Best sushi place in Arlington, I never really *loved* sushi until I started coming here. Love their maki roll lunch special!

Out of Uni and out of Toro. This place offers japanese, Chinese and Thai cuisine. It's a mix of everything. I suspect they output more Chinese dishes than anything. A bit disappointed in them being out of two staple items on a Saturday, when the place was pretty empty. Oh well. Not bad. Not great. Only ordered sushi. Seems like we should have ordered some cooked dishes. I regret not trying a Chinese dish. As far as sushi goes, this wouldn't be my go to, with some awesome choices very close by. Service was OK. They decided to give us wine that had been opened at least the day before, if not longer. We sent it back. At least they acknowledged it was opened previously. The interior is dated. Seriously, one of the best Omakase experiences I've had! Chef Tom is amazing and I would love to come back and eat here again. I was very fortunate to come here with a very good friend as an invited guest. Such a great selection of sushi and sashimi. It was superb. Also, my favorite was King Crab. Interesting first experience at the neighborhood sushi spot. Inside quite dated and could use some new paint. Got a broken spoon for the miso soup, splintered chopsticks, and sushi was just alright. With so much great sushi around hard to stand out. Will give it another go given recent reviews. read more

I come here for lunch and find the lunch specials to be a great deal. Miso soup, salad, main dish, Maki, etc..

It's off the beaten path (on Summer Street rather than Mass Ave), and not easy to get to on public transportation, but it's pretty close to the bike path as it's across the street from the Skating Rink. There is off street parking in the lot behind the restaurant if you drive (which I do). In my opinion, Sono is second to Toraya for Sushi in Arlington, but I only go to Toraya when I am willing to wait in line on date night. I've never had a problem sitting immediately at Sono. It's never crowded. I get the sense that they had more sit down traffic before the pandemic. Service has always been fast and friendly when I've dined in. The interior is well designed, but a bit worn out in some areas (this doesn't bother me, but would not be impressive on a first date). There are four or five seats at the sushi bar, and there's a full bar if you're into drinking alcohol. I order takeout sushi from Sono rather than other places in Arlington, since there's a kitchen and my daughter won't eat sushi. If some people in your party want sushi and others don't, then Sono is your answer! read more

We continue recommending this place after trying different dishes in the menu. We would have to say it is a hidden gem at Arlington. In particular, the lunch special has good cost and quality ratio. I wanted to try this place since it had good reviews. First off, this place did not seem to be clean from the floors to the walls. The service was OK since I was the only one there. I ordered an entree with tempura which was basically flavorless without the dipping sauce. Secondly, the veggie slices were cut so large, they were extremely difficult to eat. Lastly, I was given miso soup with my meal, but it just tasted like warm water, so it was basically inedible. I will not be back! read more

Nice place in Arlington, spacious and friendly. I just had the shrimp pad Thai and LOVED it. It was not over cooked, not over sauced, had just enough to make it the perfect dish. This is actually the first time I came here. I'm staying over with my sis in Arlington for a while and they told me Sono is a good place to go for fresh fish and sushi. Now, I wouldn't say the service is the best, but the food definitely is!!!!! I ordered shrimp tempura maki, uni sushi and salmon sashimi! They are all great!!!! The uni sushi got me flying.... And the price is so cheap I can't even believe it!! The boss himself is so kind cuz the waitress ordered something wrong with me, and he didn't even blame her. Not impressed. Mediocre sushi. Awful crab Rangoon. They must have been deep fried in old oil. They were not fresh and delicious. The restaurant itself is really cute. Excellent local sushi place. I enjoyed lunch with my brother and his son-in-law on a quiet Thursday. We all enjoyed a fatty tuna sashimi starter followed by the maki special- a lot of maki for the money. Lots of choices of maki- I had the spicy tuna, spicy salmon and California. The sushi and sashimi was generous in quantity and very good, but just short of great. I've had fatty tuna which seemed to dissolve like butter in my mouth and this was just a bit better than normal tuna. The spicy tuna and salmon weren't as spicy as I like, but this is nit-picking because this place is really good and I will be back. Service was friendly and effficient. read more

We are HUGE fans of Sono! Absolutely love coming here. My husband and I have been regulars since the first month they opened. They were spotty in the beginning so we didn't frequent it as much, but the last year and the half, they have improved to near perfection. I'll comment on service first. Absolutely top notch. The waitresses are friendly, efficient, and prompt without being intrusive. You really can't get much better than those attributes when it comes to customer service. The owner, Tom, is always there. I think he works 7 days a week. And he is so hands-on. Whether he's helping the front of the house, the back of the house, the sushi bar, or occasional deliveries....you're in good hands with Tom, and the people who work for him. Now the good stuff: SUSHI. Always fresh! How do I know they're fresh? We live right across from Sono. Literally a minute slow walk. Our front window faces the restaurant so I always know when their seafood deliveries come in. It's not just the freshness, although that is the deal breaker for sushi, but their cut is very generous. And I don't mean the rice part either, I mean they truly load you up with the good stuff. And the hot Sake! You can't do sushi without Sake. We usually order 4 carafes, but on occasions, we'll do 5. We walk back responsibly to our front door, looking left to right, to left again before crossing Summer St :-) We are lucky to live in such close proximity to Sono because these guys are awesome! Plenty of street parking, however they do have their own parking lot behind the restaurant. The bar counter gets pretty busy during the weekends. I guess people enjoy watching the chefs do their thing. We prefer the corner table.... read more

All around pretty average. Sushi was not great but the gyoza and kung pao was very good. Not crowded at all, we went on a Saturday night and only one other group was there. The seating needs to be reupholstered, but otherwise the restaurant was fairly clean. Probably skip it as a sit down restaurant. read more

Went here on a Monday night and it was completely empty, so the service was fantastic! We ordered a variety of drinks and menu items to share and they all turned out great, nothing spectacular. Would go here again and is in a convenient location for the Arlington residence. read more

I ordered the Hawaiian Sunshine, Cherry Blossom, and Roe Nigiri, the fish was super fresh and the sushi didn't fall apart. Inside was very calm and friendly servers. Delicious sushi and noodles. We ordered the miso eggplant, kimchi udon with shrimp, shrimp pad thai, and crazy maki - all had great favors, fresh ingredients, and weren't too salty. The shrimp in the noodle dishes were large and plentiful. Delivery was fast (30 minutes from order to delivery on Friday night). We'll definitely be ordering from Sono again. read more

Zero stars. Ordered online for pick up, waited a half hour, then went to Sono and let them know I was here. Guy at door confirmed my phone number and order, then said "a lot of people ordered sushi tonight" and it'd be another 25 mins (which is code for, oops, we didn't make your order yet and didn't have the courtesy to call you with a more accurate time). OK, fine. Took a little stroll, came back in another half hour, let the guy know I'm there. Fifteen minutes go by. Stick my head in again and ask him to come outside. Tells me my order still isn't made. He offers me some other order that was made (the person apparently canceled), but it wouldn't work for my eaters. Said "sorry" but clearly couldn't have cared less. I gave up and went to the place next door, which immediately took and made my order in the time it took me to write this. Don't know what's going on at Sono, but covid or not, it's a mess. read more

Tom and the whole crew at Sono are outstanding. I have lived in Japan half Of my life and I have to confess that's the first place I have eaten outside Japan that the taste can mirror the hometown taste. Friendly environment and cooked to perfection. I strongly recommend to eat here. read more

Second visit to Sono last night did not disappoint. We were happy to have a more private table in the corner by the window. Sono is a bit small and a few of the tables are a little too close together. Fortunately there is always some background music playing to help keeps conversations more private. There is also a bar with additional seating as well. The sushi was delicious and beautifully presented. Almost too pretty to eat so I just had to take a photo of my plate. Last night I enjoyed the Sono Maki which consists of tuna, salmon, yellowtail, crab, avocado and spicy mayo, served with soybean paper. The sushi is very fresh and tastes amazing! I have yet to try the non sushi menu items so cannot comment on those just yet. I am so glad to have a really good sushi restaurant so close to home. This place is quickly becoming a favorite of mine. read more

I'm thrilled that a place with a bar has opened on Summer Street! My friend and I went to Sono last weekend for a late lunch. We ordered 1 order of the large sake, which was great. It came hot and we both got three "shots" each. Then for an appetizer we ordered the Money Bags. They were ADORABLE! They came in pastry pouches and were tied with a scallion ribbon, tasty, just like a Crab Rangoons. Now to sushi, we ordered the Caterpillar and Crazy Maki and shared them. I always order a Caterpillar roll at every sushi place I visit, so I was a little disappointed. The ratio of cucumber to eel was off, way too much cucumber. The Crazy maki was great, perfectly done. Our total was around 34 dollars so prices are fair. The owner is really friendly and helpful. He's been there every time I've gone by and he checked on us/was welcoming during our lunch. We will definitely be back again because it's right down the block from my friend's house. I'm planning on trying the noodle dishes and lunch specials soon! I tend to be very picky about my sushi, and I can wholeheartedly say that I LOVE Sono! Their sushi is consistently fresh and delicious, and service is always quick. This place used to be great! Wifey and I enjoyed all vegan offerings, but lately the food has gone way downhill. Our last order consisted of a tiny portion of vegan fried rice absolutely doused with kelp (never contained kelp before. I hate sea vegetables). Absolutely gross and oily. The only discernible flavor was from the kelp ick.. Vegan chicken and veg were ok (if you like kelp), for 14.00 there should have been more than a few slivers of protein. And, again, someone doused this dish with kelp. Yuck. spring rolls were good, and kelp free! meh, we're going back to Zhu's and Shanghi Village. read more

I really want to like you and support you (and we've been coming here for years, giving you many second chances since you opened in 2014), mostly because you're so conveniently located to my house - but tonight's dinner was just the worst! Nothing tasted fresh (in fact, I couldn't finish my Crazy Maki rolls because the crab tasted so fishy and awful I was worried it would make me sick). I kept checking with my kids if their food tasted okay, but when my daughter didn't finish her salmon entree, I knew something was wrong. And then the service. There were only two other tables with customers, but we were abandoned for about 20 minutes toward the end of our meal when we were eager to leave. I think we're done with this place because for what you get both in terms of the quality of the food and the service, it's just ridiculously overpriced. So long! read more

We decided to try a new place in Arlington as we dine out a lot, and saw that they have a raw bar - Oh guess what they don't - first strike. Tried the fried oysters - not fresh for sure - but asked for Fatty Tuna, they didn't have it. So we got regular tuna sashimi - it was good - maybe a 7 of 10. Ordered a second drink - asked if they could make a plum martini with vodka - made it with gin.... big gaff.... They should really take the raw bar off of the menu and off the website as it really was the only reason we decided to try this place. The service wasn't spectacular and we gave it a try, won't be going back. read more

We are 100% not going to be back here. I feel I shouldn't have tipped either. Let me start with atrocious service: Place wasn't slammed at all, so there is zero excuse for such crappy service. With us, there were only three total tables with customers. Yet you could see blue moon more often than the waitress. Appetizer shows up at our table... no plates. We had to go get them ourselves. Waitress brings tea... no water. We asked for waters. She sees us with a kid, gives us total of three napkins for all three of us to share. Really? Couple next to us had an accident, guy spilled the soup... he had to clean it up himself. All dishes came out at different times. This is all 101 basics. And this waitress failed every one of them. Food was mediocre. Sushi and sashimi just unremarkable. Wherever they get the fish from, I am not sure their fish monger likes them. Soba noodles... I have had a lot of those in many different places. What we were served wasn't soba, it was $1 ramen noodle at best. I gave them benefit of doubt to come home and research it. Yep. That wasn't soba noodles. BTW, green tea... should have just given us the teabags and hot water. Lipton crap. I regret leaving a tip. read more

I've now been to Sono Asian Cuisine twice and have been very pleased with both visits. Like many of the other reviewers I have been impressed with the high quality, friendly service from the owners down to all the waitstaff. They are really trying! The quality and wide selection of sushi and sashimi was excellent on both my visits. I asked for a an assortment of sashimi and left the choices up to Tom, the head chef. He made up a beautiful plate of about five different types of fish, each of which was very fresh and well sliced. The highlight of my most recent visit was the Hamachi Kama. This is one of my favorite Japanese dishes and the version at Sono Sushi was the best I have ever had in the Boston area. It was unusually thick, perfectly cooked, very moist, not overly salty and served with a nice ponzu dipping sauce. The Hamachi Kama was large enough for two people to split as an appetizer and at $10.95 I thought it was a bargain. I don't agree with some of the other reviewers that the prices are on the high side. For the level of quality and the portion sizes being offered I think Sono is in line with other Japanese places that are serving quality food. read more
