While I'm a big fan of smoothies and smoothie bowls, I know my limitations when it comes to making 'em: quit it, yours will never be as good. On a hot July day, I was looking for a location to grab lunch and get some work done outside of the house. I never take smoothie bowls to go and tend to enjoy right away on site, but surprisingly they do not offer wifi here. Something I'd definitely suggest as an offering, especially for people who don't live or work immediately nearby. I ordered their magic dragon bowl, which I thought was a great consistency with plentiful toppings, but too small of a serving overall. If you're looking for a meal replacement, I would look at other options on their menu. I stopped at South Block for the first time last week and tried one of their smoothies. I must have really enjoyed it because I found myself there again this week and ordered one of their acai bowls. If you're like me and have cravings for something sweet but healthy, South Block is the perfect solution. The first time I stopped at South Block I ordered the super green smoothie with ginger and whey protein. It was thick but nice and refreshing so I really enjoyed it. The second time I decided I had to try one of their acai bowls so I ordered the killer b bowl. The only other place I've tried an acai bowl from is Vitality Bowl, and I must say between the two South Block takes the win. Their fruits and the acai itself were very fresh and vibrant, i loved it! They also provide a bottle of honey and chia seeds at the pick up counter in case you want to add either to your order. Of course I put both in my bowl and it tasted wonderful. The only downside I saw was the bowls are a little smaller (and therefore you get less fruit) compared to ones at Vitality Bowl for roughly the same price point. However, aside from that I would recommend South Block any day and unfortunately (for my wallet), I will be back here for more. read more

Overall, it's expensive, but it's one of the only specialized acai/smoothie shops in the area so it's popularity is not surprising. So far I've tried the PBJ acai bowl, health nut smoothie, and mermaid bowl, and the mermaid bowl was the only one I didn't particularly like. I've never had it as a full meal, but it's a nice afternoon snack to share with a buddy. PBJ ACAI BOWL ($10) This was the first time I tried an acai bowl with peanut butter, and I was very impressed!! It's very thick and the peanut butter is strong, but with the granola and fruit it's a very cool and refreshing treat. HEALTH NUT (Regular $8/Large $10) I had a salad for lunch and felt like I needed a little something more, so I decided to get this smoothie since it had almonds in it. It was VERY filling and helped me power through an afternoon study session! I wasn't even that hungry for dinner, but being the animal that I am I still ate a normal dinner portion. I would definitely recommend this as breakfast or with a light lunch. MERMAID BOWL ($11) This one just tasted.. off. Or too sour. I think it was from the pineapple juice/too fruity but if you like that then this is for you I guess. I purchase a Craft Your Own Açaí Bowl. It was very good, fresh, and the portions of everything was well balanced. The people who work there were kind and the order didn't take long to be prepared. There's seating area and it's clean with large windows that let a lot of light in so it's a nice place to sit if you can find space. The price came out to about $16, which in my opinion is a bit over priced, so I'm not sure if I'd get it again. read more

Pretty impressed with the service here. The crowd is what you'd expect: young, healthy millennials, they've got a cute neon sign that tells you to believe in yourself, allll the healthy customizations for superfoods and whatever else wellness gurus are touting these days. Love the food but it seems like it takes a good 10 minutes to make an order. Not only that but every time I ask for my order "to go" they almost never make it to go, and when I have to put the lid on, all of the nutella ends up on the lid and not in the bowl. They should really look into putting drizzles (nutella, pb, etc) under the fruit when someone gets an order to go like most places. The peanut butter bowl is quite amazing with a balance between sweet and savory that fulfills your hunger. I'm brand new to Virginia and was really hesitant to try out an açaí bowl in the East Coast, but I stopped by South Block and was more than impressed with the endless variety in bowls. I got the PB&J and it's so well-blended and generously topped with granola, banana, and blueberries. It's one of the best I've had, if I'm quite honest. Prices are steep, but that's to be expected at any juice bar? I also got a Caveman Milk, which was ok but I wouldn't repurchase. I came here twice in August 2019 while working in the Ballston area. The first time was to get an evening snack around 7:30 PM, and the second time was to grab lunch with coworkers. Both times were on weekdays. This location is not a long walk from the Ballston metro station. The space is pretty small, but there's still a couple of tables inside for dining in. When I came in the evening, it was basically empty. The staff were already starting to clean up since the place closes at 8 PM on weeknights, but I was not rushed when ordering or eating (I did finish eating in like 10 minutes though, as I'd ordered a mini bowl). When I came for lunch, the store was a lot busier, which is pretty typical for all South Block locations I've been to in DC. The staff do tend to work pretty quickly to get through all the orders. The store was clean and cutely decorated; I especially liked the neon "Believe in yourself" sign over the seating area. The tables had motivational things printed on them as well. I imagine this makes things more Instagrammable. My orders were always prepared to my satisfaction, and what I would expect from a South Block location. There's a lot of good places to eat in this area, but South Block is still my favorite source for açaí bowls. read more

Since I attend Marymount University, I've been wanting to try SouthBlock but never got the chance. When I heard it opened at Ballston my friend and I took a little trip to Ballston and grab some and it was so amazing. Obviously it just opened and the employees were super friendly. There were so many options for açaí bowls, smoothies, etc. I had a hard time picking, honestly. I went with the Aqua bowl and man did it change my life. I was no longer a SouthBlock virgin! This place is great. The staff always seem to be enjoying themselves and having a great day. Chatting with both the customers and each other. A lot of interaction going on, which really seems to fit along with their goals of being a community and One Block. Sometimes it can be hard to hear people because the music is a little loud. I can't say enough about South Block. I've been to a number of their locations (Clarendon, Rosslyn, Ballston, and Falls Church) but frequent the Ballston location the most. There is nothing more refreshing on a hot day than their smoothies. I'm always torn between the Mango Mania and the Strawberry Passion. They also have puppy bowls which my dog Crosby absolutely loves! Obviously the smoothies and bowls are great but what really makes South Block special is the staff.
