Went to Sonora Grill for a dinner. Food was ok; chips & salsa was good (as they give you 6 different types of salsas), steak was good, but is on a plate of salt which made it really salty by the time we finished it. The sides I cannot say if they were good, as I became really sick during dinner because of it. The cherry on top was the waiter asking for a larger tip. We gave 15% as we thought that was efficient for the fact that I was only able to eat the steak - everything else was inedible. Apparently they think 22-25% tip is normal on a $2,600 MX bill for a meal that was just mediocre. read more

Regardless of how good the food is, they are blasting "popular" music for no reason at all. Could not hear the waiters . After saying "what" about 10 times, I got the waiter to ask the manager to turn down the music. The music then slowly increased in volume, and I have just requested for them to turn it down again! read more

Ordered delivery on Ubereats. It was relatively quick and we got a fun surprise when the food arrived. They added 2 ice cold beers as a free gift! We already got a dessert for free because they had some promotion going on and we spent enough to qualify - but we were not expecting the beers, that was really cool of them! It was well packaged and the food was fresh & hot. We got the hamburguesa Sánchez, Papas Trufadas a la Francesa (incredible!) and arrachera tacos. Everything was delicious and I'd recommend them all, but those fries and the tortilla chips were my favorite. Definitely would order from them again. read more

My wife and I stopped in here late on Friday night 12/28 and there was nobody really in the restaurant and a lot of people standing around. We thought "Hey, let's grab a drink." Like with so many restaurants down here in Playa, they really don't have much business sense when it comes to just letting people come in for a drink. They basically said that unless we sat down at a table and ordered food, we couldn't order a drink. Uh, ok....just turn down money when there are more servers than diners and you are open. That said, we sat down and ended up having a nice late meal. We ordered a bottle of their Chardonnay/Chenin Blanc which was quite good and they kept it chilled nicely next to the table in a stand-alone bucket with ice. We ordered one Chicharron de Pulpo which was excellent, 2 Tacos Arabe and my wife also had one of their signature drinks. The presentation was excellent and the food quite good. We would recommend it off of those things. The staff, once they have you in there are quite accomodating as well. read more

Sonora Grill was in such a convenient location, right along Quinta Avenida and was just what me and my friend's needed after walking around. The ambiance was excellent and just what we needed. I highly recommend the Queso Fundito! It was my favorite. The restaurant also brings out a whole bunch of sauces and salsa and each one was fantastic. Excellent food with unique flavors. The food had a great infusion of Italian and Mexican flavors. The service was excellent as well. We felt like high-end dinners. There was no need to look for a writer. They practically never left the table. The abeyance was stunning. We went in for a regular dinner, but a great place for celebrations intimate dinner, and family dinner. The menu selection was great and not overwhelming. This place was very lively with loud music and so much energy from the staff. They were playing fun music videos on all the screens. Food and drinks were amazing. A very disappointing dinner experience: - super duper cocktails in very elaborate mugs were completely unimpressive and pretty flat - the octopus was overcooked, it was hard to cut it even with the steak knife - the cauliflower dish was interesting and not bad, but the main ingredient was undercooked. A friend and I came to Playa Del Carmen as our first trip away after we'd both been vaccinated for COVID-19. While we stayed at an all inclusive, we wanted to explore at night and get dinners in town. We happened upon Sonora and were immediately drawn in by the ambience. They have taken many precautions to keep their staff and patrons safe amidst the pandemic - requiring temperature checks, masks when not seated, and require similar things from staff. The food was great. The meal started with chips, a variety of salsas and the most delicious bean dip. My friend opted for tacos and I went for the catch of the day - red snapper. While this is a restaurant known for their meat, my fish was fantastic. It was cooked well, the sauce felt inventive and like nothing I'd tasted before. We both opted for wine, but, after seeing the ADORABLE bar cart that they roll around and make cocktails table side with, I personally regretted not getting one. While we dined, an incredible DJ played original mixes and TVs showed his original visuals - he had us dancing in our seats. The most delightful part of the restaurant though? The staff. From the cooks (which he could wave to from our outdoor seats), to the waiters, to the bussers, to the manager - everyone was so incredibly attentive. I actually said to my friend "the staff seems to really love working here." And as someone that knows how crappy you can be treated in the service industry, that was encouraging. Couldn't recommend this restaurant more! read more

This is a nice restaurant to come to, definitely one of the more upscale ones. We all had steaks (of course) and I can honestly say these are some of the best steaks I've ever had. They were all very juicy, fresh, and cooked very well. We requested sauces like gravy and chimichurri that were all really good as well! Our drinks were good, strong and tasty. Service was ok, not the best not the worst. We did feel a little rushed towards the end even though they weren't closing and there were other empty tables, maybe it's the culture? Christian was our waiter and he made sure we were well taken care of, even gave us a brief explanation of the Mexican culture, Mayan and what are the best peppers we can find in mexico. We ordered fried octopus, the Japanese cut Rib eye Akaushi and it came on a salt stone and it was SUPERB and very tasty!!!!! The drinks are excellent and we had the second one on the house, and an ice cream as well. I realize that ribeye steaks have a little fat on them, but my dinner last night at Sonora Grill was a bit ridiculous. We ordered the small rib eye steak and over a third of it was fat. We complained and they offered us a round of drinks, but when the bill came, they had charged us for the drinks as well. Add to that the fact that they were cleaning our table with smelly cleaner solution while we were eating and we can say for sure that we won't be back. It's a beautiful restaurant, but they really mishandled this situation as they were very shortsighted. read more

Sad to have a business running like this, my husband asked if he can move to a table were he could charged his laptop and continue working while we were doing tourist things; this guy said no, I mean a little of common sense. Overpriced steakhouse, I love their food and locations in Mexico City, Puerto Vallarta and Guadalajara, but this one in particular is not worth it! Waitress don't know a lot about the menu, food was good but we paid almost more than the US. Save your money and go somewhere you get a great customer service that you deserve. read more

We were seated and it took over 30 min for someone to actually take our order, once we started ordering they didn't have half the things on the menu, especially the steaks. This is in what used to be El Rancho Nueva at 747 and Union Center Blvd. They've redesigned the interior so it's a little more open and up to date. The food is very good with a varied menu including steaks and seafood. My wife and I have been there twice, once by ourselves and once with another couple. When we were with the other couple, they added a 15% service charge to the check, so that became the tip for the server. It wasn't a suggested tip like you see some places do at various percents. It was included in the total. I wonder how many people don't notice? I took a star away for that. read more

I had a super bad experience at this particular location, I went to celebrate my niece wedding anniversary and after we order meat and other entrée after we ate the entree and just a piece of our meat , they brought us a piece of cake with a candle and took our meat from our table which we only ate a little piece inside , I told them I want take it home since we were full we want to take it home . I totally thought they were going to bring it back in a box or something, after a paid 200$ dollars with gratuity and everything I was waiting and waiting and they never come back with my meat , so I asked them and they told me they throw it in the garbage !!! I got super mad and I told them ok bring back at least I'll give it to the dog in the street, they give me all kind of excuses and never give me my meat to go !!! I ask them for the manager name and number after I got yo the hotel the name wasn't even clear to read , really I felt like they took advantage of me and scam by this employees , really bad experience I hope I never go back to plata del Carmen again it's the worse place in Cancun !!! This place needs more hype! They have such amazing sauces to start off the courses, Our favorite was the 3 chili red sauce! The steak was cooked to perfection on a salt block giving it that extra spark of flavor.Vegetables were sautéed and flavored beautifully. I had their piña colada and it was so sweet and yummy. honestly overall everything was just perfect. We loved this spot! We came here with a group of about 8 people at the end of May. The restaurant decor and layout is really neat, loved the music and atmosphere, service was fantastic, and the food/drinks were outstanding. When you arrive, they bring over a cocktail cart where their in-house mixologist creates your cocktail tableside. Their wine options were great too. My boyfriend and I ordered the Rib Tacos, Ribeye/Bone Marrow Tacos, and the Mandarin Salad. The salad could have used a bit more dressing, but the ingredients in the salad were refreshing. We probably didn't need the Rib Tacos, but they were super good. The reason we loved this restaurant so much was because of the Ribeye/Bone Marrow tacos. Hands-down the best place I tried in Playa Del Carmen. Sonora Grill was definitely an amazing experience and I would always recommend this place to anyone I know visiting Playa Del Carmen. From the moment we walked in the hostess was very friendly and I speak very highly l of the hospitality, Miguel and his assistant and the rest of the team were very attentive and super kind to us throughout the entire night, they explained the dishes and the drinks and make sure we are up to speed with every little detail you can think of. I really agree the food was delicious and the shrimp dish that we had was the best shrimp I ever had, beside the tacos and sauces the cocktails or pretty unique in how they looked and how they tasted. Will definitely come again and speak highly of this establishment because of the food and more importantly because of how attentive their stuff is. After a month in Playa, we wanted to end our trip with a special dinner. This was hands down the worst dining experience we had all month. The staff was friendly enough but the service was incredibly slow, even though they weren't very busy. For our whole dinner we're only got one drink served because it took that long to get a cocktail. We're talking 20-30 minutes. That's ridiculous. I had to ask for the check multiple times. The manager came over and didn't even apologize- like what are you good for?! They just let us sit there with our meal complete. They also tried to bring out drink out after we had already asked for the bill! Sad because our experience at Harry's and Illios was far better. read more

At the risk of losing my ex-pat hipster credentials and break the omnipresent "ex-pats rule" of always exclusively eating at small, quaint, local and "off-5th" restaurants, I'm going to take this moment to sing the praises of the incredible Sonora Grill on 5th and Calle 30. Ok, so up front, yes, it's obviously touristy (promise I did not wear a PDC t-shirt!), usually way too loud (why, I have no idea, it's not a freakin disco) and definitely expensive (what can I say?). However, the few times I've dined there, it has been exceptional in all aspects-great service, interesting choices, proper cocktails and delicious food. The first visit was just a drop in by my iconoclastic spouse and me on our walk home after listening to live music one night. Our order was simply a couple of vodka martinis with a twist and some chips with several unique and interesting salsas / dips. I was immediately impressed with the pro service and great drinks. This bartender knows his stuff. Noted. Next time I was craving some more martinis plus burnt cow of the highest quality and dropped in again with the ultra-wifey in tow. After indulging on their customary and delightful refried bean-cheesy dip and fresh chips, she requested shrimp ceviche with an Alberino and I ordered a Rib Eye steak with house Mexican cab. While I greatly enjoyed a salty-buttery super tender slice of beef, my super-chick loved her ceviche equally. The wines were astonishingly good and the service was tremendously attentive and helpful. Was the music still way too loud -yes. Did I care-no. Great and memorable meal. Its not an everyday spot, but, well, hey don't you deserve it sometimes? I know I do. Cheers! read more

The stairs were sketchy walking up, but service rivals many full-service, five star restaurants around the world. The servers are attentive, friendly, and will literally cater to your every need.
