City Kebab is a Middle Eastern kebab restaurant that opened in Hartford, Connecticut in September 2023. It was founded by husband and wife Uzbek immigrants Timur Rakhimov and Aziza Djalmamedova. The couple immigrated to the United States from Uzbekistan in 2010. After over a decade of education, training, and hard work, they decided to try their luck as restaurateurs. They found a space that used to be home to Hook & Ladder Restaurant (right next to Hartford Fire Department's historic South Green Station). The couple hired Turkish immigrant Hasan Korkmaz as their head chef. Together, they curated a menu full of traditional Turkish and Uzbek cuisine that is all prepared in accordance with halal dietary laws. Some of the menu items include kebabs, samsas, falafel, gyro, and mezzo platters. I recently dined at City Kebab while I was in Hartford to see a concert. I checked Yelp to see if there was anywhere good to grab dinner before the show, and Middle Eastern/Mediterranean cuisine sounded fantastic to me. When I entered, I was greeted by the very friendly co-owner Timur, who said, "I work for my wife. She's the real boss." After being seated, I began to look over the menu. When Timur returned, he tried to recommend that I get gyro. I told him, "Oh no. I know exactly what I want. I'd like to order a variety of small plates to sample. I'm a local food blogger and I want an authentic experience." Timur was just ecstatic and quickly went to give my order to the kitchen staff. I started off first with a small "Mixed Cold Appetizer" (combo of hummus, babganush, haydari, soslu patlican, antep ezme, avocado ezme), the "Falafel" (mixture of chickpeas, parsley, onions, garlic, Middle Eastern spices, deep fried) and a small teapot of "Turkish Black Tea". Timur brought me some complimentary "Ramazan Pidesi" (Turkish Bread) as well as a glass of "Fresh Squeezed Lemonade". He said, "You need to try this!" So far, everything was excellent! For the main course, I had the "Mixed Grill" (mixture of chicken shish, beef shish, kofte, lamb adana, beef & lamb gyro, served w/ white rice, bulgur rice, Mediterranean salad). It was a symphony of Mediterranean flavors! Timur surprised me with a "Pumpkin Samsa" (pumpkin filling in crispy pastry, seasoned with spices, served w/ tomato sauce) and said, "You can't leave without trying this. It's an Uzbek specialty!" It was very tasty! Before the meal was over, he said, "Save some room. I have another surprise for you at the end." He brought me "Künefe with Dondurma" (Turkish ice cream). I had never tried this before. Stuffed with melted mozzarella and then topped with pistachio and almond crumbles, it was simply divine! I repeatedly thanked Timur for his hospitality and for sharing his culinary cultural traditions with me. I had enough leftovers for both my wife and I to have for dinner the following evening. If you find yourself in the Hartford area, this place is an absolute must-visit. The food was exceptional - everything was incredibly fresh and perfectly seasoned. They make all their breads, sauces, and dips by hand, which truly enhances the dining experience. We started with the mixed cold appetizer, and it was the highlight of our evening - a variety of fresh hummuses and dips served with their delicious homemade bread (highly recommended!). This cozy restaurant is located in a convenient spot just a bit south of downtown Hartford. I treated myself to a Greek salad, bold Turkish hot tea, and a chicken kebab platter to go. Everything was fresh, bright and full of flavor. That Greek salad was wow wow wow. The lighting fixtures, the floors, and everything else you see are absolutely gorgeous. This spot is right by where I work and after sampling their food at this past year's Hartford Taste - I have gotten take out from them several times. I have not had dinner at this location so can only speak to the lunch - but the portions are perfect and the combo meal even comes with a mini dessert to end the meal. As with Zohara - City Kebob shines with their dip platter which is the perfect sharable platter if dining with a friend. read more

A beautiful restaurant on Main Street in downtown Hartford. A group of 7 enjoyed incredible Turkish food before seeing a show at the Bushnell, just 3 blocks away. Free parking in back of resturant on John Street. We had cold appetizer platter with a taste of dips -- hummous, eggplant and more. with fresh spicy bread for dipping. Dinners including kebabs of all kinds -- main dishes include side salad and rice. Everything was seasoned perfectlyl. Owner/server treated us with tea and cake on the house to top off our meal. This is a hidden gem. Similar food and quality to Zohara. If you haven't been there, it is excellent. The Mixed Cold Appetizer is a must have, it is a sample of pita and dips. The deserts are to die for. This is my go to place for desserts, especially when I need to bring something quick to parties. They have baclava, cheesecake and other Turkish treats like Magnoliya, Kunefe, and Sutlac. It's BYOB so you can save on alcohol and bring what you want. The ambiance is great, in an old building with beautiful lighting and Turkish artwork on the walls. Service is quick and attentive and they go the extra mile to make things right if needed. read more

Delicious and quick, dips were incredible. We were running after a show, and they still got us through quickly without feeling rushed.

I wanted to love this spot since it's conveniently located but maybe I went on an off day. I was meeting a friend who was already there and when I walked in I was greeted with a stare instead of a hello. Once with my friend, service was timely (brought out water right away) but not too attentive. I will admit I drink a lot of water when I'm out but I found myself reaching for my empty water glass a few too many times. They use very tiny cups so I asked the waitress to leave the pitcher eventually because it got to a point where I think we might've both been a little annoyed. To eat, we shared hummus, burek, and a chicken lamb and beef shawarma plate. I wasn't a fan of the bread they provided but with the hummus it was okay. I didn't like the burek. I've only had this dish a couple times before and it's been served with a soft dough whereas City Kebab serves burek as a flaky roll. It was too messy and dry for my liking. The shawarma was okay as well. No flavors stood out to me. Overall, I don't think I'll return. read more

My family met a few friends for dinner last night at City Kebab House. A fairly new restaurant to downtown Hartford. We were able to find parking on the road, right in front of the restaurant. The beautiful exterior and the brightly lit welcoming interior were a good sign of what was to come. First to arrive, we were taken past the dessert case to our tables by the window. The dining area was spacious with plenty of seating for patrons. There was a large party seated at the back in what appeared as a private area. The owners were friendly and greeted us upon entering. We were served water and given our menus while we waited. There are many Turkish and Uzbek offerings. Some items were familiar, while my friends had to explain a few to us. We started with a large Tabuleh salad, at $16 it could've fed multiple people, but my husband and I shared a devoured the whole thing. The bread basket that was brought to our table was enjoyed with the salad. I also tried the Uzbek Samsa, a ground beef and onion mixture in a crispy pastry. These were good night and enjoyed as breakfast the next morning. I ordered the Shrimp Shish which came with rice, pilaf and salad. My husband had the Lamb Adana & Inegol Kofte. Our son had the Chicken Fingers from the children's menu. Our friends had the Uzbek Manti, the Uzbek Plov, and a mixer platter. We finished our meals with Turkish Tea and Baklava. Everything was wonderful. We were happy not to be rushed out and to continue our conversation and visit. read more

If anyone asked me how to describe City Kebab House, I'd say it's delicious, fresh, and addicting! Not only are the owners incredibly charismatic and kind, but the food is delicious. We always order one of the meat combos, a side of falafel, their dumplings, their delicious hibiscus lemonade, and apricot juice. For dessert? ALWAYS get the kunefe here. It is crispy, cheesy, and DELICIOUS. It's my favorite spot in Hartford. Highly recommend to everyone. :) read more

The owner (who was very friendly) came to our table to greet us, and to answer my numerous questions about the items on the menu. Complimentary bread & butter that were very tasty I got a combination platter with chicken shish and a lamb kabob. The restaurant is so well done not only the food,but the decor was so inviting and warm and clean!
