check. Come on .69 for a very small cup of ranch and .69 for a small cup of bbq sauce. I have never been charged for dipping sauces for chicken tenders. I make this trip quite often from Denver to Shreveport. This was a great find. Now I have two must stops to make each trip. Al's Chickenette in Hays Kansas and now Sonny's Cafe in Purcell Oklahoma. They are far enough apart I can be hungry again before I get to the other one. I had the chicken fried steak. Top shelf too. It's a hand battered and deep fried steak. Comes with REAL mashed potatoes and gravy. Too big for me to eat all of it so i did something I RARELY do. I got a Go Box. It's got to be really good for me to take the left overs home. I mean REAL good. I even ordered a desert to go because i was so impressed with the meal. That desert later tonight will be a perfect way to end the day. I would say Sonny's is a HAVE TO stop on 35.
