I'm surprised at the bad reviews here. Obviously I have only my own personal experiences, but I've been his patient since he practiced in NYC and then here in Westchester even before he opened this office. I like that he takes a scientific approach and is happy to discuss options with me, for example my using daily disposable contacts for two days instead of one (he didn't recommend it but we discussed the risks). He's also changed his mind about some issues based on the latest research, which frankly is uncommon with medical professionals. I never felt any pressure or upselling. He does have the latest machines, but I see them as being to my benefit, for example he has a machine where he can detect macular degeneration and get color images of it. My only complaint is that he's older than I am, so at some point he'll retire and I'll have to find a new eye doctor. Went through that with dentists a couple of times already... read more

Excellent experience all round: Dr. Rubinstein was thorough in his testing, and took the time to explain everything. - what he was checking and why, and what each result meant for me. Same with his prescription: he explained what his plan for accommodating my aging eyesight, and the reasoning behind it. His receptionist is also wonderful and very helpful, and made dealing with the insurance details simpler than I've experienced anywhere else. Karen at the front desk is so rude. I've been a patient there annd spend over a thousand dollars on glasses and contacts. i like the doctor. I stopped in to ask a question and the door was locked. Instead of walking around her front desk and saying "hello the doctor stepped out l, can I help you?" She shoed me with her hand like I was a dog and yelled from her desk "the doctor isn't in". I've been going to Dr. Steve for several years now. He does a thorough eye exam, provides guidance and explains the tests and scans that he runs, and is patient with questions. I had purchased glasses with scratch protection guarantee and when they wound up with surface scratches he facilitated getting the lenses replaced at no charge. The selection of eyewear is extensive for a small, independent office. Highly recommended! read more

I really like Dr R. He can be chatty but you can tell he is very passionate and knowledgeable. Answered all my questions and explained anything I was still confused about. Received my contacts quickly as well. On the other hand, front desk is very unpleasant. I thought this was a one off situation, maybe they were having a bad day but talking to some other patients, it seems they are always this rude. Inpatient, condescending and honestly disrespectful. They made me feel uncomfortable and rushed. I want to come back to this practice but I have a lot to consider when there are many other offices in the area. read more

I would give zero if I could. EXTREMELY RUDE!!!! And a total rip off!!! I went in for an eye exam and contact lense fitting (typically this costs $175 or less anywhere else), but when I got in the exam room I was told that he would ONLY do my contact lens exam if I agreed to about 4 other unnecessary examinations (which would cost over $500) years. I told him that I pay out-of-pocket for my vision exams and wanted to keep the cost and procedures as minimal as possible. He then RUDELY said "THEN MAYBE YOU SHOULD GO SOMEWHERE ELSE!" No problem! I stood up and left right then and there. This man and his behemoth Covid- freak, germophobe freak of a wife are DISGRACEFUL. I walked out after 5 mins. After reading through many of these comments, I can confidently say that this doctor is a complete racist! If you're not Jewish, they will MISTREAT you. Read through the comments if you don't believe me. TRY "ENVISAGE" in New Rochelle or Yonkers. I went to the Yonkers location immediately after leaving this dump of an optometrist. Probably the worst medical experience I've ever had in my entire life. Trying to speak to Dr Rubenstien is like going into battle. I could not get through 5 seconds without him interrupting or snapping at me. Furthermore, within five minutes of my exam Dr. R declared he would check for a brain tumor with a $39 extra fee. Taken-aback and shocked, I asked to continue my exam without this additional testing. (By the way, I have BCBS PPO1 plus a supplementary vision insurance) When he heard this, Dr. R immediately turned nasty, raised his voice, told me he would not exam me and told me to LEAVE his room! I have never met such an impatient and ill tempered person in my life. He is so inconsiderate and disrespectful. I left the facility immediately and only after a few hours got over my shock and distaste from this horrible experience. What really upset and bothered me was the doctors aggressive reaction when I did not want to be forced to participate in an exam that would cost me extra. Dr. R's little professionalism and respect for his patient vanished immediately when he did not get his way. This experience has left me absolutely shocked and speechless. Went to see him after being referred by a family member. The guy is clearly well educated however he is also clearly only interested in how much he can make off of you. Openly debating to himself in front of me the different ways he could bill my insurance to get the most money then stating "if they don't cover it you have to pay out of pocket bc I'm not in the business of losing money" as looked at me for confirmation I could afford it. Apparently not realizing I am a doctor myself. Even after this very uncomfortable and unprofessional first encounter where he spent the other half of the time bashing eye surgeons I still planned on coming back because as I stated he is clearly well educated in his field. I had a 2nd appointment scheduled for the actual fitting. An appointment he wouldn't schedule until the insurance approved payment by the way. I had to cancel the day before as my mother in law who watches my 2 young daughters on Tuesdays was unable to as she was having a bad week after her chemotherapy. So I called and apologized and said I can't make it. The receptionist who in my opinion completely lacks any sense of compassion went on to tell me how much of a big deal these appointments are and how they are so hard to get and if I want to reschedule I need to pick a day I can "guarantee" I can make. At this point I explain the situation and that there is no way to tell how the chemotherapy will impact her week to week. Some days are good and some are bad. I then stated if you need a definite day I'm sorry I can't give you one and I'll find another doctor. Her response was "okay" and then nothing. After hanging up she called back with a defensive tone stating "you didn't let me finish" and proceeded to rant and not let me get a word in. So I simply stated "I don't want to be rude hood bye I will be hanging up now". It's funny to see other negative reviews on here and I also see some great ones. It makes me curious about what makes them treat some people with respect and others like less than human.. read more

I'm also writing this because I saw some very negative reviews that sounded worlds apart from what I experienced. I had an exam yesterday, and it was pretty clear from the get go that Dr. Rubenstein is very good at what he does and enjoys it. He gave me useful information about contact wearing that previous optometrists never gave me. He helped me understand why my last contacts prescription didn't feel right. I didn't feel rushed, he answered all my questions, and was obviously very thorough during the exam. I went in a little nervous, as it's been too long since I've had a good experience with an eye doctor, but I immediately realized that this is the kind of care I've been missing out on. I seldom stop to write a review but am compelled to do so...given how much I enjoy seeing Dr Rubenstein and his staff - it's like going to visit old friends. As a woman over 50 seeing both near and far has been a tough as my eyes struggle to adjust to finer print particularly in dimly lit places. Dr Rubenstein immediately understood that I'd be less inclined to wear reading glasses and patiently worked to find the right solution. I couldn't be happier with the outcome and am delighted to say that my friends marvel at how well I can read. So much so that I've become the person in the group that reads the menu aloud at restaurants as they complain. :-) read more

I had to post because I saw some negative reviews that aren't consistent with my experience. This is a wonderful neighborhood optometry center. Nice stock of eyeglasses with access to a wide list of brands. For contact lens wearers like me, Dr. Rubinstein carries Alcon, my favorite brand. Dr. Rubinstein is professional explains things very clearly. Most important (for me anyway) is his availability. This place is open on Saturdays and Sundays, which is really the best time for me! read more

NEVER AGAIN!! It took forever and a day to get my contacts, quoted a sky rocket price and misinformed on my insurance coverage. After reading the majority of decent reviews here I'm not sure if it was just me treated this way or what. I can only wonder if its because I was African American. I have never experienced anything like it in my life. This guy is TOTALY condescending, acting as if I shouldn't have a single question. I would ask him something and he would start huffing and puffing, make snippy comments, ignore me or get a huge attitude. There was a time that I asked for a printout of my eyeglass prescription and he slammed it on the counter. When I asked about the PD he actually said "There's a few colleges of optometry in WESTCHESTER you know? Maybe you want to check them out!" (I kid you not) Complete jerk! read more

I had an unpleasant experience with this practice. I also sent several emails to Dr. Rubinstein hoping that he would rectify the situation, however, he never reached back out to me. This was my first time getting my eyes checked and a prescription pair of glasses - so I take the blame for being naive - however I don't like to deal with people that take advantage of customers/patients, therefore I feel I should share my experience. I paid $500 for a pair of frames and lenses which I later found online for $200 (yes, I am to blame here as well). For the amount of money I paid for the glasses, I really expected higher quality lenses. The lenses I was given attract dirt and dust and have a green tint. Next, I was told I would receive my glasses in a two days. I didn't receive until over a week later. Following my issues with the glasses, I followed up several times, but the doctor hasn't been in contact since. If you go to this practice, take your prescription and buy the glasses elsewhere. read more

I got a pair of glasses 20 years ago (!) from Dr. Steve Rubinstein, way back in the 1990s, when he had an office in midtown Manhattan. A friend recommended him, and I had a great experience then, getting an exam, new lenses and frames and -- just as importantly -- attentive, friendly, professional service at a reasonable price. Flash forward to 2016 and I'm STILL getting and appreciating the same expert, caring care from the same Dr. Rubinstein, TWO DECADES LATER. I now get both glasses and my contact lenses from Dr. Rubinstein in his Mamaroneck office -- and I'm still wowed by his same attentive, friendly, professional service at reasonable prices. Sure, you can go online and find cheaper glasses (or anything), but these are my EYES, for heaven's sake, and I want a pro I trust. I'm also a professional photographer and I want superb care, and options, and information, and discussions, and a doctor's most precious commodity, his time. Dr. Rubinstein always gives me all the time I need, as well as current product information. He always takes the time to answer all my eye care questions. Do you know many doctors of any specialty that do this anymore? He'll answers all my random eyecare questions I accumulate, like when do I need to switch to reading glasses, does straining my eyes do permanent damage, etc., etc. Just having all these kinds of questions answered by the good Dr. are alone worth going to Sound Shore. Sure, the internet is a powerful informational tool, but I want EXPERIENCE and WISDOM, not just the web's onslaught of miscellaneous, unmediated info. Dr. Rubinstein and his staff always make me feel welcome and inform me of the latest contact lens developments like multi-focal lenses, et. al., and, just as important, whether they're right for me. Another confession: I've grown so dependent upon Dr. Rubinstein's eye and lens care, he's still the only eye care professional I use, now two decades later -- and I live 2500 miles away, in California! I schedule appointments when business takes me across the country. THAT is how much I like, enjoy, appreciate and value this optometrist's expertise and people skills. read more

I came to Dr. Rubinstein after seeing 2 other optometrists to fix my astigmatism. Dr. Rubinstein listened to all of my concerns and problems in the past and took the time to fit me into the perfect contact lenses for me. He also discovered what the two other optometrist missed. I wish I could give zero stars. I came here during COVID for an exam for my 11 year old son, who was having issues with his vision and headaches. He is remote learning, and has a lot of screen time. I live in Mamaroneck and thought this location would be good since it was close to our house, and the receptionist seemed professional. Wow, was I wrong. Once I sat down and my son was seen, I thought he was being professional, but noticed whenever he addressed me, and not my son he had an attitude of arrogance. I tried to ignore it, and this isn't my nature, however it was Sunday at 11am and I was trying to be relaxed. He explained to me that my son had astigmatism, and to follow him into the next room to "pick out glasses". Essentially, he grabbed the most expensive glasses he had, and put them in a bin for my son to try on, without any price tags on, and kept pushing the expensive glasses on my myself and my son. I thought this was bizarre as I have always had the option to go and choose my glasses elsewhere. The whole procedure was really rushed and hasty, almost a whirlwind of him telling me he's giving me "$100 off" and he's giving me a great deal, yet the prices were astronomical. It was then that he immediately, after my 11 year old son picked out the glasses he liked, which happened to the the most expensive ones he pushed on him for, asked for payment. I told him that I would have to speak to my husband and would not be able to make a decision about the glasses, without speaking to my husband the price etc. His attitude immediately changed for the worse, and he started to become curt and irritated. He added some crazy made up charge for helping pick out glasses, which was and additional $45, to the $25 copay. I questioned this, and he said to me, "do you even have $25 for the copay?!" I was so shocked and disgusted. Never have I ever been spoken to like this. I was mortified for him, that he could speak to a patient that way. I had even explained to him before the exam that I would be coming in shortly, since I was experiencing issues with my vision, and most likely would need glasses. Unfortunately I have to say I have never been treated so poorly by a Dr., or other professional. I called my husband from the car to explain to him the belittling treatment I received from the Dr., and he was appalled. I was so upset, I called the office back and explained to the receptionist, what happened how how badly I was treated. She stated that she, "heard the whole thing", and I am sure he was within earshot, since it is a very small office. I told her I wanted her to know my feelings since this must happen pretty frequently. Sad to say he lost two patients that day, hopefully his arrogant, and deeming attitude changes, or else he wont have much of a practice left. Go elsewhere. read more

Poor communicator, condescending and just not a great optometrist. When I went back to try and have a conversation with Dr. Rubenstein about my concerns with my distance vision, he very reluctantly increased my RX and had to make me feel inferior in the process. Thankfully, I found a new optometrist who properly evaluated me and issued a different RX. read more

This Dr is not only a fraud but he sells inferior products and did not even see a serious Cornea abnormality that two other doctors saw prior to sending me to a Cornea specialist who had to do surgery. Apart from that (if that is not enough) he placed progressive lenses in a frame that was too small for the prescription and then refused a refund. Don't let the "charm" fool you, like it did me ... if he was a professional he would have made good on the dollars spent! You would probably do better at a chain eye vision store read more

Dr. Steve is so personable, patient and helpful. He has a great selection of glasses and he made sure I found the perfect fit for my prescription, which is quite strong. Also he fitted me for contacts and helped me find the most comfortable pair of contacts I've worn in years. I've recommended him to everyone who asks, and the people who've gone to see him have all come back to thank me. Not recommended. I had to go back for several appointments and ended up with the same Rx I walked in with. The worst was the rudeness. Took another person ahead of me when I was waiting because, "I know this kid." Took a phone call from his insurance company during my appointment, and then complained about having to pay for his kid's dental surgery because his ex-wife did not fill out the right forms. Still get "reminder" emails from this practice although I have unsubscribed several times. I guess he did a decent job since I ended up with the same prescriptions I already had, minus $$$$. He is fully computerized and hooked up with the DMV, which is why I went there, but it's not worth it. read more

I just had a horrible experience with Dr. Rubinstein. He quoted my out of pocket cost for glasses to be MUCH more then it should have. Dishonest! Para todos me amigos hispanos. My insurance is one of many listed on Sound Shore's website. I called to confirm before coming to see the selection. Dr. Rubinstein at first was extremely helpful and quick to get the details of my insurance. I totally appreciated this as I also like to move fast. My child picked a pair and I asked what the total cost would be. He Quoted me just $100 off and $50 for the lenses. ( frame listed at $199) I corrected him and said i should also have an additional 60% off the remaining balance of the frame. He said he couldn't sell them at that price as he wouldn't be making any money, then thanked me and walked into another room. As to dismiss me. Probably knowing that I would also realize he shouldnt be charging me at all for the lenses as my insurance offers 100% coverage on lenses. I left and thanked him , he was short with me. Then as i was entering the car came out and handed me my insurance card. (hence the 1 star rating) and told me not to use his office as a showroom. REALLY! his selection is less then mediocre. needless to say I am married to a doctor therefore very knowledgeable of my rights. The false advertising of insurance is completely unethical! He should at the very least have lenses to offer at the price point United Healthcare covers. so my advice carry a copy of what your insurance covers if you have to shop there. read more

We had a frustrating experience with Dr. Rubinstein. He was dismissive, inattentive, consistently downplayed or ignored my daughter's errors while she was reading the charts and ultimately failed to provide her with a working pair of glasses. He took the money though. At initial visit while wearing lenses Dr. Rubinstein came up with my daughter was asked to read a sign across the street. She couldn't. He said "I don't believe you" and made the glasses with those lenses anyway. Her vision in these glasses was significantly worse than in her old glasses. He had to redo them, but the second version was no better. On third attempt the glasses were finally an improvement over her old ones, but still not good: she was squinting every now and then, complained of blurry letters and couldn't read number plates and signs where I (-4.50 and astigmatism) had no trouble in my under-powered (-4.25) glasses. In our final follow up visit she read charts again in her new glasses. She got a lot of letters wrong, there was even a line where she got just one letter right. Dr. Rubinstein, however, acted as if she got almost everything right and declared that she can see very well. That was bizarre, surreal even. When I pointed out that that's not the case he said he disagrees, that this is the best he can do, that we should seek a second opinion and showed us the door. Now we need to start over and pay again, all out of pocket, since Dr. Rubinstein used up our annual vision coverage. Update: new exam with another doctor followed by successful prescription that actually works confirmed that Mr. Rubinstein simply doesn't know how to measure eyesight. read more

Before you visit, ask yourself three questions: 1. Do you like your eyes.; 2. Do you like to see?; 3. Do you like good service? If you answered yes to any of these questions, then avoid this guy like the plague. I was outfitted for contacts and they took 6 weeks to arrive. Supposedly, it was the mailman's fault. Then he doesn't believe you when you tell him that the fit is making your eyes hurt or that you are getting headaches. Or, after pushing the subject, he tells you that you have to get used to it. He clearly has so much going on in his personal life that his business leaves much to be desired. What a waste of time - he is horrible. This is the worst service I have ever received. read more

This practice is run with really obvious care for the time and needs of the patient. They are efficient and organized, which is wonderful. You can even book appointments online!
