Sate co operates in various locations; the one I visited was at GW Hospital on a weekday lunch. They had a steady stream of people even at lunch time. Decent portions for my Sumatra platter. The beef rendang was tender, nicely packed full of flavor, and spicy. My little one loved the chicken satay and sautéed vegetables- I think she loved eating the meat off a stick the most. I had the pleasure of visiting this little food truck recently thanks to my building! I placed my order online earlier in the day and decided to go with the Sumatra Platter which includes the Chicken Sate AND the beef curry (a little something for everyone)! The portions were huge, mainly because they stuff the box with so much rice. I would have liked a little more sauce to go with all that rice but everything was still tasty. The sate was your typical chicken skewers with a sweet peanut sauce. It was good but nothing special stood out about it. The beef curry on the other hand was shown a little more love and you can tell that it wasn't just thrown together to simmer for 5 mins, because the flavors of the spices in the sauce were so developed and really shined through. I could have personally used some more salt, but that's a quick fix at home. Oh yeah, it is spicy so if you can't do spicy..don't. But if you are a dragon, they also have their EXTRA spicy beef curry. Surprisingly my favorite part of the meal were the CORN FRITTERS! Who would have thought?! I remember when I first saw them in the box I thought to myself "these would probably be good with a nice dipping sauce" but NOPE, you don't even need that. I really miss Satay Sarinah, but I am glad that they kept the truck alive. Sate Truck provides some really delicious Indonesian cuisine. I usually get the Java Platter, which is chicken sate, chicken curry, rice, vegetables, and corn fritters (bakwan jagung). I wish they offered their spicy chicken (ayam bumbu rujak), but this platter is filling and tasty. The first time I had the corn fritters, they were not my favorite, but I've grown to love them. The chicken curry is really flavorful. The vegetables could use some improvement--they tend to be overcooked. I've had the Sumatra Platter, which replaces the curry with the beef rendang, and that is some spicy goodness right there. I appreciate the spicy chile sauce you can add to any meal. I hope to try the mie ayam soon. I love Indonesian cuisine, so I'm thrilled that this truck is usually only a block away from work. read more

Ever since Cafe Asia closed (RIP to one of my favorite college standbys), it's been impossible to find Indonesian food in the District unless you have an Indonesian friend who takes pity upon you and invites them to your house for good eats. I sadly do not have any Indonesian friends (but would love to have one...any takers?!?) so I had to seek solace in the Sate Truck which I found parked outside of the National Portrait Gallery one lucky day! Their chicken curry is bomb, sweetly scented of coconut milk and lots of chunks of juicy tender chicken and potatoes within. It's one of my favorite dishes in the world and they definitely do justice here. The other day I decided to go outside of my comfort zone and try their combo meal which had beef rendang (marinated beef simmered for hours in Indonesian spices, curry sauce, and roasted desiccated coconut...dare you to read that without drooling), their namesake sate, rice, corn fritters, and veggies. At $11, it was a great deal and the food was filling, delicious and a fun way to try out a lot of new things at once. Also a little bit spicy -- it totally awakened all my senses at one time! State Department, Indonesia, here I go! So many different cuisines to try and it never hurts to try something new with these trucks and carts popping up. Found this truck and checked out their style. The food from these islands are similar to Malaysia & Singapore cuisine so think spices, a bit salty, with savoriness and tenderness. I ordered the "Mie Ayam": the braised chicken noodles. The chicken was braised with mushrooms, celery, onions, scallions, and Indonesian spices and served over noodles garnished with chicken fried wontons. It was packed with flavor and a nice portion; the wontons were a nice touch. The noodles looked and tasted like ramen noodles which isn't bad although I was hoping they'd be thicker and wider but flavors are there. They've got other dishes like the beef curry and chicken satay; I'll be vying for these when they come back around. You're probably thinking of getting your usual sandwich/tacos/pizza/burgers on your lunch breaks. The skepticism surrounding different types of eats will be erased when tasting something like this. They use to come by my job on the Westend, but lately I've been following them in Twitter to find out where they are. One of the best times I ate off this food truck was when we went to the H street Festival. You'd think that with the long lines, the heat and the massive festival that their quality might come down but nope, they were stellar as usual. This Food Truck deserves your attention. The Indonesian food is really good. BUT, these guys have completely changed their business model based on the pandemic. They have on-line ordering, pay on-line and then they text you when it is ready to pick up approximately 30 minutes later. They wear face masks and gloves and everyone I saw in the steady line was practicing physical or "social" distancing. The Sate Truck has visited my neighborhood twice in the last couple of weeks. Each time I've found the food wonderful. I think they normally hang out in Arlington. The Sumatra plate's chicken sate with peanut sauce is tender and flavorful. The beef curry was also exceptional. Fortunately even throughout winter a few brave food trucks make the rounds in DC. Maybe there are still more at other locations year round in the city but near my office it drops from about two dozen in the summer to about half a dozen. Everyone should be thankful that this one is still out there. Today I tried the Java Combo and added an extra chicken skewer for a dollar. I've picked up lunch here a couple times before and have never been disappointed. Today was no exception. In fact this is one of the best trucks (and that's saying a lot from someone who generally sticks to pizza and BBQ trucks). As I walked by this truck, it resembled very similarly to Sambal food truck. Now that I've looked them both up, they have the exact same menu and pictures. Not sure if it's the same business but the laksa soup looked different. It looks much less spicy here but it still tasted amazing. You can taste the basil and the lemongrass and also have that crunch from the sprouts. The corn fritters were definitely pre-made. They were cold and dried so I dunked them into my laksa soup and took them out and I highly recommend doing that because it warmed and moistened it up. Make sure it doesn't stay in the soup though. Yummy Indonesian food! The rendang is to die for! I know this because I'm from Indonesia and I'm constantly missing my country's food. This food truck is legit! Actually, one of the reasons I'm visiting DC is to find this food truck and have their rendang. I didn't try the other menu because I don't eat chicken and the rest are chicken-menu, I did try the vegetarian noodles, good mix of peanut sauce with the tofu and all, but the noodles were not that interesting. I've still never been to Indonesia but if you've ever been to the Netherlands Indonesian is everywhere and it's bomb (so much better than Dutch food ... except for maybe stroopwaffels.) It won't be better than getting the whole shebang in Amsterdam while you're inebriated but for American sate, it's spot on. For ten dollars; I got 5 sate skewers and a generous, perfectly seasoned portion of satay sauce. It is accompanied by two corn fritters and a side salad. There was absolutely nothing to complain about - I usually have a grudge against dc food trucks (they're so underwhelming and overpriced compared to Portland and Austin) and this is one of the few food trucks I actually wouldn't mind returning to again in the district. This truck is pretty tasty and is better than most of the ones that come to Georgetown. Seriously, I'm tired of kabob and Lebanese trucks. If you like spicy food, get the rendang beef. It just crosses that line where I have to stop and take a drink and wipe off some swear. Their skewers have a sweet peanut flavor, not my favorite, but still tasty. The corn fitters are delightful though as they provide a nice texture; It's like if cornbread and popcorn had a baby. Three and a half stars. Fair portioning for the cost. I was disappointed to see that the veggie of the day was just fresh salad greens lightly dressed with balsamic vinaigrette, but fortunately that was the least impressive component. Rice was perfectly steamed and lightly sticky. Corn fritters were crisped and conservative on filler ingredients. Meats were okay-- chicken only a little dry inside and coated by a tasty peanut sauce, and liberal curry saucing on the rendang to be sopped up with rice. Went to D.C. to visit an embassy so I decided to get lunch around Union Station. Walked down the food truck line and spotted Sate truck. I've been wanting to try more Indonesian food so this was my chance. I couldn't decide between the beef rendang (indo beef curry) or the satay chicken skewers but I then realized they had a combo with both! It is called the "SUMATRA PLATTER" and I'll probably order it every time. The beef rendang has a no filter, beefy peanut curry flavor with a spicy kick. That said, I think this delightful taste of Indonesia has quickly risen at the top of my list when it comes to food trucks and it is easy to tell you why. This is a perfectly filling (not over-the-top) lunch that satisfies any exotic craving you might have - mixing salty, bitter, sweet, spicy, and grilled into a pleasant harmony. And for an approachable $10 You get five skewers of perfectly grilled dark meat chicken with plenty of peanut sauce atop a bed of vivacious and fluffy white rice with some extra red pepper sauce if you like a little heat. It is accompanied by a leafy green salad with a light vinaigrette - a tangy contrast to the peanut sauce and chicken with some crispy fried semi-sweet corn fritters. Full of passion and love. The vegetarian option is also a palatable portion of griled and then sautéed saitan with vegetables, rice, and a peppery hot sauce. The next time, I would really like to try the Beef Rendang. 4.5 stars Quite possibly my new favorite food truck. This is an example of a small mom-n-pop that only has three items on their menu (sate, curries, mie ayam) but does them all really well. Menu items are $9-11. First time, I got the Sate combo. The chicken sate with peanut sauce was easily the best one I've had in DC. The beef curry was tasty and filling and actually spicy. I also really liked the curry on the rice, and the curry to rice ratio was perfect. The veggies were flavorful, although I think stewed for a wee bit too long. Second time, I tried branching out to the Mie Ayam (Egg noodles, Chicken, mushroom, Bok choy, wontons), and I loved it. Definitely different than what you can normally get at a food truck, and a good balance of flavors. The service has been friendly, fairly quick, and the price to portion ratio is pretty good at this truck (I won't quite be getting that food coma feeling, but I also won't be hungry by 3). Definitely 1 of the better food trucks in DC. There's usually a line during lunch time fyi. I usually get Sate Combo 1 ($11) - Rendang (spicy beef curry), 3 Sate (grilled chicken on skewer), 2 Bakwan (corn fritters), Veggie & Rice. The sate's decently good. The rendang isn't bad, I've had better though. The bakwan's kinda off, that's not how bakwan's really supposed to taste like. However, it's a pretty good for food truck overall. For the price, the portion's quite reasonable compared to other food trucks. read more

Yum Yum! I haven't ventured near the Farrgaut park trucks in a while during the lunch rush but today i decided to go back to try out something new. I was pretty disappointed by the same boring truck I knew were not offering anything great until I came upon the longest line infront of a truck (that's a sign, you see a long line, the food's bound to be good most of the time). After going back and forth and not seeing anything worth trying, i joined the line. Almost all the entrees have the same base (rice, vegetable) and then you can choose between chicken satay, curry or do a combo. I ordered the chicken sate platter which comes with jasmine rice topped with chicken sate slathered in peanut sauce and a side salad (gotta have some greens people!) and two corn fritters. I say all this food for $10 is bang for your buck especially in DC. The chicken sate skewers were so good and generously proportioned that I did not miss having a curry component. The green salad was a great companion to my otherwise carb/protein heavy meal and the corn fritters served as a perfect appetizer. Yum! Would def be back to try some more specials. read more

I had combo #1. The beef curry is legitimately spicy. It's got heat, but also some good flavors. The peanut sauce on the chicken satay was also very flavorful and the chicken was moist. The coconut milk rice wasn't bad. The one downer was the veggies: I wasn't a fan. A little too bitter for my taste I think. It conjured up bad memories of veggie curries I had in Bangladesh... Also, the line moved a bit slow. There were 5-10 people in front of me and it took me a little over 15 minutes to be served. Not too bad I suppose, but not super quick either. It's kinda tricky to find this truck. They move from one place to another every day. I checked their twitter and facebook to get the updated location. But they only inform the street name, not the exact address. The gps took me to different place, and I was so stressedout to find them on the 19 st nw and H st. They were not there. So I called them (240)277-9563, and they let me know the location. It was by the 1920 L Street Northwest on that day. Finally found them. The chicken sate (satay) was the best one. The chicken was tender, and the peanut sauce was yummy. We also tried beef rendang, but it's too spicy for us :D. One plate comes with jasmine rice, salad/veggie stir-fry, and corn fritters (the corn fritters were not that great). The range of the price is between $9-$12 per meal. read more

The chicken satay was okay, I wish the chicken were warmer, but it was cool by the time I got it. I got to the truck early so I guess they gave me the premade ones and not fresh off the grill top. The corn fritters were also tasty and still pretty crunchy despite being made in advanced. I liked the cooked veggies a lot (kale and carrots?) which is a nice departure from the normal side salad that other places have (thrown together lettuce and tomato with some random dressing). The good: The chicken was cooked well, tender, and flavorful The sate sauce was delicious, very peanutty The corn fritters had excellent flavor and crunch The bad: The rice was under-cooked. You would think being an Indonesian food truck this would have been the one thing they would nail. The chicken was cold (including the sauce) The corn fritter (fried) was cold The rice was cold It took them about 5-10 minutes to put my platter together, I would have expected things to have been freshly cooked or warmed up at least. It was an unpleasant surprise, to say the least, to find that all of my food was cold (room temperature or less) . I expected the rice to still be warm cause if they use a big pot or rice cooker it has to be, especially when I arrived close to when they opened, but nope. Everything was cold. They offer one vegetarian option, a tofu, tempeh, bok choy, and mushroom stir fry over egg noodles (so, not vegan). It thoroughly fills the container, and the stir fry sauce is good enough that I didn't feel the need to add hot sauce or anything to cover for it. I've not had a lot of joy with tempeh on my own, but in this dish it works. The accompanying corn fritters were less impressive; whatever breading they were cooked in didn't taste like much.
