There's basically few Asian restaurants outside of St.George or Cedar City in beautiful but spartan Southern Utah so this was it. It satisfied. The staff was friendly, thank you. The worst Chinese food I ever had. Mongolian Beef and Pepper steak looked the same and tasted the same. Full of veggies with three pieces of beef in it. Chicken curry looked the same with just different color. I felt like I ordered vegetarian food with all the vegetable included with it. I don't know how they are still in business. We both had the Szechuan, me beef, my wife chicken, mine was okay but hers was awful. Must be leftover chicken or the oil they used. The frozen, reheated spring rolls were terrible. If you're visiting from out of town like we were, you may be a little shook at how they prepare some dishes, but overall the server was really sweet, and the service was great and fast. We ordered the dinner combo for two and got the egg drop soup, sweet and sour soup, egg roll, potstickers, and kung pao chicken and vegetable lo mein. The funniest and most interesting part of the meal was the egg drop soup having like vegetable medley in it, which I'm assuming it for the locale palate who prefers things with more texture. This is stated on the menu, but I still surprised by it, is that the lo mein is made with spaghetti noodles. You have to work with what you got so I respect it. The flavors were all there and made great breakfast the next morning. And if you're with someone really picky they do offer American food and pasta as well. Really not a bad place overall, and after we struck out with both Mexican restaurants being closed early it was much welcome to our hungry stomachs. read more

My wife and I love going on roadtrips. And we always look for Asian food (Chinese & Vietnamese, mostly) along the way. We came across this restaurant in Richfield, Utah on the way to Vegas. I could not even describe my DISAPPOINTMENT on the food I've tasted from this restaurant, which is calling itself a "Chinese Restaurant"! The 'Hot and Sour' is neither Sour nor (Spicy) hot! Its just a plain dark soup, full of starch and has a bland flavor! The noodles are too soggy and breaking all over on the Lomein dish! And the other 'peppered beef and shrimp' ingredients are wrapped in thick layers of batter! Offering NO redeeming flavor to compliment the entire dish! We stopped by the South China Restaurant for lunch after getting glass work done and doing some shopping in Richfield Utah. We chose it because it was on our route so we just got lucky. There is a small parking lot in front and a larger one on the side where we parked. The place is large, clean and bright. We were greeted and showed to a table. The menu is large and they have a great lunch menu. My husband decided on the shrimp with lobster sauce and I chose the chicken chow mein with the hard noodles on the side. Lunch specials come with soup (me-Hot & Sour, Hubs-egg drop), an egg roll and fried rice. The soup had crunchy wonton strips on the top. I've never seen this before but it was delicious. The crunch added something to the soup. The entrees came with the egg roll which was small and had a veggie filling that mushed. It was not my fav. The fried rice was ok but I would get steamed rice the next time for the chow mein. The chow mein was really tasty. I would order it again. The shrimp with lobster sauce wasn't very saucy. It wasn't the best my husband ever had and he wouldn't order it again. We really enjoyed the food at South China Restaurant. I wished we had one that good in our town. I definitely recommend the soup and chow mein and, I bet, other selections would be delicious, too. read more

I wold not go there even if they paid me to go there. We, as a group of 3, ordered 3 different dishes and all 3 were very disappointed. The chicken teriyaki felt like it was a week old leftover that was warmed up and served to us, the seafood skillet had a weird sauce looted all over the veggies with a few shrimps and imitation crab meat, chefs special salad was a store bought salad mix with a few pieces of chicken, eggs, bacon (so basically the Cobb salad). It was a very bad experience and if you are looking for something to it while passing this town, please try something different and skip this place, do not repeat our mistakes read more

What kind of Chinese food could we possibly expect in the middle of nowhere Utah? Well, I can't speak to it's authenticity, but food that's hot, fresh, decently flavorful, and abundant should be appreciated by all. The "Mongolian Shrimp" is the standout from what we ordered. There's a crazy amount of veggies with plump juicy shrimp. The "Veggie Chow Mein" with crispy noodles wasn't what I expect. It was more like a soup. Not bad, just a tad bland. We got an appetizer sampler, and I gotta say, those "Spring Rolls" are great. The fried shrimp, cream cheese wontons we could do without, but I'd feel sorry for you if you skipped out on these. I was very pleased with the quantity of food we got for what we paid. One entree is easily enough for two dinners. If you like REAL Chinese food ...run from this place, just awful...the best thing on the menu were the ice tea and lemonade. Ive never had chinese food like this ever...over cooked rice? Using the wrong chinese rice you do not use japonica sticky over cooked mush...the schwan shrimp was smothered in a dark mystery sauce with zucchini, no other vegetables? Not on shredded of sesame oil but a sweetened sour mix.. I cant even discribe the flavor profile, but no it was mot good.. The shrimps wer tender though...we also had the chicken and broccoli, chicken was cooked by velvety, tenderized, it was covered by extremely under cooked broccoli, with no real seasoning, or standard chicken sauce, it was a huge platter of broccoli...the 3 servers were friendly and accommodating but everone had a dirty apron, and looked as they had cooked our meal...I really hated to post this but hopefully someone in management should Redesign your recipes, hire a chinese cook a real one ahd keep your front of the house personnel looking their best... read more

Hard plastic UFO IN SOUP! After a long hiatus, my friend and I ate there yesterday. Got a surprise with the very first spoonful of hot/sour soup: spat out a hard object that I initially figured was maybe a large, unground peppercorn. Upon closer inspection, it was some sort of hard plastic -- a black tip off something in the kitchen, I suppose. It had a definite "plink" when dropped onto the saucer. When I demonstrated this to our waitress, she didn't seem at all horrified. I gave it to her to show to the manager. NOTHING. I asked her 10 minutes later, yes the manager saw it. Was there a discount? Maybe a free order of wontons? NO, NOTHING. An apology? NOPE. She brought my tab with no comment. I said, "Did I get a discount?" NOPE. Will I be eating there again? It's probably the best Chinese food within an hour distance! (Granted, it might be the only Chinese food so that doesn't say much ). Overall, South China has pretty good food and offers not only Chinese but an American menu as well for those that want a cheeseburger or something. After a visit today, I do have to say that I was very pleased with the soup and that they did not skimp on the wonton strips. The service was very quick and food came out hot and fresh. I have had other visits where service was very slow and terrible. So hopeful you catch them on the good day! Food won't blow you away but I left satisfied. read more

The restaurant was clean and was decorated so adorably for the holiday. The service was great. I didn't wait at all to be seated, everyone was so kind with the nicest smiles. It's not the first time I've been here, but if it was, I would not be so inclined to come back. The food was really good, but the waitress was slow and unhelpful. She brought out a lunch menu with severe limitations, and never bothered to give us a dinner menu until we asked for it REPEATEDLY!!! The food was a solid four stars, but the service was a 1. My water was never refilled - nor did she even bother to bring a pitcher so that I'm may fill my own drink. Had to repeatedly ask for napkins which came near the end of our meal. We visited this place on a Tuesday while travelling through UT based on positive reviews. Man were we disappointed! If you are from a place that has an Asian-American community that knows how to properly prepare dishes Asian food in restaurants, DO NOT go to the South China Restaurant. They serve what is definitely a white person's version of what they think Chinese food is. I should have known better when I saw they offer both Chinese and American cuisine from the same kitchen. Food: I ordered the dinner combo with shrimp & lobster sauce, a usual favorite. It was nearly inedible. In addition to the shrimp, there was some sort of mystery meat I can only guess was supposed to be chicken; it had neither the flavor nor texture of chicken. Vegetables in the dish were clearly a frozen mix of peas and carrots; there was so much of it all I could taste was the peas. Egg drop soup was too thick, bordering on gelatinous (pull back on the thickeners people!). I ended up throwing 80% of the food away it was so bad. The one potsticker I received was the only redeeming thing about the meal. My child ordered the wonton soup which they enjoyed; however, there was a TON of vegetables in it, none of which were listed on the menu, and most of which are not things she cares for, so more food in the trash. When passing through Richmond on our way home, we made a point to bring food in from another town because our experience was so bad we were afraid to eat at any of Richmond's other restaurants. Service & Ambience: We ordered the food to go so I cannot speak to the quality of the wait staff's service nor the restaurant's ambiance. What I could see of the dining area looked fine, but definitely nothing special. The hosts however, were friendly. One of them, however, overshared information about themselves, including what a rough day they were having and how tired they were. This is not good customer service. Additionally, our food was brought out and set on the table at the to-go station, where it sat for a good amount of time while the oversharing host did other things to busy themselves and ignored the fact that the order was there. I thought maybe something was missing from the order and that's why we hadn't been given our food. I finally had to ask if it belonged to us, which it did. By the time we were able to get back to our hotel to eat it, my food was tepid, which definitely did not help all of the other things wrong with it. My child's soup had a lid that was partially melted into the soup and pieces of plastic broke off and fell in while we tried to get the lid off without spilling everywhere. If I could give this restaurant zero stars I would. Do not eat here. read more

Went here on a Saturday night about 5 pm, the place is very large inside and looks very clean. I was greeted as soon as we walked in and seated, they took the drink order and was back in a few minutes and took our dinner order. The prices are very reasonable and was cheaper then we have in San Diego. We ordered the dinner for two which had many choices and was $13.99 each. When the food came it would have fed 4 people. The food was delicious and hot and they did not skip on the meat. I checked the other orders as they came by and they all looked delicious. I recommend this place and the next time I come through Richfield I will eat here. read more

Today we chose to give the South China Restaurant some business. They weren't very busy and still it took the server a long time to come to get our order. This has been typical during our last few visits, and on one previous occasion we even got up and left since no one would take our order. Today the food was disappointing. The rice and pot-stickers were cold. It seems the food is getting worse. And when the bill came to pay, the server said he would be our cashier. He kept pushing that he had to be our cashier even after the server was told we would pay the bill at the cashier desk. The server claimed they didn't do that any longer and said the payment had to go through him. This made us feel really uneasy as we simply didn't trust this server at this point to have our credit card alone. When walking up to pay the bill the server followed us to the cashier desk but the server made the point to avoid helping us pay the bill. After a wait, the server came to take our payment. He was no longer polite and was blunt with us. I had even left him a tip that I now wish I hadn't due to his poor hospitality. This may just be the last straw for the South China Restaurant for us and we'll be happily to support other restaurants in the area. read more

Food is very good, service is good. But when we went they had a band that was just awful. You couldn't hear your partner talk sitting next to you. And it was an ear piercing screech. The manager was not anywhere near the place he had gone home . He probably couldn't stand the music either so he left.
