Yesterday my niece, my 3 1/2‑year‑old son, and I came here to celebrate my niece's birthday and enjoy the outdoor patio. Instead, our experience was ruined by the owner, Gordon Langstaff, and his completely inappropriate behavior around a small child. My son, who is three and on the autism spectrum, briefly picked up a loose electrical cord that was lying on the ground under the patio stairs (I have a photo of how exposed it was). Instead of calmly addressing the situation, Gordon walked over in a rude, irritated tone and said, "Can you do something?" I told him I was already handling it and redirecting my son, but as he walked away he started cursing under his breath, using foul language that was clearly audible right next to my child. There is no excuse for swearing like that in front of a three‑year‑old, especially when the unsafe cord was left out in the open by the restaurant in the first place. Whether or not my son is autistic, families should never be subjected to hostility and foul language from the owner of a restaurant. If you offer outdoor seating and leave cords and other hazards accessible, you should expect children to be curious and respond with basic courtesy, not anger. Came here per a recommendation from a friend. Tried the curry basil red snapper which was quite fishy and the fish tasted old. Also didn't like that it had tons of cabbage and not much fish. By contrast the gratium was simple with chicken, garlic, tomatoes and parsley but had a lot of meat with great flavor. We got mild spice but added extra spice which was great! Delicious food with an awesome selection of cocktails and mocktails. The service is also great and the staff are always kind. The ambiance is terrific- I recommend getting a seat outside on the patio- it's got a roof that shields you from the sun/rain but you can still enjoy the lighting and fresh air while you eat. Seating is limited here, but outdoor seating is quite acceptable with an overhead cover and heat on a chilly day. My favorite part of the lunch special is the light salad dressing. They were whole peanuts and not crushed, so it was easy to avoid. The other two dishes were fine. A little bland, and not too much heat for Thai hot. We chose to sit outside in the restaurant section, and to our surprise, on a Saturday night at 7 PM, there was no wait. I always come here for the curry noodles, my friends and I have been obsessed with them since college. I usually get it with green curry and chicken, as the flavors balance together well with soup and noodles. Their pad kra pao is also very flavorful, but would definitely recommend getting it with rice as there needs to be something to balance the strong flavors. I like that they offer various brews (both local and less local), and was pleasantly surprised by the 2 Towns Ciderhouse cosmic apple cider they had. I'm usually not big on ciders, but loved the taste! Service wasn't slow but wasn't fast either. I mentioned this to the waitress and she tells me the prawns were a substitute for less chicken, which wasn't what I wanted. I wanted to add on shrimp, not substitute. Oh man, what a trip down memory lane! Fond memories of Sophia's back when I was a student here. Back then, they used to have an unlimited thai iced tea refills deal. No longer the case (and probably for the best). Came here on a rainy Sunday evening. We had a group of seven, so opted for outside seating with the awning, since inside seating was a bit tight. Even just waiting for the bathroom, I felt like I was in the way, since the bathroom and kitchen share a narrow corridor where employees have to pass through and a bussing station on the other side. Apparently, they have a bathroom outside as well, so that would have been an option. As a group, we ordered some drinks, curries, and noodle dishes. I forgot how much fun the drinks are. Took awhile for our food to come out, but when it did, it all came out at once and the portion sizes were generous. The curries tasted fine, but were a bit more fluid than I am used to for a curry. Last Thursday I met up with a good friend of mine to try this place out in downtown Davis! We've dined at various locations together, but we both wanted to try Sophia's. Lunch was a good time to come. It wasn't too busy, and most people were sitting in the covered patio area. We opted to sit inside and were seated right away. It was quiet inside and clean. My friend chose the pad Thai lunch special, which comes with a side salad and a veggie egg roll. For $14 it was a good portion size, and we both tried the noodles. They had a good wok flavor and the tofu was bouncy and chewy! We liked how many peanuts she got to sprinkle over her pad Thai. I chose the red curry noodles instead of a lunch special. You have a choice of red or green curry. For $18 it was a good size, a bit on the pricey side, but ultimately I could not finish my curry noodles and took some leftovers home. The curry was rich and I asked for the spice rack so I could put some chili flakes in the soup, which added another dimension to the flavor. There was a good amount of chicken and the veggies were all cooked perfectly, and had a good bite. The noodles were a bit clumped together, but the dish does come with wide rice noodles. However, they were not overcooked and still had a good mouthfeel to them. We both chose Thai tea and were pleasantly surprised to find that they offer unlimited refills, as long as you are sitting down. You cannot take unfinished Thai tea to go. For $4, the Thai tea was actually really good, and not watered down like some other restaurants'. Sophia's also offers beers and other alcoholic drinks, but we were there for lunch and as it was our first time, we just wanted to try the classic dishes. I would definitely come back with my husband and order a beer next time though. Overall, for downtown Davis, the price is on the higher side, but the service is fantastic, the glasses they use for water and drinks are very cool (they're shaped like bamboo trunks), the dishes that the food is served on are made of quality plastic, the takeout containers are some of the best I've seen, the food is pretty great, and I would like to come back and try their other dishes. read more

Went here around 8PM and the bar area wasn't that crowded so we were able to place our orders pretty quick. We were doing the Davis Trinity (iykyk) so we each ordered the Thai Breaker. A lot of people said this drink is the strongest out of the Trinity but it honestly was very refreshing and pretty easy to down. This man is very rude and I am not sure what caused him to be like this because we patiently waited for over 30 minutes and tipped the lady we were serviced by. He really ruined a lovely Thursday night. A bowl of curry was always my favorite along with refreshing and spicy papaya salad. I enjoyed eating every single dish there and was just amazed at the fact that their food did not change after 10+ some years!!! However, I do have to say the ambiance changed. TTHERE WERE SO MANY FLIES!!!!!! LIKE DISGUSTING FLIESSSSSS! I guess flies always find Asian food yummy and wanted to land on every single dish on the table. On one hand, I was holding chopsticks busy stuffing my face while the other hand was flapping around to make sure the flies don't land on my food! Ugh, I have never seen so many flies attacking food before. We even put some of the food to the side just just so the flies can enjoy those food and leave our actual food alone. Nope. Humans are too complicated for their dirty little heads, and they wanted all. Eventually my enjoyable lunch turned into a quick bite like how it was in my old college days... So a quick tip: DO NOT SIT OUTSIDE! If you are concerned with Covid, get it to go.
