We bought a new build and quickly learned after moving in how loud noise transfers from the upstairs neighbors. The footsteps were so loud that stomping would wake us up constantly in the middle of the night. 3 months of living like that - it was soundproofing or move. TLDR: Pricey but worth it. Don't expect 100% silence. I bought a great new place last year in a hurry. The price was a steal, but the only problem was the L tracks that ran next to the building outside my bedroom window. Though I was in one of the higher floors, the sound of the train going over the tracks would fill the bedroom. After months of research I decided to go with Soundproof Chicago for an estimate. Mike came over shortly. He took measurements and explained to me the difference between them and their competitors. Although the price was steep, I really needed some quiet from the train because I'm a night owl and often sleep in. A couple months later the fabrication of the inserts were finished and ready for install. The window inserts have really helped. Nothing will prevent all of the sound from coming in but the reduction is noticeable and the windows actually look great. We have some particularly loud neighbors and the windows do a good job of reducing the sounds of kids yelling, skateboards, etc. that happen next our windows. We also hear much less of other day-to-day noises like dogs barking and car doors slamming. Not cheap, but I feel like it was money well spent for a more peaceful home. Everyone is very nice and helpful. I did have some communication & scheduling challenges and felt that I had to follow up a lot to get the install scheduled. Understandable given the demand for home improvement work right now; I just had to be extra on top of things to make it happen. We initially had Mike Ibarra come out to do window inserts for our bedrooms. We moved into a new construction condo in Lakeview and our windows apparently aren't very good so it was very noisy from traffic and the bar across the street. The inserts were fantastic- they deaden the normal sounds and even quiet down motorcycles and sirens enough that I can sleep through them. We also had problems with pounding footsteps from the people above us. We talked to Mike some more and decided to bite the bullet and have his group redo the ceilings in our master bedroom. His workers Joe, George, and Dave were very friendly and did fantastic work on a very labor intensive process (multiple layers of drywall, batting, isolation rails and soundproofing compound). They have many years of experience in doing this type of work and were nice enough to show me everything they were doing and how the process worked. They also kept everything remarkably clean- if you've ever worked with drywall you know how the dust gets everywhere- but they managed to keep it confined largely to the room being worked in. We have been very pleased with the results so far, the footfalls are still audible but much quieter and muffled. I am a lucky, lucky gal. I am so lucky that I once dated a guy who snored so horribly I got used to sleeping with earplugs. This came in handy when I purchased a home with a bedroom window that faced the train, but even with the earplugs in I could still tell you if the brown line was running on schedule. After six months of learning way more about my upstairs neighbor's tastes in music and tv than I ever could have wanted (in a new construction condo), we reached out to Soundproof Chicago. George and Joe did a tremendous job of ripping out the existing ceiling and insulation (however much you think is up there, there's more) while protecting my floors, cabinets, and other destroyables. They then added the various layers of drywall, insulation and sound absorbing compound, explaining to me with each step what they were doing and why. The most impressive part was their attention to detail with the removal and reinstallation of the many, many lights and speakers we had in the ceiling (Dave did a lot with this part of the project, too; like Joe and George, he's top notch). When we bought our house we thought 94 and Metra wouldn't be too bad. Especially since we had seen the house twice during the day and thought the traffic would just be white noise which is completely true until 7:30 PM when the traffic picks up. Purchasing a condo next to the El is undoubtedly a common occurrence in Chicago. Perhaps something one would get used to with typical double hung windows or picture windows. There are a few older conversion buildings that have large bays of windows from its industrial/commercial past. We are in that category. With window bays spanning 15' wide and 8' tall (see photos) and located on the 4th floor (2 floors above the El) the combination of street noise and El often proved a nuisance. This is where Michael (business) and his father Hector (installation) along with other family members and colleagues of Soundproof Chicago come in. From the beginning inquiry they were responsive via e-mail or telephone, transparent with their process and friendly throughout. Providing great options and solutions given our specific situation. We did a lot of research on ways to reduce the outside noise coming through our sliding door and windows. We found several companies that offered solutions. The most impressive was CitiQuiet, but they are in New York, and we're in Fort Lauderdale, Florida. We tried finding someone local, but the few we found kept pushing either a DIY job, which unless you're a contractor or work in construction, this is far from a DIY project. One closer location specialized in this, but said we would have to arrange for a local contractor to do the installation, and the owner said he would walk them through it over the phone. Plus, we would have to take delivery of the heavy windows and frames. Not ideal, because we live in a condo. They also wanted us to take the measurements, and while we can certainly measure windows, it can be tricky and we needed this to be accurate. We were looking for someone to do the complete job (BTW-one bedroom window space is slightly larger than the other bedroom window space). We finally called CitiQuiet in NYC, and explained the situation and were referred to their affiliate in Chicago, Soundproof Chicago. We explained how we wanted someone to handle the project from A-Z, and they said they absolutely could. We even wanted our windows tinted, and they also coordinated that with a company out of Orlando. We were impressed when Michael Ibarra of Soundproof Chicago said he would fly down, at his expense, to do the consultation and measurements. This is before any commitment or signed contract. Mike is awesome, super nice, very knowledgeable, and walked us through the entire process, and explained the options with no pressure or upselling. I was even wanting their 1" double glass for the balcony sliding doors, thinking it would maximize the soundproofing, but he showed me how it might not need that more expensive option, plus with our large balcony doors, the 1" glass might not be feasible. After meeting with him, we knew we had made the right choice. After providing a down payment, the windows were ordered, and after about 6 weeks, they were installed (It took a little longer due to coordinating long distance logistics and the pandemic). Mike, his father and Xavier flew down to do the install. They managed it all, making sure everything was done to specs, and all condo rules were followed. They even have a patent on their window framing system, so it's a unique feature in doing the best job of dampening sound vibrations. We knew the windows would help reduce outside noise, but didn't know how much it'd help until we experienced the difference after the install was complete (they finished in a little more than a day). It's amazing just how much outside noise is blocked. We live on the Intracoastal Waterway across from a popular restaurant, and with customers leaving late at night, and the late night cleaning crew getting started, there can be a lot of noise. Also, some boats cruising by will play their music too loud. In the morning, delivery and garbage trucks and leaf blowers start arriving, plus the restaurant has live bands outside on weekend afternoons and evenings. We now hear very little to none of that anymore. I had been using a white noise generator in my bedroom to try to drown out all the noise, now I don't even need it. Thanks to Mike and his team for restoring our peace, and being able to keep our condo versus selling it and moving, plus this adds resale value. It saddens me to post a bad review but we had to cancel our business with this company. When we called the first time for an estimate everything seemed to work fine but after we made the first payment they forgot about us as clients. Their customer service was horrible, they did not follow up promptly and we had to send multiple messages to get a update on the order. We were told the windows were being made which made no sense as they consultant had not taken proper measurements! He finally came and said it was going to be a couple of weeks. Then coronavirus happened (not their fault of course) but their lack of communication was unacceptable. We never got an email from them to see what was their plan or at least a courtesy message as most companies have been doing. Almost 3 months after the first deposit we got fed up and cancelled them. We live in Roscoe Village, and are the middle unit in a 3 flat condo building. Since we moved in, we'd discussed soundproofing our bedroom ceiling, as we constantly hear every step and noise above us. The building was built in 2001, and they did virtually no insulating between floors. We finally had Michael come out to do an evaluation, and from the moment we met him were so impressed. He took the time to explain exactly what they would recommend doing, and even dissuaded us from soundproofing our attached bath, explaining that just doing the bedroom and shutting the door would eliminate noises. I was so impressed that he didn't take that opportunity to upsell us. Throughout the week-long project, Michael's entire team was respectful, clean, prompt and professional. This is a long overdue review. We live in the Central Business district, where motorcycles, three wheelers and sirens are 24/7. We were planning on moving, as things just keep getting louder and louder every year....even though we love our home and where it's located. As one last attempt to save our City life, we called Soundproof Chicago. Mike came out to speak with us, measure our windows (one bedroom wall of floor to ceiling windows, and 2nd bedroom with 2 wall to ceiling window walls and sliding doors) and showed us how he manages to insert a second set of windows without any de traction from the aesthetics or size of the rooms. He then contacted us the next day with a quote for the whole job. It took a month or so, for the windows to be custom made, as we were in the middle of COVID. But when they came in, we were contacted, and made an appointment to have them installed. Our installer showed up on time, knew what he was doing, and was very meticulous about the whole job. They blend in so well, I forget they are there. They have reduced our noise by 95%!!! We don't hear any of the motorcycles, trucks backing up or sirens! Home saved!! This really works, no joke...with no downtime, no mess and your peace and quiet back!! We have had them for 6 months or so now, and appreciate them on a DAILY basis. Typically Chicago story for us. We buy a condo and are so excited to move in. After a few days we realize we can hear just about everything going on above us. The bedroom becomes the biggest problem disturbing our sleep at night. So we decide to see what can be done about it. We have Mike out for a quote. He is very professional and knows his stuff. This isn't going to be the cheapest activity since we decided we wanted the most aggressive approach which involves completely ripping down the existing ceiling and replacing it with one properly put up with sound proofing in mind. Mike hired an extra guy for for the first day which help speed the process up and get us back in our bedroom. Mike always showed up on time and fit with the time guidelines I had set, which was great. After the job was complete Mike and his crew did a great job cleaning up and painted everything nicely. Now down to the nuts and bolts. Last night the was the first night we got in there. The neighbors were in rare form at about 4am. I could still here some noise up there but it was reduced dramatically and my girlfriend didn't even wake up. In the past we have been chased out of our bedroom because the loudness was unbearable. Now I think it is manageable and that is what we are looking for. Its not perfect but its nice to know that its the best it can be considering you have someone above. After 3 years we finally decided to pull the trigger on soundproofing our living room. Of course the first and only person we contacted was Mike Ibarra. We had such an amazing experience the first time around that it was a no-brainer. The job took 2 weeks (we choose to leave on vacation during that time) and just so you know, this type of sound mitigation isn't for the faint of heart. It is intensive, expensive, messy, and a crap-load of hard work. It was a lot less stressful this time around when i didn't have to see the different stages every day. But i trust Mike explicitly and i knew his guys (his cousins) Joe and George would be working on our place again. I had the pleasure of watching them work on our bedroom 3 years ago and they were amazing. They were always on time and super respectful, and just really really hardworking guys. So, knowing that they would be working on our living room gave me a huge sense of peace. They are awesome and patient and i love them!!!! I can be a little bossy and controlling, so of course i was texting daily to see how all of the progress was going. I got daily photos and info every step of the way. A new addition to the previous footfall noise we had been experiencing was that of an exuberant toddler (toddlers and hardwood = hell). Again, it is unrealistic to expect 100% sound reduction, but it is conservatively 75% better and of course will get even better as the Green Glue cures. It is awesome and i freegin' LOVE IT. I brought Michael in for an estimate on soundproofing our bedroom from impact noise. We ended up having him install a ceiling to our back deck so we could enjoy a dry space. Michael is very courteous and professional. I explained to him that we'd like to hold off on soundproofing just now but would he be able to install a deck ceiling, also known as a deck drainage system. Michael researched products and found one that fit our budget. We now have a dry back deck so we can cook out during summer rains and also not have to sweep up debris from the upper decks. There were a could initial leaks (small) and Michael came out on a Sunday and made all the repairs - happily. See my profile for before and after pics. Now the soundproofing.... Mike and his guys are all amazing: punctual, fair, diligent, sweet, and great at staying in touch through the project. Mike is hands-down the best contractor we've ever worked with. It sounds small, but I really appreciate how comfortable with technology Mike is, as it makes staying in touch way easier (he's cool with email, texting, etc.). A lot of contractors seem to prefer phone calls, which can be harder to do when you think of something at night or during a meeting at work (oops...). And he does his estimates and contracts as .pdfs and emails them to you. In terms of the sound isolation: it works. We had Mike do five room ceilings and two sides of a big wall running through the middle of our apartment in a 1920s two-flat--decoupling the ceilings and walls from the joists/studs and muffling the sound from above with double-layer drywall and sound-dampening caulk (Green Glue) sandwiched between the layers or drywall. In short, the result was a livable space, where previously we felt bombarded with/jolted by footfall from the child and adults living above us. Mike was clear that the Green Glue compound stuff says it take 30 days to cure and really kick-in and that has proven absolutely true. We we're blown away by the sound dampening right upon the finishing of the project, but now we are. My wife and I used to talk about the impact noise all the time and now we almost never do--a welcome reprieve. Mike is super flexible and the guys he works with are skilled and great people. And, as a bonus, his dad is an awesome painter and has super reasonable rates. We'll be using Mike again for the final big ceiling in our place, once is really needs replacing. I have been waiting weeks to be able to give a great review for the soundproof windows. I can't believe I'll be out of $$3000 for two windows sized 80x42. I have a 2 story new construction home about 2 blocks from the redline. Living in this home with the train noise has been a nightmare. I figured I would attempt to reduce the noise before I decide to sell my home. 1. Customer service was not good. Michael said someone would call to set up appt. I had to call to get actual install date and no call the day before to confirm. Michael was happy to help whenever I did call him. I asked him how much of a difference in the noise will I experience and he said 75%. I was ectastic!! 2. The noise is maybe 5 decibels lower and that's being generous. I measure the sound on the first floor compared to where they installed the windows on the 2nd floor. I really feel like crying right now considering how much this job set me back. I just bought this house for 400k just 2 months ago and now I have to sell it plus 3k down the drain. After the installers finished today I measured the decibels using an app and its still very loud. I can still hear pretty much everything as before. I'm so disappointed in this service. I'm not sure who wrote all these great reviews because 5 stars was not my experience. I'm writing this review with a little annoyance. I searched for Soundproof to leave a review and saw a 1 star right in the first few reviews right off the bat. I didn't actually check Yelp before I used Soundproof and we were referred to them. Keep in mind that being referred doesn't always work out ;). Anyways, my issue is the fact that a guy who didn't actually utilize the service can leave a 1 star. I've always thought Yelp should provide several (3-5) categories to rate to aggregate a score to deter this behavior. No judgement against the guy but his review makes it seem like he didn't actually try that hard. More to support my feelings below. I made you read enough so simply put a great product and service provided by Soundproof Chicago. They stand out from the recent experiences I've had. I recently moved to a new construction and have had to deal with over 8 different contractors for varying items and these guys have been the best. They manufacture, install, and are the go to for everything. I am on a busy, if not the busiest, stretch of Ashland Avenue in Lincoln Park and these windows have reduced almost every noise. You get the occasional older rust bucket or blaring motorcycle but even then it's like heaven. I wouldn't even consider another product. Not having to deal with this before, I thought cost was high but these windows are worth every single penny on the dollar. I went through the website and got a response in a very reasonable timeframe. I worked with Mike from the start and the guy just cares. 75% of the other contractors I worked with that even come in at 50% of the effort Mike made to provide the service he has. There were times of a 1 day delay but I've gone weeks and months without hearing from other contractors or me having to reach out. From order to install, Soundproof was great on communication. Back to Mike caring, he was very attentive to the product and our concerns and executed against them accordingly. We are extremely happy with the results and Soundproof Chicago would be our go to for any soundproofing needs. Although it appears the 1 star rating has not affected their overall score, I'd encourage others to look at that as a one off. This is not meant to be excuse for anyone in the service industry but for a high volume small shop that puts the details into the quality controls like Soundproof does, they set the bar high for what you get value:cost. read more

Mainly here to say that they need to update their website, as they wasted both our time...and the customer service I experienced left something to be desired. They only do soundproof windows now. I need my bedroom ceiling and walls soundproofed (upstairs neighbors are the WORST). They came highly recommended by a friend who used their services within the last two years for this exact purpose. I go to their website, where there are pages about their residential wall and ceiling soundproofing, various methods, so I email to set up a consultation. Bummer begins. They email me back, and have clearly mixed me up with someone else, calling me Erik, and confirming a consultation for windows (a service I didn't request) on a date I'm not available. I reply, telling them they've mixed me up, and reconfirming what I need...and get a reply back that they "...no longer soundproof ceilings or walls. Our owners have decide to focus more on there (sic) window part of our company since we stated (sic) selling them internationally. At this time I do not have any companies I can refer you to." I'm annoyed, as they still sell themselves as residential soundproofing on Home Advisor, google, etc, and their website still offers this service. When your name has the word "Chicago" in it, it seems like you'd focus on Chicago, not international window sales. Its a shame, as their reviews are glowing for this exact service, not even 6 months ago, and I was ready to throw all my money at them haha! read more

This is the 2nd time I hired Soundproof Chicago to install insulated and sound dampening ceilings. From start to finish these guys were professional, efficient, and extremely talented at their workmanship. They took on a major job replacing 2000 square feet of ceilings) and did everything they could from day 1 to finish the job in a timely manner. Whenever we ran into an unexpected snag or even when I asked part way through the job to help me install canned lights, they were helpful and willing to work around my new scope. It's a real pleasure to work with such a great group of guys. Their prices are reasonable and they know what they are doing in the soundproofing game. Seriously have these guys out to talk through your options! No job is too big and they will give you the honest scoop and great options for soundproofing or insulation. Great company to work with. Initial quote was quick and simple. Put down payment and windows are ordered. Installation was great, owner himself came out and did the work. Work was great, kept room clean and cleaned up after. They were on time, actually came 15 minutes early to make sure work starts exact time that they stated. I will do business gain with them when I need to soundproof windows in the future. I would ask is keep communication open once windows are ordered and are being manufactured. read more

I asked Mike to provide an estimate for soundproofing the ceiling in my master bedroom after I moved into my new condo and found that I could hear almost everything going on above me. The price was steep, but I really value my sleep so I decided to go for the most aggressive solution (tearing down the existing ceiling and replacing it with a new one). Mike was very professional (he provided estimates quickly and we signed a contract before starting the work) and got the job started almost immediately. I travel for work during the week, so I left a key with Mike and he let himself into my condo to work while I was away. He called me occasionally during the week to give me status updates. By the time I got back home the job was finished (it took 4 days). I was impressed with the results the first night after having the job completed and it got progressively better over the next month. Now I can barely hear any noise from above (although I can still faintly hear loud footsteps from above) and I am able to sleep undisturbed. That said, the job left me a couple of surprises. First, painting the new ceiling wasn't included in the estimate, so I was left with exposed drywall. I take partial blame for this for not asking about painting in advance, but it would have been nice if the information had been offered up front. Second, I have 12 foot ceilings, so Mike and his team had to use a special platform (as opposed to regular ladders) to reach the ceiling. This platform was apparently kind of difficult to maneuver, so it seems they bumped it off the baseboards around the bottom of the wall, which left a lot of chips in the paint. I ultimately fixed this myself. Overall, I am very pleased with the work and I would definitely recommend Mike and his team to anyone who is struggling with excess noise. read more

I've lived in my condo for almost 3 years, and have had significant issues with noise from my upstairs neighbors from the start. I have slept through the night only a handful of times due to noise from above in the past 3 years, which has had a huge affect on my quality of life. I made multiple attempts to work with my neighbors to no avail, so finally decided to move forward with soundproofing. Mike and his crew just completed the soundproofing of my living room and bedroom. Mike and his team were friendly, professional, always receptive to my questions, and generally great to work with. Mike explained the process in detail prior to beginning the work, and answered my calls, emails, and texts throughout the job. They were very clean and respectful of my space - furniture, hardwood floors, etc. Of course I had to do some cleaning today, but nothing that I didn't expect - just some relatively light dusting. Given the extent of the work completed, I am pleasantly surprised that I didn't have to clean more myself. Last night was my first night here post-soundproof. I heard my neighbors walking around in the living room, but the sound was significantly muffled compared to before. Most important to me, I slept through the night and woke up feeling rested and refreshed. I am SO glad that I finally had this done, and wish I hadn't waited 3 years! If you're in a position like I was - sell your home or soundproof - I wholeheartedly recommend Mike and the team of Soundproof Chicago. read more

Delivered product as expected. Workers were polite and trustworthy. It took about a week to demo and rebuild a shared wall in my condo. Left the workers unsupervised multiple times, no problems at all. Sound has been greatly reduced. Previous wall was just drywall with insulation, and conversations could be heard between units. read more
