had the bottom done and some others on my westsail 43 done a few years ago and the only problem was the billing. this i could not believe!! was very sattisfied with the original quote on the estimate but when i got the final bill it came in quite a bit less!!!!! the work i thought she actually needed was more thatn was actually necessary!!! compared to a large yard to the north whose reputation is that the final bill is always more than the estimate. read more

South Coast Ship Yard is just a dishonest mechanic that happens to be in Newport Harbor. After years of being a customer I am done. Eric Josenhans is a liar. He cant be trusted to service a Duffy. Don't trust him with your precious yacht or sport fisher. On November 25th I called up them and said I needed a propeller shaft repacking and bottom paint done. He said "Bring the boat over for us to inspect, it might not need to be hauled out of the water" I bring it over and they inspect and say "Yep, it needs to be hauled out" (just like I told Eric on the phone) they then have an employee who hardly speaks English comes out and turn a wrench for 10 seconds to tighten up the shaft journal. The "service fee" for this work was $130! In addition to the $1,450 for the bottom paint and propeller shaft repacking. Eric said "Yea, anytime we have to drop everything to help a boat it's $130." Even though Eric was the one who told me to come over and I told them the problem over the phone and that it needed to be hauled out. Eric said he would email me service dates for haul out and service. He never did. After a third followup on December 3rd Eric finally replied that I should drop off the boat on December 5th, I confirm and deliver the boat to them at 8am on December 5th. On December 10th I ask for an update and remind him I need the boat back by Friday Dec 13th. On December 10th He replied "The boat is scheduled to be done by Friday the 13th, I'll keep you posted" (see images for screenshot of his email) On Thursday (December 12th) I check in and says NO WORK HAD BEEN DONE because they were "busy". This catches Eric in a lie from his email two days earlier because he never could have delivered a painted boat that wasn't hauled out of the water to dry a few days before. After 7 full days of them having my boat I was done with their stupidity. It just sat tied up bouncing against other boats for a week while Eric told me the boat was getting serviced. After 8 days of nothing being done I wasn't interested in giving them any more money so I picked up my boat on December 13th. No apology for their 8 days of incompetence and dishonesty was given. No attempt to make things right was offered. If they can't be trusted to service a Duffy and be upfront, I wouldn't trust them with a major project. read more

I spent weeks researching just the right shipyard to have work done on my classic wooden boat. It is a 1957 Chris Craft that had been neglected when I bought her 3 years ago. I knew this going in, that she would need a lot of love, and where the boat was (the Pacific Northwest), finding a shipwright was damn near impossible in the Portland area. So when I moved back home to OC, I started looking for a place out here for work on the hull (I actually started looking before I moved). Most yards today do not work on wood boats, and South Coast was one of the few that still do. After talking to Erick about the condition of the boat (still floating but leaking some water, engines not running, and I was living in her), he said, "bring her down, we'd be excited to work on her.". No talk of needing a survey, nothing about an inspection first. Just "bring her down to Basin Marine, they will take her off the truck and put her in the water. Well show with our tug and bring her to our shop and do an assessment, and give you a list of things that need to be done, and we'll go from there." So that's what I did. I arranged for transport ($10k), haul out ($900), and a tow ($750), scheduling and brought her down last week. She got here on Wednesday, but South Coast didn't show. Instead, Erick, Ben, the yard manager and one other showed. They didn't look for me until they had "inspected the boat.". Then the dance began, of all the reasons that they wouldn't do the work. Unsure if it would float (came out of the water on Monday and I lived on her for a year), may not withstand the tow (20 miles tow @ 3.5 knots on Monday, only 1 bilge pump of 4 needed to cycle about every 5 minutes). After that, it came down to $60k up front or $20k a month for 3 months just to do the minimum. Ultimately they walked, but said they'd be happy to work on her once she was "float worthy.". That last was from Ben. Come to find out that they had a bigger, better paying job and didn't want to take mine. So we are stuck at 4PM on a Wednesday, anyone that might be able to help has closed. We are now still on the truck when he should have been on his way to the next haul, and zero options. We had no option but to sit overnight in someone else's yard. Even if they would have offer to uphold at least part of what was agreed upon, towing to their yard, we would have had time to make arrangements. Long story short, we had every door shut because of outrageous "deposit and rent fees" in the range of $10k deposits and $1600/month rent for DIY space. The boat did come off the truck with an 11th hour solution, but it isn't optimal, and I fear that she'll have to be scrapped in the end as a result of them not honoring their word. Totally dishonest people that will say anything to get the potential job, and hold all the cards when deciding if they'll take it or not. So disappointed. They will not be touching our sailboat, or any other that I get in the future. read more

Our first time here with this business and our first experience started out a little rough. I wont bore you with the details but after dropping off my boat i walked away and was not pleased with the experience. Which is why they didnt get 5 stars. However, it is what happened once we picked up the boat that will most likely cause me to return. I found they had integrity and honesty. They could have performed work we requested and made another $1000 but upon their inspection they said everything was fine and the work didnt need to be done. Had they done as we requested we would have never known any better and they would have been a tad wealthier. That goes along way in my book! Eric was able to accommodate our boat on relatively short notice. Our stuffing box was replaced and the bottom was to be painted. Peter, the owner, showed us problems with peeling paint on our boat bottom. This is a problem that we were aware of but didn't think that it was severe as it turned out to be. We had the bottom stripped and properly prepped for an excellent bottom job. He indicated that we did not need an LP job but only a good wax job. The boat looks fabulous. We did have some problems with over spray from construction at the property next door. Telling Eric on Saturday morning lead to the problem being addressed by Wednesday. Three professionals came to my boat for 1/2 day and totally rectified the problem. Excellent customer service. We would definitely recommend and use this yard again. read more

We own a 1966 - 60' custom built composite sportfisher and have been hulling her out with Pete and the boys since we bought her. Absolutely top notch service, repairs, woodwork and paint jobs. They added a 54 foot by 42" deep by 8" wide custom built wooden keel to her years ago, giving her a new backbone and another 50 years of service. They rebuilt her stableizers, replaced shafts, rudder post, repaired chines, installed underwater lights, whatever she's needed below the waterline, as well as giving her the best paint job I've ever seen on an old wooden boat. They prepped and sprayer her 6 years ago, and today the gloss looks like she was painted yesterday. Paint is only as good as what it goes on, and what they did to her hull and topsides before painting is amazing. Perhaps most importantly, there has never been a single surprise when it comes to the bill. South Coast prides itself in total transparency. If they find an unforeseen issue, they explain the problem and costs associated with correcting it before starting work. Family owned and family run with integrity and pride. I have used South Coast Shipyard several times with 2 different boats, since 2009 and always had great service at a fair price. I currently have a 2009 Cruiser Yachts 447 and the black gel coat hull would become clouded and look faded a few days after being waxed (even when the gel coat was color sanded). I called 4 shipyards in the area to get a price to paint the hull with liquid polymer. Pete, the owner South Coast Shipyard, gave me a very fair price and the final product was AMAZING!!! The boat looks better now than it did when I purchased it. Every time I have used South Coast Shipyard, I have been very happy with the quality of their work and the level of service I have received from Pete and Eric. They have also always finished the job on time and delivered the boat back to me when promised. I will continue to use Pete, Eric and South Coast Shipyard for all of my shipyard needs. read more

I had been ripped off by another shipyard so badly I would never go back. South Coast was recommended, so I took a chance and ran my boat down to Newport from Alamitos Bay to have the bottom done and a new transducer installed. I am so glad I did. Eric and Pete are solid. They gave me a quote before I went down and after inspection added only a little work that I inspected and agreed was actually needed. The final bill was exactly what I was quoted. Surprise!! Never use this shipyard they use the old BAIT AND SWITCH tell you one thing and then try and charge for work that they said an owner can do. Wasted $250.00 in fule to ho to this yard only to be told I can't do whe work. The owner Peter could care less!! about you!! read more
