My very simple but oh so important tattoo. #luckyfew

I text to set up an appointment for 6 friends and I that were on a moms getaway weekend. They responded within 24 hours and got us an appointment with only a few days notice. We ended up with 4 different artists and all walked away happy. They got us in and out way faster than we expected. My tattoo is healing nicely. Most of us got a 2nd skin wrap which was really awesome too! The location was perfect, right next to the casinos and several bars. The shop was very clean and classy. They seemed to practice good sanitation in between each tattoo as well. I hope to take my husband back to Clay one day for an awesome anime tattoo.

Me and my husband went to Lake Tahoe back in OCT 2025. We had a great experience. We love our tattoos. They came out beautiful and as expected. Great customer service. We will definitely go back for more tattoos.

I love coming here for a tattoo when I'm in town and the vibe is great and fantastic! Plus the owner Brian is chill and awesome who did my wolf claw tattoo, also shoot to his two best guys in there who did my tat yesterday back to back Clay and Ryker did a wonderful job getting it done! Im gonna come back again like usual at this fine place!

I've been coming here for years when I visit this year I picked out a tattoo that was less than 2 inches black no color literally took the artist 11 minutes to do. I was charged $180 dollars a wrote them stating I thought it was excessive they wrote back that placement behind the ear is difficult that's why it was more. Unfortunately I won't be returning. 11 minutes of work for $180 is excessive I understand set up and supplies but literally not impressed. Unfortunately.

I contacted Kate at South Lake Tattoo through IG and she was very responsive/kind. We talked about design, made a deposit/booked an apt then a few weeks later she sent me a sketch of the design (a few days before my apt) and did a few tweaks. She was lovely. I've been trying to find a tattoo artist that wasn't only talented but also just a good, kind, easy to talk to person. My last tattoo artist wasn't that way and it made the experience uncomfortable. I love my new tattoo and am looking forward to getting more done. Her line work is perfection. The shop is clean, bright, and welcoming.

The example photograph. We asked for this exact design.

I want to clarify that the resident artists are incredibly talented and hardworking. This was our sixth tattoo from this studio and we trusted them (evidently too much). Where this studio lacks is their guest artists. We walked in for two tattoos, one of which was finger tattoos and left with work so poor that it was given to us at a discount (perhaps to try and curb our impending anger). Not only was the artist unable to understand the simple design we requested, even when shown direct examples. The tattoo was left UNFINISHED because he forgot to draw a line. As he was tattooing, he asked if he could add dots without clarifying what he meant. He then added shading that had not been discussed at all during the design stage, making the stars look more like smudges on the fingers. I cannot in good faith suggest this studio for walk-ins, as it seems they will let anyone who owns a tattoo gun set up and deliver the poorest work I have ever seen come out of an established studio.

Brian killed it with this piece! Exactly what I wanted, while being in a clean, honest studio, with a dope Vibe! It was ensured I was comfortable throughout the session. This one has huge meaning behind it for me.. more than anyone would know. Sharing a bit of my story, Brian incorporated the idea and symbolism. Big ups to this mans hands. Skills at its finest! Thanks again Brian! Do not hesitate to get inked at South Lake Tattoo. Great service from professional, talented artists!

Visited Lake Tahoe for my best friend's wedding. We kept seeing this shop whenever we walked by it. My best friend and I knew we wanted to get tatted, so I went on Yelp to start looking through reviews. Felt like this place was legit and it was! We requested for cute ghost tattoos. My ghost is holding a knife. My best friend's ghost is holding a shovel. Her friend's ghost is holding a scythe. The one who did mine and my best friend's tattoos was Russell - super chill guy who has been tattooing for over 9 years. I am sorry but forgot the name of the other guy but he was cool too and he has been tattooing for over 13 years. This shop is definitely a go to if you want to get tattooed. Don't forget to ask for Russell!

Brian Thomas did my tattoo and he did an incredible job. He is extremely detailed and professional. My tattoo came out better than I imagined. It was also finished quicker than I thought it would be, which wasn't really that important, but just noting he didn't waste time. The shop is extremely clean and comfortable if someone is there with you. I can't say enough about the quality of the entire experience. I will definitely be back.

Third awesome experience in a year!!! Brian is so amazing, listens to what you want and designs great tats. He has done both my ankles and this last week a sleeve on my forearm.

Amazing artists and great camaraderie, if you are in Tahoe you need to visit South Lake Tattoo, all the artists are great but my boy is Brian! He is an incredible artist! The whole shop vibe is more than inviting, it'll leave you wanting more.

Great work, nice place and great customer service. We had fun, thank you! Artist:Taylor Hatch

Snuck in to Tahoe and got a tattoo as I was driving through. Reached out to someone at the shop. Super professional and courteous. Very pleasant and nice people. Brian took care of my smaller tattoo idea along with the guy at the front desk. Enjoyed the short time there and recommend this location.

Ask the Community - South Lake Tattoo

Hi! Just wanted to clarify if you guys do piercings/have jewelry. I saw a recent review that said they got their nose piercing done, but your website says you don't offer this service. Do you guys still do this?

Hello, thanks for the question. We are a tattoo only studio.

Under the Douglas County district 7.1.2 persons between the age of 14 and 18 are permitted to get a tattoo with presence of a legal parent or guardian with proper documentation....Does this apply to your shop?

The body art regulation you are citing is for Southern Nevada and does not apply to our shop. We are governed by Northern Nevada and specifically, Douglas County. Per Douglas County - county code 9.65.020 "It is unlawful for any person to tattoo a…

Any information on previous owner? Older fella, biker look long grey beard?

Yeah that’s Larry, he travels during the winter. I can pass along a message for you if you like.

Are you open with all that's going on or do you just require a face mask also do you accept walk-in's?

We are still open, you can give us a call at the shop to check availability and procedures. (775)580-7707

Hello so I have a few questions about this place. 1. since this shop is located on Nevada is it legal for a 16 year old to get a tattoo with a parents consent? 2. are the needles sterile? 3. about how expensive are they?

Hello Kate, the shop is located in Douglas County - they do not allow anyone under the age of 18 to get tattooed. Our needles are sterile: We use disposable needles, so each needle that is used has never been used on anyone else. The cost of a…

My friend and I decided to go to this shop to get a new tattoo together…read more My initial thought of the shop was that the decor was cute. We were greeted by a friendly face and, it seemed like a nice shop. She let us know that Rickett had to run out to grab some ink for their printer and he would be back shortly. We totally understood. Things happen. We ended up waiting for him for about an hour. To me, I feel as if this was unprofessional. If you were out of ink, don't you think it should have been handled prior to your appointment? What started off as a simple errand to go and grab ink ended up causing your clients to wait an hour. I used their restroom and, their toilet was dirty. There was a yellow stain around the entire bowl. I'm not sure where else to mention this but, he went to take our temperatures and I made a comment about how wearing masks made me feel hotter. Temperature wise. Not in like I feel prettier kind of way. And I asked him if he felt the same way. The other tattoo artist made a comment to the effect of "oh yea I feel so much hotter with a mask on." I didn't mean it in a I'm hitting on you kind of way. I genuinely meant temperature wise. The other tattoo artist did not need to make this comment. And then to joke around about it for a few moments with her client? Unnecessary. He got his station set up and placed down my stencil. While he was setting up I asked if I could have mine done in a dark cobalt blue. He explained to me that the blue wouldn't look crisp and that it wouldn't hold well. I feel like now is a good time to note that I have a fair number of tattoos. Most of which are highly saturated with colors. Colors that include dark cobalt blue. I listened to what he had to say and ended up getting it mostly done in black. There are stars in the tattoo and I asked if they could be light blue. He again warned against it. At this stage though I rolled up my other sleeve and showed him that there was already the color I was asking for on my other arm. He seemed slightly disgruntled but, he ended up doing my stars in blue. I'd like to mention at this stage that his table was not wrapped, covered or, protected in any way. I thought nothing of it at the time but, now that I am dealing with an infected tattoo, I feel like it's only right for me to mention it to whoever else may be reading this. He started on my tattoo. Right away I noticed that he was heavy handed. I have other tattoos in "painful" places, top of my feet, my fingers, my inner bicep, and not a single one of them hurt like this one did. It took an hour give or take and then I was done. I looked at it in the mirror and initially I was very happy with the tattoo. I thought it was cute. He wrapped my tattoo and clean the station for my friend. My friend ended up getting her tattoo on her calf. She too has a fair number of tattoos and, I've sat with her in other sessions from other shops. She has never once been so uncomfortable. I offered her my hand to squeeze while she was getting tattooed and, I tried to distract her as much as I could. She was shaking, wincing and, had squeezed my hands so hard by the end of it that I had indentations in my hands. She apologized to the tattoo artist for shaking and, he told her "I just ignore it." I'm sorry. You ignore it? Who says that? Again, another side note, we were not given any aftercare for our tattoos. There was no instruction for when to take our wraps off. Nothing. We ended up paying and leaving. By the end of the night, my forearm was swollen, red and very warm to the touch. The next morning I woke up and, it was more swollen, more red and was very oozy. This is a good time for me to note that my tattoo got infected. So infected that I had to go to the doctors and, be put on antibiotics. There is a overall lack of consistency and quality in my tattoo. There are places that the lines are wobbly, you can see where his lines started and stopped and don't even meet up correctly. The anatomy of the hands is off. The proportions of the cat are also wrong. For someone who told me that the blue I requested wouldn't look crisp, the black doesn't look crisp either. I got this tattoo done 11 days ago. I had to go to the doctors for antibiotics and there is already scar tissue formed. Not only did I pay for a botched tattoo and for doctor expenses but, I now have to pay to have another tattoo artist attempt to rework it so it doesn't look so bad. It cracked and split open from infection. Definitely not worth the price I paid for this plus what I'll have to spend to have it fixed. Would I recommend this shop? Absolutely not.
