Seriously the best place. The folks that run it are nice and inviting. They are accommodating and tolerant of a baby in the early hours of the day. We waited for over an hour and a half for food during brunch. The food was ok - some plates were alright, whereas others were disappointing. The short rib hash barely had any short rib. The portions were small for the price. Our server was sweet and the manager? Comped us for a dish, however I don't think I will be dining here again. read more

Sonny's is a good place if you're looking for a quality cocktail. The beer selection is weak but the cocktails are high quality, although pricey. I've only had dinner here once but it was good. Brunch was a little disappointing in my opinion... there are better brunch options in Dover (such as Brick House). Overall, I like Sonny's but it's not a place I'd choose to be a regular at... just not my scene. read more

Stopped in here on the way up to North Conway a few weekends back. We found easy street parking and seats at the bar around 8pm. The food, service, and ambiance were all on point. It's a cozy space that is clearly well loved by the local crowd. For food, we ordered the hush puppies, collared greens, and steak frites. The hush puppies were perfectly crunchy and well seasoned, and the accompanying whipped maple butter was the ultimate pairing. The collared greens with pork and onions were appropriately bitter and fatty. And the steak was so juicy and tender and the frites were crunchy and salty. The chive and duck fat butter that adorned the dish was admittedly a bit confusing - we weren't sure if we were supposed to lop a slice off to eat with our steak, or see if it would melt into a puddle to dip in.. we ended up leaving it out, though it looked intriguing with the peppercorns on top. Been in once since they've opened and was a fan of how Barley's treated the space for years. Absolutely love what Sonny's has done with the place! Much brighter and cheerier inside than Barley Pub and the place seems to have doubled in size! Though I loved the simplicity of the Barley Pub in this location (the new location has lost my business for good...) it is nice that Sonny's has expanded. Menu looks incredible especially for those like me with dietary restrictions. Vegan, vegetarian and health concious food on the menu... Love it! read more

We love this place- and we will still go to get drinks. However we really miss all of the vegetarian options they had before they changed the menu. The tofu Bahn Mi and the mushroom poutine were amazing! The vegetarians of the seacoast are begging you guys - Please add a few vegetarian meals to the menu or bring back the old ones- they were so good! read more

Sonny's is one of my favorite restaurants of all time. I'm a vegetarian, and their veggie burger is incredible. I could eat one of them every day of the week. The other stuff on their menu is equally unique and tasty ---- amazing fries, hummus, kale salads, and cocktails. Drinks are also super unique and delicious. The lemon merengue is a must try! Amazing place. Prices were very reasonable for the quality and quantity of food. I had the turkey burger and I can honestly say that it was one of the best burgers I've ever had, even though it wasn't even beef. All the flavors of the caramelized onions, roasted red peppers, mozzarella cheese, basil, and garlic and herb aioli, melted together into one big juicy burger. The juices ran down my hands each bite. My husband and I were searching for someplace near our house that was open a little later, and Sonny's popped up. Service was overall very, very slow, even though there were several servers and only a few tables. As for the food - I had the Cuban sandwich and my husband had the PBLT (pork belly, lettuce, tomato). My Cuban was delicious - the combination of meats was perfect, and the mustard/pickles/swiss cheese really completed the sandwich. It was huge - I was only able to eat half and took the rest home! My husband's PBLT was very disappointing - the sandwich would have been really good, except the pork belly ruined it. It was like a full inch of gelatinous fat. Very unpleasant. Despite the service and the pork belly, we will probably be back to try other entrees. read more

Sonny's has absolutely gorgeous food & drink, and it's without doubt one of my new fave places on the seacoast. My girlfriend and I visited last week and had a fantastic meal, and both left grinning - together we ordered (and promptly destroyed) the entree mac & cheese, the pork chop, a side of the fried brussels, and a kale caesar. We also sampled some of their bourbon cocktails - the Mingus, and the Extraordinary Gentleman. Both were fantastic, and I ordered another Mingus after finishing my Gentleman (that sounds saucier than I meant it to). They have quality beers too, but I thought I'd already tried most of them, and I felt like cocktails that night. Our server was awesome & attentive, and the bill came to less than $100, which I felt was totally reasonable considering the feast. Oh, and also, we arrived on jazz night, so there was great live music playing the entire time. Quality. All in all, it was the best meal I've had out in quite a while, and I think Sonny's instantly ranks in my top-5 fave places on the Seacoast. read more

We stopped in here last summer for a quick early dinner with no expectations, hadn't heard anything about Sonny's since they opened in the Barley Pub place. We were impressed and went back to again. It's pretty unassuming from the outside, and I'm not sure what the theme is if any, but so what.... The cocktail menu was really interesting and creative. We had the A Forest which was made with Gin, Sage liqueur,pine, lemon, honey syrup, bitters and an egg white and a Smoked Manhattan where the glass was smoked with wood chips. They were really well crafted and delicious! The draft beer menu was also good. The deviled eggs appetizer was great-for $3(that's right THREE) you get three deviled eggs halves. One had duck poutine with 3 small french fries, duck and cheese curd all on an egg half. The others' had a fried jalapeño, and the third had caramelized onion. A really delicious bite. A trio of tacos followed with monkfish cheek, short rib and pork belly with accompaniments that were perfect. A trio of sliders included a spicy pulled pork, duck and a mini BLT. There was only one desert offering-Bananas Foster bread pudding-I'm not much of a dessert guy but we split it and my wife thought it to be "last meal worthy". Our server was really knowledgeable about the food and drink menus and the service was excellent. We'll definitely be back to work our way through the menus! read more

We just wandered in here after strolling around downtown Dover a bit. What a happy randomness. The drinks and food are simply phenomenal. The "gnocchi tots" with black garlic aioli are to die for - light, airy, and savory. Our cocktails were terrific (I mean, seriously, who else would think to make a cocktail with Laphroaig and leather bitters?), As was the beer (LOVED the Henniker Company aged on toasted cherrywood and chief with white rum). Simple, delicious salad, perfectly cooked cod, corn fryer with maple fritter, and floorless chocolate cake were all just wonderful. Our server, Amanda, is the co-owner and was attentive and enthusiastic. All in all, a wonderful and unexpected evening. read more

Very cool tavern-style bar. Lighting was dim but that kind of added to the effect. My boyfriend and I had burgers that were delicious, and we both tried some new beers. On the menu there are beers that are labeled "short pour" and others that are not. I ordered a short pour beer and my boyfriend didn't. Both of our glasses came in a short glass though. He asked our waitress why and she told us about beers with alcohol percentages lower than 5.5% are typically poured in taller glasses. She seemed knowledgeable, but things should be labeled accurately on the menu. That was our only complaint however! Great place to try different beers and have a great burger or apps. I loved the decor and it was a nice size space but felt intimate with the lighting. read more

Very cool! I make a point of stopping in when traveling through. The food is unique and excellent with a fine selection of beer. Also they have some killer signature cocktails that you'll want to try. I would say its trendy and a little hipster, but the vibe and crowd is well mixed. I would recommend the Asian pork sliders...a favorite. Also, something you don't find often... Kale chips that are out of this world. Lastly, a great variety of music is always in the background. I travel 5 days a week for work and cover a territory from Maine to West Virginia...eat in lots of places, most of them forgettable..the food here was OUTSTANDING...the pulled pork Bahn Mi is the perfect sandwich...the pouline was incredible and the chef even made kale taste great in the kale side salad..if you're ever near Dover stop in and give it a try you won't regret it...fantastic staff too! read more

I have been in before, and reviewed. One of my friends and I decided to give it another shot. Our other friend felt real uncomfortable with the crowd the last time and wouldn't come back. The first time in we loved the food but the crowd was definitely intimidating. But I we NEEDED kale chips, so I had to go again. When we got there we found out the menu had changed. NO KALE! Very upsetting but we stayed it was early on a Saturday night we weren't going to let kale ruin our good times. It was rather quiet, with a few older folks. So we sat down at a table and ordered some drinks Looking over the menu we saw that the prices had jumped not much but enough to notice. 20 minutes later someone came by to take our order (after they noticed our drinks were empty). My friend got the chicken bahn mi with tater tots( she loved it last time). I got the meatloaf, which I was very excited for. When we got our food it looked great! Then we started eating :( my meatloaf was very dry, that would have been ok but the carrot paste had a strange chalkiness to it, and the potatoes tasted like they weren't seasoned very well they had flavor but no salt. my friend thought the bahn mi was a huge let down. The chicken had a strange texture and the flavor wasn't as good this time. Some of the things she love about the bahn mi the first time was the crunchy parts of cilantro stems and thick chunks of cucumbers that helped cut the heat, this time all those things were totally different. Then to top it all off we noticed the angry, loud, shitfaced, crowd of punks and skin heads that made us feel uncomfortable last time showed up. We were being ignored again and couldn't get our server to bring the bill. WTF! We got out of there as soon as we could. Then went across the street to fury's, and danced to some reggae. Walking back to the car parked in front of the pizza place we had to walk thru a huge crowed of the punks being rude to us. Not impressed at all with this place or the crowd that is there. read more

Well, it was a little disappointing. We live in Dover and have been eager to try this place out, but with two kids, it's hard to find the time. We finally got the chance last night. The decor is trendy and cozy. Our waitress was friendly and efficient. Our beers were cold and tasty. They have a nice selection on draft. The food was just OK, though. Maybe they are trying too hard with a modern menu. We had a deviled egg appetizer. That night's flavor was "avocado lime with fried onions." They tasted the same as the plain ones I bring to cookouts. I had a fried chicken waffle sandwich. Tasty. The side was field greens with dressing. For $12 I expected a slightly more substantial side. My husband got hanger steak with fries (frites, as they call them) and duck butter. On the first go-round the steak, which he ordered medium, was very rare. The "frites" (please just call them fries) were in a pool of blood. He sent it back for some cooking. it came back a few minutes later. The very conscientious waitress watched him cut into it. He didn't want to be a pest, but she knew it still wasn't right. He got a fresh order of fries while he waited for third attempt at cooking the steak. It came back much better and was tasty (it came back both times without the duck butter, though). If we go back, we'll just stick with appetizers. read more

My second brunch experience at Sonny's, will not be back. From the start the service was slow, although it was quite busy at first so that was understandable. However, the time it took to get every member of our table a drink continued to be exceptionally slow, even as we were left as one of the only tables and not a single person at the bar. One member of our party (who's food did not come out with the rest of our's because her order had been 'cut off' the slip in the kitchen...) respectfully approached the bar to express her disappointment and immediately a comment was made putting the blame completely on the fact that our large party had never made a reservation and the staff were expected to accommodate us without notice.... This was later debunked as false, as we all had planned on this for a week and made the reservation on Monday, as another server was able to discover in less than ten minutes searching through the reservation book. Overall, I was extremely dissatisfied with the service and the lack of manager interference. The food was good, mimosas way overpriced for their size. read more
