Just a warning that it was indeed my first time...so if you are looking for a first timer review of the float spa experience for SOULEX then I'm your man.... Book a session and come prepared. What does that entail. Bathing suit, maybe shower essentials if you want, and ensure you've had something to eat that will sit well with you as to not disturb the moment. Although Tati is down the street and they make decent coffeee....just grab a pastry because you will have the jitters and that doesn't work well with relaxation. As the owner told me...everyone floats...so you do not need to worry about how this will work. There is an estimated 1000 lbs of epson salt in the float tank so you will be fine...it's impossible not to float and not to feel relaxed upon exit. I did the two person float which is almost like a big bath experience. Be sure to listen to the rules...no hot showers, don't shave before coming, and keep your phone far away. The lighting and sounds from the experience are perfect but if tempted to try again I would go with pitch black and possibly my own music if that's an option. 45 mins was enough for me but I'm told they have experiences that can last 2 hours long. Drink plenty of fluids after the experience and whatever you do don't touch your face or you will pay the consequences. The owner Padrani is very welcoming and friendly...I asked about specials, HSA, memberships, and benefits to ensure I got a full understanding of why the float spa experience is so popular. During the early afternoon hours parking is close by on the street...2 hours parking would be enough for an hour float session. We weren't rushed or pressured to leave immediately after and were allowed to take our time to get dress and exit. I haven't floated alone or for more than 20 Minutes ever, but as an introvert confronted with the reality of living in a full house during a pandemic with no escape, I asked my husband to find a float spa and gift it to me. (Yes this is how married people do holiday gifting when they're tired and old lol). I booked within about a month and was able to get in the next day. The spa entrance is located on 11th not Mass which requires a little finding but the receptionist answers promptly and directs efficiently. The street parking near Mass is touch and go but there is a garage at this location though I cannot vouch for pricing as I found metered street parking. The check in was quick and effortless as I'd done my waivers and created an account online. The receptionist provided me with sandals-- you leave your shoes in a cubby in the lobby-- and walked me to my room. The room is huge and the float tank is bigger than it seems. There is a shower in the room but the full bathrooms are in the hallway. Guests are asked to shower, remove all hair products and skin creams before entering the float and they provide shampoo, conditioner and body wash. They also provide a towel-- more than one might be reasonable given the showering before and after and they forgot my robe. Thank goodness I didn't have to go to the bathroom! They also provided ear plugs and other small packages toiletries, which I highly recommend you use. Highly. I forgot to use the earplugs and my ears popped for HOURS after my float. They fill the tub in front of you and you're able to inspect. It was immaculately clean of course. COVID protocols are the reason the linens and toiletries are removed from the room. Everything is removed and sanitized between each guest. The bathroom in the hallway has a hair dryer but, again, the toiletries have been removed. They have a lotion dispenser, but I found it clogged and incapable of dispensing anything. The shower was great and it takes just about the same length of time for the tank to fill as to shower which is perfect! I LOVED THE FLOAT but since it was my first time, opted to keep the lights on and, as I mentioned previously, forgot to use the earplugs. The spa is off Mass which is VERY BUSY and I found myself getting distracted by cars, elevators, sirens etc... I truly think al lot of this would disappear with the earplugs. Nevertheless, I emerged from my 60 minutes refreshed, rejuvenated and FULLY RELAXED. I cannot wait to go back!! The receptionist is so nice and it is so quiet and peaceful there. read more

I experienced my first float experience while visiting DC for a quick trip. If I could recall my 9 month time in the womb, this probably is the closest thing to it!! It was such a relaxing, therapeutic, and amazing experience!! I fell asleep in there! I also met the CFO/Founder, Pedramin Vaziri, who handled the check-in and tour of the facility. I was given a gift certificate for Xmas in 2022 but didn't actually use it until my birthday in June 2023. From then until this present time I have been happily floating every 2 weeks! This is the best thing I can do for myself to relax, restore and rejuvenate from daily stresses. I have to admit, my very first float was a little hard because I couldn't really relax my mind and was thinking too much. But..by the second float I had to give myself permission to relax and just give in to the experience and I'm so happy I did! Now it's become a part of my routine for my body, mind and spirit! I am actually at a loss for the right words to describe this incredible experience. I can't wait to go again. This was my first session--ever. And I elected to have calming (for me) rain sounds and no lights. I will admit that during my first realization that I would be in complete darkness, I had a mild panic attack but I think the chamber and how relaxed I was ensured I didn't have a freak out. During the session I was able to reach a deeper relaxed and meditative state that took me years to attain as a person who practices mindfulness daily. The facility was impeccably cleaned and this business is adhering to COVID protocols so I was able to fully relax. Staff was exceptionally welcoming and very informative. I look forward to returning. I truly enjoyed my experience here. I was instantly put at ease the moment I walked in because the spa has such a relaxing environment. Complimentary herbal tea was provided while we waited for our appointment. We recieved a quick tour of the facility and then into the pods we went! You have a private room with your own pod, towel, washcloth, robe, soap, lotion, shampoo, and conditioner. Once inside the pod it's just you and your thoughts. I felt completely at peace, but an hour was too long to spend with my thoughts (lol). This was a one-time only experience for me. Its not my cup of tea, but it was a great experience with my friends. The three of us were able to book separate rooms for the same time. Our appts were for an hour....I freaked out about 15mins in but got my bearings soon after. The rooms are very nice with a shower included and other small items you may need. The reception was very pleasing. I forget the guy's name but we talked real estate afterwards. He was so gentle in energy, I trusted him from check-in. The "stress" tea they had for us to sip on was just delicious I found myself purchasing a jar on my way back. To float may be relaxing for many, but I think a more hands-on massage is more my speed. I had heard about float spas back in Los Angeles, but Soulex is the first of its kind with sensory deprivation chambers here in DC! It was so relaxing and just what I needed!! The facility itself is super clean, open, and welcoming. I felt so calm as soon as I walked in. Pedramin greeted me and showed me around before my session. I loved that each room was private and had everything you needed from shower amenities and space to put your items to ear plugs, towels, and a robe already set aside for the session. In the common area, there's a single bathroom and a space for getting ready that has hair and body amenities available. In the private room, there's a saltwater pod and I thought the saltwater did wonders for rejuvenating my skin! I loved that you had a choice of how much or how little sensory deprivation you wanted. You can do total sensory deprivation without any sounds or lights; or you can leave the soothing sounds and/or mood lighting on if you want. The overhead lights in the room are motion sensored and turn off soon after you start your float. You can also control the lid of the pod, closing it all the way or leaving it fully or partially open. I left mine partially open with a little sliver of an opening. I love how you can control your experience based on personal preference. For me, I decided to keep the soothing sounds and dim mood lights on within the pod. Honestly, after a while of floating everything seem to fade away in my mind as I fell deeper into the meditative state! One hour in the pod felt like a full night's rest! I came in feeling exhausted after a long shift in the hospital for my medical school rotation, but afterwards I felt so refreshed, calm, and rested. I highly recommend checking Soulex out for sure! They even have a bigger pool that fits 2 people if you wanted to do a couples session! It's definitely a nice getaway from the hectic life in DC. A session in a float pod is a great component of regular overall meditation practice, but it's not for everyone. Recognizing that, I would still recommend making an appointment here if you're interested and don't mind confined spaces and silence. I've used two different pod rooms here and both were clean, neat, and quiet. You can choose how much light and sound you want before your float, so you don't necessarily have to meditate in dark and silence if you don't want to. My one nitpick about this place is that it would feel nice to have more of a closed-off or private area for relaxation and recuperation post-float. Right now, the one available room feels too small and is located right next to a hallway with no door. read more

I'm fairly lukewarm on this experience. Pre-float: The person who walked me through the spa was nice and friendly, although he did make a comment which made it sound like he didn't think my job (teaching) qualifies as a particularly stressful one... Many reviewers mentioned tea, which I was not offered, but my room was ready so maybe it's only if you have to wait? The Float: As soon as I heard about this place, I thought I would LOVE it. It sounded like an ideal way to spend an hour, since I love to just float in the pool. I'm usually super-bouyant, but didn't feel that way here. I kept touching the base of the tub (probably has more to do with my circumference and the depth of the water, than the density of the salt water itself). The first 15-20 minutes (I'm guessing since you lose all concept of time) were borderline terrifying. I kept grabbing the railings, and at one point just pushed open the lid and sat in the tub. Eventually, though, I was able to relax and drift off, which I guess is all part of the process. My favorite part may have been the shower afterwards, but I thought the float was overall a success. Post-float: I found the rooms themselves very luxurious, but the 'lounge' area lacking. I really would have liked to just continue to enjoy my zen feeling after the float, but sitting in the dressing area didn't seem very relaxing. The couch outside was a definite no because one of the receptionists was on speakerphone with a friend when I came out. So, I just hopped in my car and drove away - not the most indulgent way to savor an hour-long float experience. Additional note: Their gift certificates give a short window of validity (6 months). Forgive me if I'm mistaken, but I'm pretty sure there's a federal law against having gift certificates expire now? If someone spends $100 to buy a gift certificate for a friend, it would be really unfortunate (and unethical) to have that money disappear before they could use it. I know for many people, six months would seem like plenty of time, but with a baby at home in MD, it wasn't easy to plan a trip to a spa in DC. read more

I am giving this review 5 stars bc I don't want to dock an entire point (and mess up the 5.0 rating) for things outside of the spa's control. So, in actuality, I am giving 4.5 stars. PROs: - Honey and I booked appointments online, and had a little trouble booking. We had personal attention from SOULEX staff that guided us the entire process. - Venue was spectacular! It was pristine, clean and ambiance was beautiful! I was very impressed. - Upon arrival, staff greeting was friendly and accommodating! Honey and I had a delicious tea while waiting for our pods. - The private rooms were exceptional and look EXACTLY like the pictures! The shower that you take before and after is a rain shower that feels phenomenal. I actually think I enjoyed the shower almost as much as the pod. It also helps that the shower temperature gets hot as the pod water is not hot, so it's a good balance. - The pod was really cool! While I was not in there the entire hour, I didn't feel ripped off. You really control your experience in the room. I could have gone back and forth between shower and pod for the hour, if I wanted. I did the full experience, closing the pod all the way; having the lights and music dim naturally; floating w the head rest; wading thru the water at the end. - After the experience, I was totally relaxed and felt like I wanted to take the nap of life! Too bad there were chores to be done, but after the mix of SOULEX and housework, sleep was incredible!!! Thank you for that experience! Okay...here is the 0.5 point dock... CON: I am a woman of color, and unfortunately, my hair did not sustain causing it to be quite a "time-and-money investment" outside of the floating experience as I needed to get my hair redone because the salt.was.everywhere. Maybe it was my own excitement that prevented me from being rational, but I wish I thought rationally before the experience. I did buy two swim caps to avoid maximum damage, but it didn't work. So word of caution: if you have particular hair textures that you can't afford (either bc of time or money) to redo (I.e., wash, condition, blow dry, style) that evening/immediate next morning, then this is not for you. Honestly. If you are like me, you don't want to spend an additional four hours on your hair after a superbly relaxing experience. This is not a direct reflection of the studio bc the premise of the spa is to float. With high salt content. I totally get it, but I'm all about managing expectations. read more

The actual floating is an interesting experience that really helped me relax and take some time for meditation, a practice I'm not the greatest at following. Overall I enjoyed the float experience. Garage parking is available directly across for street. However, I would not recommend this location due to dishonest practices. I booked my visit directly with the owner (Pedramin). I requested two rooms, one for myself and a friend. During the booking call, I requested the ability to play a customized playlist during my float. Unfortunately, upon arrival, my pod was not functional. I asked to switch rooms, but the staff could not accommodate me, stating customers with a subscription receive room preference. My float consisted of 90 minutes of thunder; it was not as relaxing as I hoped. Following my session, I requested to contact the owner. The owner has yet to return my call or respond to my email. Staff should only allow booking if the room and amenities are not fully functional. This was a bait-and-switch experience. I suggest researching other locations. read more

This is a tough one to review. I have to say it doesn't deserve less than a four because it is what it claims to be, a float spa. Where it fell short -- for me personally -- was that it was not relaxing. It is boring. I love relaxation, whether it's meditation, massages, spas, or simply swimming alone in a pool. But, I discovered that floating in a tub with no sound is not relaxing. It felt closer to being dead, or what I suspect having no body would feel like. I want to feel relieved, comfortable, in fact, some sound like the initial few minutes when the relaxation sounds were played were the highlight. It made it more of a sensory experience, where when it became silent, it became the absence of senses. When the pool became silent, all I was conscious of was the ringing in my ears (tinnitus) and slowly bouncing my head off the side of the tub as I drifted around in the float tub. I tried with and without the float pillow, but either way, my head bounced off the sides of the tub, as I'd slowly drift back and forth. But, I'm aware that all of my criticism are personal. The spa seems great for other people. It is clean, well-maintained, the staff are polite, and it's kind of cool just to experience at least once. But, I'll take a massage or swim in a nice pool over this, unless someone can combine the experience somehow -- add in the relaxation music or someone massaging you before or after, or some jets of water, like a hot tub. This would work better for me. Zero sound, touch, feeling, etc. doesn't do anything but make me excited to get out and return to normal life. read more

I absolutely LOVE Soulex. I have been going there regularly since December 2017. Once I went for the first time, I was hooked! And I went about once per week for over a year, until I recently moved from D.C. Every time I am back in the city, I stop by for an appointment (or two)! I am overcoming chronic illness, including chronic pain from Lyme disease and fibromyalgia. Floating has been the single-most effective treatment for reversing my chronic pain. Today, I am almost completely pain free. Floating also improved my quality of sleep and helped me with overcoming brain fog. I found that the benefits from floating increased the more times that I went. The Soulex owners and staff are the best. Back in winter, I had been looking for an indoor pool for swimming, and I came across an ad for Soulex. As someone who finds water extremely relaxing but also struggle with mindfulness, meditating, and simply sitting quietly, I thought it would be a good experience. I booked a three-pack and have done two, with the third one scheduled. As other reviewers have said, the facilities are extremely clean and the staff are friendly and helpful. I appreciated how customizable the experience is (lights/no lights in the pod, music or other nature sounds). During my first float, I opted for lights and ocean sounds, and I also kept the pod top open a bit until I felt like I was more used to the setting. It's a good way to ease into it. It took me a while to calm my body down - having a low profile "halo" shaped float assist under my head helped - and figure out a comfortable position. During my second float, I was able to get into a relaxed state a lot more quickly. And you really do float. I am already naturally buoyant but if you are on the fence because you don't float in pools, this is very very different. And once you are in the room, you can basically do what you feel most comfortable with for the time you are there. I say that because I was worried that an hour would feel too long. But when I realized, "oh - I can get out whenever I am ready to" and that I could really tailor it, it helped me relax a bit. Definitely recommend. read more

After years of seeing these tanks used on TV shows like Fringe and Stranger Things, and hearing Joe Rogan talk about them, I finally scheduled and appointment at SOULEX last night and experienced it for myself. The short review is: what are you waiting for? DO IT! The full review starts with the ambiance of the place. From the moment your walk in it's a peaceful calm inside with relaxing music playing. The staff is friendly and wonderful. While the room was being prepared they brought me a water and a member of the staff sat and chatted a bit about the experience. The room was ready right on schedule, or perhaps even a bit early. The room was even more peaceful than the lobby. It was silent and offered total privacy. A staff member escorted me there and explained how the tank worked. Essentially it fills for a few minutes and during that time you shower to remove any oils from your body. When the water reaches the level of the lights that surround the tank it stops filling and that is when the timer begins. I did a 60 minute session so once the water filled to the level of the lights, it stopped, and I entered the tank and pulled the lid shut. Inside there was a floating ring available to optionally be used as a pillow, and a bottle of fresh water and a wash cloth to rinse any saltwater out of your eyes. During the first 5 minutes there were colorful lights and peaceful sounds. Initially I wasn't floating so well because I was still feeling a bit anxious from work, but by the time this period was over I was at ease and floating felt natural. During this time I also experienced some discomfort in my neck and opted to use the floating pillow ring for additional support, and I'm glad I did because the discomfort was quickly relieved. For the next 50 minutes there was no light and it was absolutely silent. It was interesting... When my eyes were open I thought I could see light coming from the periphery of my vision, but when I moved my eyes to either side there was none. Eventually there was no difference between when my eyes were open or shut, and later when I opened them it was almost like there were black shapes in the blackness. All the while I attempted to clear my mind and focus only on my breathing and the sensation of the water supporting my body, and while I lost focus at times, I quickly recovered it whenever I noticed. As it went on it felt like I was quickly falling into dreams that were seemingly nonsense and then it seemed I came out of them just as quickly, but it was difficult to say because I felt the isolation distorted my perception of time. I was later told by a staff member that the falling into dreams like that is common and is known as a theta-state. I thought spending an hour in darkness and silence would be insufferable, especially as a tinnitus sufferer. Silence can often make the ringing in my ears absolutely unbearable. My experience was anything but that though. Before I knew it the lights were coming back on and the session was coming to an end. There were five more minutes of colorful lights, which I'm sure were identical to the first five minutes, but the way my eyes perceived them was different. At this point I felt really relaxed and even joyful, a drastic change from the anxious state I was in when I entered the facility. After I left I felt really connected with my surroundings. No more racing thoughts or anxiety, and I had a pleasant ride home on the metro. I was so relaxed that I fell asleep almost immediately after I got home, and I had a great night of sleep. This morning I woke up energized and eager to share my experience with everyone who cares to listen. 10/10 will be a repeat customer. I was a bit worried I wouldn't like it when I signed up for the 3 float first-time introductory package without having ever tried it before, but now that I have I'm glad I still have two floats remaining and that I got them at a discounted price. The floating sensation was exactly what I expected reminiscent of floating in the ocean on a very calm day...Now take out the light add meditative sounds for five minutes and then total darkness with no sound or light for 50. After getting used to it for about 20 minutes I finally got into a floating trans where my breathing slowed to the point where I was forcing myself to breath. I guess since there was no energy being expelled my body didn't need to breathe as much... And then I slept... peacefully floated. Then five minutes before my session was over the music started slowly and soft blues and magenta light filled my tube and my session was coming to a close. Inside the cocoon felt like something out of a movie where they were making humans in cocoon eggs floating to use for science (yup watch a lot of sci-fi) ... I ended with a nice hot shower to wash all the salt off in my private room. Only drawback- If you have to scratched on your leg or a paper cut on that finger... That salt will let you know where and sting for a little while. They do provide petroleum jelly just in case but I was already in the salt water by that time! I decided to try it after a friend of mine had mentioned that after his float, he felt different (in a good way) + relaxed for almost three days following -- pretty intriguing. Soulex is a beautiful facility. The owner is friendly and welcoming and explains the process well + answers all questions you might have. The rooms are large with a private shower that you use before and after the float. They give you petroleum jelly to cover any cuts since the float is in salt water, as well as earplugs (recommended to use but not necessary), and an optional headrest. There's also an emergency button and you have full control over the whole situation (you can open the pod whenever you want), which made me feel better. During the float, it was a bit similar to trying meditation -- I couldn't fully relax and could hear a million thoughts running through my head. After the lights and music died down, I started to relax. The weightlessness threw me off a bit - there were a couple times I had to touch my leg or arm to make sure my body was still there, because I almost felt like I wasn't there, which was a strange but cool feeling. I never reached a full theta-state but I can see how sensory deprivation tanks can lead to that state of mind. The one thing I didn't like is the lights turning off while in the shower (both before and after the float). The room is motion-sensor controlled but maybe the motion sensors don't apply to the shower area because I couldn't get them to turn back on until exiting the shower. Talk about a NEXT LEVEL float spa. I've been to other sensory deprivation spas and businesses which were all nice, but this is immaculate with lovely ambiance. The staff is so nice, friendly, and immensely helpful: It's always a pleasing experience. The rooms are very large with space to shower. (The rain shower is lovely). The spa has flotation pods but also a room that's open with a large pool (same concept - still totally in the dark). It's a nice option if you're claustrophobic. The pods and the pool both have a very cool feel, and these tiny glowing lights to help guide you and turn off after a few minutes. The float experience is serene and relaxing. It's amazing to be able to totally disconnect for a while and just float. They have little floating headrests you can use, earplugs if you like, and Vaseline if you have any cuts you want to cover up. They think of it all! They also have great amenities, like bathrobes you can wander around in, excellent body/hair products, tea in a relaxation/tea room for after your float. It's all great. Floating in DC can be pricey, but they have seemed to have a deal or two here or there you can snag. I've gone twice now, but it's really transformative and I sleep AMAZING for at least a week or two after. I highly recommend giving soulex a try! read more

I have visited Soulex 4 times now. It's a fantastic experience. The place is bright, beautifully designed and squeaky clean. Each room is appointed with a fresh robe and towel, shower products and ear plugs (so the salt water doesn't get in your ears). You can leave the pod open or closed, lights on or off, and choose from a variety of sounds (birds, whales, zen, etc.) or keep the sound and lights off. The owners of this business are friendly and caring, taking the time to show you where your things go, bringing you tea, water, etc. On my first float, I was a little fidgety. Not sure how to really relax, so rolling around in the water and looking around. By my second visit, I "got it." The warm water calmed by body and I went to a place of deep relaxation - not exactly sleeping, but a very tranquil state. At the end of the hour, lights begin to "wake" you and I got out of the pod feeling like I'd just had a restorative nap. I highly recommend this place if you are looking for a clean, zen-like environment in which to find some soothing self-care. read more
