I do not recommend SOS Auto Repair in San Jose. My van's turn signal issue led me here. They first suggested I order a relay, which I did, but it didn't resolve the problem. After finally taking the van to their shop, they called three days later to say it was actually just a fuse, and the repair would be $280. Understanding the high cost for a fuse, I respectfully asked if they could include a basic oil change (which my van needed) in that $280 charge as a gesture of customer service. The owner, Mr. Arthur, flatly refused and was incredibly rude in the process. Charging $280 for a fuse replacement after giving incorrect initial advice is excessive. Combining that with terrible customer service and a greedy, dismissive attitude from the owner makes this an easy decision: avoid this shop at all costs. They are dishonest and do not value their customers. read more

I was going to buy a used car. Before closing the deal, I wanted to get a professional opinion on the car's condition. I brought it in to SOS Auto for an inspection. For $180, they did a thorough mechanical inspection. I mean THOROUGH! He checked everything. I was concerned about the frame and any possible hidden damage from previous accidents. That turned out to be fine. However, there were a lot of other issues that I didn't even think about: suspension, engine, cooling system, and on and on. He found and photographed cracks in joints and boots. Etc. Etc. Etc. Had I purchased that car, it would be a money pit. SOS saved me from making an expensive mistake. A $5k car would end up with $10k of repairs over the next year. Recommendation: If you are considering buying a used car, definitely get a professional opinion. Excellent customer service. If a part is ordered and not used, they send it back, no charge to customer. Excellent attention to detail. My wipers were in terrible shape. I brought in some I bought at Costco, and shazam, they were installed immediately. Never worry about overcharging. If anything, they charge too little. Went to SOS as a drive by. My car was showing some warning lights so I thought that would be a good local place to have it checked. Evelyn was very welcoming on the phone which made me feel more secure. She told me it would be $280 for a diagnostic check. They checked my car fully and there was nothing wrong except they hybrid battery was low. I told her I would be in the morning to pay and she said NO CHARGE! Amazing!! Can't find that anymore! My car wouldn't start and I saw the good review and decided to give them a try, people were nice started with little under 800 but they gave me discount to 650, keep in mind 288 analysts cost, and later they called me saying flex plate is broken so they need to remove transmission and it's going to cost 2900 ! My car is about 5000 dollars. So I paid 288 dollars even tho that analysts is no good with me, I tow it to other shop. They quote 650 flat and fix it within 24 hours. read more

Compared to the relatively expensive diagnostics at SOS, the Brokaw AAA auto place is dramatically less expensive and has an EIGHTEEN month warranty and I have experienced more professional techs there. I stand by my superior experience with AAA. Especially since I just had _another_ good experience there. They aren't cheap either! But they don't impose the $200+ diagnostic fee. They don't need to. Yes, SOS have plenty of good reviews, but I simply had a bad experience there: AAA diagnosed the electrical problem quickly and straitforwardly and without an expensive diagnostic fee. And, with an 18-month warranty. AAA located the parasitic-electrical drain quickly, and demonstrated that, and the need for their particular solution. Also, the AAA staff were professional, and could rationally /calmly/logicly discuss their business practices without going ballistic when someone dared to criticise. SOS!!! Returned my missed call within the hour to set up a drop-in appointment for my '01 Honda. I showed Art my problem having white smoke come through the coolant area. Art was very direct and showed me the crack in the radiator and other leaks. He did a full radiator replacement which included a new thermostat & gasket and coolant at a reasonable rate. I took my car in to get it checked since it was overheating and I needed to get a leak checked out. I got there right when it opened and they were able to take my car right away and take a look. Although my car results were not good, they didn't charge me for them to look at it and tell me the problem. Whatever you expect from a neighborhood car service center, SOS auto repair has that. I went there for a "false noise alarm" for my Town and Country which was coming for past few weeks and they were very professional , right from scheduling to fixing the issue. They examined everything and could not find the root cause and eventually my car noise got auto-disappeared after i went there (may be my car was looking for some midas touch) . Great part - they did not even charge any money for that as in there language they did not fix anything , they just disassembled and assembled it back.. There approach is very pro, i feel confident as soon as I walk-in there (though it looks little odd from roadside view though) - I am so glad that I have this repair center in my neighborhood and I will be going there for all my future repairs. read more

Sloppy and unprofessional. A month after I got an oil change, my engine knocked... they reported no leaking or oil burning... and they lost my oil monitoring sensor. They even accused me of tampering with it. Very large emphasis on the accusation. Only Capitol Mazda has done service on the car. Oil was never changed by m The lady who runs the office was extremely condescending and inconsistent. Taken two cars there, and they recommended more work be done, and promised to email invoices for what they could do and what it would cost. Neither time did they follow through. They also took four hours when we took an SUV in to change the oil... after promising an hour and a half tops. Not sure what mechanic loses an oil sensor, but would not trust. Would give zero stars if possible. Extremely disappointed I had to suddenly get a new car after unexpectedly running out of oil, all because they disconnected/lost the sensor. read more

I brought my car to have the front suspension looked at to solve a clanking problem. Staff was very friendly, got me in the following day, and were able to quickly diagnose and fix the problem. I feel so blessed to have found out about this place! I asked a car-guy friend of mine if he knew anywhere and he referred me here. They are super fast and do excellent work. It's great how detailed the paperwork they give you is, it really breaks down all the work and part costs. I was really impressed with the service. They did an oil change and it was about a half hour! Set an appointment though :) I didn't realize I could do that and just walked right in.. It's a small Mom n Pop type place, its really a great and quiet environment. So usually it's fair to expect to pay more than your estimate when all is said and done, but never have I had to pay LESS than what was quoted to me. It's such a relief lol and that's what happened for me at SOS. Lastly, I noticed they wiped my tires when I passed my car to pay. I did not noticed they also cleaned the bird POOP that was on my mirriors lol.. the birds like to look at themselves in my mirriors and make a huge mess. Guys if you're reading I am so sorry about that!! The car was sitting for days :( that is top notch attention and customer care. This is the best place I have ever brought my car to have work done.
