Maki Combo
X M.

We are in sushi mood recently and happily found this place in the neighborhood. Mr Sushi is located at corner of Arlington town center on Mass ave. We were surprised that we never tried it before after being in the area for years. It is a small place with a few tables, but it is clean without any dummy odor. We ordered take out this time, sushi delux, sushi special and maki combo. The sushi rice is of high quality with good texture and flavor. The fish is fresh with beautiful color. The chef's choice nigiri offers good variety. And the dinner entree is reasonably priced too. We are glad to find this hidden gem in the area and will come back to try their specialty maki next time.

Never been to the Arlington branch of Mr. Sushi before - my previous experiences had always been in Coolidge Corner. The entrance faces the corner of Mass Ave. and Court Street (I think). The dining area isn't huge, but is decent sized. Single bathroom is located in the back by the kitchen. I paid $16.95 (plus tax/tip) for my combo eel teriyaki/pork katsu which was the same price as a friend's eel teriyaki entree, which I thought was a great deal till I saw that her option came with so much eel and a side of veggies even! My salad garnish looked sad in comparison, especially since both our choices arrived with miso soup and a salad. Dinner was tasty though and plenty to fill my tummy, and the eel was pleasantly deboned. Food arrived slowly for our party, but the service was fine. *** 12/2012 visit *** Chicken Katsu Donburi $12.95 was more than enough for my dinner after having had several sweet treats as an appetizer. The pickled cucumber and carrot wasn't to my taste, but there was plenty of tender chicken, egg, onions, and rice to satisfy me. Never mind the piece of Volcano roll I tasted after decapitating the drizzle of spicy red sauce reducing my volcano mountain to a mole hill. Also, it was nice of the waitress to allow me to swap out my free miso soup that comes with my donburi for a garden salad instead.

With a name like Mr. Sushi one would think we are referring to the master of sushi. The expert, the ace, the sushi genius. I think, at one point in time, this restaurant lived up to the name, but now....well. I visited this restaurant yesterday for the first time in a couple years and was a bit disappointed. I like the atmosphere of Mr. Sushi. It's a cozy, dimly lit restaurant, but tables are far enough apart to offer some privacy. I love the booths in the front window overlooking the street ideal for watching the world pass by. Parking is a little tough, as Mr. Sushi sits on a busy corner along Mass Ave and nearby street spaces are at a minimum. We were greeted promptly and seated right away. It was 3pm and off peak dining hours, so we had the place to ourselves. Our server was pleasant and efficient, but I felt a bit rushed. This may have just been due to the lack of other customers to attend to. I had a seaweed salad, which was decent, but really...can you actually go wrong with seaweed? The spicy tuna roll really has a kick to it. I didn't try any of the special maki selections, but my usual faves, Alaska and Philadelphia rolls were just okay. If you are in the area, it's worth a try. It's nice to have this place as a sushi option in town. I guess I just expect a little more from Mr. Sushi, but three shiny stars it is.

Great food! Love the maki. Mr Sushi is one of my favorite places to eat in Arlington.

A great spot for sushi in downtown Arlington! Came here on a Monday night so it was very quiet and the service was quick. There is a special sushi menu and a standard roll menu. Overall a good assortment of tastes and prices. Our favorite was the Karate roll which had eel and avocado. We also got the Anna roll and Salmon Maki, which were great as well. The restaurant has a calm ambiance and the decor is classy. Would definitely make a nice place for a date! My one gripe is that the paper chart they use for writing down which sushi you want gets reused, so there end up being a lot of not well-erased pencil marks which could be confusing. But otherwise this will definitely become my go-to sushi place in Arlington!

Chirashi Zushi. A little bit cramped in the small dish, but there is rice under there. http://www.flickr.com/photos/reese/289606

Good food at reasonable prices. I don't think it's necessarily the best sushi in town, but other conveniences (like parking) make it worth it. Besides, you know you won't be waiting out in the cold for an hour to get seated and then rushed through your meal. I've only had their sushi, so I'm not sure how the other food is. Oh, and I'm not sure if you care, but I often see asian people in here, so that must be a sign. You go to an asian restaurant, you better see some asian customers. I didn't know about the sushi buffet, so now I will have to go check it out! Thank you Yelpers! *Update* Ok the sushi buffet really sucks it. First of all you pay for anything left behind, including rice, so you better really love rice and be able to eat them all. I would rather have sashimi to be honest. Oh, and I'm removing star because I've discovered that Toraya up Mass Ave (near Blue Ribbon and the Star Market) is so much better and we will never go to Mr. Sushi ever again.

A piece of the Dragon Roll (may not be the correct name): soft shell crab inside, eel on top.

Mr. Sushi in Arlington Center provides a creative assortment of sushi that lifts it above your typical suburban sushi bar. The standards are all there, from nigiri and maki to tempura, but Mr. Sushi delivers those, plus some inventive maki combinations, in a quiet, simple atmosphere. In February 2010 I discovered amaebi at Mr. Sushi. Amaebi is a small, sweet shrimp served raw on nigiri, and only available for a limited time each winter. Unfortunately I missed the window this winter, so instead I tried a new maki roll that featured soft shell crab inside with a full eel outside. I'm blanking on the name (dragon roll, I think), but I would recommend to anyone with a sense of adventure (and lack of sticker shock - they're pricey) to try Mr. Sushi's special rolls. The menu at Mr. Sushi is moderately priced. Not cheap, but not exactly overpriced. I've had their tempura, sushi, sashimi, noodles, and katsu. I've enjoyed them all. That said, I've had trendy, fashionable sushi in Boston, New York, and Las Vegas. I've also had crappy suburban sushi in fits of desperation. Mr. Sushi settles right in the middle, offering approachable sushi for the novice and a go-to place for the sushi lover. Staff is very friendly, and the restaurant has always been clean. Once I have encountered a server who seemed terrified and didn't quite know what she was doing, but in general the staff is spot-on. The atmosphere is not romantic or trendy, but rather basic - a good meeting place for friends. Check out the lunch specials, and if you happen to visit Mr. Sushi between December and February, ask for amaebi!

Kyusu tonkatsu ramen! Beef broth? Fried pork cutlet? Soy marinated egg? Yup. Pretty tasty

What I can remember is that all the food had great visual appeal. Additionally, the flavors from the main ingredient, sauce, and condiments were artfully balanced. I felt that none of the ingredients in the dishes I ordered were decorative. My only minor disappointment is the small portion (though I get that US portions are typically giant...). Service/wait-time/cleanliness (1.5/2): Great service even if there was only 1-2 waiters. Wait-time is decent. Cleanliness is impeccable. One minor negative is the positioning of some of the table that sees the fan above them--the fan sits just below the light bulb and creates a "strobe-light" effect at night. This was incredibly disturbing for me and I had to face diagonally downwards most of the time to avoid the flickering at the top-corner of my eyes. Price (0.5/1): As much as I love what they've created, I just feel the price for the portion we receive is on the expensive side. Rounded to 4 because I love the place.

When I got there place was packed with a few groups waiting for tables. Ordered the crunchy maki, tempura maki and softshell crab maki - everything was delicious as expected. Highly recommend!

The layout of the restaurant is similar to the Brookline location, with the private booths on the right and special booths on the left, main seating area in the middle, and the bar seating towards the back. Only difference is the Brookline location has those cool matcha whisk structures, while this location has cool honeycomb structures. I would've loved to experience sitting in one of those. I always like to eat spicy so of course I got the Kyushu Spicy Tonkatsu Ramen. As always, broth is so flavorful with the perfect amount of spice. The ramen texture is my favorite, good amount of softness and waviness. The boiled egg is marinated just right, not too salty or sweet. The chashu pork is tender. I wanted to try their version of the spicy cucumbers. It's REALLY spicy. But also very good. The flavor reminds me of the Chinese chili oil sweet potato noodles, very spicy, kind of salty, and a strong taste of vinegar. I love snacking on it. The takoyaki is the best of course, perfectly soft and tender, with thin bonito shavings and great sauce. The fries are essentially seasoned the same way. Salted fries with the takoyaki sauces and bonito. The combo works very well together. Thai tea was good and service was great. If I'm ever in the area again, I'll stop by for another bowl.

We thought…read moreabout trying one of the combo options, but I ended up ordering the curry ramen, and upgrading it for $7 to include a Thai tea and bao bun. The bun was delicious, with tender pork and a flavorful sauce and I loved having the Thai tea to sip on. We also ordered the cucumber salad to share and it was nice and fresh and spicy. My curry ramen was delicious and hearty. My partner ordered the #2 and I really liked the pork in his bowl, I preferred it over the tonkatsu in mine. We ended our meal with matcha tiramisu and during the current promotion, we won an order of popcorn chicken to redeem on our next visit. The restaurant is cozy and they make use of the small space with their honeycomb wall. There are lots of employees working, so service is quick and we were able to call our sever to the table with a button when we wanted to order and pay.

It comes with 2 bowls of miso soup, which were perfect on a cold winter night. The boat also includes a martini glass with seaweed salad, providing a refreshing, upscale palate cleanser when you need a moment's break from the fish. I was very impressed with the thick cuts for the sashimi, and the toppings on the nigiri also gave a tiny twist to the meal - while yuzu and jalapaeño are common pairings with raw fish, for example, the strawberry-on-salmon was a novel combo for me! The rolls also add appeal for any eating partners who enjoy their fish in another form. There isn't a lot of natural light/windows in the main seating area, so the lighting is dim and gives off an intimate ambiance that's perfect for a date night - no complaints about the service!

It's the perfect spot for a date night or grabbing drinks and dinner with friends. For appetizers, I highly recommend getting the 3 sampler of tuna, salmon, and yellowtail dumpling to try them all. While called dumpling, it's more like a delicious fish rice ball with special sauce. The house special udon with shrimp, scallop, and fish cake was also really good. I thoroughly enjoyed the chicken hibachi! It's good for being hungry because it comes with soup, veggies, rice, and some shrimp. It comes with yum yum sauce which goes well with everything and a sauce for the vegetables. The service was good, we did ask our questions about appetizers and she gave good recommendations. We didn't wait too long for the food. The ambiance here is great! They have Japanese decor on all the walls including paintings of cherry blossom, koi fish, Mt. Fuji, and even flowers on the roof. Overall, the food here is really good and this is a staple restaurant that I'll keep coming back to!
