I arrived right as they were opening at 8 am and immediately loved the parking lot and plentiful seating inside. They also have some outside seating. Ann Arbor seems to have quite a few of these cafe/bar combination concepts so I think this spot turns into a bar in the evening. I ordered the Sammy's best (bacon, egg, spinach, tomato, swiss, and garlic aioli) on an asiago bagel as well as an oat milk latte. They brought my order out to my table when it was ready. The wifi was super fast and I was able to get quite a bit of work done. The bagel sandwich was super tasty and the asiago bagel was the cheesiest I've had in awhile! The garlic aioli gave it a bit of a zip and I really enjoyed this. The latte was smooth and creamy, not the best I've ever had, but it did the trick. I'm so glad I gave this spot a chance and will definitely be back the next time I'm in town. It was getting pretty busy by 9 am, so get there early if you'd like a table.

Something like kimchi or gochujang, or perhaps a spicy mayo or aioli it needs something to take it to the next level. I have no issue with using ground beef instead of ribeye which is traditionally used for beef bulgogi. They would probably have to charge $10 a bun instead of $5 a bun given today's beef prices. The cherry almond was very good we got it at half price probably sitting for a day or two but given the half price I understand, given the bread is not a soft compared to a fresh bun. I have no doubt this would be amazing if you bought the same day. My favorite was the Ube doughnut an absolute perfect treat. Overall a solid place to grab a bite, next time I would like to try their bulgolgi breakfast sandwich. To drink ordered a hot vanilla black tea which had good flavor. With that being said, my hot take has always been that millennials make some of the best coffee. I tried the miso caramel hot latte with oat milk, the honey matcha, and a mango lemonade, all of which turned out delicious! The miso caramel had a deep rich miso flavor which complimented the caramel so well. Though I probably wouldn't order it again because it wasn't quite my preferred sweetness for that flavor combo, I still admired the ingenious of the flavor combo and really enjoyed it once I added a little extra sugar. The honey matcha was very good and I like the subtle sweetness that the honey gave the matcha. I could tell that their grade of matcha wasn't the best but they made up for it in technique and flavoring. The mango lemonade was a sweet pick me up and I really enjoyed the fresh mango taste. For food, I tried their lox bagel and I will admit, it wasn't my favorite lox bagel I've had. I could tell everything was fresh and I did enjoy it to a degree, but it tasted very heavily pickley and wished it leaned more into the classic lox and caper bagel I prefer. I also didn't prefer paying 16 + tax for it and definitely won't be doing that again. Despite that, I don't think it deserves a removal of a star because it was still made well, it just wasn't for me. Though I'm a gen-Z and the brutalist style lacks the whimsy I so desperately (and totally not performatively) crave, I still appreciate that it cleans and there is so much space to study if necessary. Now this latte isn't sweet, so if you are looking for sweet, this won't be the drink for you. I had my hubs try it out and said he could taste espresso with an aftertaste of the grains- not something he would order, himself. But I'm definitely going to! He ordered the pistachio latte and I could tell it's very different from other ps's I've had from Monday Coffee Club or from Yemeni coffee houses. It definitely has that light, Korean, nutty taste that isn't strong. The baked goodie, I'm happy to say, has expanded and they offer so much more than they did since my last review. Well this is embarrassing. It took a friend visiting from out of town to learn that Bird Dog Baking…read morehad a permanent home on a prominent corner of Ypsi... for years. Even worse, it's amazing. And I'm not one to gush over bakeries. And this bakery does it all. Naturally leavened breads, sweet pastries, savory baked goods, and great coffee all in a clean, well lit, charming, and friendly space. While I have had BDB's rye teacake at Argus in the past, I had not delved deeply into their full line of products. This changed last week when I popped in and fell in love with their buckwheat financier, spelt scone with braised collards, cheddar, and bacon, and their Ypsi sour loaf. Here's the bottom line: the flavors and textures are just freaking fabulous. Across the board. Financiers, scones, and bread all share the same praise. Remarkable crunchy crusts, juxtaposed with tender interiors, and flavor that just goes on and on. Brand new fan. Well worth the drive out to Ypsi. I think I found my new favorite hangout with those big big windows, easy weekday parking, and free wifi. My hope is to get there early enough sometime to get a hot baguette out of the oven, or some other loaf when it is still warm. Hot bread and good butter is the best food combination on Earth. I'm ready to throw down in defense of those words. I suspect when I get that timing figured out, Bird Dog Baking might be able to squeeze its way into the top spot of my greatest culinary experience of all time. But I'm a simple man, with simple tastes... even if I have almost impossibly high standards.
