Could I even put into words the wonderful experience I had at SOS Counter? It's so amazing that it's almost indescribable!
Just imagine walking into the lobby of an office building on the southeast corner of Cool Springs Boulevard and Carothers Parkway, making a left in search of what feels like a top-secret sandwich shop masquerading as a bakery. The word has started to get out regarding Williamson County's greatest hidden gem. You enter this beautifully clean, gleaming space with a counter and a few tables, the attached spotless kitchen just to your left.
Your eyes scour the beautiful looking pastries behind glass, marvelous creations from pastry chef Jessica Chow. An extensive menu created by Michaella Zetts and her husband lists delicious sandwiches, sourdough breads, other classic American fare, and soft-serve ice cream. Shelves contain freshly shaved deli meats, cookie dough, eight or nine different flavors of gourmet butter, and Dr. Brown's sodas including root beer and cream soda, two of my favorites! Everything is made from scratch right down to the mayonnaise, the relish, and the pastry frostings. Fries and chips are made on the spot in beef tallow! You can see that every little meticulous detail maximizes the potential of each dish.
And I haven't even gotten to my favorite part! After selecting the Italian hoagie for lunch, accomplished chef Ryder Zetts is in the kitchen making my sandwich, emerging soon to hand it directly to me. Did you catch that? A well-known chef who once worked at French Laundry, one of the rare triple-Michelin-starred restaurants in the U.S., the same chef who engineered brilliant dishes at Nashville's Optimist for years, is handing you a perfectly made sandwich that he just crafted with his own hands! Are you kidding me? For foodies like me, this might as well be the Super Bowl of culinary experiences! I feel like this experience should cost $130 instead of $13!
And it's the best darn sandwich I've ever had! Chewy Dutch bread with crunchy edges surrounds the freshest prosciutto, capicola, and salami! Fresh, shredded lettuce complements every bite. But the house-made giardiniera is what takes this to the next level. And it isn't the spicy version of this popular Italian relish. It's a perfectly balanced condiment everyone would enjoy that almost has subtle Asian overtones, creating such a wonderful harmonious union with the sandwich. It's a masterpiece that only someone like Chef Zetts could pull off.
I took a loaf of rosemary sourdough to go and sampled a little at home. It was absolute perfection. I also devoured the cinnamon pastry with cream cheese frosting and hints of lemon zest that I'd purchased to surprise my wife. We won't mention that to her and I'll return to buy her a replacement pastry. And all of this is at your fingertips hiding in plain site in the Cool Springs area.
