Nice winery in an interesting setting (I.e. Old church). They have pews you can sit at in the inside. The outside was very nice with a nice view of the land. It was unfortunate that I got a beer and the only size they had was 22 oz and it was $15. I when they had smaller beers, but other than that it was a nice place. Really neat that they rescued a church from the wrecking ball and moved it here from Shalersville. Beyond that, I really can't say much. Wines were ok. Service was ok. Ambiance was ok. We went during the winter, and will probably return in the summer and see if we have a different opinion. read more

A good time with the female parental unit. This winery is a rescued church--it's cool To see it from the outside-and to hear the story but the interior is not as exciting and it's not the prettiest of buildings (so blasphemous right!?). My favorite wineries have a lot to look at/to peruse to keep your interest but this winery is just the barest of bones. And to take home a bottle you literally have to ask the hostess--It can be nice for someone who enjoys simplicity but I am definitely not that type. The concord ice wine is superb however--and it really was a great day over looking a vast vineyard with a pleasant breeze/temperature while enjoying an ice wine. Good times. The gazebos are quite pleasant on a good weather day! But I can see where if the sun was blaring in from an angle on a hot day--it would be rather unpleasant. Had A nice glass of Trinity and shared a cheese plate ($8) with my husband. Both were great and you get a lot on the cheese plate: warm bread, cheese block, crackers apple slices and Hershey kisses! Wonderful atmosphere inside and out (overlooking the vineyards). read more

Went in just when they were opening up on a Sunday so we were the only ones there. Bartender didn't even acknowledge us. We walk up to the bar and she didn't even say hi.... My fiance' and i absolutely love this winery. We found it by accident while in the area for other business. We love their ice wines, she has her favorite I have mine. But the fact is both of our favorite ice wines come from the same winery. We learned all about the ice wine festival our first time there and have been to the festivals every year since. We love the place so much it is where we got engaged. I proposed to her in the back on the pavilion near the fireplace. We love the cozy setting of the re-purposed church. The history of the building is romantic in itself. I can agree with one point made by other commentators... there is a lack in food selection. But that's not why we go. They are not a restaurant trying to be a winery. I have to disagree with the rest of the negative. I have never felt rushed. And the staff have always been polite and informative. Recently visited this absolutely beautiful winery with a group of friends. It was such an amazing location. Sitting outside on the patio overlooking the vineyards was absolutely gorgeous. The inside of the old church was also great and the girl who served us at the bar was very polite and knowledgeable about which wines would suit each of our preferences. We got several different bottles of wine and each tasted fantastic. I would highly recommend this winery to anyone visiting the area. read more

We love South River Vineyards (SRV)!!! This is a wonderful place to relax with a bottle of wine in any season. As an added bonus, SRV offers an excellent cheese plate (created with loving care by the SRV staff (this is a family owned and operated winery...not a restaurant) on eco friendly materials). We have been frequenting SRV for several years. We started off with Temptation, moved to Riesling Reserve, to Creation, and as our taste in wines is ever expanding, we now enjoy the exquisite Semillion (I sneak in a glass of one of SRV's reds every now and then). Leave the tiaras and crowns at home! Remember, it's all about the wine! read more

Great wines, awesome location. No better place to go for the view and ambiance. The closest thing to experiencing Napa or Sonoma without having to travel the distance. I wish this could be kept a secret, but I also feel that this place deserves more recognition than what it receives. I live out of state, but always return here. read more

The best thing about SRV is the scenic setting - the church is pretty, and the pavilions are really nice, but my best time there was on a summer evening with a small group of friends, just sitting in our comfy lawn chairs out in the vast field, watching the sun set as we sipped our wine - we stayed this way for HOURS!!! lol Yes, the owner can be rude - he doesn't allow reservations for parties or weddings, and doesn't care for large, noisy groups. Now, don't YOU be rude by bringing beer to a winery!! I've never had a problem with him, but I try to steer clear!! I did once host a group of about 20 for an adult birthday party, and I called a week ahead and let him know. On the phone he said he had an extra table I could borrow, but when I arrived & asked for it, he said he'd never told me that!! Our party went on without a hitch, under the pavilion with the fireplace, and we had a great time. The bar setup is not good - it's a small bar, right there at the entrance, hence you have people standing in line, tasting, ordering, paying, as others are trying to enter - especially bad when a large group tries to enter!! It's just total chaos sometimes, and I DO often feel rushed to make a decision. The wines here are my least favorite of all the wineries...I think some of them taste downright odd, but maybe it's just me... I'd say try the place at least once! read more

My husband, friends and I went to South River winery last weekend to enjoy one of the last great nights before the winter winds . We brought a wonderful basket of goodies and enjoyed some of South River's many great wines in the outdoor pavilion with a roaring fire. We met some great people who wandered over to enjoy the night. We told my daughter and her boyfriend about it and they wanted to go. So packing another basket we headed out last night to enjoy another wonderful evening. Well, it seems it wasn't in the stars last night. Another party was there and they brought their own wood since there was now a lock on the wood shed. We were all having a great time enjoying the fire and our own little parties until the owner showed up. He was angry that we started our own fire and was especially angry that the other party brought beer to go with their wine. I could see why he was angry about the beer, but the fire? To make a long story short, he blew up and turned out the lights and ordered everyone to leave. Yep, even my family and I! We had no beer and didn't make the fire, we were just enjoying ourselves. Pretty rude. This is the second time we have seen the owner blow his top!!! Any way the night wasn't ruined. We headed to Harpersfield Winery and had a truly great time. We won't be going back to South River anytime soon. read more

Without a doubt, South River is my favorite of the six or seven Ohio vineyards I have visited. Their wines are excellent across the board. They tend towards the dry side (not typical Ohio cough syrup) and their dry Reisling is particularly good (it is actually bordering on off-dry, and is easily the nicest Ohio wine I have tasted). As others have said, the location is beautiful; it is located in an old, rebuilt church, and they have built an expansive patio/terrace overlooking the vineyard, where you are welcome to sit with a picnic brought from home and enjoy the view. Pack some snacks and grab a flight (four generous tastes for about $10). Highly recommended. read more

This winery is superb. We had the tasting flights and a cheese plate (which was very good). Then sat on their large Romanesque terrace and took in the view, and then walked amongst the vines. Really made my bf's birthday! Can't wait to return! read more

I adore this winery it is by far my favorite in the area. The fact that you can sample a few and then purhcase a glass and sit and breathe in the views makes me feel like I am in another country and simpler time. My favorite wine offered is the Riesling Reserve. I wish I made it up there a more often. The ladies at the bar are so helpful and delightful. My husband/driver and I have been there 3 times in 2011 and enjoyed each trip. On our first trip we got the cheese plate which is generous for a hungry person drinking wine in a small business. Our next trips we have since been bringing a small picnic of our own and love it. I am palnning my next trip there during the Ice Wine Festival. In an area with many wineries that offer a party atmosphere this is a great place for a wine lover like me to sit relax and drink a wonderful glass of wine. I wish that they sold their wines in my local grocer. Please give them a try the next time you are in the area, it really is worth it! read more

A group of my friends and I (18 of us) Planned at trip to Geneva to kind of do a little winery tour. We rented a small chauffeured party bus so we could all ride together. I E-mailed South River Winery about 4 weeks before our trip, letting them know the number of people that where coming the date and time that we would be arriving in a small bus. They E-mailed me back and explained that because of the holiday weekend (Labor Day) that they may not be able to accommodate all of us inside, but we could buy a bottle inside and take it out back to enjoy. This was the first winery of 5 that we planned on visiting. When we arrived one of the guys stepped out of the bus with a beer in hand and was immediately meet in the parking lot by a very irate man yelling at him and our driver to close the door and not let anyone out. I tried to apologize for the beer and explain to him who we were and that I E-mailed ahead of time to let them know we were coming. (My friends and I are all close to 50yrs old or older) It wasn't like we were a bunch of drunken kids, this was our first stop! He kept yelling at the driver to close the door or there would be trouble. Now I have been to South River in the past, and it is a very nice location and the wine is ok, but after this I will never recommend it to anyone. There are many other wineries in the area that were more than accommodating and glad to have us there. The owner of South River Winery seems to have anger issues as you can read in many of the other reviews on this site and many other review sites. read more
