South Coast Repertory is an intimate, mid-sized theater. We've enjoyed plays and a musical there. Since it's small, the view has always been good from any section we've sat in. This was my first time at the South Coast Repertory. It is a much smaller venue than the Segerstrom hall. They tend to have more plays than musicals here. I was lucky to score a deal for Million Dollar Quartet and apparently they have punch cards so if you buy 5 tickets, the 6th is free. I bought my tickets online and arrived half an hour before the show so there was no line to get my tickets. Parking is convenient, there are several lots nearby or you could park at the mall and walk over. Since the theater is small, every seat is a good seat. It was a little loud for my taste but I don't believe you would have that problem if you were to see a play. The staff was very friendly and I had no problems finding my seats. In addition to theater, they offer acting classes for children and adults which sounded interesting. read more

SCR current production of "God of Carnage" is witty, entertaining and depicts human nature to a T. The 4 actors carried their own characters with ease. Nothing is forced. One negative comment is with the hanging chandelier not fitting with the rest of the stage. read more

We just discovered South Coast Repertory, and we are now patrons forever! What a great theatre! We found it through an Instagram advertisement for "Little Shop of Horrors," which is one of my favourites, so we made a trek all the way to Costa Mesa from our humble abode in Lawndale on a Friday night. It was well worth it! The theatre is a medium-small size, and there really is not a bad seat in the house! Our seats from row J were fantastic, but I'm sure even sitting in the last row would give you an excellent view of the stage and actors! The seats themselves are standard. We loved this venue for its intimacy, decent prices, and lovely audience members. It was certainly a fun night going downtown, home to Skid Row! This company does something I have not experienced before, which is "Pay Your Age." Unfortunately, I'm too old for this discount, but my wife is still in her late 30s and makes the cut! This pricing worked well, as we saw a number of younger patrons in the audience, laughing, clapping, and dancing along! As an educator, you can also get a small discount on your ticket. There are a number of parking options around this area, as this theatre shares space with Segerstrom and is by a number of businesses and South Coast Plaza. We already have plans to return next season for a few shows. South Coast Repertory has become one of our favourite theatres! read more

A great venue for live performances. Watched Heart Sell, it was very touching and believable. It reminded me of how I felt when I first came to America and was expecting all the glamour living in there United States. The actors we're so in tune with their characters. We went to see Little Shop of Horrors and I was shocked at the quality of the show. The production was seamless and beautiful. The acting, sound, props and stage were amazing. I almost cried! Easy to find parking on the adjacent structures. You can buy wine, beer and other beverages. They'll put them in small cups with lids and you can bring them into the show. My mom and I got to see a show here recently (Little Shop of Horrors). It seems like there are multiple stages here? Our show was great! We really enjoyed it. We were in the front row and therefore had a wonderful view! I was also able to purchase tickets with a teacher discount, which I thought was really cool. Nice facilities and nice staff! They do not have a parking lot here, but there is a parking structure right next door. read more

My husband and I loved our experience watching A Christmas Carol at this stage. My piano student invited me to watch her perform as Tiny Tim in the play and I was extremely surprised at how good the actors and play were. just saw a play called "eat me" and i highly recommend you do not go!!! it is a non sensical play, it is convaluted, if you think about some of your sickest, most unhealthy and demented thoughts and then times it by 6 you arrive at some of the dialogue in this gem. at times it is beyond vulgar, crude and repulsive might better describe parts of the script. if they would have had an intermission i would have left then. acting is good but the script is not for me and i spoke with 4 individuals after the play concluded and they all agreed it was not something they would recommend. save your money and watch something good on netflix are amazon prime. read more

Very nice little theatre. I don't think there is a bad seat in the house. Much smaller venue than the Segrestrom. We saw Little Shop of Horrors. Fantastic performance! Top of the line professional actors and singers, choreography. We spent our 15 minute intermission strolling around the beautiful grounds outside. Just a short walk over the bridge to the South Coast Plaza with lots of dining options. I can't wait to go back and see A Christmas Carol. I have been to the Segrestrom many times, but this is my first time at the S C Repertory. Definitely coming back for more performances. read more

Although I had no idea what this play was about, or where South Coast Repertory was, I decided to put my name down for a pair of tickets during a silent auction, was the only person who bid on them so I won! and Wow, what a great decision to put my name down! This venue and production of Coleman '72 really set the bar high! Coleman '72 is about a Korean American family on a road trip across the US. It struck many chords with me being Asian American and understanding the delicate and complicated relationship between immigrant/refugee parents' heartache of sacrifice and struggle and their US born children's take on happiness and success. Their were also themes of guilt, forgiveness, and how nostalgia plays on our perception of truth and memory. I quote from the playwright, Charlie Oh, "nostalgia is dangerous." The actors' powerful performance left me in tears several times, partly in a cathartic manner as it conjured up my own memories and feelings of my father. Perhaps I was not the only one as I also heard other people blowing their noses in the bathroom just as I did. The venue was medium sized yet intimate. I like the small touches such as fun facts about Coleman products that were placed in the bathroom stalls. This place is a quick walk via the pedestrian bridge from South Coast Plaza. Highly recommend this play for high quality theater production and acting! read more

I introduced my wife to this before we were married as a date night. She was so excited about it that she said wanted to bring her patents the next year and I should bring mine. That was almost 20 years ago. Attending every year since even though we have lost family members. WORST CUSTOMER SERVICE EVER! This review has no reflection on the theater or actors but the box office customer service team. It deeply saddens me to write this but I am so disappointed with SCR as we go to shows monthly and have donated to the organization. This morning I got an email saying our show for A Christmas Carol got cancelled due to sickness and to call for a refund or exchange. I called and waited 47 minutes which I understood but when I got to a rep she said even though I spent $82 per ticket for 8 people = $656 only cheaper side seats, broken up were available for $68. I said no problem please just refund me the difference. She said it is not policy to refund even though the only tickets available were less expensive. I then asked can I get a full refund and buy the tickets myself online for the cheaper price and she said no they wouldn't be available even though I had them up on my computer screen. After a very long argument and being transferred to management they also said they couldn't do anything. I called back and talked to a different manager and he admitted she was wrong and I could get a full refund and purchase them myself online but at this point the exchange was finalized and there was nothing to be done and he hung up on me. In the end our night we chose show was cancelled, we went from front center seats to side middle seats and paid the same price and lost a refund of $112. read more

Nina Simone: Four Women- DON'T WASTE YOUR MONEY! I would have given 0 stars had the review allowed it. This was one of the worst plays I've ever seen and surprised it was part of the South Coast Repertory lineup. If you love Nina Simone's music, as I do, you'll be very disappointed that not one of her songs that we all know were included in the splay. Besides being a very angry play, it was also repetitive and boring. 80% of the people sitting around us were asleep after the first 15 minutes. It was a hard way to spend an hour and 40 minutes of my time. read more

I came to the South Coast Repertory to see Fireflies. It was an excellent performance. We purchased our tickets through Goldstar.com. The parking was adjacent to the venue and was easy to find. The parking was $12. However some people told us that they parked at South Coast Mall for free and just walked across the street. I'll do that next time because $12 is a little steep. The seats for the venue weren't that comfortable and they are really close to each other. However, there wasn't a bad seat in the house. The acoustics were great as welL The location is great for dinner and a play because there are plenty of restaurants in the area to choose from. All in all a great date night. read more

Excellent little venue, attached to the larger Arts Centre, in which every seat is a good one. Usher/docents at every door (including restroom hallway) to help and guide, are great. They could use better management at the ticket counter. With three persons--one for new tix, one for will call, and one for problems, it sounds like a good idea--until the Will Call line is 30 persons deep and no one is at either of the other lines, but they redirect you to the long line with a smile--and without help, while twiddling their thumbs for 10 minutes. read more

I took my daughters to see Coleman '72 in early May and we were all so touched y this performance. I have been a fan of this theater for so long, it's become a family tradition to go see their shows. Chay Yew is one of my favorite local directors and I don't miss any of their material. I thought the comedy was great and very well performed. The use of props is my favorite among these actors. The costumes were on point, acting was very free flowing, I had zero regrets and I'm looking forward to their November series this year. I'll definitely be updating you all on the show Snow White! We attended the outdoor event at the Mission at San Juan Capistrano. The event was well organized and very efficient. The staff was so friendly! We bought tickets the same day and ended up in section C. Blankets or low chairs only . We're in from out of town staying across the street. We took a blanket from the hotel but ended up sitting on the park bench. I had a great conversation with one of the staff at the water booth. Great to see such enthusiasm for the theater! American Mariachi dragged on way too long but we were so enthralled by the venue and the fantastic night that it really didn't matter. I hope this is a long lasting venue relationship. The South Coast Repertory Theater is a fantastic theater sitting adjacent to the Segerstrom Concert Hall off Town Center. The Theater itself houses several different stages each with their own configurations and layouts. The staff is professional and very helpful at ensuring you have the best experience possible and the facility is super nice with all the accommodations you could ask for. Picking up my tickets at the Box Office was a breeze (always something that worries me) and they immediately pointed me in the right direction for the correct theater housing the show. They have a pretty large outdoor courtyard with benches for you to hang out prior to showtime as well and makes for some great photos as well. The venue I was in was the Nicholas Studios (the smallest of the bunch) for a show with a unique take on the peanuts characters we all know and love. The show I attended was "Absolutely Filthy" which is centered around Pigpen who has since grown into a homeless man living on the street. Pigpen throughout the show runs into other characters from Charles Schultz's peanuts gang who he later finds out are attending the funeral services of his former friend Charlie Brown who passed away from encephalitis. The show was absolutely hilarious and filled with dark humor and adult themes and situations (for sure not for kids, this ain't your mama's Peanuts show). The play was very well done and huge props go out to the cast for their believable representations of the characters. The lead of the play (who literally hula hoops) throughout the entire play was spot on and really captivated people from start to finish. For those unfamiliar and without spoiling too much of the play the hula hoop is a representation of the dust cloud that follows the Pigpen character through life. It truly was very well done. As I stated the play did feature many adult themes as well as some nudity throughout so it definitely is not for children or those without an open mind. The parking for the South Coast Repertory shares the parking structure of The Segerstrom next door and thus costs $10. I opted to do some shopping and walking around at South Coast Plaza across the street and decided to just leave my car in the shopping center lot and make the trek over on foot. I am not sure what the policy on this is but I can say I was not alone as at least one other group did the same. They do have security on bikes patrolling the lot so park at your own risk. A great theater who is not afraid of taking on the darker plays who many stray away from. It appears the season is coming to a close but I will definitely be back for more shows next season. read more

This place made me a Lesbian. ........Wait. That's not right.......an Equestrian. ...............Uh.....hold on. Give me a second. I know this one. I'm not a raging Thespian, but I do read a great deal and though I'm not well versed in acting mechanics and terminology, I DO know that Creon and Oedipus aren't supposed to have leather jackets and machine guns!!!! Back in the day when I had more books than wrinkles, I came here for an extra credit assignment for a literature course I was taking in classical theater. Our assignment was to watch Antigone and identify as many inconsistencies as we could find with the set. The same professor also sent us to watch the movie Troy to ID the flood of incongruities set against classical literature and historical fact, but that's another story. Moving on..... Acting was great and the play was followed well, but leather jackets and machine guns? Glass table tops from IKEA and brandy from a decanter from Kosta Boda? WTF? It was a great time had by all and despite my strong dislike towards modernizing classical theater, I walked out looking forward to my next return. The presentation of the Repertory is very open, airy, and modern. Glass walls and bleached white paint add to a comforting hospital sort of feel....in a good way. Ticket windows are generous in size and allow for many patrons at once. Lobby area is long and narrow. It winds around like a bow and during intermission, there are coffees, teas, and alcohol. Yeah, alcohol. Bathrooms are kept very clean and the general atmosphere of SCP is welcoming in a casually elegant way. I've been here a number of times over the past few years and have always been pleased with the production quality. My most recent venture as a Yelper rewarded me with an amazing production of The Heiress. I was in awe at the acting and would like to return again and watch The Heiress a second time. We did not order tickets and were told that we could buy them at the window for $13 each after a $5 discount we had. Arriving 20 minutes before the curtain, we were told that rush tickets were $25 a piece. We looked at each other and wondered if we should return another night after buying tickets online. The young man at the window was very friendly and I guess he felt like helping us so he spoke with his manager and he offered us rush student pricing at $10 each. Neither of us are students. Front row, Center. No kidding. $20 for Front row, Center at the last minute. That just made our night and we were both tremendously pleased with the entire event. Looking around the theater, we noticed that all the people our age were towards the sides and the back. Everyone else immediate to us were at least two and a half times our age. Had we not gotten the discount, our seats would have been over $100 and out of our budget. It was an amazing evening that originally started off with second thoughts and fatigue. By the middle of the first act, I was awake. By the middle of the second act, I was almost in tears. At the end of the play, there was a standing ovation. Fantastic house of actors. South Coast Repertory is a great little theatre with fantastic plays. I was just recently here for Pride and Prejudice and it was so fun to watch. Mind you, I'm a big Jane Austen fan and I've both the BBC & Keira Knightley versions of the movie on DVD. I thought that the play was great and that the seats we had were splendid. There really isn't a bad seat in the house! We had center row M seats, which was the 2nd to last row but could see the stage fine without the need of opera glasses. Tickets are reasonably priced, but you can find discounts on GoldStar or the box office if you are a student or senior citizen. South Coast Repertory is located off of Bristol across the street from South Coast Plaza, next to the Segerstrom Center for the Arts. Parking can be found for a fee but you can park at a nearby restaurant or at the mall and walk. Come see a show here and support your love of the arts! read more

I've been to the SCR several times, and not once have I been disappointed! Great acting, nice sized theaters, plenty of parking (not free however, $10). They are not afraid to have productions of "off" color and/or taste, yet they still remain classy. Providing creative options as well as classics. Seasonal line-up is always intriguing too. I will say my favorite production was "In the Next Room: The Vibrator Play" -raved about it for weeks, still do years later. Every play has been excellent, staff is always very friendly... it's not just a "little theater in the OC", this is the real stuff, Maynard! Bravo Repertory and CHEERS too!! read more
