Let me start by saying I don't like the ordering process. At all. I called ahead of time and actually made a reservation, I probably didn't need to. Nobody else was in the entire restaurant probably just there at 6 o'clock on a Saturday night. Maybe a first red flag? Not sure. We were seated by somebody that was very nice. And then she just walked away. We didn't know we had to order any other specific way. There's a QR code you click. And then it shows you the menu. It just would come back and take the order. I don't. The woman finally walked by and asked us are you going to order? Which we responded, and she explain to her the order for the app. So if you're gonna be sitting inside of my opinion. Still order for a sushi roll platter of spicy sushi, and a Pupu platter for two. Just basic fare nothing special. No drinks, just water. It came out very fast. Almost too fast. Like it was back there, and they just needed to heat it up, but I'm not sure. Each item was very routine. Nothing to write home about. Solid Chinese American Pupu platter, and solid Japanese American sushi. She came back twice to refill my water. But nothing else. And. You have to check out on the app as well. It was just a weird experience. I don't think we go back. When we were there, three or four phone calls. Surprised this has such low rating! It's not the best sushi in town but it's pretty generous for the price. Usually sushi places around here will engineer these tiny little cylinders of fish and charge the standard $8-$15 for a roll, but Blue Fuji I think didn't get the memo and is still making pretty chonky makis. It's not the best I've had, but it hits that sushi spot. The staff is also pretty happy and accommodating, the place kind of has this low-key vibe. It might help that the times I've been here it's been pretty empty, but honestly I like that versus the insanity that places like Fuji get up to. Generally a good place to go for sit down or take out, kind of confused why this would have such a low rating. I thought by serving sushi and not poisoning your customers your default was four stars. read more

This was my first time eating at Blue Fuji & I was very happy with my dinner. 4 rolls were split between 2 people & the total including tip was $64. I ordered a shrimp tempura maki, flamingo maki, crab meat tempura & house dragon cooked special maki. I ordered pick-up through the grubhub app & it had listed if you order a specific kind of sushi then a free edamame will be given with the order. Easy online ordering - gives a time for when your order will be ready for pick up however in my case I did have to wait an additional 20 mins past the time I was given. Parking STINKS, on the street if there is any and is a busy road. The hot and sour soup and veg lo mein was very good! I would love to try more from here especially their sushi. I would do delivery but that fee is quite high so maybe i'll try to dine in. They had some specials so keep an eye out for those if they have any. read more

I call at the 40 minute mark and I'm told they don't have my phone number. They ask where I ordered. I told them From the order system on their website. She says "15 more minutes" I wait 20 more minutes and she calls me letting me know the food is ready. I respectfully let her know that the service was poor and it wasn't the first time... She slams the door in my face and locks it and walks away saying "sorry, sorry". This has nothing to do with covid. When you say your food will be ready at a certain time, it should be ready give or take a few minute. You should not Wait double the quotesd time... plus they lost my order. In need of something quick and this restaurant was able to get me hooked up. I had a moderate appetite, so I had decided on steamed Gyoza and Scorpion Maki. The Gyoza came on a bed of lettuce, and the Scorpion Maki had seaweed salad and the usual accoutrements of sauce, pickled ginger, and wasabi. Steamed Gyoza was the way to go, it was small and delightful, happened to opt to eat the lettuce also. The Scorpion Maki was fairly good. The service was indirect contact, contactless payment. Came across this location as part of a Groupon deal and I must say I was pleasantly surprised. Typically when it comes to Groupon deals there's definitely a hit-or-miss element to what you get but for this restaurant it was definitely a hit for us. Street parking was abundant for the four of us when we arrived at around 1:30pm on a Sunday and we were promptly seated. The interior is actually quite nice and cozy (not very large but comfortable). I got the General Gao's chicken which advertises its chicken as organic. While it was organic or not I couldn't really tell you but I enjoyed it a lot since they didn't really on heavy thick batter and sauce. The thin batter and large chunks of chicken made for a very filling meal that didn't make me feel terrible after consuming which was surprising. Overall, I believe the reason for the slow business (only saw one other couple dine in while we were there) is most likely due to the location as there are many closed shops around the restaurant which makes it hard to spot if you're just driving through. If you're in the area and are interested in some chinese/japanese cuisine (my friend got their sushi make and hand rolls and was surprised at how good it was) then definitely give this place a try! read more

How is the rating for this place so mid, I ask myself? The sushi is great and half the price of comparable quality dishes in Asian cuisine hot spots in areas like Allston and Harvard/Somerville. Julie, the manager that's always there waiting tables, is a ray of sunshine with her bright disposition and attentive service. The lighting and layout in the backroom are perfectly comfortable, I could spend hours there with the right crowd. Dig into the low-star reviews and you'll mostly find bougie characters that want to be pampered from the moment they walk in the door. This is nonsense. That's not how you enjoy the food of another's culture. Stop being xtra and go spend your energy on a garbageshoot like tiktok where it fits and belongs. Love this place! Their sushi is really fresh and there are many different maki rolls, specialty rolls, hand rolls, and nigiri to choose from. Overall the quality is really good. My one complaint is the price. For the size of the rolls, I do think their prices are a bit expensive. However it wouldnt deter me from ordering again. read more

I have celiacs and ordered delivery for gluten free spicy tuna rolls. Unfortunately it was absolutely TERRIBLE. They did not actually use any tuna in the spicy tuna roll. We had a roll and were shocked. It couldn't be that bad, maybe the first one was a fluke. We tried another and had one bite of a roll and could not finish, as it was 99.9% the crunch. We called the restaurant, heard them deny anything was wrong in the background on the phone, and then they asked us to send the photo proof. They also said once they received the photo, they would call us back. We happily obliged, thinking this would be a very easy remedy since they could not argue with an actual photo. Little did we know, this would start literally a 30+ minute text message argument with the restaurant! During which, they tried to tell us that we maybe had ordered the wrong item (sent a picture of the receipt which they also had a record of, of course), then they tried to claim it was normal, and then told me that their "real" gluten free customers would know. Not really sure what that means, but asked if they were trying to insult me. They also never called us back despite saying they would before hanging up on us, and choosing instead to text for 30 minutes. This texting continued despite us asking multiple times for them to stop. We do not trust this restaurant, and would never order again for fear of them trying to get revenge after our experience with them. Grubhub was fantastic and offered to call the restaurant on our behalf. The restaurant apparently told them they were unwilling to refund or remake. Included in this review is a picture of our spicy tuna roll, and the text exchange. If you are looking for gluten free Asian food, including delicious sushi, we recommend going to Fuji at Assembly. We've been going to other spots the past 2 years as prices here are super high and we've had a few issues. I always find myself waiting a decent amount of time past when my order should be ready. One time I went to pick up an order (pre-Covid) I arrived on time and was told a few minutes. I kept being told my order would be up soon but after waiting 30+ min they told me the delivery driver took it on accident so I had to wait for him to return, but they definitely could have made me a new order faster. I was offered soup but had no interest. We also ordered for Christmas Eve this past year and prices were outrageous. Interesting location, and not great street appeal to be honest, but we love adventure so in we went. We were the only customers the whole time we ate here. They did have a good delivery business though. Why do I mention this? Because in my experience sushi place that don't get much business don't have the freshest fish. We ordered many things, Veggie Tempura, Scallion pancake, mushroom soup, Szechuan Style tofu (ma po tofu!), and New Wave Maki (woo!!!). High marks for the tempura and soup! Both fresh and delish. The scallion pancake possibly could have used more scallion. The new wave maki had tons of stuff in it, tuna, avocado, and a few other things that escape me at the moment - please see the photo and you can spot them too! The Szechuan style tofu was good - I liked the peas they added! I'd go back to Blue Fuji - they have both Chinese and Japanese food! And I would order delivery from them too. read more

Blue Fuji is pricier than the other sushi options in Medford Square and offers no AYCE. You get what you pay for, the sushi is very fresh. The taste and quality make this the best pick and value for your money. They offer luncheon specials running from sushi to bento boxes to Chinese food. The pu pu platter is huge and very good, but not as good as Mays! Mays is old school and the best I have ever had, Blue Fuji is good and has a new twist to it. The miso soup is very flavorful and Blue Fuji does not skimp on the tofu or greens. The salmon maki is extremely fresh and the salmon is very rich in flavor. The California Roll is solid. The sweet potato sushi was a pleasant surprise. The sesame chicken was less than spectacular however the flavor and freshness of the chicken and broccoli is worth noting. read more

I've eaten at Blue Fuji twice now and it is very solid for a small local spot. The restaurant is pretty small but they have a couple different cuisines to offer. The regular sushi rolls are very reasonably priced ($9-12) and you get 8-10 pieces and the specialty rolls are very unique and creative. We got the wonton soup, egg drop soup, bbq spare ribs, shrimp tempura roll, eel roll, spicy tuna, and the spicy mixed fish roll. The soup broths lacked a lot of flavor and the wonton soup had a bunch of random veggies. The spare ribs were sooo good and it's a fairly large portion. The sushi was fresh and all of the rolls were really good. The spicy tuna lacked the spicy but it was still very good. read more

Gluten free consumers beware!!! Those without allergies, consume with glee!! This is hard for me, because I have tried to be upbeat about Blue Fuji just to support a local Medford restaurant. But I have to tell you, as often as I have tried, 5 or 6 times in less than 2 years, the restaurant staff do not practice what they advertise. I recently called for a delivery. They refused to make the drunken noodles gluten free. Not rocket science, you leave out the soy sauce. I reminded them they have done it before and on their own flyer is states, "can accommodate most items for allergies". They said they could not. Fine, unimpressed I asked them what the ingredients were in the pad thia, I wanted rice noodles. The young man on the phone preferred I tell him my specific allergies. (by law they can ask). I told him what I know usually comes in pad thia, I forgot peanuts, I don't work there, they do (by law when asked, they need to tell you). They should know what ingredients come in a dish!! So I got a plate of rice noodles with peanuts delivered. Nothing more, nothing less. I called, explaining that is the exact reason I asked for the ingredients list. They took the rice noodles back (literally came back to my house to get them) and credited me the dish. I asked for the owner to call, to change the statement on the flyer so it is not faulty advertising. I still have not gotten a call from the owner. It took me two weeks of deliberation as to whether or not I would write this review because I do not like being negative Nellie, grumpy Gretchen or complaining Connie but enough is enough. If a restaurant can not accommodate, I will skimp and go with what I can get. If you are going to advertise as being "organic and accommodating" then be true and not blue. Do not fuji around with your customer care and ignore someone who would love to do business with you. Shameful, see my finger wagging. I doubt faulty advertising is legal, I know it is at the discretion of the business to accommodate and when asked to state the ingredients but I also definitely know it is bad customer service!!! Sad, as a self-employed person I know the importance of customer loyalty. Obviously Blue Fuji does not. The reason why it's not getting 5 stars is because the whole pick-up situation wasn't the best. i ordered online, so there's no way for them to warn me, but they had a large order ahead of me which through the whole kitchen for a loop and so my order was delayed a good 20 minutes... for pick-up! sad. but! once we did get the food, it was excellent. crab rangoons - really great flavor, I think there's chives or scallions in there that added a really nice taste and texture to well-fried-rangoon. The rolls that we ordered all were super fresh and well balanced. Not too much rice (sign of a good roll!) ordered yellowtail, fatty salmon, and normal salmon sashimi. It's not the best yellowtail that I had (best was from Toraya in Arlington!), but both salmons were amazing! also ordered stir fried udon noodles. that was just okay. It was what it was, and it's exactly as advertised. if you're really craving it - it'll be fine. If not, you should put that belly space toward more rolls :) read more

Placed an online order for pickup at 2pm since I had to drop something at a nearby shop. They called at 1:30pm just as I was leaving to tell me they'd finished the order early and I needed to pick it up now, didn't care about the scheduled time or that I was just now leaving the house. When I got there I saw my order out on the front step, unwatched, in the middle of a torrential downpour. They also had the doors closed and blocked with chairs, and the lights off. I grabbed the damp bag, ran to do my errand, and headed home. When I got home I realized they'd probably set the order out immediately after calling me, as the bag was also very wet on the inside and the food was completely cold. Whatever the place lacks in warmth, it is outpaced by the completely absent service. I agree with another poster that the ordering process -- scanning a QR code and doing the whole thing, including submission of the order, on your phone -- is weird and annoying. Not only don't you see your server for the ordering, but she doesn't reappear to fill your water glass. Ever. And I accounted for one of only two tables. Still, the absentee service model could have been overlooked if the food had been better. We ordered three dishes: chicken udon, spicy tuna maki, and a specialty spicy tuna roll. The udon was fabulous -- big pieces of chicken, plump and delicious noodles. The sushi, on the other hand, was comically bad. Typically, these rolls contain pieces of fish in them. Not these: both had a sort of granulated tuna paste that barely tasted like tuna and totally defeated the purpose of ordering sushi. Hugely disappointing. Finally, the prices are high for what you get. Not outrageous, but higher than they should be, especially when serving something akin to a processed-tuna food. I won't be back. Sorry. read more

Here it is the end of an era! My partner and I used to be big Fan of Blue Fuji for the last 3 years! We always enjoyed the delicious food and the great presentation of the plates. I start notice changes in the presentation and the service but still try to order from there. Tonight, I decided to go and have dinner there. The big shock of presentation again (pics attached, before and after).. the scallop tata look nothing like before! It tastes bad too! The Agadashi tofu still good and I enjoyed it! The main dishes were meh! The Nabayaki Udon was tasteless and watery! My chef's suggestions, Spicy chicken in strange sauce, was sweet as hell, not spicy at all and rich in starch! Last and most important point, Our server was horrible! He has no sense of hospitality! We felt like he is bothered and angry! Very strange tune when he speaks and the worse is when he brings you the bill while still eating. I was ready to ask for the manager but than I thought nothing better than Yelping it! Never said thank you or welcome or any cordial words that any normal person would say. One advice, even if this young server is the owner ma son or relative, they better move him away from the restaurant! I used to order takeout 5 years ago back when I lived in Medford and the sushi was decent (little pricey though)... so last night when I was in the area and craved some sushi, I thought "let's take my little cousins out for a quick bite." I will NEVER go back to this place again. I should've looked at past reviews regarding the service - that's my biggest regret. We stepped into the restaurant - right then and there the phone rang & the lady asks us to hold one moment while she takes the call which was fine except for the fact that it wasn't a quick moment; it was 10 mins of us just standing there while she was handling her own work matter. After she was done, she finally seated us which only took 1 minute of her time. Smh. This was the first red flag I should've caught regarding the wait we were going to endure to get anything done. I ordered sushi: Bruce Lee Maki, Valentines Maki, Spicy Scallop Maki, Spicy Tuna Maki, and Futo Maki. The waiter warns me that we might have to wait a little bit for the sushi which I said was fine so I even ordered a gyoza appetizer to help with the wait. We arrived at the restaurant at 7:18pm, I kid you not, the appetizer gyoza arrived at 8pm, and only the FIRST ROLL (Bruce Lee Maki) arrived at 8:20pm. Seriously?! My little cousins and I were so hungry and at that point we we were frustrated and sick of waiting. I felt bad b/c there was only one waiter managing 6 tables at once so I think it just comes down to management. HIRE MORE PEOPLE. STOP BEING CHEAP. The waiter was running around like crazy, sweating trying to cater to everyone so we waited it out. But my final straw was by the time we received our sushi, it was only one roll. What the hell was the sushi chef doing this whole time? I just don't get it. Fed up, I tell the waiter I'd like to get the check. He apologizes and says the rest of our sushi rolls will come out in "2 minutes." I gave it another chance. I told him "2 minutes" otherwise I'm out. 2 mins later he comes out with only ONE more roll which was the Valentine's Day roll. Waiter then tells me that they won't be making the spicy scallop, tuna, or futo maki b/c it would take too long. I simply asked him for the check and paid for what we ate. The total? $49.30 including tip for 2 sub-par rolls and bland gyoza. LOL. I'm still very angry about last night. It was a Saturday night wasted. I'm usually one to wait it out and get all our orders first before getting the check even if service was bad but last night was ridiculous. The worst part is these ppl really know how to make money. They make their poor customers wait and wittingly choose the most expensive rolls to make first. I've been to PLENTY of sushi places and I know for sure, if a sushi chef is taking a while to make our rolls, it's because they're doing it all in one-go. This place takes their time to make one roll. Stop being cheap and train your employees better or hire more people.. After leaving, my little cousins and I went to Panda Express, spent $35 for three plates and were SUPER satiated. But relative to my other takeout sushi experiences recently, combined with the impact of the pandemic on consistency and predictability, Blue Fuji is very good by these standards. Goodness, what's not to love here? This place has EXPLODED onto the Medford Square scene over the past year or so. I've seen 2-3 other restaurants fail in the same location and for good reason. This time, they figured out what needed to go in here and it is borderline perfect. The restaurant is small but the ambience is more date-like than I expected, the lighting is dark with soft bamboo wood colors. From Chinese to Japanese, there is little on the menu that isn't simply perfect for the palate. I've had standard chicken dishes with veggies over white rice on the Chinese side. They use the best parts of the chicken, marinaded to perfection and the veggies are beautifully cut and always ripe and flavorful. The Chinese side is also the best value. If you want to upgrade a little..... Another time, we tried the sushi by actually sitting at the sushi bar itself with the Celtics game rockin' behind the chefs. My g/f was treated very kindly throughout the meal. While I selfishly ordered a mushroom soup on my own without asking her if she wanted an appetizer, the sushi chef handed us a seaweed salad ON THE HOUSE. She'll post a picture of it one of these days. I posted a picture of my $20 sushi feast (which is pretty hard to do here, the sushi doesn't exactly come cheap). I kept it fairly standard with sweet potato maki, tuna maki and a special roll of Hawaiian maki. Frankly, I can't remember everything that was in the Hawaiian but all the flavors melted together perfectly and I'll be ordering it again. Presentation is beautiful, the restaurant exquisitely clean and the service prompt and friendly. 1/2 a start less for the prices and one time when Jeremy K. was over visiting, we couldn't reach them for takeout so I actually had to drive there to place my order. As opposed to a few years ago, the quality of service and taste of the food was not good at all. It was not busy at all. Ok, so we forgot our masks. If the restaurant requires masks for it's guests, they should have them handy for those that have been vaccinated and don't carry masks with them. The menus were thrown at us. Prices on menu were not what was stated on the bill. Overcharged us. The quality of the food was not good at all. I asked if they hired a different cook. The answer was no. So the same cook and staff that was very good a few years ago, has become very bad. The only thing that was good was a pot of green tea, that they charged for. Didn't offer us any sugar or alternatives. Good thing we brought our own Stevia. Stevia is the healthiest to maintain good memory and reduce risk of cognitive decline. read more
