Sometimes that can be a red flag--but in this case, it turned out to be a hidden advantage. The food came out fast, fresh, and piping hot. From the first bite, I knew we were in for something special. The atmosphere has more of an old-school, no-frills vibe. It's not flashy or over-the-top, which actually made the experience better. I walked in with neutral expectations--not expecting anything extraordinary, but not expecting anything bad either. What I got completely exceeded that middle-ground mindset. Their menu offers a wide variety of options, but I went with something classic and comforting: a Philly cheesesteak (no mushrooms), upgraded with Cheese Whiz, along with sweet chili chicken wings and a side of onion rings. Let's start with the wings. The sweet chili sauce was perfectly balanced--just the right touch of heat paired with a subtle sweetness. Even fully sauced, the wings maintained their crispiness, which is not easy to do. If I had to critique anything, I'd say the blue cheese could be upgraded--but that's a minor note in what was otherwise a near-perfect execution. The Philly cheesesteak was equally impressive. The bread was soft yet sturdy, packed generously with meat, cheese, and vegetables from edge to edge. Every bite was balanced and satisfying. The onion rings were exactly how I like them--thin, crispy, well-seasoned, and fried to a perfect golden crunch. Everything from the food to the drinks, the atmosphere, and the customer service was on point. The only thing I passed on was dessert. The cookies didn't look as fresh as I would've liked, so I decided to skip it this time. That said, it didn't take away from an otherwise top-tier experience. Whether you're looking for a dine-in lunch, dinner, takeout, or delivery, South of Philly absolutely delivers. I genuinely don't think this place gets the attention it deserves. Have been to South of Philly twice now and I will say I will continue to come back. I have never had any issues when ordering from here. Each time I have ordered online during the week and reach time I have arrived (normally early) my food quickly comes out. Each time I was here the food has been amazing. My go to is a full cheesesteak with wiz, onions, and red peppers. I will say as well I have never had a need to get extra cheese since there is plenty on each cheesesteak. The fries are also very good. They are the double battered kind which are one of my favorites and they were still crispy after picking up and coming home. My wife got the Chicken Bacon Ranch Philly which I was luck enough to snag a bite of and it was also delicious. The only thing that didn't blow us out of the water were the Mac N Cheese Bites. They were good but not the best I have had. I will continue to come back each time I am in town. read more

Stayed in Dillsboro on a work trip. My coworker and I both love chicken wings, so we looked for a spot near our hotel. I said there is a Philly cheesesteak spot nearby with wings. He says he loves Philly cheesesteaks and wings... so it was almost serendipitous. You walk in and you're immediately greeted by the friendly staff. I got a large Original Philly and we shares buffalo and hot garlic wings. The Philly was good. Meaty and cheesy deliciousness!!! The bread was toasty on the outside and soft on the inside. It held in all the meat and cheese with no issues. This cheesesteak is as good as I've had anywhere else. Coworker agreed that the cheesesteak was really good. The wings were a good size, very meaty. The buffalo sauce was pretty standard tasting while the hot garlic was, in my opinion, quite tasty. I would definitely recommend this place to anyone thinking about dining here. read more

Cool place. Not fancy but clean. It took a little while to get my sub but I wasn't in a hurry. The sub didn't look very big at first but it was packed full of meat. The fries were good too. They didn't have unsweet tea which is my drink of choice but not a show stopper. They have joined the new class of restaurants who flip the screen over so you can add a tip. So, we have eaten there 4 or 5 times. On occasion the Cheesesteaks were great as well as the fried pickles. The register staff are not trained. On at least 2 occasions our order was wrong after waiting a long time. They did make it right. Now let's talk cleanliness. I am shocked at how FILTHY the place is. Months if not years of disgust! This is a great place with great food and a friendly staff. My wife loves the Philly fries and I like the Philly cheesesteak with the medium hot sauce. The food is consistently great and the staff is always friendly. They have about a million options for your sandwich or fries, so it's definitely a great choice for a family or large group since everyone can find something they like. Sometimes the options make them get a little ahead of themselves as a couple of times they've gotten my order wrong. Today I got Philly fries instead of the sandwich I ordered. Luckily all the food is good so it's not that big of a deal. However, they have a big picture window where you can see into the kitchen and I do have one recommendation for the owner: stop allowing your staff to vape in the kitchen. The staff member who took my order today could clearly be seen in the kitchen producing huge clouds of vapor. This is disgusting and hugely inappropriate for a commercial kitchen. I've been trying to find an authentic Philly cheese steak for nearly the entire thirty years since moving South... my search continues. Pros: I saw the fresh meat being cut. Good portion size on their cheese steak, no need to pay for extra meat or cheese Fast, served table side. Self serve beverages (Pepsi product, sweet and unsweetened tea) Cons: No welcome greeting, no departure come again; didn't feel welcomed... College kids could be under a lot of pressure, who knows, could be testing period. Sandwich was a bit salty, could have been from the Cheese whiz, or it could have been my old tongue not liking salt any more. Can't blame it on South of Philly, if you're sensitive to salt, select a different cheese. Again, plenty if meat, could have used more peppers, onions and mushrooms. We have eaten at this restaurant several times. It has always been a solid choice - probably a 4 * on our previous visits. Good, but not great. However, my wife and I were craving Philly Steak and hadn't been there in a while. So, we stopped by Friday evening around 8 PM. When we ordered, we should have known it was going to be a bad night. We ordered an original combo - and upon ordering, we were asked if we wanted it to be a combo. I had assumed that since the combo was in the name, they would have realized we wanted a combo. Apparently not, but that wasn't a big deal; we thought maybe the cashier was having difficulty hearing our order because of our masks. We could hear and understand her because her mask was sitting halfway down her chin. We noticed that only three tables were occupied, so we decide to eat in. The problem was, all of the tables were dirty. So, we clean our table, sat down, and began to wait. There were about four total orders/takeout pickups. Thirty minutes later, no food, but we could hear the staff seemed to be having a good time in the kitchen. Thirty-five minutes later, our food arrived, and my order was wrong. The server then took my sandwich to the back then brought it out, and later brought out my fries. So, forty minutes after ordering, I received my meal. The good: The sandwich was hot, as were the fries. The bad: They did not wholly slice the bun, so about an inch and a half on each end was still together - which is fine if you want a bread sandwich, not so good if you want Philly steak end-to-end. The order was wrong. The tables were dirty, but they did start cleaning them after we had been there for 28 minutes - yes, 28, I know because they texted us our receipt, and we started watching the clock after 20 minutes. The staff seemed to be having a great time, but the customers weren't. We don't want to hear the team playing around and joking in the kitchen while waiting for our food. We also don't like to see people belly laughing over food with their masks pulled down over their chin during a pandemic. Short version: The food was hot and good, but the order was wrong. Staff lacked attention to detail and seemed more inclined to having a good time than the cleanliness of the dining area (all the tables were dirty) or quickly preparing customer orders. read more

There's not much to write home about in terms of food in Sylva.... Except South of Philly. Their Garlic Hot Wings are legitimately the best I've ever had. I've tried almost every hot wing in Charlotte and this little place in Sylva absolutely blows them all away. I was so excited to hear of a new take out featuring Phila hoagies and cheese steaks. Growing up Philly we ate hoagies and cheese steaks all the time so I know my Philly food. South of Philly does not make the grade. I ordered an Italian hoagie and cheese steak from the new store on Tunnel Road in Asheville and was so disappointed....no oil on the hoagie, no oregano, just dry bread. No cheese, very little onion and waaaay to salty. Added salt just isn't necessary on lunch meats. The "cheese" steak I order with peppers and onions and provolone. Had difficulty finding any of the toppings. Ziggy's on Hendersonville Road is much better for hoagies and steaks. And they are from the Phila area. read more

The person that answered at South of Philly said that our order somehow "got lost" and asked us to place our order again.
