These make-your-own malatang places have been a recent obsession of mine so I've tried quite a few the past couple of months and this has been my favorite so far for a few reasons: for a healthier meal, I prefer to get no spice since mala traditionally uses a ton of oil which is a huge bummer cause I love spicy food. Luckily place offers gochugaru (spicy chili powder) so I'm able to make it spicy without having to add any oil. Secondly, their sauce bar has the most offerings I've seen at a malatang place so far. Thirdly, I love how the soup comes on a burner (like Boiling Point) so my soup stays boiling hot for the entire duration of the meal. Lastly, the place is clean and by far the most spacious malatang restaurant I've been too which is great for these types of places where people are standing often to make their soups/get sauces. Hidden gem if you like spicy mala hot pot. Yes, it is spicy even at the 3 rating out of 5, so be careful when you specify the spicy rating. Also, this is one of a few King County health ratings = Excellent, which I think is impressive given all the raw ingredients are available for everyone to take to build the pot. After you choose the soup or sauce base, you then walk through the ingredient aisle to take whatever you want from veggies to meats. After you pay per weight, you ho back to your table and wait for 5 minutes or so. Then they will bring out to you fully cooked Hotpot on a small stove to keep it hot. Overall experience was great. Food was great. Too bad the location is not the best otherwise this place will be packed all the time. Compared to Boiling Pot this place delivers a real punch. read more

I went here for a Monday lunch and there was a good amount of parking in the plaza and lots of empty tables. Monday to Thursday 11-4 they have 15% off everything which was a nice surprise when I went in. This place is mostly known for the pay by the pound self-serve ingredients for mala, but Korean style. They have 2 types - malatang (broth) and mala xiang guo (stir fry). I tried the mala xiang guo variation since I've had malatang before. I got the rose mala xiang guo since I love the creamy flavor of the rose that I've had from rose tteokbokki, etc. It's nice that they had small crab, scallops, shrimp, octopus, lamb, and beef as some nice options alongside veggies, noodles, and various beef and fish and other seafood balls. The balls may not be the best value as they're heavy but I still got one of each since I love them in hot pot and such, and this is no different. But I got some crab in there to offset the value. $18.99 per pound can be pricey if you're not careful and end up getting like 2 lbs or more. It doesn't help the bowl is huge so you get the false perception you're not putting much. I ended up getting almost 1.5lbs so somewhat pricey order, but thankfully it was 15% off so it was more manageable. But the amount of food I got was enough for 1.5 meals. They do enforce a 1 lb minimum which is more than reasonable since they do the preparations to order. I love the rose mala xiang guo and the dipping sauces. One thing that could be better is the Korean vermicelli was a bit overcooked so while soft but not mushy, it was torn into pieces so it was hard to eat those by chopstick. Otherwise, great food and flexibility to your liking. Service is good as the staff was helpful and showed me how the place works as it's my first time. They were accommodating when I needed to leave after a short period of time and got the check and takeout boxes very quickly. Third time's a charm! Staff is always friendly and helpful. Love the food I got in my third visit here! The original Mala Xiangguo was super flavorful with level 1 spiciness. It was enjoyably spicy with a nice touch of sweet from the first to the last bite. Highly recommended this spicy level for Mala Xiangguo. For ingredient wise, I love the thin rice noodles, they could absorb all the sauce and flavor and went so well with rice, they were the best in my plate. Enoki mushrooms with the similar structure were tasty too. I was a bit hesitate to come back here as I thought nothing really special here, but I guess I've changed my mind after tonight since I found my best combo. I was recommended this Korean malatang restaurant and it did not disappoint! The restaurant is spacious with lots of tables. The vibe is casual and not too loud when I was there, making it suitable for conversation. Right after getting seated, we were given a huge bowl each to choose our ingredients. There are lots to choose from: meat, vegetables, mushroom and seafood. Next you choose your mala broth and spice level. The ingredients then get weighted and cooked. There's also a sauce bar with different sauce recipes for you to try out. The ingredients and sauce bar were well stocked and clean. The food came very fast. I got the rose mala xiang guo sauce and it was so delicious and flavorful! It goes very well with the sauces from the sauce bar. Now that soup weather is upon us, we are excited to try all the soupy things! This week we visited Sorimmara in Shoreline for Korean-style Malatang. It's a pay-by-weight restaurant, and they have a variety of tasty ingredients for your Malatang, from rice cake and sujebi to different cuts of meat, seafood and more. While the broth tastes a bit different from what I've tried at other Malatang restaurants, it was still very flavorful and had just the right amount of kick for me at 2 stars. Also, this was our first time seeing a dry option at a Malatang restaurant, so we had to try both. It felt like the dry version was definitely spicier than the soup version! Their menu also has a variety of appetizers and dishes to try, from fried rice to Guobarou. We tried their Shrimp Guobaorou with both the original and cream sauce, and the fried batter was light and the shrimp was so meaty. Mike says he would come back just for this! While the menu isn't completely available during soft opening (their hot pot is not available yet), everything we tried was great and we'll be back again for our Malatang fix. read more

Upon walking in, there's a self serve station of many fresh ingredients to choose from and when you take it to the cashier area, they ask what type of soup and spice level. We got their shrimp appetizer to start with and got one rose malaxianguo and regular Mala, both at spicy level 2. I would say this spice level was like a shin ramen and I wish I would've went with 3 for that extra kick. Thrilled to see a new mala tang spot in town! I love the convenience of choosing your own ingredients and customizing portion sizes. I opted for the mala tang at spice level 3, which definitely packed a punch--so if you're not great with heat, I'd suggest starting at level 1. The cream shrimp guobaorou was fantastic--super crispy with a deliciously balanced sauce. The mala mayo fried rice was also a standout, providing some welcome relief from the spice. Service was excellent; the staff was attentive, frequently checking in, and keeping the sauce and self-serve areas clean. I especially appreciated that we never had to ask for water refills--they were always on it. There were also disposable bibs available at the sauce bar. The only downside was the tables, which felt a bit small and flimsy, so just be careful with the soups and Xiang guo bowls--they're a bit slippery and could easily tip over. Once you've had malatang, you will be addicted. Ever since I got back from Korea, it has become my top food and I love that Sorimmara is most similar to the experience in Korea. I've been here around 3 or 4 times this year and it has gotten better since when they first opened. The service is always friendly. I love that their peppercorn flavor is stronger than other malatang places and their spicy is actually burn ur booty spicy. I was constantly gulping down water at level 4, but I like my food very spicy. I usually go for level 3 now, but 2 is around as spicy as shin ramen. My favorite is just the regular malatang (soup), but my guy friends prefer the rose mala xiang guo. The space is very open and spacious. read more

We got the malatang and they give you warning that a two star is equivalent to Shin Ramen, so keep that in mind! The portions are huge and recommend sharing since their minimum requirement is 1 pound. The quality of the ingredients were pretty good and it definitely had that mala flavor. The service was amazing, it was her first time there and they walked us through everything. They also speak Korean, so if you have trouble, they should be able to help! A group of friends and I came here on a Sunday afternoon for lunch. Staff was friendly and explained how it works to us since it was some of our first times. Heads up, there is a minimum weight you must meet. I got the rose sauce with level two spice which I really liked but didn't find it spicy at all. Can't believe I haven't reviewed this place yet! I went to uni for a time in Seoul and am familiar with the chain. I can confidently say that this place (as well as the Federal Way location) faithfully carry the torch. We've tried many different combinations and concepts here. I really appreciate how easy it is to make a gluten free bowl, though those with celiac may want to check with the staff about which soup bases have traces of wheat - the staff is incredibly kind, knowledgeable and helpful. Last time we went, we got cheese on top of a mala xiang guo bowl and ohhh ma lawd; so worth the extra few dollars. We love hot pot (we ust got our own set for home!) and this place has so many hard-to-find ingredients. Their sauces/soup bases are perfect, and we love coming here when we have the craving for malatang. It's a great way for multiple people to enjoy a singular bowl, since you can just pick out what you want. I have all of the tteok and he has all of the quail eggs, lol. It's pretty easy to round out at $50-$60 for two people here if you share a bowl plus a drink. I remember after opening they only had beer and maekgolli for some time, but several months ago, this particular server was excited to see us and announce that they finally got soju ^^ Testament to how friendly and caring the team is here! The only extras we've had is gyeran bokkeumbap (fried rice) and some jumeokbap (rice... uh... in a ball with fillings). I had such a fun time coming here with my friends to get warm broth on a cold day. My partner was so excited by the variety of options here (the restaurant was very well stocked with fresh ingredients) that he enthusiastically and accidentally got over 3 lbs of food, costing $58. "My son suggested we try this place, and it was my first time, but I ended up falling in love with malatang even more than he did! I always go for level 2 spiciness, and it's absolutely delicious. My friend tried the rose malatang, and when we shared it alongside the regular malatang, it was a perfect combo. For those who aren't into malatang, there's fried rice, shrimp, and pork malaxiangguo. Super excited for this new place that opened up. There was no line but the restaurant was packed, making the vibes quite nice. I like the concept of being able to pick and chose what you want in your Malatang. They have a decent selection of vegetables, noodles, seafood, and meat. Minus stars because the servers are sort of rude and have condescending tones - besides the one non Korean server, she's really sweet and nice! We got seated 50 minutes before closing and they started turning off lights in the room area and the window area 30 minutes before closing. The lighting in the entire restaurant went from a 10/10 to a 6/10. I've worked in restaurants for 4 years in my 20s and switching a light off that actually affects the entire space where customers enjoy their food is just plain rude. Also switching a light off takes maybe 1 second not even - they can do that at 10pm or 9:59pm. Not at 9:30pm while customers are still eating their meal. We left 10 minutes before closing too and didn't overstay past closing. It's really the little things that make a difference for restaurants and customer service. read more

Then you choose your broth. We both got the Malatang with spicy level one. The food came with a little stove to keep it hot. I think the food was alright. Most of the ingredients are quite basic. I have been to a Chinese mala noodle places. The food choices are pretty much the same. The food that is different is this place has (cheese) rice cakes, sausage, and spam. I didn't really get much Korean food flavor out of it and the broth is not as flavorful as the other place. Also there's not a lot of broth to begin with since the pot is quite shallow. I'm unsure if you can add extra broth like boiling point. It might be good to turn off the fire after it started boiling. read more

If you like MaLa Tang then this place is great! Unlike the one by the Lake Hills plaza, this place has a lot of room and different variety since it's more Korean. I would say if you order a 1 star, it's more like 3 stars for heat. They also have a side bar with different sauces! Def a fun experience for dining out! read more

If you've been to Malatang on the Ave then, this is similar but with a Korean twist on flavors. Came here with 4 ppl including me around 6pm. No line and lots of seats but 20-30 minutes in the restaurant filled quick for dinner service. Clean and casual restaurant situated in a little plaza shared with Gangnam Kbbq next door. Parking can get tight, so come early! Staff were respectful, kind and attentive. Food option selection was easy with lots of assortments. Tho they have a sauce bar i didn't think it was needed because the hotpot was already quite flavorful. I asked for a 3-star spicy for the original Malatang and am able to tolerate spicy well but it came out to be like a 5-star+ . However, it was so good I still ate it , but at a slower pace. My bf took one bite and said no more. My booty was on fire the next day tho haha. So be wary of their spice levels! We tried their rose malatang and jjajangmyeon. I think i liked the rose malatang the best. It was creamy and savory. The original would've been amazing had it not been so spicy. We also tried their guobaoru appetizers. The shrimp was my favorite. Affordable, super-yum, and fun. The staff is very helpful. You get a large plastic bowl from a stack, then choose your meats, vegetables and noodles from an impressive variety. Go to counter and choose your style (I chose dry pot) and spice level (I chose 1 -- the mildest). They cook it and bring it to you. Pay by the pound, about $18 per pound. When I went to the counter I was only at .6 pounds, and I had to go to some effort to let me pay for the minimum 1 pound. There's also a condiment bar with fresh garlic, chopped peanuts and other stuff. Flavors are superior. It's a little cafeteria-like with linoleum floors and bright lights. They don't rush you. We opted for Napa cabbage, bean sprouts, enoki mushroom, fish balls, lobster balls, kimchi dumplings, 2 kinds of noodles, spam, beef and they even had some seafood options! after you choose your ingredients, they weigh it and charge you by how much it weighs. (You can also add on rice or ramen.) Then you can choose how you want to eat it: option 1 is malatang (closest to a "soup" option) and options 2-4 are different flavors for stirfry. We did option 1 and for my mild spice girlies, the 3 level spice had me on the verge of fighting for my life- I could still eat it, but def had to take breaks and drink hellaaaa water. Next time, I'd probably do level 2 instead. The quality of ingredients were ok, but the concept is cool and I'd love to try one of the stirfry options next time. Came here for Sunday lunch. Overall I found it okay. I ordered the malatang. The broth tastes average but still good. The spiciness levels were great. Level 2 is like shin ramen. Level 3 is spicy but tolerable. Any higher would be too much for me. I liked the large selection of veggies and meat. I didn't really like how they cooked the beef though. It was dry and over cooked in my opinion. I assume they just dump the whole bowl in a pot and cooked it but each ingredient has a different cook time. That thin meat should only take five seconds to cook compared to all the veggies. I would likely not get the fresh meat next time and opt for the processed meat. Everything else was cooked fine. The pickled yellow radish tasted good, better than a lot of other korean restaurants in the area. I did not try any of the sauces. Gripes: 1. They should put food scales around the selection area so people know how much they are paying before getting to the register. 2. Sanitation in the food selection area. The tongs just lay in the food bins and there is no cover to protect the food. Dirty hands touching the handle of the tongs doesn't seem sanitary especially in the meat area (the handles did touch the food). There is hand sanitizer available but how many people are actually using it? One sneeze can cause a lot of contamination since there is no sneeze guard or cover.
