Hands down the best sushi spot in town. Growing up in the Middletown area for the past 30 years, my family and I have always ended up back at Sono. I've been coming here for nearly 20 years and still find it to be the best around. The fish is exceptionally fresh compared to many other sushi restaurants in the area. I've yet to have fishy tasting sashimi or sushi from this establishment. I used to occasionally order from Aki Sushi in Port Monmouth since they had super cheap prices but they've since raised their prices and it's not even worth it anymore. The service my family and I have received has always been phenomenal. The owner is is very kind and an absolute delight to speak with. We were always gifted a free tofu dish or edamame as an appetizer when we were regulars. I just always enjoyed the atmosphere of the restaurant. The owner speaks both English and Mandarin and also can also understand Cantonese. Most of the waitresses are trilingual and always accommodated to my grandmother who didn't speak English. I just ordered takeout and received my order in a timely manner in which my order was ready just at the turning point of the estimated time I was given on the telephone. I highly recommend giving Sono a try and will continue going there myself. read more

The server ran outside after us. We originally thought we didn't leave enough on the bill which I will always come in and fix, come to find out she was just unhappy with her tip. Which I did do the math wrong and left less than I usually would, but you don't run after customers when there is no financial reason to on the business. Your tip isn't worth loosing customers over. Very unprofessional. I wish I got her name to leave that behind but she didn't introduce her self. The manager kept yelling to the kitchen across the restaurant over customers. Not a good atmosphere to dine in. So now the issues with the food: The miso soup was defiantly instant packet that you just add water too. Hand roll she gave us was okay to say the best. Pretty sure it was the wrong one but I'm not one to return items. I have worked in the restaurant industry a long time and wouldn't post this unless it were warranted can deffinatly say we won't be coming back. Have to give some love to my favorite sushi spot. Me and my boyfriend come here atleast once a week and the sushi is always absolutely delicious, even during the pandemic. I have gone to a lot of sushi places for takeout during corona and this is the only one that has stayed true to their high standard of their food quality. I come here all the time and the food is amazing. However, tonight we had tuna tataki, which I get all the time and it tasted off and kinda warm. When I sent it back the owner asked me what was wrong and I told her. She immediately said I tried it and it wasn't warm or fishy and my husband is going to try it too. I also approached her afterwards with the husband there and said "listen I really like your food but it was off" the husband was really cool but the wife had a huge attitude and wouldn't even look me in the eye. Held off long enough from trying this place and I was so wrong to avoid it! Everything is fresh, and they come up with some delicious combinations of flavors. Never much of a wait for the food, but then again I've only been here for lunch because I hear the dinner wait is insane. Sono has become our go-to sushi spot. They have the best, tastiest sushi we've found so far in the area (within a 20-minute driving distance). They have interesting rolls, the service is good, the quality of the food is high, and they have a bona fide sushi bar to sit at if you prefer to do so. We never have a problem getting seated as a party of 2, although Sono does get pretty full. Yes, the strip-mall setting is kind of a bummer, but we're in Jersey --- strip malls are mandatory, not optional. BYO, and/but there is a liquor store in the same strip mall. Ordered takeout from here after reading the good yelp reviews and wanting to give this place a shot. Overall the food wasn't bad. I thought the coloring of the fish was off, and some of the rolls needed sauce, however it wasn't terrible. Is this my favorite place in Monmouth County... Sono has the best sushi around. They offer a huge variety of different sushi including many different shell fish sushi. The incrdible roll and phoenix roll are among my favorites. Sono used to be our #1 sushi house but have since found another local place we feel consistently better and more to our taste. After eating at sushi houses like Morimoto it becomes hard to find a "great" sushi eatery locally yet we are fairly easy to please if the basics are met. My lady and I love sushi and eat it regularly. We've been to some of the best and unfortunately some of the worst. Sono is perfectly fine, we can recommend it tho I will absolutely say there have been times we were served sushi/sashimi that could have been a "tad" fresher...and to us thats the #1 concern at any sushi eatery. That being said, again we are probably more concerned than most about this and I certainly could never say Sono was ever bad...just a tad inconsistent at times. The cooked entrees are good but IMO not memorable altho the "seafood Dynamite" appetizer is a must try if you are adventurous. Its very, very tasty yet "heavy" so prepare. Overall, Sono is a thumbs up from us but again we moved on to another sushi house for what we feel provides more consistency, simplicity and purity in its Japanese cuisine. love this spot. cute interior very basic wood furniture and no nonsense setup. tables give enough room to spread out and the place was clean. we got 2 sushi/sashimi meals for 2 as there were 4 of us, and 2 appetizers. the soup was bland, interesting to include crab stick in the clear soup. beef sashimi was PHENOMENAL. loved the sauce and it was a good size. tempura was typical. the fish was super fresh. the rolls were put together nicely and we were full at the end. also big plus was the service! friendly waitresses and always refilled the waters! warmed the sake for us and provided appropriate stemware for our wine. Pretty great sushi. The M 16 roll is definitely worth it as well as the hot crab roll. All the seafood had that fresh taste which made the sushi experience even better. Best sushi around. I give in on this one. I really like the place. The sushi is fresh and the people who work there are always pleasant and helpful. I go here for lunch a couple times a month. Last Saturday I had the pleasure of taking my 17 yo daughter and her friend to a Wiz Khalifa and Fall Out Boy concert at the Arts Center. (another story for another forum) I learned I had never taken my daughter to sushi. Problem solved. I ordered the sushi dinner for 3 and added some additional rolls. As usual, everything was fantastic. It was a lot of food and I am happy to say, my daughter ate everything, enjoyed it although I didn't exactly tell her what everything was before she ate it.
