I needed to have my prescription data ASAP as my glasses broke. It was physically impossible for me to go to the optometry in person. I called to have my prescription emailed to me. A representative that sounded like a young man answered the phone. He lied to me about HIPAA rules and denied emailing me my data. He successfully bent me out of shape, and then, he hung up on me instead of helping me. I went to the gov site to check if the doctor's office really is forced to deny customers access to their data via email. In fact, the eye care provider is not at all prevented from transferring the customer's data as requested. Any electronic means is fine to use for this purpose. Customers have a right to their prescriptions automatically and unconditionally. The young man on the phone, in fact, instead of going by HIPAA rules as he insisted, went just the opposite, which in itself is a serious problem. But even more painful is that he was just a liar that decided to cause hardship and anxiety. All of that could have been avoided with a tiny consideration of another person's plight. (And the rules!) But no! Instead, why not cause distress to an elderly when he could? Pathetic individual and beyond appalling behavior. I do not recommend this optometry to anyone. read more

Why do you want to buy iZon glasses from Dr Quon?? It's because it has ELECTROLYTES!! If you want to know why it makes these glasses (lenses) better, it's cuz it's got electrolytes.... ok, it doesn't, but it should to justify the retarded pricing and slow service (1 month to get them vs. the quoted 2-1/2 weeks). "In fact, current iZon wearers describe their vision as High-Definition vision". That's an excerpt right out of the iZon 4-fold which I think is a retarded statement because they're not saying it directly that it's "high definition", but they constantly imply "HIGH DEFINITION" indirectly by saying that's how people describe it (nice use of buzz words, kind of like "radio" back in the 1900's with products like the "radio flyer"). Yea, well I heard somebody tell me that my review on Dr Quon is the most credible and most factual review ever! I'm not saying this, that's just what I was told by people commenting on my review. Why pay several hundred dollars more for these lenses and wait almost a month to get them??!? ! NO F'N reason that I can tell. I don't know if there's supposed to be a noticeable difference or if it's a negligible difference, but I can't tell and it's left me feeling like a tool for getting bamboozled. Add standard lenses vs iZon to the blades vs. cavity back, steel shafts vs graphite, pillow top vs. standard, or bushmen vs. bald eagle to the debate. I just feel like I payed extra for a product that didn't deliver a substantial value.... btw, I prefer the bushmen look. Good luck trying to find information on iZon because there's not much out there. I did find a bunch of optometrists debating the product, but they never really arrived at a conclusion. It was also dated a couple years ago, so I just left it at the conclusion that Dr Quon needed a product that'll differentiate him from the competition, and a great way to charge more than Lenscrafters. This puts him out of the realm/comparison for 1 hour lenses because he has lenses with electrolytes. About the people (4 stars): Dr Quon was definitely a very cool friendly guy, and Karen and Sheila both are somewhat genuinely cool too. Karen has over 30+ years of experience... not bad for a 26 y.o. chick. Ok, the math is off, but overall the service was fairly attentive and you don't get flipped from one person to another - this is the gripe that the guy had that I saw at Lenscrafters. He bitched that he just explained to one person the issues he had, and than he was on to another person who he had to explain it to all over again. Surprisingly the guy walked out to a black Lamborghini Gallardo - Lambroghini drivers don't go to South Coast mall for their glasses, they go to Lenscrafters in Irvine! Why did I go to Dr Quon? It's because I googled "Kazuo Kawasaki" frames because I was initially just looking to get replacement lenses. Instead, I walked away with iZon lenses (I was not offered any cheaper alternative), a $160-$180 eye exam because I paid an extra $50+ for some sort of eye exam that was supposed to tell me whether or not I eat Kobe or get enough ruffage in my diet. The conclusion of this test was skeptical, and to add additional injury, I was charged an additional $25+ for eye drops because my eye's are supposedly dry... they're dry from being all cried out after paying for eye drops that were thrown into my bill. I'm just hoping that these eye drops are good cuz.... yea, you know, it's probably got some sort of electrolytes. read more

This doctor is a joke. How on Earth can he charge $95 for a contact lens exam and then another $85 charge (can be more depending on your prescription) for fitting them? I don't even know what he charges for your glasses exam, but that should be included altogether for that price. Even if it was together, charging that much is absurd and should be around $60-80 for both. My work provides an attractive vision plan, one of the best, bomb ass, big tooty, busty insurance that everyone wished they had, and I pay a hefty premium for it and this fag whore still managed to pull a quick one and charge me $95 out of pocket and send a $140 invoice to my insurance provider for just an eye glass exam that somehow led to a contact lens exam too. Like the other reviewer said, Dr. Quon is like a used car sales man. Totally true. He tried to sell me on everything. HD Vision glasses? Huh? How about my fist in your face? Now that's HD. Then tells me how horrid my eyes were and that I needed to get this and that. Shut up already! They also charge $49 for some other exam that's supposed to catch glaucoma and whatever else disease 7 or so years before it occurs. I thought doctors were supposed to look after your well being, but instead he's trying to make a quick come up every chance he gets. Wtf?! Is it because he has a fancy office in South Coast Metro and was nominated on Best of LA's top optometrist and was on Fox 11 News? Does he need money to buy his bougie wife a face lift and his stuck-up kid a new BMW for Christmas? Whatever, I'm very bitter at the moment. I only came here because it was near my work and I thought they would save me money, and they also said they can get me whatever glasses I wanted if I brought them a printout, but then I was given a thumbs down on the pair I wanted. Crap, I should've stuck with my old optometrist. I didn't even get a box of contacts or my glasses and am afraid to order from them because who knows what other hidden charges they'll tack on. Let me preface this review by saying I was a patient of Dr. Quon for almost 20 years and I searched for an alternative in 2010 and couldn't be happier. Dr. Quon may seem personable and someone who actually cares about the quality of service that is delivered by himself and his office staff but from my experiences that is extremely far from the truth. His rates are ridiculous as many of the other reviewers notated. Also there are options with various vision insurance coverages that do allow for contacts as an example to be covered in cost completely if you meet certain criteria. Dr. Quon obviously never brought that to my attention and I only found that out after leaving. He certainly isn't looking into your best interests when he charges you when he has other more cost saving options when applicable. The funny thing is those rates don't give you any form of tangible or intangible premiums. Service is always extremely slow and not always professional. As an example, when they called to let me know that my contacts were ready, I came to get them and not until I opened them did I realize that one of them were missing. This happened twice sequentially because they did not check to see if the contacts were even there. It affected me since I travel often for business and scheduling an appointment to come in to be stuck in a long wait and then find out later your contacts aren't even there because no one bothered to actually check is unacceptable. The fact that it happened again on the same set that was missing right after is just shameful. I can see how people think Dr. Quon is a down to earth doctor who's looking out for your interests, but again the experiences that I accumulated over the years finally made me realize what a poor business and self serving environment his office is. Change was extremely difficult, I wouldn't have stayed so long with him otherwise since I kept forgiving or tolerating the poor service and high rates. But now that I've left and found an excellent alternative, I felt compelled to write a review so others know there are excellent alternatives that have your interests in mind, won't nickel and dime you, or try to sell you the latest technology for his benefit. It's clear that Dr. Quon fits the mold of a salesman who in the end cares about his bottom line more than his patients. read more

I will never return here! Over the years I have had small complaints from slow,poor service to high fees and always added extras. Last straw was when my daughter went in Saturday for new type of contacts, on Wednesday she had some serious comfort issues like stinging, redness and watery eyes. The receptionist decided to use her years of reception experience to diagnose my daughters condition as a medical condition, refusing to let her see the doctor unless she paid $89. Needless to say when the offending contacts were removed the irritation cleared up on its own without any medical attention. After 7 years of just so so service, I am moving on read more

The office is in a convenient location at Metro Pointe with ample parking. The staff is polite and friendly. Though, I will not be returning due to the offices failure to recognize my appointment time on multiple occasions. The first time I visited the office, I was informed I needed to make an appointment to be seen and that they were not able to give me an eye exam--despite the office being empty and it was still an hour until closing. For my following visits, I made appointments to be seen by the optometrist only to wait an extra 15 to 30 minutes because the previous appointment ran over or they accepted a walk-in just before my appointment. read more

Dr. Quon is very knowledgable, personable, and likes to be cutting edge. But be prepared to say "No" very frequently when you come here. I came in for a routine eye exam and to get a pair of glasses. My insurance covers the exam and the majority of the glasses, so I wasn't expecting to pay a lot out of pocket. The exam was pleasant, but after it was over, there are a bunch of other tests they want to perform. i.e. This huge machine where you stick your face in and it takes a picture of the back of your eye.. I ask how much it is and if it's covered by insurance. The price was high and not covered by insurance so I said no. Then they proceed to tell you how important the test is and if you don't do it there could be severe consequences.. This is when I started to feel uncomfortable. I proceeded to say that if my insurance doesn't cover it, then I didn't want to do it. Another round of trying to convince me and I just said no. I don't like it when sales people use scare tactics to try to make me buy something... Anyway, after the lens exam, I expressed that I just wanted a pair of glasses. The doctor suggested that I buy two pairs... Eh? I've never had glasses before and I wasn't sure I wanted to get two pairs right off the bat. Then he proceeds to try to sell me HD lenses, transitional, non-scratch coating, anti-glare, etc etc. I felt even more uncomfortable because I wasn't sure if all these features were normal. After browsing their frame selection, I was even more uncomfortable that I couldn't find any frames under $200. They gave me a quote for my two pairs of glasses and a bunch of add ons for the lenses and I thought it was a lot and couldn't afford it right now. They said think about it and come back, so I left wondering if this was a normal process for obtaining glasses.. My wife, who has had glasses all of her life said just use the prescription and go to Costco if you want affordable glasses. I told her I didn't get a prescription --- apparently something the optometrist is supposed to give you. So I called South Coast Optometry and requested my prescription. They put me on hold for a few minutes and said, ok, I would have to pick it up from the office. It seemed like they didn't want me to pick it up so I wouldn't go to another place to get my glasses... Needless to say, I'm still searching for a good optometrist where I don't feel like I have to posture like I'm at a car dealership! read more

I work in an office and constantly look at a computer screen all day. I started having trouble with my vision; eyes getting tired and focusing on a specific spot. Dr. Quan was very nice. When he finished my exam he did an great job of explaining to me what was going on with my eyes (diagrams and all :p). They had a wide range of frames. And I have to say 'thank you' to the Siobhaen who helped me pick out my frames (no matter how many times I switched back and forth between them :p). read more

Dr. Quan is one of the best optometrists I have ever been to. The eye exam was comprehensive. He spent nearly 45 minutes explaining everything to me and establishing a plan. His team followed up with me when my glasses and contacts were ready. They even followed up a couple of weeks later to see how my prescription was working out for me. I'm impressed! read more

Okay, this place is pricy! If you have good vision insurance it is THE place to go! The super whamodyne glasses I received last year are by far THE BEST glasses I've ever had. They are also the MOST EXPENSIVE glasses I've ever owned, even with fairly good vision insurance! They were SO GOOD my wife and I went again this year. Their prices did not drop, but that's okay because of their product. When the doctor said my wife and I needed follow ups for dry eye examination, I didn't blink (pun intended). So we both came back and the good doctor completed our follow ups. Then we were both with with $89 fees because they did not take our medical insurance! We were not planning on spending $188 a week before Christmas on these appointments! If we would have known they would not take TRICARE or Bluecross, we would have scheduled an exam with a doctor covered by our plan! The fact that they did not even ask about insurance until after the exam was completed irks my the most! Please don't get my wrong, the doctors care was great! The glasses spectacular (and pricy)! But the follow up made us FEEL TRAPPED! There should have been some upfront communication regarding insurance! With that, it's two stars! read more

This office just seems like they're trying to sell and make money. They wanted me to use daily disposable contacts because the doctor thought my eyes wouldn't handle monthly's. I pushed back and got monthly's and my eyes are fine with them. I also don't think my prescription is right. I mentioned it a few times to them but the doctor kept insisting it was so I jus gave up arguing cause he's the expert and I'm not. The reason why I think my prescription is wrong is because the way he tested me was suspect. He would show me two different sets if letters and ask me which was clearer and I honestly couldn't distinguish which one was clearer but he would make me pick one. Again I'm not an expert but it doesn't seem like thats an effective way to determine my prescription. Its almost as if I was forced into my prescription working for me. Disclosure: I've worked in the ophthalmic/optometric industry for the last 1.5 years, so I know a little bit about what I'm talking about, but I'm by no means a medically trained health professional. I am not in sales, and do not sell any products to Dr. Quon or his associates. Summary: A visit with Dr. Quon will take longer than your average optometric visit, but his extensive diagnostic tests and information on how to improve eye health are worth the extra time and money that, if you care about your long-term vision and health, you will appreciate. He or his staff may push a little bit on premium upgrades (contacts and glasses lenses), but I believe he does this in an attempt to protect your sight from threats that are being discovered by the medical community every day. Review: I've been to many optometrists in my life, and usually just hop around to whomever is closer to my work so I can sneak away early to get my prescription re-upped. However, since I've started working with eye care professionals, I've started to pay more attention to my eyes as I've seen some pretty bad consequences for those who haven't. Needing to do a quick "drive-in" for more contacts and glasses, I chose South Coast Optometrists because they were a carrier of Oakley frames and close to my office. I could not be happier with this decision. Right off the bat I noticed how many different frames and lenses were spread around the modest-sized office. At the very least, I knew I'd have choices. What I wasn't expecting was the amount of diagnostic equipment being held in the pre-exam room. I was impressed by the breadth of tests used to test my eyes and get an accurate reading on my visual acuity. After these tests I sat in the exam room for just a little bit before Dr. Quon came in. Like most reviewers have said, he is a very personable person whose exams, while thorough, are still quite pleasurable. He proceeded to do an extensive exam of my sight, dry eye, and went over my eye scan with me. I was honestly amazed that he went over so much with me. In an industry where contact, glasses, equipment, and insurance providers are trying to squeeze every penny they can out of a doctor, the best way for them to make money is to churn-and-burn patients as fast as possible for volume. The fact that his exams would take so long point to the fact he cares more about treating his patients than making money. However, his practice is still a business, and I'm sure it's not cheap to rent space in the South Coast Plaza area. Also, all of the equipment is not cheap, neither is the staff, and you can bet your insurance is trying to pay him as little as possible. So yes there is an upcharge for the extra eye scan; and yes there is an upcharge for extra fittings, premium contact lenses, premium lenses in the glasses, and any other extra he might suggest. But at the end of the day, they are just SUGGESTIONS. You do not have to buy any of it, and all you need to do is be very clear you aren't interested in that. But before you complain, what if his tests show the beginning stages of macular degeneration, or show that you're developing some premature cataracts? So yes, you will be ushered towards premium upgrades, just like he'll suggest you get a pair of high quality sunglasses that offer the best UV protection, but it's only because all of these things can and do help prevent vision loss and eye damage. It's important to remember that new information is being uncovered every day, and not all of the products end up being worth the extra money (electrolyte lenses? LOL), but once you lose your vision that's it, so why not at least go to a doctor that reads the latest studies and is willing to try the latest things? I for one appreciate the time and effort Dr. Quon puts into his patients. And like anything else in life, you get what you pay for. So if you want to go to a 15 minute "drive-thru" OD at Wal-Mart, where you get the cheapest lenses with the cheapest frames...go ahead. But if you want a doctor who spends the time diagnosing and trying to treat your eyes, and want the options to protect your eyes, then this is the place for you. read more

So, I'm getting older and my eyes now need readers. So I came back here and the experience was great. I received a thorough eye exam from Dr. Poolsaad to get my prescription for my lenses. I was given options based on my insurance and I originally opted for readers that I had to take off and on. A few weeks later, I came in and requested Progressives (bi-focal without lines) so that I wouldn't have to keep taking them off and on, but could wear them all day as long as I used them correctly. My point in all of this is that I had another great experience at SouthCoast and I'm glad I returned to them for my glasses. Dr. Poolsaad is great as is all the staff there. read more

I've been a happy patient of Dr. Quon for about 10 years now. My mom has been a patient of his for even longer! First thing you notice about Dr. Quon after seeing him for so many years is that he doesn't age. Second thing you notice is what a true expert he is in the field of optometry -- always ready to enlighten you with the latest research findings and cutting edge products and technology. The staff has always very friendly and helpful, and there is a good selection of designer frames and sunglasses available. Although this place isn't the cheapest, I feel comforted to know that they can offer the latest lenses, contacts, and other eye corrective services. I don't see it as being "sold" anything. I absolutely loved this place. It is very warm and the staff is very friendly. I really cant praise them enough! I came in at the last minute because I had a red eye and it was sore when I blinked. They fit me in on a Saturday and I walked out with some real information about what was going on with my eyes.They answered every question I had. I had gone to another eye Dr. for years and he never once told me I had a certain issue with my eyes or how I could keep it from getting worse. I have been going to LensCrafters for years for my glasses. I thought I would give another place a chance. The first round of getting my glasses here didn't work so well; I use progressive lenses and the distance was blurry. I was also disappointed in the frames (which was my fault, I picked them out). Dr. Quon did the entire eye exam all over again and we found new frames. They did not charge me again. I was very relieved as, even with vision benefits, the glasses were several hundred dollars. One thing about this office I want to mention is that most of the frames you can try on are behind locked cabinets, so someone has to be with you while you're trying them on. They patiently do that, but just FYI. I would definitely recommend Dr. Quon. He changed what could have been a very disappointing experience with an attitude of wanting to get things right. These days few businesses seem to have this characteristic, and I appreciated it very much. read more

I've waited 6 months to send this review, because that is how long they have taken to process my claim for insurance. I knew it was going to be a disaster before I even had my appointment when they told me I had to pay upfront and then get a reimbursement check after they billed my insurance. I told them I talked to my insurance provider and that is not how they do it, but SC optometry acted like I was stupid and "explained" to me how it works. Let's put a timeline together: * I had the appointment on 2/3/17 * They did not bill my insurance until 5/1/17 (after I called 3 times to ask when they would be doing so) * I finally talked to my insurance again on 8/1/17 to see if they had sent them the check and they sent it on 5/3/17 and the doctor's office cashed it on 5/18/17!!!!!!!!!!!! * I called the doctor's office that same day (8/1/17 - mind you, 6 months after I had the appointment and 2.5 months after they cashed my check...) and they acted like they didn't even know they were supposed to send me this reimbursement... they were LITERALLY trying to get double paid by not sending me my reimbursement!! They told me they needed to have the accountant in the office in to issue the check; I told them they had the check for 3 months from my insurance and asked why it had not been done yet, and the person I was talking to said "oh I guess we didn't know if you wanted it mailed or what" ... you mean to tell me you waited 3 months to NOT find out what I wanted until I called YOU?! Also, in the beginning when they were acting as though I was stupid and "explained how insurance worked to me" they told me: I pay at time of service, they bill my insurance, my insurance pays them and then they mail me a reimbursement check. Ok, so you told me how it works and still did not do what you were supposed to... I'm sure I am not the only person they have done this to...wait 3 months to send into the insurance company to hope the patient forgets about it and they get double-paid. This was the most thorough eye exam I've ever received. Everything was explained very clearly, and the doctor gave me good advice about how to keep my eyes healthy. They have a nice selection of glasses and the staff were all friendly and helpful. I feel like some of the reviews on here are by people who don't understand that insurance doesn't cover everything, and that if you want nice glasses and lenses you have to pay for them. The staff explained all the costs and my insurance coverage to me clearly. There was great customer service in terms of a one-year warranty and the promise to fix the lenses if for any reason I felt like my new RX wasn't right for me. After my nightmare from Dr. Shack in Newport.. my expectations are pretty low for optometrists but I can tell this place was a lot better. I was only a little annoyed with all the tests they did before I saw the actual optometrist. I think we spent at least 45 mins just doing tests on machines that looked expensive. Look, I already wear glasses.. I know I need them.. I just need someone to put different little lenses in front of my eyes and tell me "1 or 2... 2 or 3..." I didn't see Dr. Quon.. I met with the other younger optometrist and he was very friendly and seemed to know his stuff. If I can get over the annoying tests or bypass them before I see the optometrist, I'll probably ask to see the same optometrist again. I thought the prices were fair but I also got cheaper frames this time and didn't bother with all the upgrades. I do like that they explain in detail all the discounts and the price differences I got with having insurance. It reassured me that I got a good deal and worth keeping the insurance. The receptionist is very nice, she made the appointment process very simple and greeted me when I came in and left. I also came back a few weeks later to readjust my frames and while I was there, they also fixed a pair of sunglasses for free. They were fast, friendly and efficient. :) If you're looking for a place that takes VSP insurance and you have the patience to go through all the tests on those expensive machines then I say go for it! read more

The highest tech office that gives exams on every level of diagnostics including how much plaque build up due to cholesterol is in the veins of your eyes, and how much macular degeneration, or potential cataract development has started. All of this is done without pupil dilation. The staff is charming, helpful, kind hearted and well trained. The glass frames sold are top notch. You will love Dr. Quon, he is truly a very nice man. I love my glasses, and you will too. One year complete coverage on lenses. And the building at the Metropoint mall in Costa Mesa is only half as dazzling as the office. Easy parking too. read more

I hadn't had my eyes checked in 10 years and had needed glasses for all of those 10 years. I finally got vision insurance at my job and well South Coast was part of the insurance. Dr. Quan was very helpful in the knowledge of my eyes and some of the disorders I had. The staff was very helpful and not pushy at all in the price of my choice of glasses. This was by far the most thorough eye-exam I have ever had, not mention the first time I saw true color consistently with the help of my Chromogen lenses. Dr. Quon and his staff go above and beyond to educate and inspire one to endeavor toward vision at the highest and clearest level. Great customer service as well. Dr. Quon's co-manager Sheila was incredibly warm, compassionate and extra helpful. I truly felt well-taken care of and special. If you are color deficient like I am and dream of seeing more color, I highly recommend you give the process a shot. I won't be going back. I feel stupid I went here in the first place without finding out EXACTLY how much I would be getting charged. I feel bad that I recommended my friend to come here. I feel dumb that after the high amount of money I paid for the exam that I actually bought my glasses here. I feel hoodwinked. I feel scammed. This is how a person feels after they realize they've been dealing with scammers. There will always be people who don't realize they're getting taken advantage of, & those are the people who have given good reviews of this place. Then there are the people who figure it out too late, but better late then never. Hard to believe why this place got so many good rates. Be careful when they do exams for you with additional cost and "it's up to you to pay for doctor to review". Of course the doctor reviewed my result without confirming with me. Did not realize it until I checked out. read more

Avoid this place! The Dr. will try to sell you everything. I got Lasik a couple years ago and he was insisting that I need to order glasses and contacts. I have 20/20 vision! He also told me that I had every possible thing wrong with me, Glaucoma, Sun Damage, etc. Rediculous. Don't go here unless you like the used car salesman tactics. read more
