We chose Sorento for our Winterlicious date outing, mainly for the Italian food options and it's location (Don Mills/Wynford) area. Depending on where you sit, if facing the fresco wall, it feels and look (on pictures) like you are truly in Italy. If sat against the other wall, it looks like you're in Swiss Chalet lol. For apps, we chose the Italian salad and garlic bread. Garlic bread was great, warm, buttery, cheesy. The salad was not memorable, except largeish. For the mains, we chose the lasagne and spaghetti toscana, both are done well. Neither needed extra salting and balanced each other out (if you're sharing) in terms of acidity and saltiness. The let down was the dessert. The menu showed panna cotta, which was not available (they havent made any), so we chose the creme brule and tiramisu, both were great. Overall a great date lunch. Recommended if you're looking to try out a new Italian spot. Wheelchair accessible. Staff are friendly (man our server was a funny guy)! read more

This place gets a 5 star because the food is just so good for it's price point. They renovated this place 2-3 years ago so the lights now are a bit brighter. They did keep the part of the restaurant that feels a bit like you're in a Mediterranean cave. Must have here is their stone cooked pizza, there's 4 slices and is enough for one person, so would order more if sharing. Service was pretty good and friendly but they did not change our plates after shells accumulated. Highly recommend this place read more

Did I even go to the same restaurant as everyone else here? Where do I begin - we came on a Sunday during lunch hours, and the entire restaurant was empty save for one table. Server was polite and friendly and we took booth seating to enjoy some sunlight. An immediate problem was that our cutlery had some dried food stuck to it, and there were previous food stains still on the table that weren't cleaned off. There were also some white powder(?) footprint stains on the floor and the booth backseats had stains on them. I'm no stranger to unclean restaurants but here it felt like everywhere I looked I spotted some uncleaned grime that really gave the restaurant a slipshod vibe. Anyways for the food, we ordered the grilled calamari as a starter, a pepperoni pizza, and the mussels/shrimp terragon cream sauce bowtie pasta dish. The calamari I thought was fine, not too chewy and it tasted like it was grilled, though a small gripe was that some of the pieces had straight up burnt edges (rather than a sear/char). The pizza was closer to an American or western fast food pizza joint than an ""italian"" styled pizza, and surprisingly the dough was a little undercooked in the middle. It was also super greasy and oily all around. The terragon pasta was pretty bad in all aspects as well - the bowtie pasta was both soggy and crumbly at the same time (microwaved? or precooked packaged pasta left to sit), and the sauce was thin, watery, and completely underseasoned, and complemented with parmesan spooned from a plastic wrapped bowl unceremoniously onto my plate. While the servers were nice, the experience as a whole was very underwhelming as we sat alone in the entire restaurant on a Sunday afternoon eating greasy and underseasoned food trying not to look around too much. For basically the same price as other Italian restaurant staples in the city, please head somewhere else. read more

Came on a Saturday evening for dinner and was seated promptly. Unfortunately, they seemed to be very short staffed as only two waiters were taking care of the whole restaurant and the patio. It took a while to get the menu, took a while to get water, took a while to order..... you get the picture. The food itself was actually very good in both flavor, quality and quantity. We shared the Greek salad, Ground beef kebab, Seafood al pascatore, Capricciosa pizza, Florentina pizza and the Tiramisu between 4 adults. Each item was good, with my favourite being the pasta for its amazing dept of flavors. The wood fire oven pizza were a hit also. Only the Tiramisu was a little strange as it was both cold and hot at the same time, with some drippy sauce poured on top. Great food, mediocre service. Don't come if you are in a rush or hangry. The food is delicious. Our party of 5 had dinner here on Friday night. The place is almost packed when we got there. The waiter showed us the table which is near the kitchen but he was very nice to switch our table to the side which gave us more space. We ordered the food from the winterlicious menu. It is well worth it for fix menu of $35 for a three courses meal. As a foreigner from New York I would recommend this restaurant for someone who like Italian food read more

Came here for lunch and the quality of the food was a pleasant surprise. I decided to come try this restaurant due to the appetizing picture of seafood pasta on the side of its patio, and it did not disappoint. It's called Seafood Al Pescatore, which contains large shrimps, mussels, calamari, and scallops on fresh house-made pasta. The secret in its amazing taste is the fresh made pesto and olive oil drizzled in the pasta, it is a taste like no other and I highly recommend it. The seafoods were really fresh as well and have a hint of sweetness. I also tried their Roma Pizza, which is topped with escargot, red pepper, shrimps, sun dried tomatoes, and mozzarella cheese. It was oven baked and the toppings had just the right quantity and not too greasy. I liked how thin the crust it and I even ate the end of the crust! That was how good the pizza was. Despite the great Italian food, I did find the service to be a tad bit slow, as it was a bit of a struggle to get the waiter sometimes. I tried the Roma wood oven pizza, the Sorento's special steak wood oven pizza, and the smoked mushroom salad. I was very impressed with the Pizza quality. I liked that the dough was very thin and light. It also had the perfect topping to sauce ratio, which I find many pizzas lack! Every bite had a bit of sauce, meat/seafood and cheese, which was good. The salad was a bit on the salty side as there was a bit too much balsamic and vinegar for my liking. We came here as a last minute decision. The gentlemen who seems to be the owner is very attentive and really is on top of looking after the guests. Our appetizers were great we had escargot, Greek salad (looked very fresh), calamari, and brushetta. The main course we were not as excited about. The seafood pasta was great tasty good portions, the kale pesto and sausage was not that good. I've seen pictures of other pizzas i I think I should have opted for. My pizza was soggy in the middle tasted on the greasy end the flavours didn't complement each other too well. The owner was very kind to offer to make me a fresh one but I think the pesto sauce needs to be redone and perhaps the sausage a ma small ball sizes instead of the sliced I think would make all the difference. Chicken parm was ok though the guest said his seemed to be precooked. Overall I would come back to try again because the owner was so nice but not 100% satisfied. read more

I ate at this restaurant twice during my stay in Toronto. The food was delicious, fresh and well prepared. The portions were very large for the price. The service was excellent. I was recognized as soon as I entered on the second visit. It's a very casual restaurant, but an excellent value for the quality and quantity of food. I had the vegetarian pizza one night, and the mushroom veal the second night. Both were very tasty. I highly recommend this restaurant. read more

I come here often for lunch. They're really good at providing fast service for employees that need to get back to work. Food is really good. Some great pastas and pizzas. They have a lot of unique toppings as well that I havent seen anywhere else. The food is filling and great for its price. Most items are under 20$. The atmosphere is beautiful. Very euro artsy. Nice decor. Quite spacious so it's very quiet. During the summers you can sit at the patio. Only downfall is sometimes theyre too rushed. I reserved a table at their website, but when we got there, they could not find our reservation. Not a big deal as they seated us at a table anyway. Appetizer: We ordered a calamari and smoked eggplant. The calamari was good, the smoked eggplant was a disappointment. The bread that came with the eggplant was chewy and tasted like pizza dough. The eggplant had a lot of tomatoes in it, and the tomatoes overpowered the eggplant. Main: We had a pasta and a pizza. Both were fresh but a bit under seasoned. The pasta was not heated thoroughly and part of it was warm yet another part was cold. Service: The pizza came before the pasta... and we have to ask for refills all the time. Eclectic menu combines Italian (pasta/pizza) with Persian (kebabs). Huh? Whatever, I didn't think the owners/staff were Italians so I went with the kebabs (ground beef and chicken). I'd say the ground beef was a 4 and the chicken was a 3. Both were tasty, and someone else might give them a higher mark, the taste of the chicken just didn't do anything for me. Salad was very nice (fresh, leafy greens, not just cheapo iceberg lettuce chunks) and the broiled tomato was a really nice touch. Basmati rice was OK but for the price of the meal I would have liked to taste a bit of saffron, not just plain old white Basmati. I also had a couple of slices of my son's Con Pollo pizza (with chicken, sun dried tomatoes and feta) because my meal wasn't filling enough. The pizza was OK but again, not anything to write home (or to Yelp) about. Dessert was a shared square of tiramisu -- tasty but it was a tad soggy on the bottom. Coffee was good and strong, just the way I like it. I'll come here again for a change of pace, but there are lots of choices in the same plaza so it won't be very often. So we proceeded to walk in on our own then we saw a server peer from behind the counters. He gestured us to sit anywhere. Waited around for the menus...they finally came. Then the server disappeared again... Eventually, we ordered the calamari to start. It was lightly battered not rubbery. It was okay nothing to write home about. We also had the chicken kebob platter and the Sorentos special steak pizza as well. Both were pretty good. Decent portion and good flavour. When you walk into the restaurant, it's very dark with limited lighting. I went during lunch time and I think they turned off the lights to allow light come through the windows but it was still pretty dark. For their lunch service, it wasn't super busy but they do get a rush of people coming in from workers at offices near by. I went there with a group of six. I ordered the chicken kebob lunch. The waiter is nice but not very attentive as when he brought the food over, he forgot what each person ordered. My chicken kebab came with a small pack of butter which I thought was strange because I didn't get any bread for my lunch. I'm thinking they thought I wanted butter for my chicken instead of tzatziki sauce? After eating a few bites of the chicken I did request for tzatziki as it was a bit dry and tasteless without it. They were nice initially until we showed him we had a coupon...We ordered a balsamic pizza and shrimp and scallop spaghetti. This was clearly false as the coupon does not say this and it was verified by entertainment.com We didn't want to complain so we ordered pop. We were then neglected for the duration of the meal and given sub par service. Totally felt the mood change when the coupon was introduced. They never once checked on us. Anyways. The food came out and it was very average. It reminded me of the type of food you would get at a 4 star all inclusive tropical vacation buffet. Pizza - very cheesy which is a good thing if you like cheese. Did not skimp on cheese. But wasnt crispy and gets soggier as it went towards the middle. Spaghetti - portion smaller than i expected 4 jumbo shrimps that tasted very shrimpy, had an ocean water taste like it was not rinsed. Might or might not be a bad thing depending on if you like that. Scallops were over cooked and rubberish. Overall tasted like home made. Not bad but not the best. This restaurant would have gotten 3 out 5. But the discrimation i felt because we used the coupon killed it. The food is very homey and subpar i think. It takes a lot to irk me. And this place did it. The food, was good. Nothing special, but it was good. That's where the positive ends. First off, we were a party of 10. So naturally, a 15% gratuity is added to the bill. Pretty standard. What was NOT standard, was the manner in which it was implemented. First, the receipt didn't even have the tip added to it. So when I wanted to pay by Credit Card, I was just going to add my standard 20% and be done with it. Well, that didn't happen. Instead of doing it like every other restaurant I've been to, (Simply adding the 15% to the total when you hand them the machine. If they ask, you simply tell them 15% has been added as per the menu) they did it their way. I was handed the machine with my chip in and ready for my PIN. I thought it was a little odd, but continued. Bam! Transaction complete. No tip option, no displaying dollar value. Nothing. Just "here's your receipt". (NO! It doesn't work like that) I looked at it, and she sure enough had added the 15%. Hey, no skin off my back if you want to be sneaky and not get my extra 5% tip. Not my problem. But it didn't end there. She didn't even serve us. She walked to the end of the table and had US pass everything down. The water, the food, the bills. Just about everything, she ONLY brought to the table. (Ok, some of the food, her other staff helped, but she didn't really move down the table accept to TAKE the order, and to pick up the bills. My co-worker only had water to drink, but there was a pop on the bill. When we told her that it was in error, she retorted back "Well someone must have had it". We had to explain that all the people who had pops, (4 of us) all had them on our bills. So she gave in. But we were in a hurry and were trying to get out, so we suggested, could we just pay it as if the coke wasn't on it, as we are in a hurry. (It took over 40 minutes for our food to get to our table) She said "sure" and walked away. huh????? So, we waited. She finally came back and we could pay the last bill and get out. We will not be going back. Not worth it. On a side note, I'm lactose intolerant. (I know, hard to go out for food) But usually there are SOME alternatives. EVERY pizza has mozzarella. No goat cheese pizzas, no Asiago, no buffalo mozzarella, just plain mozzarella pizzas. For a restaurant, I would think just a COUPLE options would be necessary. Oh well. read more

3.5 Went here for dinner on a sunday night with some friends. Sorento is one of those middle of the road type of places for me. Nothing done poorly, but nothing that will floor you either. It's also got curries and Persian food that you won't find at other Italian restaurants. The pizzas were a good size, easily share-able for 2 people and the steak sandwich seemed big form what I saw. I can only review the 2 pastas I and my girlfriend shared. We had the Linguini ai Fungi and the Fettuccine Pollo Pesto. The Linguini ai Fungi was the better of the two. The portion was great and the taste pretty good. They could of given us more sauce though, the noodles seemed barely coated in it. The pesto dish disappointed us. My gf and I love pesto too. There was barely any sauce as well. The chicken was a tad dry too. The dish wasn't bad, but there was so much potential for more. When the waitress found out we were there the first time, I think she went and told the manager. He then came out to have a chat with us. I found that a nice touch. He came to welcome us and thank us for our patronage. All in all, this is a nice place to have a good Italian dinner. What is Sorrento? Is it an Italian restaurant? Greek? Pan-Mediterranean? They have pizzas and pastas, lamb shanks and pita sandwiches. Instead of feeling like a unified mediterranean menu, it feels a little like they just couldn't decide so they have a little Greek and a little Italian. It's a decent place to get a bite to eat. Everything I've had here has been decent. Nothing was terrible, nothing was exceptional. The prices were decent for Toronto, although perhaps a little high given the location and the quality. Basically, I wouldn't steer you away from Sorrento or recommend it. We've been there a bunch of times from work and we'll undoubtedly go there a bunch more, but it's not a hidden gem. Situated on Don Mills in the same plaza as the Congee Star and Swiss Chalet, I will say that between the 3 of the places this is the best if looking for a sit down meal. The price points are reasonable, and there is a good selection of options from pasta to sandwiches and burgers to wood oven pizzas to kebab plates and so on. Service was friendly and I did like the decor and the way the room was broken up. They do have a sign out front saying "Under New Management", but given this was my first time here I can't say if that's a good thing or not. I had the Veal Parmagiana Sandwich (around $8 or $9, plus $1.50 for a side of fries), and a both of my other dining compatriots ordered the 9" Chicken Club Pizza (somewhere around $12 before tax). My sandwich was pretty good, although perhaps could've used a touch more marinara sauce. But the veal was tasty. I tried a piece of the pizza and it was also quite good but not as good as I was anticipating given the wood oven preparation. We washed the food down with some pints of Moosehead, which to be honest was a bit overpriced as after tax was near $8 for a pint. In the end we were perfectly satisfied and can't really complain about anything that should persuade someone to not come here. Basically it's a situation that while I won't soon be the person to suggest coming here, if someone were to suggest the place I wouldn't be against it. read more

Nice basic Greek and Italian dishes, with a few American options (hoagies are very good, even if it's cheap white bread, cheap steak, and cheap cheese... works nicely). The handful of oddities (curries, mostly) are out of place on the menu, but I'm told they're good... so if they give families more options, I suppose that's a good thing. My one substantial complaint about Sorento's is that, as a Greek/Italian restaurant, they should know better than to use cheap, canned, sliced black olives. They have virtually no taste, and it's embarrassing that they'd skimp on such an iconic and essential ingredient. Yet there they are, crappy canned black olives, scattered over many of the classic dishes on their menu. Upgrade your olives, and I'll upgrade my review! A final note: the prices at Sorento's seem a bit askew. Some items are extremely inexpensive for what you get, while others seem a tad high... examine the menu and be aware. read more

I couldn't help but peek at the tables of the other diners, and everything looked delicious. There is a moderate wine selection and a well stocked bar. This restaurant appears to have a loyal clientele and can be quite busy at times. But why not; good food and drink, attentive service, comfortable surroundings, free parking. Passed by this place several times on my way in for congee next door and decided to try it for a change. Boy am I glad I did because everything I tried was amazing! The hummus and the salmon Salad with sautéed mushrooms? ! Zomggggg I made noises with my mouth while nodding my head with approval with every bite lol. I ordered the cheesecake ball for dessert which was just ok. I guess I was expecting more after such an amazing dinner. I returned a second time with my family and all immensely enjoyed their food. The crust was both burned and underdone and the chicken on the florentina was not real roasted chicken but the kind you can get precooked in a package. I'd actually give this place 3.5 stars. We were a table of 7 (3 kids) and there were no issues with seating, granted it was a Saturday afternoon. Of the 4 adults, 3 had the pizza and it was very good. They didn't skimp on the cheese, but the dough could have been a little more cooked in the middle (of mine, anyway). The 4th guy had fettuccine alfredo w chicken breast. Wasn't awful but he wasn't turning cartwheels over it either. The strangest part of the visit was that the decor was hardcore Greek, but the staff (and possibly owners too) are Korean or Chinese. Very nice, just wasn't expecting it. I am so pleased to have found the Sorento Restaurant in Don Mills, Toronto. I am a part of a monthly Book Club that meets there over lunch to review a novel. The menu is extensive and I have tried many of the selections offered. All of my choices have been delectable. I often return to my first choice of Greek Salad with additional grilled shrimp. Went there with a group of four other people last night. My husband and I have been before but it was our guest's first time at Sorento. That's actually why I'm writing this review... it seems like a lot of people in the area don't know about this place. We had a couple salads to share, the Greek and the Caesar. Both were good, as always. The ingredients are really fresh and they don't skimp on the proportions. We split the salads between 4 of us and my husband had the soup (squash) which he said was really tasty and hogged to himself. We encouraged our guests to have pizza as we always really love it. We had the Mediterranean, which is, in my opinion, their best vegetarian pizza, and the BBQ Club Pizza, which was tasty as always. Our friends split a Salmon pizza, which they said was really good (not my ideal topping so I didn't try it). They wanted the pizza as an appetizer but since it's a wood oven, it takes between 10 and 15 minutes to make, so that wasn't really practical. Two of them split a pasta, the Pollo Pesto, which I had a bite of since I hadn't had it before. Very tasty! Our other friend had the Lamb, which she liked a lot. It came with veggies and potatoes. She had desert too - the tiramisu - which I will be trying next time! She said it was delicious. There was live music, which really was lively. The band played some Gypsy Kings and some of their own music in the same vein. It was someone's birthday and they played a non-annoying version of happy birthday that actually had us clapping along. There were even some people dancing. Apparently they don't come every Saturday (I think it's every other Saturday) but there's a sign up front that says when they'll be playing next. We paid the bill for our group and it was around $150, but we didn't have drinks except coffee. Overall, it was a great experience for everyone. We made a reservation, expecting that most places are going to be crowded on Saturday evening. We would never expect to be seated for over 20 minutes without anyone so much as offering us water. Maybe I'm being harsh, but when a group of 8 was seated after us and is attended to with water before we are even acknowledged we decided to just up and leave.
