I tried Sonny's Breakfast Spot and ordered the fish with cheese grits, sausage, and it came with two biscuits. The fish was actually pretty good, especially with their hot sauce. Unfortunately, the cheese grits had no flavor. Even after adding the salt and pepper packets they gave, it still wasn't enough. I ended up taking them home and adding seasoning salt and extra cheese just to give them some taste. The biscuits were okay, and the honey inside helped. Overall, the fish was the highlight of the meal. But they get a lot of service because people kept coming to pick up their meals. The service wasn't bad. read more

It has been a decade since I've been here and I'm so happy I stopped by today. Customer service: I was greeted immediately upon walking in and informed of the specials going on. I placed my order and had my meal in less than 10 minutes. Food: The food was delicious! I have no complaints. I got 3-- 1/2 breakfast plates with bacon, grits, cheesy eggs, and, a biscuit. It came up to $29 for all 3 plates. The eggs were so fluffy and cheesy. The bacon was cooked perfectly. The grits were very filling. The biscuits were so fluffy, soft, and yummy! They come with jelly already in them. They accept many forms of payment and the place was very clean. I will make it a habit to stop here every time I'm visiting. read more

I saw a creator post about SONNYS as a place to visit during black history month and since it was so close to me, I went the same day! I arrive around 9am and it was pretty packed. The restaurant is pretty small and take out so there's no sitting areas to eat so most people I noticed were eating in their cars. I ordered a platter with fried fish, hash browns, eggs, chicken wings, and biscuits. I lived in South Carolina for a long time and I have yet to have a traditional southern breakfast like this in the Miami area! This was be first time. I was impressed the biscuits were so good! It came with an apple butter that was so tasty. The chicken, and eggs were well Seasoned too. The catfish was good as well but I did feel like the portion was a bit small. In terms of service, the ladies in the front were nice. I did wait a bit longer for my food, and because of that, they gave me a free sweet tea/lemonade for the delay. Which was nice. Sonny's is an institution in Hallandale Beach. If you want an authentic southern breakfast, this is the place to go. They are known for their biscuits, and you can order breakfast in a bunch of different ways. I ordered the 1/2 breakfast and it was very filling, served with 1 egg, 1 biscuit, grits, and 1/2 order of bacon was still 4 slices. After I ordered, I noticed you can get corn beef hash as your meat. I can't wait to come back and try that. Lots of the reviews mention long lines and waits, and I do see where the line forms. That said, if you come during the week, it is an easy in and out. Everything is made to order, but was still in and out in 10 minutes. Highly recommend. read more

Had a disappointing experience at Sonny's. Even though it's takeout-only with no seating, they wouldn't let me wait inside with my 5-pound service dog in a secured bag because I didn't have an ID card. I left and went to Derry's on Pembroke Rd, where it was busy but they welcomed me with great service and no issues at all. read more

I always order grits with cheese and butter , egg (fried) , with hash browns apple jelly with whole wheat bread. Every time I call to modify my order the customer service is special and the person in the other line is always patient. I have not been there so I cannot speak on the Ambiance, but when I drive by there it looks like a nice chill breakfast diner. read more

This place has been in my breakfast rolladex since high school. 13 years and it's still as good and as busy as it use to be. There is nothing like a great country breakfast. Eggs, grits, biscuit, sausage cooked to perfection. This mom and pop store gets unbelievable busy every single weekend so be ready to wait. Oh and don't think you can call ahead. If you like greasy food this is this restaurant for you. Stopped there because I was doing business in the area. I order salmon croquettes with grits eggs and biscuits. I threw everything away because it was to greasy. The food had no flavor!! The grits had to much butter the eggs had no flavor . The croquettes were a mixture between a conch fritter and grease the biscuits were indescribable. Again if you like greasy no flavor food this is for you. And if you don't mine long waits for your food. Never again. read more

This place is mid at best. I don't see what all the hype is about. I ordered 1/2 pork chop breakfast. They must've went to Walmart and brought the thin sliced pork chops, because not only was it very thin it was very small, Like common since didn't say because they are so small and thin I'll give the customer 2. My family used to bring us here for breakfast when we were growing up and I used to love it. So naturally, I had to go back as an adult and I was initially grossed out by the inside, they definitely need a make over, but thankfully that didn't stop me because the food is still fire!!! I was really glad to see after 20+ years they've kept the momentum with the breakfast plates, everything was just as good as I remember. Of course the biscuits and apple jelly stole the show, you can't have a Sonny's breakfast without those. The service was awesome and the prices were even better, will definitely be returning next time I'm in FL. read more

I used to come here all the time.. the food WAS good!! I cannot believe we paid $42.00 for two complete breakfast grouper orders. Unfortunately we did not check the food before we left. Complete disappointment when we got home. We literally received 4 to 5 little nuggets of unseasoned grouper! Not even half a piece of grouper!!! Runny scrambled eggs.. What a rip off!!! I've heard so much about this place for years, but it was only a recently I made a trip here. I went here fat 7:30am to get some breakfast and was I in for a deal. I ordered a half a breakfast: sausage, grits, eggs, biscuit and drink for $5! The apple jelly biscuit is to die for. Everything was delicious! Not to mention quick and friendly service. I've been a fan of this Hallandale gem since my high school days. This mom and pops spot is known for their homemade apple filled biscuits and sausage combination. I usually order the 1/2 fish breakfast meal which includes scramble eggs (I add cheese), grits, fried fish (swai), a biscuit and a flop to drink. Although the grits can use a little more salt, the fish is seasoned and fried to perfection. If you are ever in the Hallandale area and looking for some southern cooked breakfast, be sure to check this place out. You wont be disappointed. Also, all transactions are cash only. read more

Haven't been to this restaurant in quite some time because of my last incident. However the breakfast isn't bad. At the same time it isn't anything about them that sets them apart from any other soul food breakfast spot. I think it boils down to your location and your willingness to drive. While Sonny's apple breakfast are quite delicious, the breakfast as a whole it isn't worth my driving there for just the biscuits. read more

The notion that it's cash only in 2019 is not a good look. Look I get the whole businesses pay fees to accept credit card and a percentage of each transaction that you want to avoid. But debit card payments are less expensive than credit cards to process. So at least give that a try. I think In the long run it will balance out with the amount of customers you might be losing by not offering at minimum a debt card, and just cash only. read more

We finished our food and no one ever came to our table again- while the workers were walking around helping the 5 other tables or talking amongst themselves. After sitting for 15+ minutes with our finished food, I just went to the front and waited for someone to check us out. I don't recommend this place and will not be back.

Overall, it's a decent place if you're in the area and want a quick breakfast, but with so many breakfast options in South Florida, I don't see myself going out of my way to return. Let me start off by saying that I've been going this restaurant since I was a kid in high school until now in my thirties. Every time I've gone into this place there has been an issue with the owner, Mr. Sonny and his son who runs the register with his wife. One thing I've learned is that, Mr. Sonny is homophobic. He's said several times during our conversations that he hates the fact that there are gay men who wear dresses and how it's disgusting that a man can marry a man. I figured it was a little bit of dementia and being old and set in his ways, not adjusting to the new times, so I ignored it. What I cannot ignore is the fact that every time I step into this place (I stop going for long periods of time and will come back hoping it's different. I actually really like the food) I am hit on by either the son or the owner himself. The owner looks to be at least in his late 80's early 90's. His son looks to be in his mid to late 40's early 50's. I am in my early 30's. He has spoken about constantly of wanting to participate in sexual activities with me and is always speaking about my looks and even went as far as to say that he wants to give me money. In other words, be a "sugar daddy". He's talked about how he's renovating his home for me and how he feels like he would be a good man for me, and how he wants me to wear make-up whenever I come to the restaurant to "look pretty for him", and etc. This man is old enough to be my great grandfather. His son has made advances to me when his wife his not around, which I feel is a great disrespect. His wife is always sweet to me when I come inside and it kills me to know that her husband would treat her in such a way. Today was the last straw and I will no longer be coming back to the restaurant at all. I came in today and hardly anyone was inside. I kept hoping that the owner would not be there because I did not want to have another uncomfortable conversation or feeling uncomfortable with the sexually based comments about my body and looks (I also want to add that each time I come here, I'm getting off of work and I am fully covered, if I wasn't that still isn't an excuse for the behavior but I'm just making note of it) I walked inside, spoke to the wife and ordered my food as usual. The owner, Mr. Sonny, was there and invited me to sit down and spoke about not seeing me for a while (because again, I will not come for months at a time hoping things would be different) and then proceeds to tell me that I've put on weight and I need to lose weight. The absurdity and the gall of this man to constantly speak on my looks is absolutely appalling. The food is not worth any of this ****. I hope one day the owner and his son will change their ways in dealing with frequent customers because I am certain that they will lose business if they continue on with this type of foolery.
