I'm a big fan of pasties. Originating in Cornwall, England these handheld meat pies are meant to be a meal enrobed in dough. Sonsons owner and her mom lived in Cornwall, perfecting their recipe for their products. You can tell you're getting the real deal here. This location on Brown is in a very nondescript spot. They don't have a large variety of choices like the "famous" pasty restaurant in town - they offer about ten here while the famous place has more than four times as many. Please note that Sonsons are about half the price though which certainly pleases me. I've bought pasties like the Cornish Cheezy (ground beef, sausage, cheese, garlic herb sauce), the Steak + Cheese (steak, cheese, potato, rutabaga, onion), or the Chicken Green Chili (chicken, potato, cheese, green chili.) All have been excellent but my favorite of all is the Cornish Cheezy. I highly recommend throwing in some extra gravy for either .50 or $1. We take ours home and bake them for dinner. You can also buy them frozen. The other option is to eat there at one of the small tables they have but honestly, it's not really a restaurant vibe here. Get yourself out of cooking tonight and bring home some pasties. read more

As an upper Michigan girl who grew up on pasties and only eat it once a year when I visit home, I was very excited to finally try Sonsons! Lots of parking and I was greeted right away by Diane when I walked in. She was really nice and answered any questions I had. The place isn't big but it isn't tiny, I think there were about 3 or 4 tables. The decor was cute and clean, gave out those British Cornish pasty vibes. Good variety of pasties on their menu and they also offer frozen and gluten free pasties. I ordered the traditional steak and cheesy wheezy. Diane asked if I wanted them warmed up, even though I was taking it to go, yes I do! 25 min later they were still warm when I got home! Yay! The pasties come with a delicious gravy but I grew up eating them with ketchup. The pasties had a good amount of tasty filling and the crust is more on the flaky thin side. I enjoyed both though the cheesy wheezy is supposed to have two kinds of cheese in it but I didn't taste or see any? My cousin suggested we visit her as our Nanny was born and raised in England. She always loved a good pasty, and we wanted to honour her memory with a pasty! As she would say, "Be rude not to." Upon entering we were greeted immediately and noticed it was an order at front then seat yourself kind of location. Not my favorite, but also reminded me of some of the small shops we visited in England. For vegetarians/vegans, you will want to call ahead. I didn't realize and only had one option, which was full of onions which I don't tolerate well. Either way, it was a decent pasty though the crust was a little dry. My cousin said her's was good, but nothing crazy. We may be a bit biased of the nostalgia of having with our Nan but it's a great local place! read more

Took me a while but I finally made it up here. I have been wanting to pop in for awhile, but usually don't get up this way. Today, the weather was nice, I got the day off and my need for a sausage roll was immense. When you get there you will notice a little garden with some tables so you can sit outside. Inside you will find a nice little dining area and a kitchen area that you can watch. I got the cottage pie and a couple of sausage rolls. First up....sausage rolls. I love sausage rolls. I have missed sausage rolls. These were proper sausage rolls. And you can get a 10 pack frozen to take home. The pastry was flakey and buttery. The sausage was breakfast sausage, a little different than I have had, but tasty. Now on to the pie. It was perfectly cooked and stuffed full. The gravy was so good with it. Ground beef, peas, mash and onions. Sooo good! I had to sit and contemplate if I had room for another ( I'm looking at you beef and onions). Cooler heads prevailed and I stopped at 1. I was excited to try Sonsons Pasty Company as the pasty is close to my heart. Had to stop in with Diele K to honor our heritage. Upon approaching the location, there is a nice, large patio out front. When we entered the building, we were greeted. The menu is on display and you place your order at the front and pay. Once the order is complete, you can walk up and grab it from the employee at the front. This is a very casual dining experience. The walls of the location is decorated with lots of fun things to look at. I enjoy the type of decor as it reminds of my Nanny's house growing up. The menu has a variety of filling options and the option for vegetarian if you order ahead. They also offer take and bake. I ordered the cottage pie pasty ($10). The pasty is served on disposable plate with disposable silverware. It was good but not my favorite. The crust was a little dry and the gravy was very loose. If I returned, I would try a pasty with a different filling. I think it was worth the stop in, but I would not go out of my way to come back. read more

Sonsons is a small pasty shop tucked in the corner of a shopping complex, you probably wouldn't notice it from the street. It had a lovely little makeshift patio set up outside and inside a cozy dining area and counter to order. The family each picked a pasty to go as well as a freezer pack for lunches. I had the steak special for August. It didn't have a ton of steak, but between the vegetables, crust, and gravy, I was satisfied. My daughter got a cottage pie, which was stuffed with ground beef, potatoes, and mixed vegetables. We're looking forward to going back for more. read more

Sonson's has been on my radar for a while. This is a small little cafe that specializes in Cornish Pasties. As a mater of fact that's about all they do. Pronounced (pass-tee), a pasty is a small baked pie resembling a calzone. Traditionally they were made by the wives of Cornish miners for their lunch. With a few small tables inside, and a couple outside Sonsons is geared for take out. With about a dozen different pasties to choose from I wanted the traditional pasty. This is a pie pastry filled with steak, potatoes, onions, and rutabaga, baked to golden brown perfection, served with brown gravy. I have only had a pasty in upper Michigan and parts of Wisconsin that have a history of mining. The pasties here are the real deal. Unfortunately the traditional pastys were sold out, but there were a few left in the warmer. Rather than waiting 35 minutes for a fresh traditional, I chose the ground beef pasty with the difference being it is made with ground beef instead of steak. This pasty did not disappoint. It was just like the ones I've experienced in the midwest. I can now get an authentic pasty in my own neighborhood. Updating my review after trying Sonson's again about 10 days ago. I ordered via DoorDash for lunch. I picked two pasties, one chicken pot pie and one steak. Both arrived nice and warm with a warm gravy on the side to go with them. They were delicious (steak just a tad bit on the saltier side for my preference) and they were big enough that I ate only a half each and saved the rest for later. Prices are good for what you get. Will be retuning more frequently for sure. We love delicious options that are close to our home! read more

I love the pasties from Sonson's more widespread competitor, and these pasties seemed to have more of a traditional flair to them so when I was in the area I figured let's try them out for lunch! Unfortunately, unless you have around 30 minutes to 1 hour+ to spare for lunch you're SOL for a quick meal. I called to place a to go order and most of their pasties at noon were either premade and cold or frozen. Some of the meaty ones I wanted would take 30 minutes to cook in their oven and the frozen veggie medley would take an hour because it was frozen. Hmmmm well I'll just take them home and heat them up myself then. They did have some pasties in the oven baking but those would be 20 minutes, still a bit too long for me to wait at the moment. The shop is in a not-too-busy strip mall area and occupies a corner spot away from the main street. They've converted part of their parking spaces to an outdoor patio so when it gets cooler or in the morning/evening dining al fresco might be a nice option. The shop inside is a bit small and most of the space is devoted to the kitchen and pasty storage. For your reference, the cold pasties bake at 350 F for 30 minutes. As for the frozen pasties, the instructions are as follows (From their website): - Remove wrapping. - Preheat oven to 450℉. - Place frozen pasty on a baking sheet lined with parchment paper. - Bake at 450℉ for 15 minutes, then turn down to 350℉ and bake for 45 minutes. - Remove from oven. The pasty is hot, so let it sit for five minutes. We know this is the hardest step, but it is worth the wait. There was a container of gravy included with each pasty but those were frozen solid which made thawing them out a bit of an interesting challenge. I got the traditional steak, green chile chicken, and vegetable medley. I asked the toddler when we got home, do you want steak or chicken? My budding food critic answered promptly "'TAYK!" But then she had a tired toddler tantrum so off she went in her bed for a nap. Don't worry I saved her half for when she woke up! The steak pasty was done just as expected in 30 minutes according to the instructions. The exterior was nice n flaky, with a super buttery flavor. The steak was tender and the potato+ rutabaga was shredded. It was full flavored with salt and pepper but on the verge of being too salty for me but I'm more salt sensitive than other people. The gravy went well with the pasty. I really enjoyed the green chile chicken pasty. The flavors were spot on and it was just the right amount of spiciness for me. I'd get this again! I haven't tried the veggie medley yet. It's still nestled in my freezer but I look forward to heating it up next time I'm in a pasty kind of mood! read more

This are some tasty treats not too big but tasty we have tried a few chicken pot pie and the steak with gravy on side delicious just wish a little more size vs cost but we do recommend if you haven't tried it give it a go like an empanadas filled with meats and gravy how could you go wrong read more

They make 'em decent here, but they're absolutely nowhere near as good as Cornish Pasty, and I wouldn't trust anyone who says otherwise. One thing I noticed is that here, they are more bread and less filling, which I wasn't a fan of. My husband and I got the walnut lentil, the medley, the steak, the chicken cheesy, and the chicken and mushroom. They're just okay, and unfortunately they mainly tasted dry. The best one out of them was the chicken cheesy, as it had some texture and flavor. The others were nothing special. I think that if you want pastys, just drive a few more minutes and get yourself Cornish Pasty. read more

I love a good pasty!!! We aren't usually in this neighborhood and when we saw the sign we had to check it out. I'm sorry I didn't catch the name of the lady in the shop, but she was a hoot! The interior is small and quaint - just a few tables. But a nice big patio area out front with tables. I would recommend calling fist - they only have a limited number of pasties that are hot and ready to eat onsite. Sausage rolls are made fresh and take about 20 minutes. Order at the counter. We shared a Steak and Cheese pasty and a Chicken Pot Pie Pasty. She split it for us and recommended the gravy which was a great tip!!! Very filling and the steak was our favorite. We ordered 2 sausage rolls to go (they were very good!!). We also took 4 frozen pasties to bake at home later. They have freshly baked desserts - we will have to try them another time. I had a similar experience to Gary T.'s. I placed a medium size to go order on the website on Monday. Paid in advance. Drove 30 miles to pick it up. When I arrived at the store, signs on the door said it was closed Monday's and Tuesdays! Why not say that on your website? Why take my order and accept payment when you are not open? My husband stopped by for a bite and he picked us up two for dinner!! My favorite dinner (one I don't have to cook) you can stop by for fresh hot food or you can pick up their take and bake. They come frozen so you can pick up a few! We popped them in the oven for and they came out so golden and flaky! He got the steak and potato and I prefer meatless so he picked me up potato and onion! It was so flavorful and the filling was so good! They heat up beautifully and it makes a great dinner! Where have I been all my life that I had never tried a pasty?! I'm so glad to have found this hidden gem because now I can't get enough of it! I have been here several times now even though it's quite the drive. As soon as you open the door though, ahhh it's heaven. It's smells soooo good. The owner is so friendly and the inside is always clean. She has a few tables inside and the decor is really cute. My sister always goes with me and so we've gotten to try a few different pasties. Our favorites though have got to be the green chili chicken, the steak and cheese, and the vegetable chicken. Yummy! It's definitely worth the drive and we will keep coming for more! Always looking for a new place to eat we found this place on Local Flavor and headed out to Mesa to try the pasty's. This little shop is located in a strip mall by a gym.. pretty easy to find. Plenty of parking and a small dining area inside. I asked what the favorites were and went with the green chili chicken .. I added the gravy because I love brown gravy.. the crust was flaky and delicious.. the filling was hot and full of flavor, big chunks of chicken .. it was delicious. The bf had the steak and cheese (another favorite).. with gravy he thought it tasted like Sunday beef stew dinner .. it was also delicious.. chunks of beef, potatoes, rutabaga & gravy (yummy!). These are filling, big enough to share or as a meal. We had the cherry and apple turnovers also.. the crust was good on both but the cherry one could've used more filling, the apple one was full of apple filling.. both were delicious.. great flavor, great crust. I know there is a little bit of debate about Sonsons, but as someone who is from London, I really enjoy their pasties. Their Cornish cheesy is fantastic, as well as their cottage pie. I do think there is room for improvement when it comes to the personal interaction with customers. I tried to discuss how I am from England and I was so excited to have a pasty that I didn't have to drive very far to get, I was responded to with a light laugh and expectation to continue my order. Wow, just wow. Found this place by my mom's new hood and thought what? Pasties in Arizona? and made by someone who grew up in Cornwall, England? I knew I had to try them. I got the green chili chicken pasty as a take-and-bake. It took 30 minutes to cook. All the positive reviews are 100% correct - these are amazing. The crust is thin and flaky. The inner contents were a delicious blend of chicken, green chilis and potatoes. Being more of a hot sauce type of gal, I thought I might forgo the gravy and grab some Cholula, but the gravy was a perfect complement and I ate it instead. You could probably split one with someone if you don't have a huge appetite, which is what I thought I'd do but ended up eating almost all of it myself - I remembered to take a photo only after I couldn't stuff in another bite.
