I ordered through door dash & went w/ the create a bowl option.Chicken wings, Mac & cheese, candied yams,& mixed veggies.I was totally disappointed in my food. It was like swimming in swamp water. It looked like the person who prepped my food threw the veggies in w/ so much juice you thought they were baptizing it. The mixed veggies l(red pepper, broccoli,& carrots) were so soggy & mushy I thought I was eating baby food. The massive amount of juice made everything soggy. I literally had to drain out the excess liquid from my bowl. The wings were tiny baby wings(very small portion) I thought I was eating pigeon. The mac & cheese & candied yams were the only sides that tried to save the day. The mac & cheese was cheesing & the candied yams were candying. I sampled my cousin's bowl & it had a massive amount of veggie juice as well. Her chicken bites were soggier than cereal left overnight . The collard greens had a good flavor but it had no meat whatsoever in it just greens. Just sad, lonely greens looking for ham hock, bacon,or turkey neck. Idk, if the person on the receipt Allison C. created our bowls or if she was just the cashier. Please drain the veggies or take it easy on the juice. My bowl was completely ruined b/c of that. I was so sad b/c I've been wanting to eat @ this place for a while. I was around the way so I gave it a try. I wanted soul food not soup.

Good location with off street parking. Totally take-out establishment. The cashier didn't offer a warm welcome but the food made up for it. The portion was huge, I actually shared with my coworker. I enjoyed the chicken and I chose mac and cheese and yams. I look forward to trying it again

Was visiting from Cali and wanted something authentic from the city. Found this hidden jewel and it did not disappoint. It was pretty packed and there was a bit of a wait but it was so worth it. Everything was on point. The soul rice was on point, the greens were succulent, the krack Mac delivered, and the shrimp was cooked to perfection. Staff was super friendly and offered us a refund after a couple of our orders were lost but it was bomb af. They have a good vibe here and I wish them nothing but prosperity and an abundance of favor and overflow. In Jesus Name.

My daughter wanted to visit Soul Bowls so we decided to try it out. They have two locations but we decided to go the first one that opened originally. This location we went to was a small store and had pick up service only. As we arrived, the line was out the door and I was pretty excited because with a line like that, the food must be delicious. We ordered are food and it took about twenty minutes to be finished which I'm okay with waiting. We ordered the Soul Bowl with Rice, Collard Greens, Sweet Potatoes, and Chicken Bites. Also we ordered the Soul Roll with Macaroni and Cheese and Sweet Potatoes, Plantain's, and a side of Krack and Cheese. As I opened the side of Krack and Cheese, the container was full of oil and the Macaroni and Cheese needed some seasoning. The Macaroni and Cheese did have a nice cheese pull but it just lacked flavor. The Soul Roll was okay but again the Macaroni and Cheese inside lacked flavor and in my opinion the Sweet Potatoes were missing a sweetness, maybe some Brown Sugar. The Collard Greens were okay. They were missing some type of vinegar, meat, and it also lacked flavor. The Chicken in Soul Bowl was good and fried good but was on the dry side. We were expecting the Plantain's to be the sweet Plantain's but they were more like Tostones. I was bite disappointed because this is the original store and I've heard so much good things about the food. Would I come back again? Maybe but I would try their newer location to compare the two and the customer service was okay.

I have been dying to come here for some time now!! I made my own bowl with soup rice, krack mac n cheese, yam, and chicken bites. I also got a soul roll and it was so delicious! I finished my bowl wanting more. The paintings on the walls were incredible and the staff was so friendly. I can't wait to go back for the steak bites! Craving them right now!!

Soul bowls 860 has had a huge buzz around Hartford. It's soul food, so of course I had to pull up to wethersfield ave. The line wasn't out the door, but the wait for my food was about 25 mins. The menu mainly focuses on bowls, the comfort food version of chipotle. I got 2 soul rolls (a fried egg roll with Mac and cheese and yams) , a soul bowl with veggies, sautéed shrimp, mac, and their yams. Everything hit and the bowl was well packed. I liked that the soul rolls weren't too greasy as well. Looking forward to visiting them again when the lines die down. They're going to offer delivery and call ahead services sometime in April. Would also love it if they added grilled chicken to the menu for us folks looking to stay away from fried foods.

I appreciate the candied yams not being overly sweet. They paired well with the mac&cheese and collard greens. My least favorite thing on the plate had to be the chicken, unfortunately. The flavor was lacking but the crunch was good. What wasn't great about my visit was the fact that it took 3 hours from start to finish. I sat down at my table at 7:20 and didn't leave until 10:40 due to slow service. With the special you get a salad, a soul food plate, and dessert. The salad was great but was clearly from a bag... so I was confused on why it took 30 minutes to come out. From there, our server came over 30 minutes later to tell us the food would take a while because everyone in the place ordered at the same time. Our plates unfortunately didn't come out until 9:15. From there it was an exhausting task of trying to track down our server to get our dessert to go. No other servers wanted to help us which was actually so nerve-wracking. Since Frenchie's is new and easily accessible, I would possibly return but not until something is done about their service. Usually I'm pretty laid back but I was also sat next to a blaring speaker where I couldn't even hear who was across from me. Overall, the visit was disappointing.

I was most excited to try this place out because it's been vacant for so long and I've seen the sign for a while and awaiting their opening. After hearing about a friend's experience, I convinced a couple others to make it over the next day they'd be open which was today, Monday. I looked it up and made reservations on Open Table. Today's the "Monday" and after getting off work.. waited an hour with friends who worked nearby, walked over to the establishment... I didn't even make it past the foyer despite having a reservation for 6p. We opened the door to the foyer and waited because that's where the host stand was. Assuming the inner door was locked which it actually was because a staff eventually unlocked the inner door. She didn't quite greet us, instead, she said that they won't be taking any orders until 7:30p because the kitchen hasn't opened yet. She also stood between the door and it felt like we were not even allowed in. She shut the door and conversed with her boss, offering us either to wait or get some kind of discount another time. I'm thankful for them trying to rectify the issue since I've already waited for them to open. I preferred to dine so we left. Also, I'm at a loss if I'll get penalized for the reservation I made on Open Table. She assured me I wouldn't be. She didn't take my name though I don't know about that. The entire thing was so disappointing. Their hours stated a 6p opening. There isn't a website for more information either. There is an instagram page and I wouldn't have known it was the same place if not for the address on the bio. The hours are mostly evenings only between Fridays-Mondays. It isn't posted on the door and again, information isn't clear. I'm not all too keen on coming back..

Although I don't typically dine out for soul food, my water was shut off due to maintenance on the outside pipes. Since it was Sunday and I usually cook Sunday dinner, I chose to visit Sandra's after hearing such high praise and wanting to try their menu. Upon arrival, I realized it doesn't particularly stand out, but there is a menu outside to review before entering. The restaurant is small, predominantly a takeout spot. I ordered the Pork Chop dinner, with sides of Collard Greens and Macaroni and Cheese. My son had the Ribs with Macaroni and Cheese and Rice, and my daughter selected the Fried Chicken, Macaroni and Cheese, and Collard Greens. I also picked up a side of Sweet Potatoes and Fried Fish. The Fried Fish was underwhelming in flavor, with a slimy breading. I prefer my fish fried until very crispy, and although it looked crispy, it needed a bit more time. The Sweet Potatoes were good but could benefit from a touch more sweetness. When I opened my Pork Chop dinner, I was surprised to find only one pork chop, especially given that the dinner costs twenty dollars and pork is typically an affordable meat. I would expect two pork chops for that price. The Mac and Cheese was decent--cooked well but lacking the deep, savory richness I seek. The Collard Greens, however, were excellent; cooked perfectly and absorbed the rich flavors of their broth and seasonings. My children found the food to be okay, rating it around 2.5 to 3 stars. There is also a refrigerator with desserts and homemade juice drinks. Overall, the staff and environment were friendly.

Their dress code is pretty much club wear, even in January. They are a bit more forgiving in the winter, because coats/not many people will wear stilettos with snow on the ground, but I saw plenty of bodycon dresses and jean/blazer/dress shoe combos on the men. It looks small from the outside but it's pretty spacious, there are a selection of small tables and white club couches in the front where the bar is, two unisex restrooms (which got SUPER filthy because people apparently don't know how to handle their liquor at 2pm on a Sunday) and then the back with the larger group tables and the "VIP" section with more white club couches. The music is pretty good, they play everything under the sun from the diaspora: Hiplife/Afro-beats, hip-hop/rap (mostly trap), R&B, reggae, even gospel and hip-hop remixes of gospel music. However, It is L O U D. As in, you can barely hear the person next to you without leaning uncomfortably close. As in, more than a few hair cells in your ears got damaged after dining here. As in, you can hear the party from down the block. I was genuinely surprised this place got zoned in residential neighborhood. Luckily, the food makes up for it. We had several things from their brunch menu (chicken and waffles, omelets, lobster mac and cheese, wings and fries, fish and chips, fish and grits, bottomless mimosas) and every item was a hit, no one left unsatisfied. Many people left with take away plates, so the portions are pretty generous. The prices are reasonable ($12-16/plate). As for vegan options, there are fries and a side of strawberries (sometimes you just have to make a meal of sides, ha). The fries were crispy and perfectly salted. I would have them again. If you are strict about cross contamination I probably wouldn't come here but I mean, you CAN eat. Would *I* come back again, probably not. It is inside an old house of some sort, so it has a charming ambiance. They have a small parking lot so the spaces are a bit tight. Then, although we were on time for our 8:15pm reservation, we found out that they didn't have a table for us on the main floor, which is bad because my parents have mobility issues and cannot climb stairs. They asked us if we would be ok waiting five or ten minutes. Sure, that was fine we said. The host was very reassuring and he let us know that the corner table near the fireplace was finishing up and he'd get it bussed promptly. So that was good. But after we sat down we experienced service issues. Many items were unavailable. No orrechiete. No crab cakes. No sirloin special. It was weird. We hadn't arrived that late, on a Saturday night, how could so many dishes be sold out/unavailable? We ended up going with the scotch egg $11 and butternut squash arancini balls $12 for appetizers, which were both great. The scotch egg was a decent size and came with a mini salad. The arancini balls were small, but the truffle gorgonzola fontina cheese filling was really nice. Entrees were not bad. My Berkshire pork chop cooked medium was tender enough and had decent flavor. My Dad's veal ribs over mac and cheese were really good. My Mom's wagyu burger was tasty and my sister's salad was satisfactory. However the cost of the additional protein to the salad seems high (Grilled Chicken +14 / Seared Salmon +16/ Grilled Shrimp +21 / Churrasco Steak +24). The drinks were well made, but took a while to get to us. The "Charles... In Charge!" with old forester bourbon, montenegro, spiced cherry bitters, luxardo $15 was a hit. My Dad enjoyed his $17 Manhattan made with Angel's Envy bourbon. My $11 FreeBird mocktail was refreshing. Yet, throughout the night we found it difficult to get our server's attention. All four dishes did not arrive simultaneously. We had to flag someone down for more silverware after the appetizers were cleared. Right at the end when we were ready to pay, she got tied up listening to a couple at a neighboring table tell her a story or something. This must have been quite a yarn because she was totally enrapt and oblivious to our needs. We started wondering whether our table was actually her responsibility or not. Finally she came by and we let her know we were done, no dessert or after dinner drinks, just the check and a few boxes for takeout please. This was a new restaurant that we hadn't tried before, and maybe I took a risk by booking it for my Dad's 89th birthday, which was supposed to be special. Our experience was okay, and maybe we'd go again in the future, but there were too many more ups and downs this evening than I would have liked for a special occasion. I am rounding up to four stars overall, even though on this particular evening I didn't think each individual component met that mark exactly.
