My girlfriend and I met up here for a dinner catch-up. I had heard good things about the restaurant. The menu is stacked so we needed some time to look it over. It's Asian-fusion so some of the combos were interesting (miso-mushroom burger) and sounded intriguing (Birria ramen). I went with the Birria Fried Rice and she got the cucumber salad and chicken wings. Her food came out well before mine so that was kind of annoying. But she said she didn't mind if her wings were hot and the salad was already cold. It was 10 more minutes before my meal came out. I was pleasantly surprised with the portion size. The fried egg on top was a bonus! The meat was cooked very well - tender and flavorful. The rice was a little more saucy than I would have preferred, but still yummy. I ended up taking home 2/3 of it. I love when I have lunch the next day!! The free Photo Booth was a great addition! The restaurant was empty while we were there, but we arrived when they first opened, so... By the time we left, a few of the tables were being used. I met a friend for lunch at around 11:30 a.m. on a Thursday. The restaurant was empty when we arrived and we were given our choice of tables. There were booths and tables with chairs. We chose the table because the booths looked uncomfortable. Another couple of diners came to eat while we were there. I had the Yellow Curry. I added chicken for an additional $3 because the basic dish was just sauce with potato and carrot. Most other restaurants include a protein in the price. The dish itself was just OK, it was a bit too sweet, I guess from the coconut milk. The portion size was good, I'll get an additional meal from the leftovers. My friend had the Pad Kee Mow and she graded it "A". Perhaps I made the wrong choice or am more finicky about my food. After eating the waiter came by holding a tablet saying he could take payment. He didn't show us the totals, just said we could give him our credit cards. We did so and we each asked for a printed receipt. When I got my receipt I saw there were two totals, one for cash and the other for credit (worked out to be a 3% fee.) That was never mentioned, neither by the waiter nor by the menu. I usually pay by cash but when the waiter said he'd take our cards, I assumed that was the preferred payment method. read more

We wanted to try something new but it was a little late so not many options that weren't fast food. so we drove 20 min to Davis to find this small restaurant. It was a seat yourself and order at the bar type vibe which was fine with us. Davis is a college town so it was really packed and pretty loud. That's was a pretty good sign for us. Staff was friendly and helpful with any questions we had. We sat towards the back and picked up some menus before we went up to order, we got an appetizer and 3 main courses.. LOVE Red 88. Such great comfort food & delicious drinks. My food recs: My favorite is the Pad Kee Mow or the Spicy Udon noodles. I put my friends onto the Pad Kee Mow and they were addicted too. Drunken fries w/ birria and Thai Zesty Red 88 wings are sooo good too! Drink recs: The ABG, Hot Lips, Kiss my Blossom, Orgy on the beach pitcher, Thai iced tea Lovely staff & fun vibe. The service was amazing and our server kept asking what he could do to improve our meal, very nice. The inside was also clean and well maintained. Chicken Potstickers - 8/10 Comes with nine potstickers and a nice amount of filling in each. Very well cooked and juicy chicken. Vegetables cooked well, still a nice crunch. Would have again. Chicken Satay - 5/10 Comes with four skewers which aren't that big. Not my favorite, too sweet in my opinion. The chicken is a bit dry too. Basil Fried Rice with Fish - 8/10 Very big portion. I visited Red 88 with my daughter while checking out local restaurants downtown, and overall, it was a great experience. The Drunken Pig Fries were definitely the standout--crispy, flavorful, and packed with savory goodness. The Pad Thai was solid, maybe a touch sweeter than I prefer, but still tasty and well-cooked. We finished with the Sticky Rice and Sweet Mango, which was fresh and satisfying--light, not overly sweet. The atmosphere is loud and high-energy, with lots of college students hanging out, taking shots, and clearly having a good time. Not ideal if you're looking for a quiet meal, but it adds a certain fun, lively charm if you're in the right mood. Service was friendly, and the food came out quickly. Came here for dinner to treat my nephew and his gf since they both go to UC Davis. Red 88 has a 2-for-$15 deal that's honestly such a steal so we had to come and check it out. You get an entrée and a drink (alcoholic or non-alcoholic). I got the chow mein with tofu and a Mango Monsoon drink. The drink was great, but the chow mein was a little bland for me and the noodles-to-veggie ratio felt off. Service was awesome though, and their drinks are always on point (the ABG is my fave). Next time I'll try the fried rice and get an alcoholic drink! read more

I used to love this place. Their BBQ Pork Fried Noodle used to have more complex flavors like 5 years ago. Now it just tastes very oily and way too salty. Their dishes seem so enticing but after several bites, the flavor gets boring. Their dishes are unique and trendy but I wish each dish was done phenomenally. Service was great. Stopped by for some takeout dinner on a busy day. The restaurant is a little annoying to get to since G street is closed to drivers, but you can find parking around the corner. The staff are friendly even when they're in the middle of a dinner rush and they got my order to me quickly. As a heads up for the noise and light sensitive, there is a LOT going on inside this restaurant and it can get pretty loud. I got the birria fried rice and a Thai tea. The whole meal was super rich and I couldn't eat much of it in one sitting. It was a little saltier than I expected and I did not receive any citrus garnish to cut that flavor. However, it was super delicious! I had the leftovers are burritos that I added some beans to over the course of the next few days. The Thai tea was also really good, though a little sweeter than expected. The portion sizes for both were also decently large. I don't think I would want to go and sit down for dinner here, but I definitely would get their takeout again! read more

Red 88 is a classic in Davis, and always has a super fun atmosphere- from the Polaroids on the wall to the big bright birthday wheel, and the videos playing of ski shots being taken. They are first and foremost, in my opinion, a college bar. By that I mean their main product is the drinks they make, and they are know for super sweet drinks and shooters with little to no alcohol taste. This is not typically my preference in drinks, and I tend to find their drink menu overly sweet for my taste. Having said that, everyone has different alcohol preferences! So if you are someone who hates tasting the alcohol, and can handle some sweetness, this is your type of bar. The food is very solidly average. Some dishes are downright bad (the Red 88 fried rice is $16 for ...rice. And an egg and some chives. A bit of protein. But not $16 worth, and it's a fairly poor quality dish regardless of the price). Others are enjoyable - pad kee mow is a difficult dish to mess up, and their's is pretty decent! My friend swears by the Birria Noodz, and you get a huge portion! Overall, the food is fine. Most of it isn't outright offensive, but it's not the restaurant's focus, and it shows. It's good food to have before or after drinking, although you can get same quality and amount for much cheaper across the street at Open Rice Kitchen. Bottom Line: Red 88 is a pretty good bar! If you appreciated them for what they are, which is not primarily a restaurant, it'll hopefully be a good experience. read more

Red 88 is definitely more western than Asian Reasons being (no flavor) - Pad Thai: was too sweet, no flavor at all, and everything was white?... we asked for more pad Thai 'sauce' and the server informed us that the reason why there's no sauce is bc the noodles soaked it all up? - Chow Mein: again bland. - Loaded pig fries: fries were crispy but needed some flavor. Green sauce perhaps? Or maybe a dust of some paprika, garlic powder, etc - BBQ pork noodles (with soup): it's just a ramen packet with msg & a couple of things.. - Fried Rice: rice was too soggy. Wasn't crispy.. wasn't the typical fried rice you'd get at an Asian restaurant. - Thai Tea: was good. Normal. Overall, everything just needed more flavor. Service was pretty good. This was our second time eating at Red 88. The service was quick and friendly. The chickenless curry fried rice was very delicious, however I prefer it with veggies. I also got the yellow curry with tofu and vegetables. These two dishes complemented each other well. The avocado cream cheese rolls were interesting but not worth getting in my opinion. My friend and I went because of the gluten free options but it turned out to be pretty bad. The food wasn't good. My friend's chicken satay was burned. The server was extremely slow and didn't know much about the menu. By the end of us eating there a group of about 15-20 college kids overwhelmed the place with screaming and yelling, ordering shots and drinks (this was probably around 7pm on a Thursday). Server didn't do a thing to try and manage the restaurant. After like 15 minutes I had to go to the server and ask for the bill to hurry and get out of there. She told me to go around to the front of the register, which was blocked by all the kids, so I had to uncomfortably say no, can you just run my card at the register and return it to me? (I mean isn't that would she would have done if we were still at the table?) read more

I've been to Red 88 a few times for their drinks when I was living in Davis as a student. I always got the mango margarita. I recently came back for picnic day, and my friend who absolutely loved this place for their eggplant really wanted to come here for lunch. When we came here, we saw that the place had a reduced menu for picnic day so they didn't have the eggplant dish that my friend came here for. However, we were already there so decided to stay. Security was pretty thorough. They retrieved my empty hydroflask, and apparently my unopened bag of Swedish fish also looked sus to them but they let me take that in. We ordered drunken pig fries for the table. My friend got the chow mein, and my bf and I shared the spicy ramen bbq pork. I also got a hard Thai tea. The drink was pretty good. You could taste the alcohol but it wasn't too strong. Food, on the other hand, was mediocre. My bf was pretty disappointed with this place. The noodles were equivalent to dry instant noodles with a few pieces of pork and bok choy thrown in. My friend also said his chow mein was "alright". As for the fries, I actually enjoyed them, and I would probably only get this if I ever had to come back here. In regards to other factors that I noticed, we sat outside and the chairs and tables were pretty cramped. I literally could not sit across from the table because the table behind me had their chair pushed back against our table. I still kept getting bumped by servers and other customers because the trash bins also made for a narrow space behind me. Additionally, one of the servers was cleaning up our plates and almost took the plate of fries I was still working on, so it kind of felt like they were rushing us. As a bar, this place is pretty great for drinks. Food...not so much. I might have enjoyed this more as a drunk college student, but the food is still way overpriced for what you get. read more

As he was spinning the wheel, the waiter rang a bell and "woo-ed" lol. We sat down for the drinks and I decided to order something to nibble on. Went with the chicken chow mein. It looked and smelled amazing, especially with the cilantro topping. It had great flavor, however, the chicken was dry. Everything about the noodles seemed like it was take-out that has been reheated. Definitely not a place to go to if you want authentic Chinese food. The best time to come here is at night time. Downtown Davis becomes alive, and the environment is very nice and social. Expect a wait here at the Red 88 Noodle Bar, as it's a very busy area. I'd love to give it 5 stars, but the noodles are a miss sometimes. But I'll keep checking in and try different things. For first timers, try the duck noodles. So delicious and good portions. Shocked that Red 88 doesn't have more stars! I think people forget that this is not necessarily a restaurant, but a bar with bar food. It isn't going to be 5 star restaurant worthy, but it still hits the spot. I love the creamy miso mushroom pasta and the drunken pig fries. Paired with few great drinks and everything tastes even better ;) They have a great variety of alcoholic and non alcoholic drinks for a great price. What I love most is how I can barely taste the alcohol making it so much easier to enjoy my drink. Staff is always VERY kind and friendly. Some even recognize me and my friends because we show up so often. Great seating indoors and outdoors! It gets pretty packed and loud so be prepared. read more

I was hoping because it was late during the week that the food we order was really bad. After reading other reviews looks like that wasn't the case and red88 is just bad a making food. I ordered the FIRE ROASTED GOCHUJANG RIBS FRIED RICE which I'm sure they had refrigerated the meat right before serving it. It was microwaved heated and the center part close to the bone was still cold. The rice and egg were fresh but the whole cold rib just made it a bad experience. It's nicely decorated and the staff is attentive. Good food go somewhere else. read more

Their Red 88 Fried Rice with bbq pork here is so, so good. I highly recommend coming here for it, especially during happy hour. The interior has a fun vibe, too, but frankly, I think what stood out most about this restaurant was the service. The servers and chefs here were amazing about keeping people with allergies safe. I came with a friend who can't eat gluten, and they made sure her dish was safe for her to eat. They even went so far as to let me and our other friend know whether or not our dishes were safe to share with her. (The BBQ pork is not, according to our servers, but they very kindly offered to put it on the side so I could share my rice with her :) 100/10, will go again.) read more

As speculated, it did not take very long for me to return. This time I was able to take full advantage of Red 88's abundant outdoor seating. While it wasn't very busy at all the night I went, I can imagine how nice it must be to have so much seating when things get busy. Overall a really nice place to dine as far as temporary-pop-up-outdoor-seating goes. The service is another thing I didn't get to experience the first time 'round and I have to say it was exemplary! What really prompted me to update my review, though, is the veggie chow mein. Oh my lord. It was no doubt some of the best chow mein I've ever had (we're talking top 3 here). I was decently impressed with their chicken chow mein - but the veggie chow mein - there must be something in those veggies, I'm telling y'all. At this rate, I can only assume that each of my subsequent visits to Red 88 will continue to get better and better - hopefully we'll have a six star rating option by then. read more
