I have frequented this restaurant over the years and they have yet to disappoint. On this visit I ordered pork pot stickers, Kung pao chicken, and brown rice. Pot stickers were amply stuffed with meat which was really nice since some restaurants skimp on this. The Kung pao was good. I like mine a little spicier but it was fine. They chili sauce they have is the bomb so I added some. The dish also had way too many peanuts but otherwise it was fine. The young woman working the counter was friendly and efficient. We ordered chow mein with chicken chow mein with shrimp and Mongolian beef. I had some of the chow mein chicken, and it was good, but not very warm. I would not recommend the Mongolian beef, since it was very salty. It would've been nice if the chow mein, shrimp and chow mein chicken or heat it up to a warmer level. We had Xiaolongbao (soup dumplings), surprisingly good with the side vinegar sauce. 9/10 West lake soup was also good for a chilly day. 7.5/10 The only qualm is the szechuan boiled fish. I am chinese so I spoke to the chinese lead, and asked for something they do well/special, and he recommended the szechuan boiled fish. We're big spicy szechuan food lovers, we went for it since it's off the menu. It was $25 for the fish dish, subpar flavor, and maybe 10 pieces of small white fish which was disappointing. 5/10 *edit: They also charge $6 for two persons worth of rice. It was a lot of rice that we didn't finish but it's a pet peeve for Asian restaurant to charge for rice after ordering a main dish. The chefs are Northern and Southern, so focus on ordering those cuisine style rather than szechuan or others. read more

I am from San Francisco but was skeptical about the food although it had great reviews We ordered: - Family style tofu which had deep fried tofu with napa cabbage carrots and broccoli. - Deep fried ginger chicken. We came to the wine country from San Francisco and began craving Chinese food. After searching reviews for the best Chinese in Napa County, and fully expecting it to be in the town of Napa, we found Soo Yuan in Calistoga. The owner and server "Carol" was friendly from the start and sat us down with some hot tea to start off. We ordered 3 dishes, fried rice, chow mein and garlic broccoli. Coming from San Francisco, we think we know something about good Chinese food so when I tell you it was very good, I really mean it. We are near vegan vegetarians and don't eat egg-- Carol was happy to replace the egg with tofu and add it where it didn't exist. After being in Napa a few days already, we really craved protein and veggies. Soo Yuan didn't disappoint. Carol's family also prepare their own kind of seitan/faux chicken which she told us about after we had already ordered and eaten. After explaining to her our feeling of being deprived of ample veggies and protein, she couldn't wait to expose us to her family's secret recipe for their own homemade setian chicken. She had the cook whip some up just so we could try it and wow, it really was excellent! I strongly recommend Soo Yuan if you are up there in deep Napa. For us, it was an oasis.
