I had the absolute most, embarrassing , terrible experience at this place tonight. Me and my husband just got off of a long day of work and school and never get to spend any time together so we decided it would be nice to have a nice late night date night at one of the local bars, while their drink ms are expensive they are delicious. We called Sonny's earlier and they said they were open until 11.so we were like great let's change and get over there, super excited even though absolutely exhausted. As we were about to order our drink the bartender aggressivelytold us he wouldn't serve us. After politely asking why he said it's because it looksd like we were on something " which was so offensive and I feel like suing the bar for calling us out like that in front of so many other people that were in the bar. Such horrible customer service. I understand where he is coming from but he didn't even talk to us or look us in the eye. It seemed like they just wanted us out bc they were crowded or something. This is the best food in Dover. The bar looks just like any other Dover dive, but once you get in and sit down, you quickly realize you're not just sitting at another boring cookie-cutter pub with the same old menus. At Sonny's they go out of their way to make everything fresh. They add something unique to everything on the menu and everything that I've tried so far has been incredible. The cocktails too are amazing and interesting. This place is worth trying for the beet-based veggie burger alone, which is one of the most delicious options in the seacoast area. Sonny's is our Friday afternoon hangout.The clientele is varied from old farts like me to tattooed trendies. No matter what you are into you will be comfortable. They have recently revamped their menu. I recently tried their chicken wings and meat loaf (both new) and I wasn't disappointed. The wife unit had the tofu banh mi and loved it, The menu is limited but everything I've tried since they have launched has been tasty. They offer a number of killer signature drinks as well as a half dozen or so craft beers on tap. The service is friendly and attentive and ownership is on premise. I really don't see a reason to go to any other bar in Dover. The staff is super friendly and the food is amazing. Definitely try the pulled pork sandwich, it is like nothing I've ever eaten before. I went here for dinner recently with some friends from Dover, honestly not expecting much. Being from the Boston area, whenever a friend says they have an amazing restaurant near them, I'm usually pretty skeptical since my bar for eating out is pretty high because there's so many great restaurants near me in the city. Sonny's forced me to throw my preconceived notions out the window... it's awesome. The food was delicious, the service superb, the cocktails novel and the overall atmosphere is just really pleasurable. You can tell the owners put a lot of thought into every aspect of the restaurant and paid attentions to the little details. I'm really looking forward to going back next time I'm in Dover. read more

My wife and I stopped by here on July 3rd looking to grab a quick beer. It was fairly close to last call, so I honestly didn't expect to get served, but what happened was actually a whole lot worse. When we walked into the place, I immediately felt like we weren't welcome there. Maybe it was just me, or perhaps the place being full of people who were obviously regulars was what was doing it, but there was something about the atmosphere that felt foreboding, and I personally enjoy the whole dive bar scene, so that is saying something. As we approached the bar, it became even more obvious that this was probably going to be a no-go. The bartender looked less than impressed. Now, as I said, I didn't expect to get served anything. My wife had already had a couple of drinks anyway, so I was okay with walking out empty handed. However, when my wife asked the bartender about beers, no only did he tell her that he didn't have time for any of that, but he very rudely told her that she looked like she had already had a few and that he didn't need any more people in there. I am a restaurant manager at a very successful small pizza and pub chain with a number of different stores in a few different states, so I have experience with shutting off or denying customers drinks, and this was exactly the opposite of how it is done. The lack of candor was a complete shock, and if that had been a bartender at my store, I would've at the very least given them some sort of formal warning. The worst part is, I got the impression that it might have even been the owner, which is even more appalling. I was sober, and when my wife pointed out that maybe I would like to have a drink, I simply decided that this place didn't deserve a single dollar of my hard earned money and told the guy was I was more than all set with having him pour me a beer. As we walked out, some freak heckled us, adding to hostility that was already present before we had even tried to order anything. Maybe the food is good. Maybe the drinks are good, too. I honestly wish I could tell you, but after that experience, I can assure you that we will not be back, and this goes strongly on my list of places to avoid. Great people, live music all the time including some really great jazz and horn bands. Vegan food options on the menu. Some of the mixed drinks are spectacular, I like the extraordinary gentleman, a nice bourbon and champagne concoction, or the live free, a lemon and gin beauty, don't miss modern love, strawberry and vodka heaven. read more

This place just had their one year anniversary, and I am really glad they are having some success. The owners and staff are awesome and the patron's the place draws are right up my alley. First thing I will say is I did not eat in Sonny's I got an order to go I got the spare rib and the shrimp with peppers firstly the shrimp with peppers only literally came with two shrimp that was it nothing else The Spare Rib literally was just one piece of spare rib not even a quarter of a pound was just one piece of spare rib and lentils with a few pieces of meat cut here and there it tasted good but it was a bit of a rip off read more

Sonny's has OUTSTANDING cocktails. Best. Ever. Seriously. Our only problem with Sonny's is that the food can be wonderful. But then you go again the next week...and the exact same item on the ever changing menu is completely different and not as amazing as it was the week before. I completely understand they rely on fresh local ingredients, but the menu should reflect that. Simply putting "vegetarian burger" on the menu, making it with mushrooms one week and then out of beets the following week is disconcerting to your patrons. Fantastic place for food and drink. Dover has a lot of nice places but Sonny's is a cut above. It is still casual but the food absolutely outclasses other casual pub style places in town. Some places in Dover are "eh, it is good if you are local and want to eat out" and others are "if you are visiting Dover this is one place you should go." Went to (Sonny's) for Father's Day this morning, and I was seated next to a large party all of whom claimed they were recovering from a wedding the night before. The service staff at Sonnys was nothing but nice and accommodating to the table; however, we continued to listen as they continued to slander the staff. It was disheartening to say the least, as one of the women claimed to work in the industry... to top it all, I watched as the same lady told her friends (all 8 of them) to disregard any tip to the hard working staff. The staff is horrible. I've been a part of a group of six that tried this place twice. Both times rude, bad service. I mean so bad that we will NEVER give this place a chance again. The food is fine, but nothing special. Certainly not anything that you can't make at home at least as good. There is no way anyone should put up with this poor service and the rude, anti-customer attitudes and behavior of all the staff we encountered when there are so many superior options in Dover. Ok - this review is for everyone trying to find a great Sat/Sun brunch location that you don't have to wait long for (we loveee the Brick House but sometimes get tangled in a long wait with a band a bit too loud). AND they have amazing Bloody Marys & mimosas. Everything we ate (party of 10) was farm fresh, the chef's menu has something for everyone. I had the special belgian waffles with glazed pears & homemade whip cream. Almost everyone else had the benedicts - they were all hand-crafted and to die for. The waitress was super attentive,very knowledgable about the menu. I seriously recommend Sonny's for brunch. We waited about 20-25 minutes for our food, but we were a party of 10 and everyone said it was well worth the wait. While the Brick House is good, this place takes it a step further with a crafted menu of omlettes, benedicts, pancakes, waffles, vegetarian options. along with great unique breakfast drinks. Great local and international beers (old rasputin always on tap) stoneface, north country ciders, and smutty. Great bar food, def above average. Deviled eggs and the fried chicken are some of my favs (as well as the creative salads, but hich I find rarely in bars). Amazing staff and service always quick and attentive, make anything you want including tons of unique cocktails that always taste delicious! Too many great cocktails to list! We were so excited Sonny's installed huge new windows along the street. With the recent warm weather we thought we'd give Sonny's another shot and enjoy a window seat. The service was so rude we left before ordering drinks. Apparently the new trend at hipster restaurants is to provide an "I'm too cool to be serving you" attitude but unfortunately it doesn't work for me. Prompt, kind, and courteous service is still a must regardless of how hip an establishment is trying to be. We won't be returning. read more

Nice tavern atmosphere, some high top tables, some regular. Water was at the table in wine bottle looking carafes, a nice touch. We went with another couple. My wife and I got the 2 pork plates, pork tenderloin and the pork shoulder. The other couple each got the fried chicken. All of us liked our dinners. They were not your average tasting dinners but rather a blend of unique tastes that none of us had ever had before. My pasta, that came with it, with butternut squash in the middle was really delicious. My wife liked her cosmopolitans but I ordered their drink special of the day called naked and something (I forget the real name) and it came in basically a shot glass with a stem, the smallest drink I have ever seen. All for a $10 special! That was a rip off but my wife's cosmos were only $8 and they were more worth it. The beer prices and the food costs were typical, $15-16 for a tavern dinner. Coors light was only $3 in a bottle and on tap specialty beers were around $6. All in all we liked it and would definitely go back, just not order their drink of the day! read more

I love Sonny's! I rarely gave it a second glance because from the outside it doesn't look like much. However, my husband followed them on Facebook and occasionally showed me their posts which all looked delicious. We decided to try it out and we're not disappointed. The atmosphere is casual and cool. A bit hipster, which I usually hate, but it suits this place. Waitstaff are friendly and usually pretty prompt. We've tried nearly every dish on the menu and love just about everything. Some faves include the Brussels sprouts, the mac n cheese, the burger, the mussels, and especially the hush puppies. OMG those hush puppies!!! Their drink menu is outstanding. Clever, creative, well executed- I've never been disappointed trying anything on that menu but I especially like the Extraordinary Gentleman, the Radio Radio and the Smoked Manhattan. Prices are reasonable for the quality that you get. The food can be heavy and is NOT diet- friendly. Go to Sonny's when you want to splash out a bit. The southern influence in the food is strong, but in a more high end execution. I've only ever been disappointed in one dish which was the pork chop with grits and a 6 minute egg on top. My egg was well beyond six minutes and the yolk was hard, not even the least bit runny, which was the whole point of why I ordered it. Our food had sat in the window for several minutes before being brought to us, so I don't doubt that the kitchen got it right but in the delay getting it to our table, the egg over cooked. However, having been there several times, that's the one and only complaint I've ever had. Not too shabby. read more

We were pleasantly surprised at the menu and the atmosphere. I don't think i've seen a menu quite like this. It's simple but interesting. I really like this place -- great beers on tap, fantastic drinks, excellent food, and a very good staff. I like the decor quite a bit too. Since they've built the new kitchen, the food has gotten even better. The menu is always fairly limited but they change things up constantly, with a few consistent staples. People tend to refer to this place as a "hipster" bar, but I certainly don't fall into that category and if you look around you'll see all kinds and all ages. Part of that is due to the fact that they have kept some of the old Barley Pub traditions going (trad New Orleans jazz on Tuesday and a general jazz series on Sunday). read more

Every time I go to New Hampshire, I make a point to go here. The cocktails are insanely good. Most notably the Old Fashioned, the Mingus, and the gin and tonic made with their own house-made tonic. Their food has gotten to be pretty much as good as the drinks. Very creative menus, but very tasty. In other words, inventive but never at the expense of being satisfying. Atmosphere is a good mix of nice but fun, with a good mix of people. You'll fit in and feel welcome no matter who you are or what your scene is. read more
