We decided to be adventurous with our Pho option and man are we glad we took the chance. This place is small so going a little off hours will be ideal, but the staff is super kind and the food! We had pho which was on the sweeter side but still delicious, and tan tan men, which was AMAZING! The chashu was really well done. It's been a while since I've visited the Porter Square area and my visits to this area is usually for either Yume ramen or udon. I saw Soup Shack while in the area for the neighboring toy store and decided to order some food for dinner. Atmosphere - We went in January 2022 when Omicron is at it's peak and asked if we could sit in. There was one individual sitting in one of their 4 (?) tables and the row of bar style seating along the wall was empty. The owner, I presume, said that they were done seating people for dine in for the day. Not too sure what that means for people looking for a place to sit down in. Maybe they have a cap per day? Food - We ordered the Tonkotsu Ramen, Duck Noodle Soup, and the Thai Iced Tea. The drink was well balanced in terms of sweetness and tea flavor, thumbs up for this one. As for the food, since we could not eat in, we left and drove about 30 minutes home to eat. The soup was still nice and hot after the drive home! Portion size was also generous. Unfortunately, the taste is what brings the review down to 3 stars today. Both the soups were very SWEET. The Duck Noodle Soup I somewhat expected but the Tonkotsu was not savory at all and seemed cloudy in the way that miso soup separates after being left alone for a while. Not something that I've experienced with other Tonkotsu broths before. As mentioned before, the drink was quite good so I may look for this place when in the mood for a Thai Iced Tea. Lived in the area for some time and have always meant to stop in. Perfect and convenient for a cold night. Took a seat at their small bar seating and was helped immediately. Service was great and super fast. The Dirty Ramen is great; warm with a little spice, but overall savory and flavorful. There are multiple locations (JP, brookline, Porter) and I can attest that the quality is consistent across all locations. Love that they require proof of vaccination (props) to dine in. The tan tan men broth is hearty and rich with a great chew to the noodles. Love the double pork (both ground and cha-shu). None of the visits left me impressive nor satisfied. I only tried non-spicy stuff. All soups I tried, Pho, Ramen, Duck Noodle Soup, etc, are a bit TOO SWEET to me! They ought to be savory. The *Roast Duck Rice Bowl* is also sweet but it goes better with rice. Fried chicken appetizer is BIG in portion. Be mindful before ordering, it might make you full quicker than you planned. Good food but very limited seating. I arrived with a friend on Saturday at 2pm, but the place was still packed due to the limited seating. There's only about 6 bar seats and then three or four small tables towards the back for slightly bigger groups. During the warmer months, there is outdoor seating available, but in the winter, it seems like many people just resort to takeout. Nonetheless, my friend and I did not have to wait long for seats to open up. The thai iced tea was the perfect amount of creamy milk and sweet tea, and the karaage chicken appetizer was fried perfectly but left us wishing for more. I've never had Tom Yum soup before so the flavor was unexpected for me (it definitely has the traditional Thai peanut-y, sweet and citrusy aftertaste), but I still finished my very large portioned bowl and was left extremely full. They were most definitely generous with the veggies, fish balls and meat added with the noodles-- enough for my friend to request a container to bring leftovers home. I noticed a new Soup Shack location added to grubhub, so my boyfriend and I ordered some Pho and Bao Buns to try. Wow wow wow. The Pho broth was so incredibly rich and amazing. Fried oysters, service, portion sizes: 5 stars Noodle soups: 4 stars I wasn't expecting much from Soup Shack given their diverse menu (ramen, pho, thai noodle soups), but I was pleasantly surprised. The fried oysters were excellent -- freshly fried and crispy, large juicy oysters. The thai iced tea was pretty standard. The Pho Tai (rare steak) broth was good, but the steak was a bit lean and tough. The shoyu ramen had a decent broth though a bit porky for my tastes -- I asked for the least sweet of the ramen broths and it definitely wasn't sweet so that was nice (they said that all of their other broths were sweet to some degree)! The portion sizes are huge and I left clutching my stomach. The bok choy side addition ($3) is generously sized and fresh. There are tons of noodles and a decent amount of other toppings as well. The broths are good but not amazing, and the noodles and toppings are also standard in quality. Overall I would rather go to Yume/Tsurumen/Santouka for ramen, and Le's for pho, but if your group is craving multiple types of noodle soups, this is definitely a solid place with reasonable prices! Are ramen noodles considered soup? Well they're served at Soup Shack so they probably are, today I visited the newly opened Soup Shack in Cambridge, MA serving a large assortment of Vietnamese and Japanese noodle dishes. For the appetizers I had the Kaki fry which is deep fried breaded oysters served with Katsu mayo sauce. These were surprisingly good. The breading was nice and crunchy while the oyster inside was extremely hot and had a very soft texture. If the ocean became deep fried and crunchified it would taste like the kaki fry. I also had Chicken karaage whenever they have this on the menu, I can't help myself but get it. The Japanese style lightly battered fried chicken is one of the ultimate appetizers in my opinion and Soup Shack did not disappoint, Deep fried, chicken goodness. For my main meal I had Dirty Ramen, an interesting name with a flavor that's so clean. The Dirty Ramen consist of Spicy pork broth with fermented bean curd, cha-shu pork , Cha-shu pork (Marinated Braised Pork Belly), bean sprouts, menma (Japanese Bamboo), wood ear mushroom, scallions, sesame seeds, spicy chili vinegar, nori and togarashi. All of this works so well together, it was spicy yet balanced, and the Cha-shu pork was melt in your mouth tender. The ramen noodles were a bit on the firm side which isn't to my preference however it soaked up the delicious broth very well. Overall it was a great experience trying out a new restaurant.
