DO NOT MOVE HERE!! I've lived here since 2016 and the quality of life and service has gone down significantly. This is evident in all the previous reviews - all five stars, then, it continues to go down over the years. I will not go into every issue, but I will highlight the big ticket items: 1. 16% RENT INCREASE - I never leave reviews, but I am posting this review after receiving my lease renewal offer for October, with a 16% increase in rent, which is absurd! Who knows what the rent increase will look like with the actual lease renewal... probably will be a 25% increase. This is all while they're offering a month free to new residents. Who knows how high they will raise your rent for your lease renewal in the future... 2. MANDATORY FETCH DELIVERY SERVICES - In addition to the 16% increase in rent, they are requiring ALL tenants to pay a $17/mo service fee to Fetch since SonoEast will no longer be accepting packages. This would require residents to have their packages sent to a Fetch delivery address. As someone who works in the Financial Industry, I get confidential stuff overnighted to me all the time, so having a package go to a third party is not going to work. I voiced my concern to management and was told this is the service the building is going to use. They never ONCE asked residents if this a service that we would find useful - when you think about it, this is just another corporate ploy for them to pocket more money. 3. INVASION OF PRIVACY - Because of my dog, I did NOT give permission to enter, which means they are unable to enter my unit unless we make an appointment, but the maintenance team came into our unit twice without notice. I let management know after the first time, and it happened again. 4. BURGLARY AND FAILURE TO DISCLOSE - A couple years ago, there was a burglary in the garage, with many items stolen. The staff up front was specifically told by management to not say anything to the residents. In fact, we lost a lot of good tenants due to this incident. 5. CENSORSHIP OF TENANT CONCERNS - A couple friends of mine in the building posted something onto the SoNo bulletin board about Fetch, and their posts were blocked by management. Not sure how the quality of life here will improve if management is censoring tenant concerns. 6. ELEVATOR IS CONSTANTLY BROKEN - Get used to waiting 10-20 minutes for an elevator. 7. GARAGE DOOR IS CONSTANTLY BROKEN 8. MANAGEMENT TURNOVER - In the past five years that I've lived here, I think the management team changed about 10 times. The best management team was the team we had when we moved in five years ago. The building looked nice, fresh, and luxurious. Since then, ALL down hill. If you try to have a conversation with management, it goes absolutely nowhere and the only response you will hear is, "Sorry, we can't..." 9. AC/HEATING NIGHTMARE - Not sure of the technicalities, but SoNo is on a single AC/Heating system, which means that they can only switch it from cool to heat, and vice versa, once a year. While I understand it's difficult to predict the weather, especially, when we were having extreme 80 degree weather, which then dropped to 30 degrees, there needs to be a better system. Imagine being at home with no heat in 30 degree weather. All while, you are paying for rent and your electricity bill on time. Does this even make sense? I am posting this because management does not hear us, nor do they care about what the residents want, as long as they can profit. In fact, when I burned my finger on the grill downstairs due to one of the burners, so I emailed management to let them know, so they can fix it. Management's response, "Can you send us a picture of your finger?" If management had treated us nicely and with respect for the past five years, while keeping the property in pristine condition, I wouldn't be as opposed to paying the rent increase. With censorship by management about our concerns, and management not having ANY consideration for their tenants once you sign your lease, this leaves me no choice but to post a negative review. read more

I've been living in Sono East for 4.5 years now. Ever since the new manager Rob was hired here a few months ago, I've never seen this building so great. He actually listens to feedback: We have new pool deck chairs. The ugly art on the pool deck wall is finally gone. We have brand new cardio machines. We have better coffee (Dark Matter) and the hours where it is free is wider. He'll be adding fences to our pool deck in the fall/winter so we can still use the grills even when the pool is closed. Great communication with newsletters and posts so residents are aware of updates. We have more building events. General Pros: New flooring and stainless steel appliances. Probably the nicest and biggest pool deck in Chicago. Great building and view. Close to Marianos, Whole Foods, Trader Joes, North Ave bus, Halsted bus, Red/Blue/Brown line trains... and any store you'd ever need. Balconies are covered so you can be out there even when the weather isn't great. 100 mbps ATT fiber internet and DVR and HBO included. Peloton bikes. Dumbbells up to 100lbs and a variety of other machines and such in the gym. Super dog friendly. read more

Lived here for years and enjoyed it. Management is now god awful. We re-signed our lease ~2 months ago and then they blind sided us by saying they will no longer accept packages at the front desk and will be forcing us to use a 3rd party package management service called Fetch Package. A company who's whole mission is to function as a parasite of Greystar properties. They will also be forcing tenants to pay for the service that does nothing but delay your packages in any future leases. Management is deleting any posts mentioning it on our resident portal. Rob, the manager, is useless to talk to. He won't read your emails and will just copy/paste some corporate bullshit response. This place is run by slumlords. read more

Been a resident since the day it opened (6/1/12) and have been happy. Had some frustrations moving in, but those are in the rear view mirror now. It's a great area to live in - walking distance to Whole Foods, the North & Clybourn Red Line stop being key for me. I don't have a car, so the easy access to lots of shopping in the vicinity is great, plus there are two Zipcars parked in the garage that are usually available. The resident community is young - I've had the great pleasure of meeting a number of them thus far and they've all been great. Our pool has been very busy, and for good reason. Its spacious pool deck is a great place to hang out and the building pipes in music - really feels like you're at a Day Club in Las Vegas. The gym is great and provides me everything I need to stay fit and happy. I'd recommend an East facing apartment - the views of downtown are truly stunning and you avoid the afternoon sun that, I imagine, can really elevate your apartment's temperature (maybe I'll be singing a different tune in the winter???). read more

Also, the building boasts a wonderful workout facility and an amazing outdoor area that includes grills, a pool, hot tub and tons of chairs to lay in and soak up the Chicago summer sun. For the environmentally minded the building is Leed Certified and the grounds are kept immaculate by the wonderful staff, including the best door men and security personal in the city. My boyfriend and I have lived at SoNo East for about a year and a half and we love it. Jimmy in the leasing office has been especially helpful since he started a few months ago. He has been incredibly responsive any time we have reached out and you can tell he genuinely cares about the resident experience. The pool is absolutely fantastic in the summer, and, while Covid has obviously changed how much we have been able to use them recently, the rest of the amenities are great as well. We also love the dog park and how many dogs we get to meet in the building! It's also important to note that though a large portion of the residents have dogs, the building's common areas are always kept as clean as if there were no dogs in the building at all! Finally, one of the best parts (if not the best part) of living here is the staff at the front desk. Though everyone is helpful, April is an absolute gem!! I can't even begin to explain how many times she has gone above and beyond her responsibilities to help us and other residents. She is one of the kindest people we have ever met and we are so glad we have her here!! read more

I lived in Sono East for 3.5 years from when it first opened until the end of 2016. I witnessed a number of changes, mostly good but a couple of bad. The Good: The building seemed well built. Very few issues with appliances. Nice laminate floors in the unit. Great views of downtown if you are on that side of the building. Close to several great super markets (Trader Joes, Whole Foods, Aldi, Marianno's, and Target) that we would walk to. The community area is fantastically decorated. The poker room worked well for small groups to meet up with me in the building. The office area had computers we could use if we wanted while down there. The balcony we had made for a great area to BBQ The New City shopping center opened up across the street while we lived here and brought with it a fantastic movie theater. The online portal for residents is a fantastic way to go about selling stuff to neighbors. The Apple store is close by if you use their products and want to get something repaired. There are a few parks within walking distance of the building. They have a large freight elevator for moving in and out of the building that they do a good job managing schedules with. The doorman is great at handling packages 24/7 for you. They have dry cleaning service in the building through PressBox. They have a nice roundabout for getting picked up or dropped off by uber/lift. The Bad: The parking violation stickers for cars in the garage parked in the wrong spot coupled with very faint lines for parking spots got me very fired up. It was the tipping point for me to get rid of my car and just use Uber. They lost my parking spot revenue (not that they cared) and I gained the freedom of not having to deal with these horrible stickers anymore. The people employed to work as a doorman changed a lot. Some were great, others not so much, the constant changeover was frustrating. Building management would often tell us our neighbors complained about our dogs barking too loud when we first moved in. We were threatened with eviction over it. Dogs bark... Not sure what they expected when they let people with dogs move into the building... We think our neighbor who moved out about the same time the complaints stopped was the reason behind all the complaints. Ensure you tell them in advance that you are moving out or there is a penalty to pay. read more

Been living at Sono East for close to 2 years now but I don't think we'll be renewing our leases. I hope to be as fair as possible in this review, so lets run through the pros and cons. PROS: - Haven't had any issues with management and maintenance. They were always ready and quick to answer any questions / concerns - amenities: in unit washer, dryer, decent sized gym, pool and hot tub in the summer, nice lounges on the 4th floor, package handling - location: accessibility, no shortage of stores nearby (groceries...etc) CONS: Hyper thin walls.This kind of outweighs the pros by a stretch. I'm renting a south facing 2 bedroom apartment (corner unit) and one of the walls here might as well be non-existent. In the smaller bedroom which I occupy, you can absolutely hear everything (from normal conversations to the blinds being pulled up). Now I accept that apartment living doesn't equate to complete silence but I draw the line at being able to hear normal conversations. Renters should not have to worry about normal noises of everyday apartment living, especially at the price and caliber of these newer rental units but this isn't the case if you're renting a unit with a similar layout to mine. I was lucky enough that the previous tenant only used the adjacent smaller bedroom as a guest room but I would have absolutely gone berserk if someone was occupying that room on a permanent basis. Now that they've moved out, I can only hope that the next renters will still use that bedroom for guests / storage. Management was kind and attentive to listen to my concern recently but I'm skeptical on anything that can be done to address poor sound insulation between unit walls. We've loved living here for the most part but this seems to be a giant deal-killer. Will update review accordingly if this issue is solved. * I'm sure this problem doesn't apply to all units due to the differences in layouts. read more

We just wrapped up a one year lease and if you a thinking about leasing a unit here, please read this: A HUGE WASTE OF MONEY. 1) Ripoff: We paid $2,800 for a 1-bedroom with parking for 740 sq/ft. The view of the city was nice as we faced east, but now the New City development is coming up across the street so that means construction for the next 12-18 months. 2) The management treat you like you are 16 years old. Weekly emails about what you are not allowed to do. You have to wear wristbands in the pool area; no this, no that. I get those emails from HR at work, I don't need them from where I leave. Plus they don't enforce them. The 4th of July pool rules were: NO SMOKING ON POOL DECK, NO GLASS, NO HOLDING CHAIRS WITH TOWELS. When we got to the pool at 11am all of the chairs had towels on them but no one there (sun hits pool deck at 12pm). People smoking and glass bottles were spotted in various areas. How can I take the management seriously when they do not enforce their own rules. 3) The doorman are lazy, especially one named Edmund. I cannot tell you how many times I got home from work, had a package waiting for me (that the front desk hold for you) and he is there eating/talking on his cell phone or having a personal conversation with another tenant. One time I waited for 5 minutes and a lined formed while he chatted someone up and didn't even look over and acknowledge us. 4) I agree with Vince C.'s review from 3/23/2014, the first floor stinks! It smells like sewage/bathroom order all the time. 5) The parking spaces are small. Unless you drive a SmartCar, you have to squeeze your car into the spaces. 6) The garage door opens painfully slow. I know this sounds somewhat ridiculous, but I have lived in other buildings where the door opens very fast. 7) The neighborhood is a cluster, hence the "Clybourn Cluster". It is extremely over developed, too many stores, too much traffic. At peak times it takes you forever to get out of that area. Especially with the British School there, if you leave too late in the morning or come home too early, you become a victim of the traffic. Add the new hotel that's being built around the corner on Fremont, its going to get even busier. Its hard to tell who the alderman is in this area since it borders so many different wards, but CDOT and the alderman need to do a traffic study over here, it is really the worst. 9) Now for the unit: Our apartment was not cleaned when we moved in, carpet was not changed (even though they claimed they would put new carpet in) and it smelled like dog urine as the previous tenants had a big dog. The place was extremely small and until you move furniture in, its hard to really notice how small it is. No screen in window or door which was too bad because you want to keep them open on the few decent nights Chicago has good weather, but bugs will come in. 10) The one that drove me nuts: the garage door opener. The building give each resident a fab. My wife and I lived there so we got two, one for each. Except one of the key fabs is also the garage door opener. My wife and I each used the car each day so we had to switch key chains which was a pain. It might sound silly, but trust me, it gets old really quick. We asked management for an extra fab (even offered to pay for one) and they would not do it. Their claim was security reasons. I paid $250 a month for garage parking an I can't have an independent garage door opener to keep in the car? Really? 11) There are 3 elevators and it seems like one is always broken. They are always slow and packed with people, you wait forever to get an elevator. 12) The most inconvenient move in/move out times. Austin, the broker that sold us on the building, said he would let us move in early so we could take our time moving over from our old place. What he didn't tell us is that he was going to charge us for those 5 days and even better, we have to move out by July 12th. However we found a place with a lease that started July 1, so we were moved out by July 2, but we had to pay for those 12 extra days at SoNo. $1,100 gone that was a complete waste. For a building that claims to be a "luxury" rental, everything about is stressful, unprofessional, dirty (small/urine carpet) and they treat you like you are a child, for close to $3k a month. You can get much more for your money elsewhere in Lincoln Park, Bucktown, Wicker Park, etc. We moved to a new development in Ravenswood (brand new) and got 1,300 sq/ft, a 2nd bed/bath and parking for $2,300 a month, and its on the Metra stop so its easy to get to work downtown. In conclusion, SoNo East is NOT WORTH THE MONEY AT ALL!!!!!! read more

I moved in opening day (6/1/2012) and have been relatively happy with the building, location and staff. Initial move-in was a bit hectic but could have been because I was coming from NC sight unseen. Most of the neighbors are nice and considerate; of course there is the occasional outlier; however, that happens everywhere. Vince, Dave and Terrell that run the maintenance staff are awesome, always on point and willing to help out. The door staff are overworked (there should be two at peak hours) but stay generally friendly; however they don't seem to stick around very long which is unfortunate. From what I hear their terminations seem to be unreasonable but I'm obviously only hearing one side of the story. The building itself has great common areas and the east facing apartments have amazing downtown/lake views (I honestly don't know if the view could get better). The dog run is large in comparison to others in the city and my dog thoroughly enjoys it. Thankfully the building is exceptionally dog friendly and seems to cater to pet owners (a facet I completely appreciate as I have a 100+lb dog). The apartments don't have tile backsplash in the kitchen nor a garbage disposal or stainless steel appliances; items you don't really miss until you don't have them. The floors seem cheap and scratch, buckle or separate easily. The worst of the construction seems to be the noise separation (or complete lack thereof) between apartments; unfortunately I hear every single phone call or conversation of my neighbors. At first, I thought the noise issue was just me (maybe I have super human hearing abilities?), but friends on other floors have similar issues. The neighborhood is great, good shopping and some awesome restaurants just a short walk up Halstead (for the days you don't do the usual Burger Bar or Wood Fired Pizza- both of which are killer). Transportation isn't bad, Red Line or the 132/8/72 buses get you just about anywhere you need to go. All in all, the location is great if you want to be slightly removed from the touristy hub-bub but stay within easy access to just about everything. Hands down, one of the best experiences that I have ever had with a building management company. The amenities are top notch. I would highly recommend this building to anyone who is in search of a dog friendly building. I recently received a dog adoption inquiry from a tenant at Sono East. I needed to speak to their property manager to verify what their dog polices were. Their property manager responded immediately to emails and phone calls. They provided a copy of their dog policy and were incredibly warm and friendly. This building will allow 2 dogs...no weight limit as long as they are not on the insurance breed restricted list. They do charge a non refundable pet deposit, but that is the norm. I was welcomed by their 24/7 doorman; in fact both the dog and I were greet by name. He also had treats ready, which was a welcome surprise. The building has a clean, secured by coded key outdoor dog run. They also have doggy clean up poles with bags throughout the property. The entire building is clean, spacious, and altogether amazing. If you are looking for a dog friendly building with roof top pool, entertainment areas and gym, move in here! read more

I have been coming here because of a dog walk located in the building. There is zero parking to be found in this area and it doesn't help that it is located by Whole foods and New City. But if you lived here it is basically heaven. The inside of this place is tip top; 3 fast elevators, well decorated, plenty of places to sit if you have to wait for someone, a tv by the elevators and overhead tunes. Goodness! Despite a few challenges I would say we very much enjoyed our time living at SoNo East. The good: Hardwood (nice laminate) floors in the living space, comfortable and durable carpet in the bedrooms. While they are not stainless steel, the kitchen appliances are still very modern and upgraded. Maintenance staff is so wonderful. Most of the front desk staff is wonderful (besides a few grouchy/lazy people). Location location location. Close to the CTA red line, north ave bus, halsted bus, PLUS tons of stores. Perfect for getting errands done. The amenities are perfect. Great pool and gym. The grills are nice too. The bad: Parking is super expensive in the building. We parked across the street in the lot attached to the british school for half the price. We don't have a dog, but we love animals so we did not mind them in the building at all. The biggest problem was that a lot of owners allow their dogs to pee in the hallways and the building does not clean properly so the stench is kind of permanent. Gross. The kitchen sink does not have a garbage disposal and often gets backed up. The shower drain also often gets backed up. !!!!!!!!!!!!! Most IMPORTANTLY - they raised our rent 23% after one year of living there!!!!!!!!! Unfortunately there are no laws in Chicago that protect tenants. We had to move to a smaller unit since we wanted to stay in the building. Not cool. Be aware of this before signing a lease. Also, the management staff turned over quite a few times. Dominique in particular was really stubborn and pretty hard to deal with. Overall we were sad when we had to move away for work and will miss living at SoNo East! read more

Overall, I had a pretty good experience living in SoNo East. The building is well maintained and the front desk and maintenance staff are kind and responsive. I will say that the units are built a bit cheaply. I could hear my neighbors through the thin walls. The kitchen floor also slides apart (the wood paneling is very cheap). Here's my biggest issue... The leasing office did nickel and dime me when moving out. They charged me $25 for not returning one of those 10 cent plastic wristbands for the pool because they claim the bands play the same role as key fobs. Their customer service is actually quite terrible when it comes to excess charges. Just be careful when moving out so that they don't get you. I have heard some stories from other tenants about getting charged a ton for "damages." Also, they raised my rent about $160/year, hence my move out. read more

I called again today and finally spoke with a girl named Nia whom was very short with me which made her rude. She did not seem interested in doing her job and helping me find an apartment. I had scheduled a meeting to view the available 1br and 2br apartments. To my surprise, I had a hard time reaching Ben, the agent I was scheduled to meet. After calling 3 times and no one answering, I was forced to leave my vehicle unattended in a tow zone to enter the building. I enter the building and proceeded to ask the doorman if there was reserved parking for guests scheduled for viewings. (Please note that the doorman and the entire first floor had a very foul smell. It smelled very similar to a wet dog. The smell was very unpleasant! For a building asking over $3,600 for a 2br condo, I found this to be a bit shocking!) The doorman informed me that there was no parking on site, but if I drove 2 blocks I could find free parking on the street. After finding street parking a few blocks away I made my way back to the building. I entered and asked the doorman where I could meet Ben. Ben is the agent that I was scheduled to meet to view the available units. The doorman then informed me that the leasing office was on the 6th floor. I proceeded to the sixth floor and walked around the entire floor looking for the leasing office. After a few minutes and no luck finding the leasing office, I decided to call the front desk and confirm that the leasing office was on the 6th floor. At this point Ben answers my call. He informs me that the leasing office is actually on the second floor. t Once I reach the second floor Ben apologizes for the doorman. He informs me that they hire their doorman from a third-party company and that the doorman constantly change. He mentioned that the doorman was a new hire and he was not aware which floor the leasing office was on.... But wait! This gets better! Ben then proceeds to tap his watch three times and comments to me that he really does not have much time at this point to show me the units. He tells me that someone was scheduled for 12:30PM. However if we hurry, we can see a few units. (My appointment was at 12:00. Why would they schedule us 30 minutes apart??). I can continue to describe my horrible experience which I can assure gets worse. But how horrible my experience was to this point, I believe is enough to portray the building. I do want to mention the occurrence that wraps this all up well. As I was wrapping up my meeting with Ben he said that he would walk me down to the lobby. He mentions that perhaps the person who was scheduled for the 12:30PM appointment was waiting in the lobby. He shrugs his shoulder and says "Whatever, they are probably gone by now." (At this point it was just a bit past 1:00PM) The poor gentleman or lady who was scheduled for the 12:30PM meeting was completely disrespected and disregarded. I'm obsessed with this building and location! It's perfectly located just one block south of north and clybourn, which has every store you could possibly ever need within blocks. The Whole Foods alone is worth living here! They are continuing to develop the area, including building a movie theatre and even more shopping. As busy as the main intersection is, the building is located on a quiet street which has a great neighborhood bar with patio/roof seating across the street. The views of the city from these apartments are the best I have ever seen! The apartments have clean, contemporary lines and are spacious with high ceilings. The pool area looks like a mini resort with a large hot tub and lots of space for plenty of lay out/grill out room. This is the perfect place to invite a few friends/family over. The gym is not small, has new equipment, glass walls and faces the pool for a nice view while working out. The door staff are very friendly and always make me feel welcome! This really is a luxury place in the best location in town. There's a reason most people who live in Chicago have heard of Sono East apartments. It's the place to be! read more

Besides one minor communication issue with the management, I've had nothing but a wonderful experience at SoNo. The staff and tenants here have been awesome, which is refreshing since it seems like my friends that live in Chicago have nothing but horror stories when it comes to their apartments or landlords. The building itself is kept meticulously clean (which is hard to do when there's 100+ dogs living there, on top of several hundred people). The gym is good/adequate - quite nice for an apartment gym. I am always admittedly a little proud when I have friends visit and they comment on how awesome my place is. The rate I secured my unit for was comparable to similar units I looked at in West Loop. An especially enthusiastic shoutout goes to the doormen (Rico and Edmund are just generally awesome and helpful guys) and building engineers/maintenance staff. I told one of the maintenance guys my dog's name once, and a few weeks later when we walked by him, he remembered and addressed her by name! The residents are a generally pleasant group. If you have a dog, residents here are REALLY good with dogs. My pup is a rescue and can be quite skittish around strangers, but people have always been super sweet and understanding when she hides behind me in the elevator or bolts out when the doors open, ha ("...I promise it's not personal!") In general, I think what really sets this place apart is the doormen, the maintenance staff (and/or whoever does the cleaning, not sure if that's maintenance as well), and (if you have a dog) how dog-friendly the community is. read more

5 stars, 2 thumbs up, this place is legit. It's clean, great staff downstairs, great amenities, awesome location. The views are spectacular, the residents are friendly, and overall is a very solid building. I high recommend SoNo East to anybody looking to live in a quality building with some really nice amenities. I also would disregard the negative reviews that people are posting on here. Updating my review, as I would have to caution anyone from moving here. The management company Greystar is a bunch of greedy money grabbers, looking for ways to screw over residents. The property management team has an "I really don't care" type attitude, unless it is something that might inconvenience them, or force them to engage with their residents. I lived here for five years, and it was fantastic the first 2, but has consistently gone down hill from there with the management teams...they are too young and inexperienced to be able to professionally engage and deal with resident challenges or issues, so guess what? Bye, I moved... I paid my rent on time every month, never caused any issues in the building, and was probably one of the nicest, quiet, low maintenance residents they ever had. The doormen are still incredible and under appreciated, and the maintenance team is courteous and handles a immense workload well. My problem is what they do to you when you move out...charged me for floor damage when everyone in the building knows that the cheap floors and carpet they installed have to be replaced often, and in most units long before anyone moves out...the "hardwood" floors buckled with movement of the building settling, and the carpet is too cheap to withstand normal wear and tear. I was also told when I moved in, that every year I renewed my lease, they would come and shampoo the carpets, and clean the blinds...that never happened and now they charge me for floor damage. Lame. I know there was definitely wear and tear on the carpet, but I lived there for FIVE years... The best part here, is after receiving a bill on August 23rd, yes August 23rd, I start getting frequent calls from Greystar accounts receivable saying "my window" for payment is closing or it will go to collections...Now they choose to initiate frequent communication and intimidation only since I owe them money? Collections and it hasn't been 30 days? Get real....Laughable...and What a joke people. Way to be ridiculous right up til the end...and greedy... I'm updating this review to refute the property manager Brittany's attempt to silence my voice. I actually do not mind Brittany, but she needs a better team in my opinion and is doing her best to keep up with the more recent negative reviews. I will be adding photos of the Pool's Closed messages that gives a view of the fourth floor where the pool is housed... I do not have the wrong building, but this is a common tactic to have a negative review removed. read more

These apartments are awesome! It gives you the HighRise apartment w/ insane views surrounded by awesome shopping & dining options! The finishes in the apartment itself are top of the line! The door staff are always very nice & friendly! Makes it even more enjoyable to come home too! The amenities are great, especially the resort style pool! Lots of grills and seating, great if u want to have a few friends over! Sono is the place to be!!!! read more

This building is such a luxurious hidden gem! The views are spectacular and the inside of the units are pure condo quality! It's great to have buildings like this available for renters. The amenities in the building are also to die for! The pool deck is so nice! If you have a chance to rent one of the units with a terrace by the pool, please don't hesitate. These are hard to come by. If I had to recommend any building in the city, Sono East would be number one on my list for everyone!!!! read more

Absolutely horrible management team. Any good employee leaves quickly. Local management team ignores emails. When trying to escalate to corporate management (Greystar), they also ignore as well. Major AC issues in units. Their suggestion is to lower blinds. Even when blinds lowered, units will not cool below 73 in middle of summer. Amenities open weeks after neighboring buildings open and we are fed lies by management. Would never recommend moving into this building and would strongly discourage renting from any building managed by Greystar. Front door staff changes weekly. When talking to the good employees, they aren't happy either. read more

My daughter has lived in SonoEast for the past two years. She recently graduated from college and due to covid-19, she moved home in March. Her lease ends Septmeber 7th. We did not ask for any considerations or try to break the lease when she moved home. Prior to graduation, she had several excellent job offers, but the pandemic forced them on hold. She is currently unemployed and had to give up her apartment. She ask more than 30 days in advance that she be let out of her lease on August 31st and not be held accountable for the prorate of almost $500. My husband called the management office several days later and ask again. In both instances, they said no. We also sent a letter to the Greystar management office in Chicago requesting the same. I checked her account today and the prorate was deducted. In times of extreme financial hardship, I find this reprehensible ! My daughter moved out on the 31st and surrendered her keys, She left the apartment immaculate. In addition, the other reviews are right. The building has gone down hill recently and most of the staff are new. This is a disappointing finish for sure. I hope that she never lives in another Greystar property. read more

I actually enjoyed living here, for the most part. Comfortable, eco-friendly luxury: floor-to-ceiling windows, hardwood (laminate) floors, huge bathroom, thoughtful lighting, decent appliances. Very dog-friendly and hardly ever had an issue with noise from other units. They keep tenants updated on general going-ons via mass email. At times I found them informative, and at other times I felt I was being scolded for breaking the rules before I had even done anything wrong. Even though I paid an arm and a leg for garage parking, the location of this building started to become a drawback as the area developed. Just leaving the immediate vicinity of North and Clybourn by car during rush hour took too long (not the fault of Sono East by any means, but part of my decision to leave after a year). The main reason I left is because they were raising my rent by a few hundred dollars. It just didn't make sense. When I declined to resign a lease they called me to see if there was anything they could do. They wouldn't budge on the rent number. Moving in and out was another story. Like many apartment buildings in Chicago, they express super-strict rules on the times that you can use the loading dock and elevator to move, so that you don't run into the time slots of other tenants. I think that's fair. When I moved in, the guy at the front desk was trying to chase my movers out a full 30 minutes before my time slot was up so that we wouldn't run into the next people that were moving in. Ok. When I moved out, there was another tenant moving out during my time slot. Movers are pricey, so after giving them 30 minutes I went to the guy at the front desk to see if there was anything he could do to get the show on the road. He said that all I could do was wait for them to finish! So I had to ask them and get into an argument with them about it myself, cool. But the worst thing about Sono East came after I had moved out. It turns out that I owed them half a day of prorated rent or a repair of the carpet, or something like that-- anyways it was $75. BUT THEY NEVER NOTIFIED ME. This was the place that used my email address and phone number to constantly contact me about issues that were of concern to them like holiday pool hours or dogs in the amenity rooms, but I never received a single email or call about the $75. They claimed that they had contacted me, but when I asked them to provide history on that data, they said that they could not retrieve it because they had switched systems and didn't have the backlog. I had no idea that the charge existed until months later when I got a call from a collector. Sono East took no responsibility. The property management company is absolutely not service-oriented and their policies are pitted against you as the renter. read more

Management is sub par, they will take your money at all costs. If you want to overpay and deal with insane management, hop on board! Our story: My lease ends mid October. They are trying to make a 60 day move out mandatory and charge me 2-3x current rent, pro-rated rent from there on out. I didn't receive a call notifying me of the automatic renewal until yesterday (20 days before lease is up). Ironic. To date, we have paid over $35,000 in rent to Sono, and they won't budge on this 60 day notice situation. Now they are threatening to charge me a ridiculous amount of pro rated rent for 40 days since I didn't give them 60 day move out notice. Even if they find a tenant for 10/14 and have a smooth transition, they are threatening to charge me $8000/month pro rated for the 40 days we are over our original lease end date. Everytime I call them and try to talk logically, they say we signed a lease and are bound by it. I just love the bureaucracy and lack of logic. I ask to speak with a higher up in the Greystar company about this, and they won't put me in touch with anyone. As you can imagine, I am currently getting an attorney and seeing what they say. With that said, BE VERY CAREFUL WHAT YOU SIGN. Management is very happy to have you sign your life away and won't give anyone a break if Sono financially benefits from your loss. Reading reviews online, they have done this to a handful of people, so its obvious they don't care about bad reviews and unhappy customers as long as they're taking your money. If they can make something work with me on this, I will change my review to 5 stars. SONO - do the right thing here. I hope to change my review soon. read more

I stayed at the Sono East in a friends apartment for two weeks last summer. All I can say is WOW!! First off the building is brand new, modern, spotless, and felt very much like a posh hotel. Second, staff there is friendly and delivered great customer service my entire stay. Not only was everyone I encountered extremely professional and polite, they all seemed to actually enjoy their job (more than I can say for my condo's staff). When I arrived the door man quickly brought me a luggage cart for my bags and one of the employees (I think Vince) actually helped me load everything into my friends apartment, and then showed me around the building. Again this is NOT a hotel, this is an apartment building. Lastly the amenities were fantastic, gym and pool reminded me of South Beach. Would love to live here, can't wait to visit my friend again this summer!! read more

I scheduled a showing a recent weekend as I was pleased with amenities and pictures online. The leasing agent was not very professional nor knew how to really "sell."He had my phone and email for follow up which he said he would do. I have yet to receive any type of follow up. Sales 101: always follow up with your prospects! Definitely rethinking this building and property management. read more

When this building was new it was extremely nice but as the building is aging you can see that the materials used were extremely cheap. This building can be extremely loud as there are many dogs that bark and kids that run and play in the hallways with very thin walls. I lived in the building for over three years and every year the rent went up by $100! When I moved out management put fraudulent charges for me to pay. I would say that the building is in a great location but not really worth the money. Be careful moving into this building. read more

Beware, cheap, low-end finishes (e.g., their "wood" floors are laminate tiles) and appliances throughout, heat in unit is unbearable at 89 degrees (ac and heat are turned off /on depending on the date), construction noise across the street and in the building begins at 7 AM, very frequent staff turnover and great variation in professionalism and courtesy, water never gets cold is often cloudy (unnerving), walls are paper thin, etc., etc. I have a "newly rehabbed" unit too.Very high rent for low-end living. Be prepared to constantly feel you're being taken advantage of by SoNo/Greystar. They misrepresent building amenities before you rent. Appliances are cheap and quite literally, none work properly. Management is young and unexperienced, often punitive in tone, and condescending. They never reduce rent even during a month of sinks backing up with filthy water from units above, thus flooding the kitchen and then having loud fans for three days to prevent toxic mold. If you work from home expect explaining away the various noises inside the building and new construction across the street. They should teach classes on how to mismanage "luxury' properties. Experience living at SoNo East has been incredible so far. Have been living here for about 6 months and have been incredibly impressed with how responsive, caring and competent management has been compared to previous buildings. Any problems have been resolved quickly and effectively. Nothing but good things to say about this place and would recommend to anyone wanting to live in the area. read more

I can't say enough about the positive experience I have had moving to SoNo East! Yes the amenities and floor plans are amazing and top of the line but what is most important (at least to me) is the AMAZING staff! So welcoming and committed to making the daunting task of moving as easy as possible. Lauren was always there answering my continuous questions and concerns about floor plans and starting the process (among many other things) always there to help and truly great to work with. Phylicia is absolutely the best!!! You can definitely count on her to think of every little thing that goes into finally signing that dotted line! I can't say enough about how awesome and comforting and available they are! Everyone here is so welcoming and I truly feel like I found a great home and community.
