I am a big fan of sweet and savory mixed brunch places (ex: order eggs but instead of bread, you can sub with pancakes as the side). Soul brew doesn't do that. The drinks menu is really vast - many flavors and combos. We didn't sample very "out there" flavors but I am curious about how some of the lattes would taste. I got a London Fog latte and they left the tea bag in the cup which I have never seen before and found odd (the volume of the drink was also much smaller considering they left the tea bag in. I will fully admit, I used to not be too crazy about Soul Brew. But after my last few visits, I will say, its quickly becoming one of my favorite places to get a flavored latte on Long Island. The last couple of times, I've sampled such flavors as Blueberry Mocha, White Chocolate Banana, and Rainbow Cookie, and all of them have been perfection. I usually opt for no whip but, if you do get whip, they make each latte aesthetically pleasing. Enough so you can take a pic for Insta and tag them (unfortunately I'm always in a rush to get a coffee before work so no pics to back up my claim lol). It is very convenient to place an order at the counter in back and pick up and go. And if you show up early in the morning, you may be able to have that classic coffee shop experience. Working on your laptop with coffee in tow, enjoying the music and light chatter in the background. However, around lunch time, even on weekdays, this place becomes packed! Once again, can't speak much for sit down dining, but ended up ordering the Avo Bella for delivery and that was so good. Even as someone who isn't so much into balsamic as others, it was such a luxurious styled breakfast that made my day. I will say, not everything on the menu was great. This continues to be an incredibly frustrating experience here. The host staff does not know how to properly seat tables and turnover tables. Tables that can sit 5+ people are given to two people and waits for 3 or more end up twice or three times as long as promised. The host staff never give proper wait times. The wait is so frustrating that by the time you get to the table youre already pissed off and cant enjoy your meal. Overall we were happy but were left slightly underwhelmed. -Avobella toast: 2.5, more bread than anything. Looked NOTHING like the insta photo. Just overall very bland, not a lot of actual avocado which was funny considering that's what the base of the meal is. -Feeling tot burrito: 4.5/5, this was VERY good. First few bites I was blown away but from the middle onward it was pretty much just all egg. Still very good (I added bacon). -French Fries & Home Fries: 2.5/5, both very bland. The home fries weren't crispy at all and had almost that raw potato texture and taste. The fries were also just bland and not really crispy at all. Overall, I will say that I really enjoyed the vibe this place has. Very laid back/artsy/casual and all around fun. Went to Soul Brew today for the first time because a friend had recommended it to me. Me and a friend had received our drinks which we both did not end up liking and were hoping to get something else we would have liked. The food was great but the service was not. After we received our food which came out as we both were in the restroom our server, Marilyn did not check up on us once. After waiting for thirty minutes hoping that she would come check on us we had to call her over after she had passed by our table multiple times . Looking at the check we realized we had been charged for three lattes which would of made sense if they had all been half way empty but we both had taken about two sips from them. When we told our server this she then proceeded to tell us that we drank most of it and thats why she charged us. She ended up taking the third drink off. I visited Soul Brew for lunch with a friend on a weekday, and it was pretty busy. There was a small bench area inside to wait for a table as we did have to wait for about 15-20 minutes. We both had the chicken salad sandwich. It was really good, but we were surprised by the little spicy kick it had. The yummy sourdough bread had a nice crisp to it without being very greasy. We also got the tater tots, which were tasty. I am a huge fan of a Chai Tea Latte, so I ordered theirs. Soooo good. I STILL cannot get the thought of it out of my head! It was really so delicious. I've spent the last week or so doing a little Soul Brew searching. What do I mean exactly? Well my mind has been split between a three and four star review (3 1/2 anyone? Yelp? Anyone?). As you've already noticed before even reading a word, I went south to three. The question now is...why? Well, the original reason my girlfriend and I decided to head up to St. James for breakfast a few Sundays ago was due to the insanely intriguing rainbow cookie pancakes (plus the coffee options sounded scrumptious). Upon arrival around 10:00 AM, there was a 35 minute wait to sit. Totally understandable with the tiny space and scaled back seating. Instead of putting some extra time onto our semi-busy day, we chose to get grub (and coffee) to go and so we went to the register to do just that. Here's where the three star reasoning begins to trickle in. First off, this take out area is really meant more for coffee than food (despite ordering to-go being an option). You can tell because no food menu could be found. Luckily, my girlfriend knew exactly what she wanted: a rainbow cookie iced latte and the rainbow cookie pancakes (rainbow much?). For me, I had seen the specials on Instagram and figured I'd try one, but unluckily for me, I didn't have the ability to quickly skim the rest of the menu just to be sure. Yes, I could have asked for a menu or even researched a little more prior to coming, but as my mother would say, it's the principle. There should've been a menu posted, but even so, I figured out my choices and went with a peanut butter cup iced latte and the special of breakfast chorizo tacos. Once ordered, we were handed a beeper and (after asking to be sure) were told we could wait on the side for our drinks which were ready after about five minutes. While waiting, we noticed a ton of takeout orders and the bustling of employees behind the counter as Soul Brew definitely has a following in food and drink circles. The cute coffee shop decor and chill vibes made the place seem friendly enough, though after receiving our drinks, we decided instead of somewhat awkwardly standing in the middle of the restaurant that we'd wait in the car for our food. Remember, we had that beeper.....more on that shortly. Back at the car I took my first sip of my peanut butter latte...then another...one more for good measure. Occasionally feeling like my tastebuds might still be a little off at times, I asked my GF to try it and her first words were "It's good but it doesn't taste like peanut butter." My thoughts exactly. The iced latte and whipped cream aspects worked well, but whatever syrups or anything else they put in lacked any peanut butter cup punch I've tried with other coffees that enter this nutty realm. That's strike two (if you're keeping score). Had it not been for this upcoming final factor, four stars would've been easy to reach. I say this as I'll quickly leapfrog the negative moment to get to eating our breakfast (in the nearby Avalon Park). My lady's pancakes were amazing. Light, fluffy, creamy and just what they were broadcasted to be. My chorizo tacos were pretty tasty as well (even if the chorizo wasn't amazing) as fresh avocado and salsa, along with a heaping helping of flavorful potatoes on the side, really rounded out the meal. Well, maybe that meal would still be sitting there had I not gone back inside because we waited over 30 minutes for our food with buzzer in hand as that little red light blinked in anticipation of it fully buzzing. But no. No buzz. And so I returned inside to see what was up. Yes, it was busy that morning and of course making food from scratch takes time, but I was livid-level angry when I walked back in to find our bag sitting on the counter. Seriously? How long was it there for? The food was still very hot so perhaps the timing was just so perfectly off in that I walked back in right before they were going to buzz me, but no one said anything about that. I just quickly stated that I'm Josh and my buzzer didn't go off, placed it on the counter, and walked out with steam shooting from my ears. Overall, a lot of this sounds like bad timing and maybe even a little bit of not opening my mouth at the right moment. Though I won't fault myself for my lackluster latte and even if it didn't leave a bad taste in my mouth, this experience did. Hey, Soul Brew, everyone has off days and sometimes things just fall the wrong way for a customer. That Sunday it was for me and my girlfriend. There's plenty to love about this place and a return trip is totally possible, but maybe next time we'll just wait to sit or if anything, wait inside for our food just to be sure. How did I not know about this place until now? It's so adorable inside. So local and authentic. Smells like fresh coffee when you walk in. Felt super safe with the spacing and all staff was wearing masks. Came with my friend for a lunch date. Each of us got rainbow cookie lattes. AH-MA-ZING. I got the almond butter banana toast. Visit Date: February 8, 2021 I booked a tattoo appointment after a consultation and my friends who are moving to Smithtown suggested I visit Soul Brew. So I popped in for a peanut butter latte. The latte was pretty good, got it done with oat milk. I had a minor PTSD moment with almond milk (don't ask) so now I've been opting to have drinks made with oat milk but I'm only screwing myself because oat milk is more calories than almond milk. I ordered four food items: avocado toast, a short stack of pancakes, a bagel, and a waffle. The avocado toast was awesome, the pancakes were awesome, but the waffle was dry and thick. The bagel was alright, not great but they forgot the butter for my bagel which didn't help. The coffees I ordered, an Americano and flat white were both good but not amazing. I've driven past here a lot and have always meant to stop in....today was the day! This place is not massive, but as soon as I walked in, was greeted by somebody back by the coffee bar and told to pick wherever we wanted to sit. There was a four top for me and my two kids to sit down for breakfast. Within minutes, a young waitress appears with three waters, which we really appreciated, since we had all just been biking on a really hot morning. The waitress took our drink orders, came back with those quick, then took our breakfast order. My daughter got the rainbow cookie pancakes. My son got the waffle with a side of chocolate chips. I just got the traditional Soul Brew breakfast, which was three eggs, home fries, sourdough toast, and I asked for a side of bacon. The only thing that does irk me is the charging for the side of bacon on a traditional breakfast, but the charge for the breakfast isn't that bad to begin with. I think they should just include it and give you and option on what to choose...ham, bacon, sausage, etc....but that's just me being nitpicky. Also, the coffee selection here is massive. I looked at both the menu on the boards and the one handed to me at my table. I started with just a mocha latte, which came in a huge mug and tasted DELICIOUS. Something about drinking it out of ceramic mug instead of a cardboard cup really makes a difference. Not long after that, our food came out. Presentation is done very well. This isn't like a diner where the food just gets crammed on your plate. They do give it SOME thought here. My daughter dove in to her pancake, my son did the same with his waffle, and I loved my breakfast. We all agreed that this was a great breakfast experience for sure. The waitress came over to ensure our food was ok and we had everything we needed. Service was on point for sure. Before I got my check, I had noticed people coming in and taking carry out with them......along with the carry out, I see a myriad of blended coffees with whipped cream and chocolate drizzles, etc. I had to have one to go. I've debated a long time about writing this review, but here we are. I used to go to Soul Brew about 2 times a week for the past year. One major thing for me is that it's a coffee house, not like Starbucks or Dunkin - and I'm the kind of person who travels out of their way for that experience. However, I have a major complaint about the consistency of the food and coffee. It's about 50/50. Depending on who's working, you can get a great latte, and food. But I've also gone, and had the WORST chai latte ever - and I'm really not exaggerating. And before you say, "Just have them make another one", you haven't seen how busy this place gets. By the time you get your latte, you don't want to spend another second awkwardly waiting in front of the bathroom hallway, or blocking in people at the bar at area. I've had just about everything on the menu at this point, and I've seen the best and the worst of each. The quesadilla is sometimes perfect, crispy, filling, and delicious. But then I'll go the next week and it's dripping with oil, soggy, and disgusting. I keep going back, because like I said, it's about 50/50. However, I started to go a lot less because I feel that if I'm paying $5 for a cup of coffee, it better be good and unfortunately, this place can't guarantee that at this time. read more
