By the time everyone settled onto their mats, Anna asked: "Is there anything you'd like to focus on today?" One yogi answered without hesitation. "Release." The whole room smiled. Same. One collective Om. A few Sun Salutations. Then we were off. The Guide: Anna Murray * Express 45 Anna guided us through a few Sun Salutations before gradually stepping back and letting us move through several on our own. There was no stopping. One posture became the next. One breath became the next. Before I knew it... we were halfway through. Once the body was warm, the invitations began. Side Angle. Half Bind. Full Bind. Bird of Paradise. You could stay exactly where you were... or keep opening. The music carried everything forward. Beach House. Rhye. ODESZA. Gregory Alan Isakov. Then, almost unfairly... it was time to come down. Forty-five minutes. Gone. At the end of class, Anna invited us to bask in our wholeness, our worthiness, the steadiness of our being, and then encouraged us to carry that presence into the rest of our day. The Tribe After class, I lingered. Showered. Wandered back to the lobby. Started talking. Dance came up. Anna had danced with the Salt Lake City Ballet. Another yogi studied modern dance. Of course. That explained a few things. Yoga keeps introducing me to fascinating people. Different paths. Same practice. Same willingness to open. Space & Place This studio deserves its own section. Floor-to-ceiling windows frame the Wasatch Mountains. Living artwork. During class, the mountains never leave your peripheral vision. They're a part of the practice. My favorite yoga room. By far. The Takeaway Halfway through class, I caught myself thinking: "I don't want this to end." Open. Present. Moving. Apparently...that's what release feels like. Field Note: We don't release to let go. I almost couldn't hold in the laughter. Always happy to donate to a local charity I suppose. This franchise will never even be a consideration for me in the future. Also, they have staff in this bldg 3 days a week for just a few hours at a time, so when you need to cancel and it HAS to be done in person, you'll have to carve out some specific time in the schedule to go have your money stolen. And as a result, my core muscles have improved greatly from my lethargic sedentary lifestyle of a few years ago. I also occasionally use the media room treadmill and watch movies on the huge screen. And the hot tub, sauna and steam room are great for a sore bod. I still have the gut to prove my love of food and beer. But I can carry it with pride knowing that there are some stronger muscles underneath that will help me keep moving into my 60s. I can highly recommend this nice, clean and professional gym in North Bountiful.

The only time I haven't been a member was when I was away at college. I even worked for skills for a year. It's my favorite gym in the world, but with the new ownership things have really gone downhill. When I used to work at skills we cleaned the bathrooms every shift. Now I'd be surprised if they are cleaned once a week. The bathrooms are absolutely nasty. And with the new ownership they've switched to a system where someone is only manning the front desk for a few hours a day, meaning no towel service, no help with memberships, no movies in the cinema room. The cinema room has been turned into the spin studio meaning no more working out while watching a film. The yoga studio was torn down and made into some weird stretching space. Buttons on machines are broken and will go for months without being fixed. And forget using the hot tub or sauna -- they are always broken. The class schedule used to be packed during the morning and evening, now there's only one class offered during the evenings most nights. And while everything has changed, prices have gone up a few bucks -- which isn't a big deal, but I paid for what skills used to be. I used to love skills. It was a great local gym with the best amenities, equipment, and classes around. But it's turned into a sad shell of its former self. I've cancelled my membership and switched gyms. I hope they can turn skills around before it's too late.

I usually have to wipe down my space before I put my mat down because there is hair/dirt. Second, I think there is black mold and definitely rust all over the white beams and speakers. The vents on the ceiling are also covered in dust. Another thing is they used to clean your weights for you, which was helpful because after every class there is a huge line you have to wait in to clean your weights which can be annoying. Overall I think that if you're paying the hefty $140 a month you should be able to workout in a clean studio with clean air and not have to do your own cleaning.
