Christos at Soma Optical is hands down the best optician I have ever met. I have worn glasses all my life and have purchased eyeglasses from opticians all around Boston and in the various cities I've lived in across the country. Working with Christos was by far the best experience I have ever had. With other opticians I've found that they tend to just say "yes" to whatever you pick or to base their recommendations solely on style rather than paying attention also to fit and functionality. I inevitably left with glasses that never felt quite right or kept slipping down my face despite paying hundreds of dollars. Christos, on the other hand, is a true expert who knows how eyeglass frames should fit a face for maximum comfort and functionality while still working to find the best-looking frames for you out of his vast selection. After purchase, he is also meticulous about adjusting the frames for your face. Unlike other opticians, he actually has an opinion and can help you figure out how the frames ought to fit. And unlike most of the opticians I've purchased from in the past, he's genuinely skilled at adjusting frames and will really work with you and keep tweaking until the fit is *exactly* right. Without exaggeration the best shopping experience I've had in my life. I was in the market for a pair of sunglasses but was typically apprehensive about walking into optical shops: salespeople tend to tell you whatever you like looks good and vice versa. They don't discriminate between high quality brands and run-of-the-mill Luxottica subsidiaries. On top of that, I always have a tough time finding pairs that work due to my massive dome. Never again. I attended an appointment at Soma just before their closing time and was immediately greeted by the owners, a sweet and energetic couple who listen carefully to what you're looking for and work with you to get a pair of independently owned and manufactured glasses that look stellar. Their selection is unmatched in the USA. They know every factory they receive from, the history of each of the brands, what makes them special--foremost sunglasses scholars. Christos, the co-owner, gave me frank, honest feedback on every pair I tried on based on my facial geometry and style. I asked some questions about the pairs I tried and he told me fascinating tidbits about their makers. If he wrote a book on the state of the sunglasses industry, I'd read it. I walked out with a pair of sunglasses (adjusted free of charge using arcane, esoteric methods forgotten millennia ago) I am absolutely psyched to wear this summer, with confidence that if anything happens to them, he will happily repair them. Soma is without a doubt the coolest and most curated collection of designer and small batch eyewear I've ever come across. I'm tough on all my things and went in with basically the requirement of "i need your sturdiest pair you've got". Not only do I get complimented on the style and overall aesthetics of the glasses all the time but I am here to tell you that they did not ignore my need for tough glasses. These things have been trampled on by sloppy boat dancers, lost in a sea of bodies at Brighton Music Hall punk shows, and they still have not forsaken me. (Oh and for reference if you're like me, I picked up some chonky Native Sons. The store itself is gorgeous and the proprietors are kind, knowledgeable but most of all, passionate. You can tell they not only love what they do, but they want to give you a Special and personalized experience. Are they the cheapest option out there? Certainly not, quality costs extra. that's a fact of life. But I'll never go to another eyewear provider. They hooked me for life. I've never been particularly happy with my glasses. Cheap, bad fit, commoditized. The same goes for the experience of buying glasses. You walk into the store then C+A start lining up glasses that fit your face and preferences without being pushy. They nailed it off the bat for me but it was still fun to explore different options. Very fun and unique optical buying experience. Great selection of glasses here. I was in here for about 3 hours choosing the right frames. I never felt pressured by the owner to purchase. He went through all of the styles with me and helped me slowly narrow down to a few frames. If you're looking for high quality glasses that you wouldn't be able to find ordinarily, this is the place. I am almost 80 years old and have worn glasses for over 70 years. I am picky and I can tell you that this is the very best place I have ever found to buy a pair of frames. The selection at Soma Optical is absolutely amazing. And the service matches their choice of frames. They helped me select two fabulous new pairs of frames and talked me in to tying transitional lenses which I love. They even were willing to source an eyepiece part of my frames which I had broken and saved me money by not having to purchase a completely new frame.
