Sonoma Paint Center in Santa Rosa is one of a number of Benjamin Moore Paint dealers in Sonoma County. I have used Benjamin Moore interior and exterior paints and products for decades. Their Aura line of paint is simply The Best, bar none. I have previously bought Benjamin Moore paint in quantity from both Sandy's Paint in Sebastopol and Hawley's Paint Store in Santa Rosa. Both stores have treated me well and offered me (when I asked) painter's discounts in the past. I also experimented with Kelly-Moore interior paints and Dunn Edwards interior/exterior paints as well. Let's just say that nothing comes close to the results that I've experienced with Aura from Benjamin Moore. It wasn't until almost four years ago when I began a house remodel, total restoration, and re-paint of my entire house and fencing, that my painter recommended Sonoma Paint Center in Santa Rosa. I was pleased with the "color design" area in the corner of the building, overall variety of products, and store itself. I have been treated well by David, Lee, and other staff who work there. What sets this store, Sonoma Paint Center, apart from all others that I have encountered is the actions of its owner, John Barnes. When the exterior of my home was painted over three years ago, I paid for a couple dozen gallons of exterior Aura low-lustre that my painter picked up for me. I had asked for a standard pre-mixed color simply labeled "White 01". Sonoma Paint Center was out of that pre-mixed paint that day, so they supplied us instead with the "Base" paint. This is a white color with NO added pigment/binders so it is not technically the "White 01" color. My whole house was painted with this other white color. It didn't look bad . . . in fact it was pretty nice. The problems started about two years later when I noticed unexpected sun damage and fading. I mentioned this to John Barnes relatively recently and he was not surprised when I pointed out it was with paint that did not have the pigment, binder, and additives mixed into the base paint. In fact, John remembered clearly the day that one of his employees had sold that large quantity of paint to my painter and scolded him for selling "base-only" paint! He told all his employees that when a pre-mixed color is not in stock, they could simply "make some" by adding the formula to the base. I guess that employee wasn't thinking that day. So, fast forward to recently, when I came in for other paint and telling John my story . . . he made this offer to me: He asked how many gallons I needed for a re-paint. I told him and he said to me that he would only charge me for half of them. On top of that, the ones he would charge me for he would give me the contractor's discount too! I was floored by his generosity. I took John up on his offer quite happily. I also took the opportunity to make some slight adjustments in my color selection and changed from low-lustre to all semi-gloss. I am still painting my house, but the parts that are complete with the new paint are just beautiful! I could not be any happier with the results. I asked John why he was being THAT generous with me, he replied, "because it's the right thing to do." There are good people in the world . . . they are all around us. All you need to do is open your heart and they will appear right in front of you. Thank you, Sonoma Paint Center . . . Thank you, John Barnes! You have a customer for life. Review 0086

Unfortunately, our recent experience at Sonoma Paint is requiring us to write a very poor review for this store. On Sep 7, we bought a gallon of paint to redo a kid room. We were recommended the Aura product line and have used this nice premium product before so went with it ($90 for a gallon). The next day, we started the project working the edges of the room and around outlets and then rolled the larger parts of the flat walls. When done, we noticed that the edging was a darker color then the rolled parts. Thinking it may be that paint was wet, we let the paint dry overnight and then tried to refinish the darker edges. This time the paint was lighter. OMG I have three different colors on one wall from the same gallon of paint. Worried and frustrated we called the store to discuss bc there was something off about the paint. Spoke to James and told him about the color differences, told him that it is not old paint and purchased two days prior and that perhaps the paint was not mixed properly bc of the slight separation of paint in the can even after hand mixing and differences in color after drying. We took pics and told James that we can bring in the remaining paint since he wanted to check the paint himself. Well that was a waste of time to drive back to the store. He did some small swatch tests and said everything looked fine to him despite the pics of the room wall. He could not help and recommended to paint another coat and "see" what happens. This is not a cheap paint and we're not buying another $90 gallon. It is a Benjamin Moore premium paint that should only require one coat on a white wall. At a minimum he could have offered to remix the paint or even offer more paint under their basic product line so we can do another coat. Am not a happy customer about this and will not be patronizing this store anymore unfortunately.
