Short Version: This Optometry is ......well,...abysmal. Don't go there. Ever. Poor Service, poor refraction, poor workmanship. Waste of money and time. Longer Version: Went there because it was conveniently located. They made me look through all kinds of fancy-shmancy gizmos to measure my eyes. At the end of all, I was wondering, why I still could not read the second line from the bottom of the eye chart (I usually was able to read the bottom most line with my glasses!!). My question as to why that was so was answered with a laugh saying I was just getting old and should possibly just deal with it, insisting the refraction was done properly. (Which I did, i.e. dealing with it, 2 months after, different optometrist, none of that fancy gizmo stuff, and everything was back to normal!! Not just better vision reading the chart, but also noticeable improvement in daily use.) The first time they delivered my glasses, which took an eternity, the pupillary distance was wrong on them. I got seasick from them. Also, there were workmanship issues. Returned them. Second delivery: PD correct, returned them for poor workmanship on the lenses (airgap between lens and frame) as well as scratchmarks on the frame. Not too fancy of a frame, bought at this very place. No excuse for extravagance! The third delivery: The apprentice who worked on the first two must have gone through a learning curve. Better, but still far from good (Stripped fasteners, scratches, still a small airgap between lens and frame). Was finally so fed up with it, and, with almost two months having past since my first visit, I decided that I'm just gonna take the glasses as a back up set and call it a day. I did not even feel like talking to them about refund of my prepay or anything. I was just plain fed up (I know, my fault.....), and decided to never give them any business again, even if they're the only optometry left on the planet. My entire experience was awesome! Dr. Poolsaad provided the most thorough eye exam I think I've ever had. He was kind, considerate,and knowledgeable, but most of all, he took time to explain his findings. It's great to finally find an OD that is patient oriented, and willing to go the extra mile to provide quality care. The SCO office staff was great as well. I've been going to Dr. Quon for the last 3 years and I have to say he is the most thorough optometrist I've ever been to. He really takes his time with his patients, you never feel like he is just "rushing" through to get to the next patient. Throughout his examination he does a fantastic job in explaining everything that he does. And because he is up on the latest developments in his profession you know that you are getting the best care with all up-to-date technology. My only regret is I wish I knew about him a lot earlier. His staff is second to none! They are well trained and his office manager Karen is a gem! They also have a great selection of frames and if you don't find the ones you are looking for they can get them for you. This was one of the best experiences I've had with any doctor ever! Dr. Poolsaad is young and passionate, super well-informed, patient, kind and thorough. He does not try to up-sell you. In fact, he talked me out of spending money that I didn't need to. He took the time to explain things to me and even gave me his extra time when he had it. I've been to the office on several occasions now, and the front desk staff are very kind and friendly. Bob, the gentleman who helped me with lenses and frames, was also very kind and helpful. Dr Q is too thorough. He gives a lot of fancy terms and definitions to try to get you to spend money. I did a painful test; then was told I couldn't get the results of the test unless I paid an additional $50. Then why have the pain of the test in the first place? $800 for an exam and glasses, where I didn't even buy a frame?? Pluse 2 hours to getthrough the appointment?! I can get through an HMO pap appt in less than 2 effing hours!! read more

I tried this place out randomly just because I needed to get new glasses and felt like going somewhere new. First off, Dr. Patel is awesome. He was so kind and attentive and really listened to my needs. My contact lense fitting experience was awesome. The ONLY thing that bothered me was the extra charges that I wasn't aware of incurring. I thought I would be only paying like 20 bucks copay and walked out paying close to 100 for all the different fittings. I just wish I knew that it would cost me extra before I paid for it...or else I wouldn't have. Then there is Brian, who is just as awesome! He patiently helped me try on what feels like a BILLION sunglasses. No one is ever this patient with me, it was great!! I even came back the next day to try on more and he was cheerful as ever to assist me. I had a really fun time hanging out there and would not hesitate to come back. I came in November 2011 for my initial exam. The doctor was very thorough but then when I went to look at frames I was being sold on every aspect of lenses and frames. I have very good insurance so I knew my price range and what was covered. I did elect to have a Prism put on my lenses which I paid $75 out of pocket for. I was not able to return till January 2012 and I told them at that visit the prescription was wrong and I couldn't wear the glasses. They kept the glasses and told me I would have to use my insurance to have another exam done. My insurance offers me a free redo within 6 months. Yet they wanted my insurance to pay them more money and have me do another exam. Then I speak with this man who says he is going to be handling everything from that point on. Slowly he started to turn into the rudest individual I have ever spoken to. He would yell at me that I had to use my insurance again even though my insurance offered a free redo within 6 months. I would ask to speak to an office manager and he would hang up on me. When I would call back he would put me on hold only to hang up on me. This is even more frustrating because at the same time last year I was very sick and was having numerous procedure as well as surgery. All the time they were saying I had to reuse my insurance. I finally had enough of being yelled and belittled by this man working in their office and being sick I stopped contacting them. I was finally able to have them mail me out my glasses and just received them today. I spoke with the office manager who insinuated that I was lying about my experiences with the man and that it was my own fault for not using my insurance again. She told me that all along I should have been contacting my insurance company not them. They had my glasses and I paid for over a year and then tell me its my fault that I should have been contacting my insurance. Luckily my insurance is trying to help me out but there isn't much to do since the office is so completely unwilling to help. I'm glad that the office got paid by my insurance. Yet still tries to be shady by having my use my insurance again to get paid AGAIN while I'm screwed out of $75. I do not recommend this place to anyone and I do give a huge warning that this place is very shady and will do anything to get paid more and more money. read more

I drove from AZ to get my son, who is colorblind, corrective lenses. To deal with the most unprofessional staff. The lady doing the enchroma fitting was rude and had it not of been for the fact that they were the closest option I had I would never go there. I paid a very high price for the lenses and they couldn't even ship to me for free... rediculous. The only nice thing is the enchroma gem lenses help my son see color. She needs to be trained on customer service and the receptionist is just as bad. They had me their waiting for 3.5 hours while they were chatting about their personal lives in front of customers. I saw Dr. Quon & Dr. Poolsaad for the post op after my lasik, and I cannot thank them enough for how trustworthy, considerate, and caring they are. My results are great and I know I will be in good hands whenever I see them. They are the best of the best. I was having trouble getting the drops into my eyes, and Dr. Quon even took the time to watch (and educate) me on how to better get them in. My sister in law recommended Dr. Poolsaad after i was disappointed with my previous optometrist. I had a lingering discomfort in my eye so I went to Dr. Poolsaad for a second opinion. He investigated the issue deeply and narrowed it down to one of two possibilities. He provided treatment options and was clearly passionate about finding the problem vs. throwing antibiotics at it like my previous dr. His staff was helpful in navigating my insurance coverage. Three family members each got an exam and a pair of glasses here. Almost $1500.00 and in less than a year we cant see SQUAT out of our glasses. Im not here to bash the business. Dr.Patel was very nice and knowledgeable, and thorough. There are a lot of tests that were conducted on ALL the latest high tech machines. Maybe I picked too small of a frame for progressive lenses, I don't know. But what I DO know is that a lot of $$ left our account and I myself personally was buying prescription readers less than a year later because I just can not see out of my progressives that I paid $400 for here. Dr. Poolsaad was very knowledgable, and the staff was very friendly! I was impressed with all of the latest technology they use to assess you during the exam without losing that touch of hospitality. The assistant that did my initial exam was especially memorable. She made me feel at ease and was a great example of professionalism. My only feedback is that in going through the costs for my glasses at the end, they assumed I wanted the most expensive option on a few things versus explaining that I had options. I had to stop them to ask if I HAD to have the most expensive option. Once I asked, they were incredibly knowledgeable in explaining the features, and I still purchased the more expensive feature because of its value. Maybe next time just lead with that. I came in to South Coast optometry after feeling the need to switch optometrists after having a bad experience. Despite being a little hesitant due to reviews, I went for it and made an appointment for a full check-up with Dr. Smith. Based on other reviews, I expected to come in here and be bombarded with sales pitches that I wouldn't want. When I walked in, I was greeted by a nice cool quiet office with a receptionist. I soon saw Dr. Smith and was overwhelmingly pleased with the service I received. I first saw that he washed his hands before seeing me. That's always a really good sign especially if gloves are not worn. Next we did some standard procedures, no trouble. What really set him apart was his personality. What I really liked about him is he would talk with me and keep the procedure professional and at the same time an enjoyable experience. Throughout the exam I was offered some services for an additional fee, but Dr. Smith told me all of the details and I felt perfectly comfortable to say no to those I felt were unnecessary. I did happen to agree to one of them, which was an alternative to dilating the eyes. As I mentioned before, I had an issue with my previous eye doctor where the dilation was really painful and it hurt my eyes. Dr. Smith was very calming and reassuring throughout. With my experience at South Coast Optometry, everything went smoothly and correctly. I would highly recommend this practice and especially to request for Dr. Smith. read more

Dr Quon is a very professional eye care provider. I have never had such a thorough exam. Because I am allergic to the traditional dilation medication, I have not had a complete exam in years. Dr Quon has another option (Optomap) for people like me, and thankfully, everything checked out! He was also patient with me when the bifocal contacts I tried didn't work out, and encouraged me to try mono vision lenses. And did not charge extra for all the extra time and visits. I see great now! I also got a super cute pair of Tori Burch glasses--they have a mind blowing selection. They accept VSP, so most of what I received was covered. After switching from getting my eyes checked at Costco to seeing Dr. Quon, my vision has improved tremendously. He has been extremely thorough and always double checks if my eyes have really changed or not. I have a severe astigmatism and it is ordinarily very difficult to fit me for contact lenses. Dr. Quon likes a challenge and has done an outstanding job fitting me for toric lenses. Love the doctors and the staff. Compelled to write a useful review for those of you who care to read. I know that when I read one, I want to get a sense of the reviewer, so here goes. - Never wore glasses until I was 40, now 53 - Have visited probably six optometrists over the years - I move frequently - I like one pair of glasses for everything and until this past visit always had those low profile rimless glasses - I spend a lot of time in front of a computer - I wear progressive lenses I've had at least two of the other doctors in the past screw up my prescription - so strong they made me dizzy so I was a bit concerned about seeing yet another doctor. South Coast IS GREAT - Thorough pretesting after which I explained my past history with the docs and glasses. - Dr. Poolsaad spend a great deal of time and recommended a coating to block some of the blue light due to the time I spend in front of the computer. Having worn these new glasses for two months I can tell you I've had so much less eye fatigue. - Since a chose a larger frame, the doctor recommended that they alter the 'standard" progressive lens to make it easier for me to work in front of the PC yet still see mid and far distance. Everything has worked wonderfully. Never seen so crisply, without dizziness, from near to far. OK, I spend longer at the office than anticipated, but that's because everyone was so attentive and thorough. Bottom line - I would recommend these folks to anyone needing great service, smart docs and staff, and an excellent selection of glasses. read more

I have been a client of Dr. Quon since 1980. I am very badly near sighted, and am hard to fit for contact lenses. Dr. Quon has always been very professional, patient and kind during the eye examinations, and ALWAYS takes his time during the eye exam, (unlike other eye doctors I have been to in the past, who try to zoom you in and out fast with glasses you cannot see out of) and makes sure that you walk out with glasses and contacts that you can see out of. I would not be coming back after 34 years if I was not happy with the service, and I highly recommend Dr. Quon to all my near and far sighted friends!!! read more

As a person who is colorblind, I can't thank the staff at south coast optometry enough for how helpful they were with getting me a pair of glasses that allow me to see and experience the world unlike I have ever been able to before. Never come here even if you are diagnosed with cataracts and they are the last ophthalmologists left on earth. The staff (except for 2 people) are completely clueless and will charge you up the wazoo for everything eye related. Except to pay 3-4x's as much for eyeglasses/sunglasses as Lenscrafters, I don't see anyone but Paris Hilton coming here for their eye care needs. I think these people get commission for trying to up sell you on everything from extra, unnecessary testing to extra coating on your lenses. If you don't know what Izon means, I suggest you read up on it NOW - it's a total waste of money... The only good thing this doctor's shop has going for it is the high tech equipment and if you have good health insurance, take them up on the free glaucoma testing -it's very, very comprehensive. Just be prepared to come back at least 5 times and have your eyeballs be poked and proded at. read more

I'll start with the good. Dr. Quon is outstanding! He has a wonderful demeanor, explains everything and is very patient. He really knows his stuff and I trust my eyes to him completely! One of the Assistant's Brian is also fantastic. Very patient and helpful. He helped me pick out my first pair of glasses and didn't try to upsell me at all. I appreciate both of these gentlemen. If everyone in this office were like them the rating would be at 3 stars higher. Now the just ok, patient beware section. When I picked up and wore my first pair of glasses my vision seemed very distorted and I was dizzy while wearing them. Everyone in the office acted like I was crazy. Then finally after bringing them back in for the second time finally Brian was there and I asked him about it. He said the glasses just needed some adjusting. He took them in the back for a minute and voila, his adjustments made them perfect! The others in the office said "Oh, you didn't tell us they needed adjusting". I told them that they knew I had never worn glasses before, how should I know this? Now for the bad. Sheila (who is very sweet) will upsell you like crazy. As another reviewer said, they will assume you want everything and the kitchen sink thrown into your glasses. I told them I just wanted glasses to wear at home and as an emergency backup. (I wear contacts daily and have for years). Sheila showed me the frames that she said my insurance covered (turns out they are the most expensive high designer brands they have). She wrote up the order for this coating, that coating and a special (most expensive) lens material. Also she had in the order for transition lenses and she tried to talk me into getting prescription sunglasses as well. I left that day without ordering, to think about the $900 "backup" glasses she wanted to sell me. I went back the next day and worked with Brian on my glasses order. He explained everything to me, presented me with many different options for the coatings, lenses, frames (turns out my insurance covers all the frames they have, not just the high end ones), etc. I was thrilled with the $300 glasses that Brian ordered for me. Also when I went in to pick up my contacts after they called to say they were in, the young lady at the front was unable to find them, she said they might have called me in error, that they were not there. She called me the next day to follow up on her call to me from the day before to pick up my lenses. I asked if they were really in, she said, oh, let me check. Yes, they are in. This is also the same person who previously when I arrived for my 1pm appointment finally unlocked the door to the office at 1:20pm for me and another patient with a 1pm appointment as well. She told me that they decided to take a long lunch. Overall I would recommend this place for a high quality eye exam and then take your prescription and run unless you are able to only work with Brian to place your order and handle everything else. read more
