I purchased a baby shower cake here just before Christmas. The staff were very helpful, guiding me to the right-sized cake for the number of people we were expecting. I selected one of the designs from their website. On the day of the shower I was able to pick up the cake early on a Sunday morning without any trouble. $6.75 for 2 partially frozen and stale cupcakes! How does one screw cupcakes up? We walked in from out of town today and were impressed by the shop itself, but this ended abruptly upon our attempt to consume these abominations that they were trying to pass off as "cupcakes". They had to have been a week or more old. The sad thing is that there are so many reviews on here now that I look, mentioning the same exact complaints that I am bringing up. Apparently they freeze everything that is at the front counter so nothing is fresh. No wonder they were crumbling to pieces in a dry heap as I attempted to take pieces off to eat. Sinking your teeth into the mound of frosting sitting atop the cake was nearly impossible because of how frozen it still was. How is the shop still in business selling this garbage despite so many previous negative reviews? I did not think that a bad cupcake was even possible before today. Why did they have to take that final remaining shred of my innocence away? Save your money, you can literally get a better cupcake anywhere else. I would rather have come to your house and given you $6.75 for two cupcakes from a Betty Crocker mix. I'm sure that they would have been delicious. read more

My wife and daughters have been going to this place for years and think its the best. The product had never been a problem, always first rate. But at times the customer service and their policy's really will hurt them at the end. The owner has to realize that the customer that's been coming there for years is loyal and the owner should be accommodating to the customer if possible. It's like the soup Kicthen, its your privilege to buy something from them and sadly they should know, it's the other way around. Hopefully they will get it or not. I first visited Sophisticakes for a cake for my 5-year-old twin boys. They were into castles and Knights at the time. Kathy and her crew came up with the most incredible castle with turrets and dragons, even a drawbridge and moat! We had so many oohs and ahhs and wow! Once they tasted Kathys amazing butter cream icing they were completely blown away! That was 12 years ago and we have had a Sophisticake for every birthday since! While they are no longer having the big parties with every kid they know and no more theme cakes, over the years Kathy and her crew crafted Pokemon. Yu Gi Oh, SpongeBob, Spider-Man, Soccer fields, and a giant roller blade cake for a skating party! Now we just get cakes with their names. But a trip there always includes cake pops, cupcakes, cookies, and on the weekends their luscious sticky buns! Get your next cake there! read more

I was just the maid of honor at the wedding of my best friend who bought a cake from Sopistacakes and I cannot believe the lack of service we received. The cake was over two hours late! It was so embarrassing to try and hide from 90 plus guests that kept asking where the cake was that we didn't even know if we were going to have one. A mistake was made but the way the situation was handled was unprofessional. The bride and I both work in the service industry and if we ever treated our customers like they treated the bride and her sister we would have been fired on the spot. You are in business because of your customers and the bride and her family are regulars and your terrible attitude has lost you a lot of customers. I suggest that if you want to continue to be in the service industry some attitude adjustments are needed unless you want to find a new career! read more

When I first moved to Drexel Hill, everyone told me I needed to try this bakery. I had it for the first time at someone else's bridal shower and decided this was where we had to go for our wedding in a few months. The cake tasted unbelievable and looked gorgeous, a few of our guests actually said it was the best wedding cake they had ever had. Also, the employees there are so nice and helpful. I've been here twice now, recently giving this place a second chance and I'm sorry I did. The first time I went I bought several different cupcake flavors, each were bland, dry, and tasted old (I took one bite of each and no more). The second time I went i decided against the cupcakes because they looked dry again. I tried the french macarons because they are one of my favorite desserts ever. Ugh, they were dry, crunchy, and some just tasted odd. All these problems may be forgivable if they weren't so damned pricy. This place is not worth a third visit. Love their cakes. I would have given 5 stars, but I've been disappointed in their cupcakes. I'm not sure why they are so different than the cakes (which are superb) but the cupcakes I've gotten are almost always dry, crumbly, and fairly tasteless. Horrible customer service. They did not give me the correct change. I called them immediately. They told me to come to the store and I would receive my correct amount of money. I went the next day to get my $10 back and was told I was not getting it. I was told it was Monday and the owner would not be in and the manager would not be in and they could not call them. After insisting that they call them, they did. I was then told that their drawer was fine and not showing they had extra money. I then said that the employee would probably have put it in her pocket. Because I was not given the correct amount of money. Pretty interesting considering yesterday I was told how much money I gave them and how much change I got and that I was still owed $10. But yet today the whole story changed. I then explained I was going to call authorities and look at their surveillance cameras. After 20 minutes of me not leaving the store, I was given the $10. I was only given a $10 because she did not want me to contact authorities or look into their employee taking my money. They were very ignorant from the time that I called when I got home including the time today when I went to pick up my money. They do not use cash registers and no receipts. read more

I feel the need to write this review. We have 4 sons that have been married in the last 6 years. I have ordered many many cakes between showers, birthdays and now baby showers, christening and first birthdays too! We started out with them loving everything we ordered. Suzanne has always taken time to design my ideas for the event. One time they messed up the filling for my grand daughters first bday cake, I let it slide even though it was a very big, very expensive cake. Then I ordered 60 cupcakes which I may add was a hefty bill, and I get there to pick them up and they are all wrong !! Kathy the owner who knew me from coming in never gave me eye contact or try to rectify it, so the very next day I was back picking up a large cake for my other grand daughters christening and expected a monetary discount and yup you guessed it - nothing !! I have never had a problem with freshness but they are getting to big for their britches. They should remember without their faithful customers they have nothing ! read more

Sorry Sophisticakes but I was so dissatisfied with the items I purchased yesterday that I had to write this review. I've had orders from there in the past and they were really good. This time however I popped in for some cupcakes from the case to give to a friend to cheer her up. Instead of bringing her moist delicious treats I ended up with old, dry cupcakes. The Orange with Pistachio was so stale it was rock hard. The icing was also old and dehydrated. The Salted Chocolate Carmel was marginally fresher but hardly any caramel and not a spec of sea salt to be found. Finally, the seasonal Maple Bacon cupcake was a huge miss. The cake was dry and dense and the "bacon" was odd to say the least. It seemed like bacon bits to us. What a disappointment! I don't know what is going on with this bakery but the quality, taste, and appearance don't seem to be what they once were. On a positive note, the woman who waited on me was lovely but the two employees behind her were annoyed with some sort of issue and not making any attempts to hide it. Ordered and purchased a cake and smash cake for a first birthday. Cake was decorated as desired however when cake was cut open it was not the cake order I had placed and read back verified in the shop. I ordered chocolate chip pound which I've had before and is delicious . The cake received was a plain vanilla. I called the shop the next day and the manager for the shift apologized and read back my order to verify that I did order and pay for a chocolate chip pound . I was then asked for my contact information address included because the owner needed to be spoken to. but that I would receive something in the mail . Almost a month has gone by and no phone call or mail. I getting ready to order another cake for a November party however I may pass this was my first personal experience with sophisticakes and am disappointed with the lack of follow through. The last birthday cake I bought from there, about 6 mos ago was dry and still frozen when we cut into it - not enjoyable at all! Still, their work is beautiful so I recently went back for a quote on a groom's cake. I arrived and the staff was friendly, I showed pictures and shared my ideas with the decorator and told her I wanted to stay at a certain budget. She went in the back to price it out and came back with a price $14 higher than my top budget, fine whatever I could deal with the $14 difference. As we were placing the order she "misplaced" her breakdown of the pricing and had to go in the back to redo it. Once she came back and I had my credit card in hand she said she "miscalculated the price" and it was now $50 higher than my max price. When questioned why she said her manager informed her she miscalculated. Needless to say I walked out of there without ordering the cake and will go elsewhere that doesn't make me feel like I'm in negotiations to buy a used car. read more

Shocked,sad and embarrassed...I ordered a cake a month ago for my sister's wedding....needless to say NEVER again. It was suppose to be delivered to anthonys by 6 pm on 5/31/2013. by 7:30 I had to leave the party,drive to the bakery ,knock on the door because they were closed....the manager was cleaning...looked like she was dumb,no expression on her face and Said" she lost track of time"...30 mins later she showed up to anthonys with a cake that was different from what I ordered...called her this morning and pretty much she doesn't care...we ate the cake so no refund the cake was delivered so no refund....I am in shock and my poor little sister is so embarrassed. If this is for a major event please do not order from here...last minute cake,cupcake fine but they aren't dependable and certainly not people friendly....I don't know how to make this up to my sis! My husband and i drove from West Chester PA to Drexel Hill to buy 6 cupcakes. We were told these were the best you would ever eat- this coming from someone raised in Drexel Hill. You can imagine we were both so excited. We ordered 6 different cupcakes- 2 for him- 2 for me and 2 to split. We watched the eagles lose to Dallas and thought well at least we have the cupcakes. We each took our two and began savoring as we sat down watching the Steelers. And that was the second loss for us that day-not the game as it was still in progress -but ALL 6 cupcake selections-wow they felt like they were hard but we realized they were like heavy muffins you get at some stores. The flavor was less than acceptable and the texture was hard and not tasty at all. In fact we could not even bear to eat them - we are both on diets and today was our cheat day-but truthfully they were not worth the calories-the drive to get them or the price-extremly disappointed. read more
