We were craving some comforting ramen on a cold night in Quebec city. There isn't much in terms of…read moreramen in QC so we headed to this spot as it had pretty solid reviews. However being from Vancouver where ramen is plentiful and so damn good, this left us feeling pretty underwhelmed. We waited about 40 minutes to get a table - I guess we went on a really busy evening (which oddly enough was a Sunday) and people ahead of us said "it's worth the wait". Unfortunately for us it wasn't. So where did it go wrong for us you ask? While the staff was really kind, it was a bit slow going - I had to ask for my drink order twice for my sister and I. It finally came with my soup. We had a salad to start called the Wafu salad - a Japanese chefs salad with Wafu dressing. While the dressing was the best part, there wasn't much on the deconstructed salad of corn, bell peppers, crunchy noodle, daikon, and lettuce, the salad was also served on a really awkward dish where the contents falls off the edges as you try to grab a bit of everything. Up next were the ramens - I got the Miso - Shallot, bean sprouts, nori, naruto, pork chashu and 1/2 egg and corn - I also got a 1/2 egg added for $1.50. If you're going to serve ramen for nearly $20 - you need to supply a full egg, that's just silly to only give a halfer. The first thing I noticed about the ramen was it was lacking broth - by the time I started getting into it, the noodles had soaked up a lot of it and I was left with mostly noodles - not great. The broth itself was flavourful so if it just had more of it, it'd be a better ramen. The corn was also odd for me and I didn't love that addition. My sister and moms was worse - my sis got the Vegetarian and my mom got the Yasai Miso. The vegetarian had so much stuff on top that again it takes away from the broth (which was also non-existent). My mothers was the same - the vegetables were just a bunch of cabbage lobbed ontop. Unfortunately I can't recommend this spot for ramen - the mediocre food is not worth it or the lineup to get it. The restaurant also looks much cuter in photos online than it was in-person - it lacks character in the decor.

We walked over and it wasn't too busy on a Sunday night. It's not a big space - maybe enough to seat 30 people. It's simply decorated, and some specials were written on blackboards on the wall. We basically both the miso and the shoyu ramen, and they were both good. They were a good size, and reasonably priced. Service was friendly and helpful. Why am I giving 3 out of 5 stars? It was a good meal, but nothing memorable about it. It's very similar to other ramen places I've been to, so in a few weeks, I might not remember much about my visit other than it filled me up, and there's nothing wrong with that. It would be dependable place to get a meal.

If you bring the kids, may be the kids plats is the way to go as you get the Taffy included.

While it's true that I know what to expect when ordering Vietnamese fare in San Francisco I learned…read morethat doing so in Quebec City's Saint-Sauveur neighborhood is a whole different ballgame. Restaurant Jardin du Vietnam is an all-inclusive experience. Every meal here is a multi-course affair that moves from soup to appetizer plate to entree and dessert. Alcohol isn't offered but guests are welcome to BYOB and there's no corkage or other associated fees. It's fair to say that you'll leave Restaurant Jardin du Vietnam very full for a reasonable price even if what you've consumed looks nothing like your typical order from a Vietnamese restaurant in San Francisco. The only decisions to be made here pertain to your choice of entree and dessert. At my table our entree orders included Poulet (chicken) Curry ($25.95CAN, and a bit one-note) and a Shrimp/Scallop dish ($32.95CAN, pristine but bland in flavor). The latter was chosen because it featured vermicelli (aka rice noodles) which are often featured in favorite Vietnamese dishes back home. But there's a silver lining here; the entire experience of the place is interesting and sort of fun and though the food wasn't my favorite version of Vietnamese fare I liked, overall, what was on offer. Several tables were filled with parties of 4, early and known to the restauranteurs, and covered with wine bottles, evidence that Restaurant Jardin has a local fan base. The restaurant itself is authentically ornate and unique to the area. And the multi-course experience is leisurely and enjoyable. Accompanied with such reasonable prices (1CAN$ = .75 US) it was easy to imagine how Restaurant Jardin could become a favorite amongst locals seeking something a bit different. It might not have been my favorite version of Vietnamese fare but I enjoyed the overall experience.

I ate here with my family and we got to try a variety of dishes. We got the lasagna, the mushroom soup, French onion soup, salad nicoise, and my favorite cigare au choux which is essentially cabbage rolls with tomato soup. I enjoyed each and every dish, but the cigare au choux stole my heart. The service was also fantastic! The woman who helped us was so sweet and patient as my family decided on what to eat. With the dynamic trio of Philippe Racine, Philippe Fournier, and Andréa Beauseigle at the helm, this newly minted bistro is not just a meal; it's an experience that speaks to the heart of local gastronomy. As we stepped into the inviting atmosphere of Bistro St. Malo, we were immediately struck by the relaxed ambience that feels both chic and comforting. The decor is a perfect marriage of rustic elegance and modern flair, setting the stage for an unforgettable evening. The menu, crafted with both passion and precision, beckoned us to explore a variety of tempting dishes. We kicked off our culinary journey with the Mussels Marinière, bathed in a heavenly concoction of wine and garlic. Each bite was a succulent reminder of the sea, perfectly paired with crusty bread that could easily become a new best friend. Next on the list was the Soupe à l'Oignon, a classic French onion soup that was nothing short of a warm hug in a bowl. The rich broth, adorned with a gooey layer of melted cheese, transported us straight to a cozy Parisian bistro. Now, if you think escargots are just a fancy way to say "snails," think again. The Escargots Gratinés at Bistro St. Malo are a revelation, baked to perfection with a garlicky herb butter that made us rethink our long-held beliefs about these little treasures. For the main event, we indulged in the Joue de Bœuf sauce Robert, a sous-vide masterpiece that had been lovingly cooked for 30 hours. The beef cheek was so tender it practically melted on the fork, paired with a creamy potato purée and vegetables roasted in duck fat--a dish that could make even the most steadfast vegetarian reconsider their choices. We couldn't resist diving into the Ragoût de la Mer, a seafood stew that was a celebration of the ocean's bounty. With scallops, shrimp, lobster, cod, tuna, and salmon mingling in a rich bisque, this dish was a symphony of flavors that sang the praises of the fresh local products so central to the bistro's philosophy. Bistro St. Malo is more than just a meal; it's a culinary journey that pays homage to both French tradition and the vibrant tastes of the Mediterranean. If you find yourself wandering the charming streets of Quebec City, do yourself a favor and make your way to 75 St-Paul Street. You might just discover your new favorite dining spot.
