I have wanted to try this place since a news story on TV about how it was started to give real world skills to special needs adults while they run a coffee shop and a kosher restaurant. They are seriously kosher with both a meat and milk kitchens. Being kosher does limit the menu. Only meat are types of fish. They are also open for breakfast and lunch. Many of the items on the menu would satisfy the adventurous foodies. I was with friends. One got an impossible cheeseburger, another salmon Eggs Benedict, third got a huge Michigan salad and I got a pizza that was made with a crust made from scratch. We were happy with our choices. A few of us even got the caramel apple cheesecake to go. Service was good. Plenty of parking and lots of seating inside and out, it is a nice way to spend part of a morning. We come here pretty often. For Sundays you generally need to reserve a few days in advance but any other day you can walk in. The coffee is really good. It's from a local place, Chazzanos. The food is up and down. There's times when it's been really good and other times that it's not quite warm or just a little bland. Regardless the ambiance makes up for it and I love the fact that they employ special needs individuals as busboys and waiters. It really is a beautiful business model. read more

Booked through Open Table and it was seamless. Our requested outside table was set and ready for us when we arrived. The service was top notch. A perfect balance of checking on us and coffee refills as we spent time catching up with friends and family. The food was excellent. Everyone loved their order. I think this is the only Kosher restaurant in the area. The cafe is part of Friendship Circle's Soul Projects, which focuses on providing vocational opportunities to adults with special needs. The cafe teaches adults with special needs the skills of food prep, cooking, hosting and serving. I have tried many things on the menu and it's always fresh and delicious. Love the smoothies and cappuccino. They serve Starbucks coffee. I also like the yogurt bowl, lox plate and blintzes. Always great service. They are attached to the Friendship Circle art studio so there is always something interesting to see. read more

Terrible service! Ordered a menu item and asked twice where it was and it never arrived. Omelette was overly burnt and heavily salted so we sent it back without replacement. If you cant prepare eggs there isnt a point to ordering anything else. Our waitress Pearl had a bad attitude and was unfriendly. She neglected to bring something I ordered after two reminders. This kind of service isnt acceptable and we wont return. Either fire your bad employees or train them in proper customer service! Note: this is a pescatarian/vegetarian restaurant. I had to come up with somewhere special to take my bestie for a birthday lunch. Her only request was make it simple and healthy, so I chose Soul Cafe. First time for both of us. I liked the contemporary scene and there's a cool art studio on the other side where artists are doing their thing. The soup du jour was potato and corn chowder. The other option was French onion and that was my pick. French onion soup at most places is too salty, but thankfully this one was not overly salted. For an entree, we went with the Wild Mushroom pasta and added salmon. Good dish, but the salmon was so thin it ended up overdone. I paired it with the Heirloom Tomato and Beet salad with tarragon dressing. I couldn't taste/find the fennel, but the salad was solid. The pasta also came with a nice side salad and the dressing was a super surprise. They call it green goddess since it contains avocado. I want to put that dressing on everything. Friend really enjoyed the place and said everything tasted natural and homemade. I already have ideas for what I want to try next time I return. read more

I don't usually go out for breakfast on Sunday mornings, so I haven't been able to make it to the Soul Cafe when they were open, as they are a kosher restaurant that observes a Saturday Sabbath. But, last Sunday, I woke up to no power & a desire for coffee, so I decided to give it a shot. This restaurant kind of has to be rated on a different kind of scale. First, because it's run by the Friendship Circle, there is a charitable element to it. I kept this in mind as I looked at the menu prices, which are rather high for the offerings. Second, because it's kosher, it doesn't offer the types of choices I usually want. (I am a fan of sausage. And most things meat.) Third, the service was kind of slow; it took a long time to be waited on when I sat down. After that, however, it was pretty good. The server approved of my choice of French toast -- she said it was the best thing on the menu. It was pretty good -- light, fluffy and creamy. The syrup was placed artistically on the plate, which was pretty, but not enough to actually taste. I would have liked some more on the side. The poached pear was nice as well. But, $9 is a pretty steep price to pay for a couple pieces of egg-soaked challah. I was disappointed that they "proudly" offer Starbucks coffee. It is, indeed, the only kind they have, and I don't care for it, although I know it is the "in" thing. It tastes burnt to me. I prefer milder coffee blends. Still, it is an admirable thing that Friendship Circle is doing with this restaurant, giving its clients the opportunity to work in a real-life situation. We recently move to West Bloomfield so one thing to know is we are foodies and talkers and we lobe making new friends no matter race religion etc. I was so excited to try this place. I always say the Jewish people are my people. Coming from oak park we had such a welcoming and wonderful experience with the Jewish community. We came in as a lady was leaving they told her have a nice day as we walked in they looked at us as if I was wearing pie on my face. We said they sat us. Again I was so excited to finally get to go in and eat. Waitress never brought my husband coffee, food was good. The way we felt was not good guy on the grill was eating while cooking, prep person licked his fingers and returned to chopping. When we left the two at the front said nothing to us. It was like thank you for your money now get the hell out. It made me sad that I feel as if you're not Jewish or ..... they made it very clear we were not welcomed. The only reason I'm giving two stars is because for the philosophy/purpose of this restaurant...even though the service, or should I say lack of service, received today was the exact opposite of what they profess. A friend and I stopped in for brunch after church and although we were immediately seated, it was at least 15 minutes before anyone asked if we had been helped (note: all the other tables were being waited on). Came to table at 45 minute mark to tell us soup got contaminated and had to be thrown out. Ordered salad instead. Never saw any food after an hour so we left to go eat somewhere else. They are unaware of federal and state laws for disabled persons. The worker asked me for my service dog card or ID or certificate. Which is a scam. You can register a jar of nutella on one of those websites. They did not know the questions to ask to see if it was a service dog and when I told her asking for a card wasn't legal she pointed to my legitimate cardiac alert and mobility assistance service dog and said well that's illegal too. I directed her to read the ADA of 1990. We finally sat down and she kept staring and pointing at me multiple times which just made me uncomfortable and had to leave. Please train your workers so they are aware of laws. It is not her fault she was unaware of this and management should be training their workers better. read more

We saw a news article about this place and were eager to give it a try. I had the fancy toast, an egg, and fruit and it was yummy. My husband had the shakshuka and said it was delicious. We both had coffees but those took longer than our food to come out but no worries. Clean place, reasonable prices, decent amount of seating inside and out, friendly and knowledgeable staff, and everything was very fresh and locally sourced. Our first visit to Soul Cafe and we're looking forward to going again. Contrary to some of the reviews, we did not find the wait time to be excessive; it's Sunday at brunch time, we expect there will be a wait. We did opt to sit at the high top table, and we found we actually liked it there, as we were at the far end of the place and a bit removed from the hubbub. There are a lot of intriguing menu items, and once we made up our minds, we were very happy with our choices. The lentil soup is very tasty; it does not need the mystery dollop that comes on it. I also had the toast with avocado, egg, cucumber & radish, and it was delicious, with a very generous serving of avocado, which I appreciated. I requested the grilled veggies instead of the fries, and they were hot and fresh. Service was friendly and prompt. My only gripe about the place, is the pricing on some of the menu items. A chocolate coffee beverage my dining companion ordered was $5, and it wasn't anything amazing or even all that large, and the cookies are $3 a piece, yikes. We opted for scones, which were both very good, with the blueberry being our favorite. read more
