This was one of the most badly managed restaurants I've ever been to, and it really is a shame because the food itself was legitimately decent. This was a last minute brunch choice for my top-tier chum who literally went to the school of hospitality and I on our last day in Louisville. We'd been looking at some of the gorgeous old houses in Old Louisville but couldn't find a brunch spot over there. I remembered that there had been some interesting looking establishments in Butchertown from our bourbon tour the prior day, so we came over here. It was a Saturday morning and decently packed, but South Seas turned out to be a weird combo of a brunch restaurant, a tiki bar and a mini golf course. Throughout our time there, young adult customers asked how to utilize the golf course, and the whole place just seemed geared toward more of a party at the beach kind of crowd versus a normal brunch crowd. I don't ultimately think that was our specific problem, but I'm guessing it didn't help that the business model was weird and it wasn't clear what they wanted to be. We didn't like the vibe immediately, and most of that was due to a specific waitress who looked like she'd rather be anywhere else than at her job. We waited for several extra minutes as she sloooowly walked from area to area, clearly disinterested in what she was doing. That wouldn't be acceptable if the place was super empty with just one or two customers, and it certainly wasn't okay when there were people waiting to be seated (and we noticed a lot of customers sitting at empty tables with no food and/or drinks). If we weren't on a quasi-schedule on our way to the airport, I probably would have pulled the plug right then and there and spent a few extra minutes trying to find a better option nearby. Thankfully we didn't get that specific waitress, and ours was at least a little friendlier and energetic. It still took a VERY long time to order and receive our food (we immediately requested the check when the food came up). It wasn't just the lackadaisical approach to service either - their payment system is incredibly ineffective (at least for this type of business, given how sluggish everything moved), where the waitresses just sat there for up to several minutes with those portable credit card processors at the table as the customers slowly went through the key prompts. What we both found mystifying is that the waitresses could have made lemonade from lemons and used those few minutes to quickly bus or visit other tables. They did neither, and the one waitress unprofessionally hung out in the accompanying booth for one of these payments with her knees on the seats just hanging out. We saw the manager pop out twice VERY briefly and not to actually manage - she quickly walked in and out, didn't address any of the very obvious service/hospitality issues going on in the restaurant and then...went back to the tiki bar, where she was just hanging out on her phone. Just terrible, and there's no excuse for it. If she'd been able to tear her eyes away from her social media feed for 30 seconds and actually see what was going on or not going on in the establishment she was allegedly managing, she could have told her waitresses to work with a sense of urgency and remember to smile every once in a while at the paying customers. Maybe she also could have taken the initiative to replace the toilet paper in the bathroom, but don't worry - my friend handled it free of charge. The South Seas French Toast? Really tasty, which means that the cook in the back at least knows how to work independently/without being managed (I guarantee they weren't since the cook wasn't stationed in front of the tiki bar). So many unforced errors. I hope upper management/ownership really takes a strong look at what happened here and makes efforts to fix it. But if your manager is just sitting on her phone instead of properly instructing the staff to do their job, she's the one stealing money from you, not them. read more

Went here for brunch on Mother's Day. Quirky place with an indoor putt-putt course spanning two levels of an older building intertwined with tables/booths and a huge upstairs bar with festive lighting. We enjoyed the vibe - although it seemed like a tiki/Hawaiian-themed bar would be playing Hawaiian/luau-type music instead of random tunes. Anyway, no biggie. It's a cool place. Service was attentive though a bit slow at first, We ordered drinks - a Miami Vice and a Grilled Pineapple Margarita. They were decent, but didn't knock our socks off. Wife had the French Toast with a side of bacon, which they forgot, then upon bringing it to the table it was undercooked. I had the Cali Burger (double smashburger) with tater tots and it was a 10/10. Beware that some of the cocktail prices on the website are outdated - ours were $1 more than what was posted. Ok, let's start with the positives. We originally had a reservation for 6 and ended up having more people show up than planned. They were easily able to find a corner round booth that fit all of us. So many thanks for that! And if you go, just know that even though parking is paid, they have a QR code inside that will validate and give you free parking so don't pay before you go in. The Brussels Sprouts and all our appetizers were quite good! The place is quite cute - a little small but charming. On to the disappointing part of this review. Our service was really lacking. The waitress would completely ignore my friend who asked questions and turned to talk to someone else at our table. At first I thought she didn't hear her but she did it multiple times and it was rude. She also forgot about us after the apps came out. We waited and waited and had to flag her down to order our mains. Then, the food that came out seemed like it had been sitting a while because several of us felt our dishes were lukewarm. When it came time to split the bill, she didn't remember what anyone had and had to go through each person, which took forever. We had another reservation at 8 and were late for that because of the hold up here. No joke, we arrived at 5:30 and did not get main food until after 7 and checks until almost 8 because everything was so slow. That's quite a long time, in my opinion. The bar service wasn't great either. We got ignored and drinks took forever to make. If I could give this place 0 stars, I would. We didn't event get to eat here. First of all, the area for some odd reason smells like a mix of bile, feces, and something rotting. Six large pieces, easy to share or make as your meal. The sweet chili has a good kick. Queso was smooth and flavorful. My husband is allergic to plantains and they offered him flaky wonton chips. Cauliflower nuggets. So yummy that I don't know it was cauliflower. They come with several starters. The pork sliders were okay - I was surprised that despite the various toppings that I still found them a bit bland. Maybe it was because my starters were amazing? While stopping over in Louisville for the afternoon/evening, I Googled what my family could do for the night. This place was came to the top and I am so glad I found this little gem of a place. I'm into tiki vibes and tiki drinks and my family can't say no to anything tropical, so this fun mini golf/restaurant/tiki bar was a great place to spend the evening. The mini golf course is creatively tucked into the building on two different floors. The holes are small but actually offer a decent challenge. Each one is uniquely themed after a famous tiki drink such as the Zombie, Saturn, and Jungle Bird. Such amazing creativity throughout! Now are the tiki drinks as good as the tiki golf? They are! And the best thing, you bring your drink with you while you golf. I tried the tried and true Mai Tai and my wife tried the Saturn. Both drinks were great. We liked the Saturn so much, I know make it on the regular at home. Staff and the vibe is laid back and very chill. Kids are welcomed to golf with adults so it is fun night out for the whole family. What drew me in? Rumor has it (eg Instagram reels) that South Seas is a great date spot. Can confirm - it's fabulous for both a fun date or groups. And the menu - a unique blend of SoCal, Mex, and Hawaiian that you don't find anywhere else. What made my experience extra special? Two things - first, the half price Thursday margarita special certainly helped! The drinks were really tasty, each felt special regardless of the 'deal' whereas at other places it's a half hearted well drink. Not here. Second, the food was awesome. We split the appetizer short ribs which were delightful and generous, and the pineapple fried rice and still took home leftovers and I relished eating those, too. That elusive 5th star missing? Although it was a beautiful day, the outside patio wasn't open, and the upstairs bar was not open. Also, we had an unfortunate chip in a margarita glass that our server took care of right away. Honestly really disappointed, I tried the blackberry soft serve margarita and was having a (very mild) allergic reaction to, so I asked if there was anything else in the marg other than blackberry. The server said no, which I took at face value, I also didn't like it so I stopped drinking it. When the checks came I asked a different server if there was orange or pineapple to which they said yes. I explained my allergy and that I didn't like it, they said the extra ingredients are technically secret. A little miffed that the other people who didn't like the margs got theirs taken off but I expressed I was allergic and was told "citrus will do that". Instead we had a fantastic meal, superb drinks, and our server was fun and attentive and we had a great night out! The short ribs were tender and lightly coated with a delicious sweet sauce that complemented it well. While we didn't play mini golf, they do have that option available and it makes the place look like a lot of fun. It's very vibrant and eclectic, great for any age. We sat on the upstairs patio, perfect weather, and even better food. Super kind and helpful staff, and I literally licked my plate clean. The salmon, salad, and mac and cheese was to die for. South Seas is one of my favorite underrated food places to visit in Louisville. I've never had a bad meal there, and the drinks are sugary, full of alcohol, refreshing, and delightful. I also love the vibes inside, from the bright colors to the various beachy shows playing on TVs. Until recently, there was one thing missing when we would go: a crowd. With reasonable prices, MINI GOLF, plenty of parking, and a direct line to the soccer stadium, there are many reasons to stop by. Just last October before a LouCity game, a friend and I sat at the bar by ourselves to devour ribs and tots. However, there does seem to be a crowd shift in recent months. My wife was craving tacos and mini golf, so we went to South Seas on a recent Saturday night, expecting to get a table and chill. Happily, I was wrong. It was packed! We grabbed two seats at the bar because there was an hour wait for a table. My wife and I had tacos, a margarita, and then some gluten free tiramisu, courtesy of Chef Ange from Silly Axe Cafe. That dessert was unbelievable! We were able to play a round of mini golf as well. It's an incredibly cool course, that will test your skills. They packed the game in very creatively, but if you go and there's a crowd, just be sure to grab a drink and be patient. I hosted a Meetup group event for several people and we were all super excited to try this place out. There were several great points, but a lot was left to be desired. I will say that it was VERY busy this night. They were only operating on reservations. We didn't even end up playing mini-golf because of the number of teens and adults gathering at each hole. It was packed. PROS: It's a gorgeous space. Very colorful and the patio looked great. The presentation of the food looked AMAZING. There was a parking lot where your parking was validated for free - that's super convenient. The menu had a lot of great items on it. There was so much that I wanted to try. And I think several people in our group liked their food a lot. CONS: We were seated in the "party room" and I think that was a big reason for the disappointments in our experience. It's a room upstairs where there are both tables and mini golf stations. Our space was three round tables pushed together. The people in our group seated on the outside were right in the path of people walking to the golf station. It was both loud and uncomfortable for them to have people so close in their space. The food was fine, but I think the biggest disappointment was our drinks came out super late. We ordered, got our food 30-40 minutes later, and then got drinks about 10 minutes after that. A couple of us declined our drinks but I think they comped the drinks from those that kept theirs - which was a nice gesture. I definitely want to give this place another chance one day because I think it has potential to be great. I had really high hopes for the place. We ordered 4 drinks: soft serve margarita, blue Hawaiian, painkiller, and Miami Vice and didn't really love any of them. They were a bit too strong, a Miami Vice is my favorite mixed drink ever and I couldn't drink theirs. The blue Hawaiian was the best of them all. For food we ordered the sweet and sour chicken, the pineapple fried rice, and chips and queso. The food was great but it doesn't feel like you get nearly enough meat, it was pretty much all rice even with an extra $10 for shrimp added. So glad I found this spot. Walked in as a party of one and sat at the bar. Derek was the bar manager on duty. I ordered the tacos de papa y rajas and a Zombie to drink. Derek made sure that I was ok with the drink ingredients because it had cinnamon syrup in it and I took a chance. What a great choice! It was not at all an artificial cinnamon taste. In fact, it was just a faint amount that enhanced the rest of the flavors. My food was delicious as well. The vibes spoke to my heart and had great conversations with everyone working there. The theme and concept of this place is what draws you in. To fit with the South Seas theme the TVs could display more Hawaiian, Pacific Islands, or Polynesian themed shows. Although it was nice to hear some upbeat music, the idea of sticking with an island theme would also be more ideal. We were greeted and seated promptly. Service was ok. The portion size of the French Toast did not seem to match that of its price tag. We recently visited another local restaurant nearby that offered 3x the amount of food for nearly half the price. The pancakes were perfectly fluffy. The fruit were small bites but did compliment the dish well. The syrup did not seem to capture the passion fruit flavor that was listed. Not sure if it's the brand used or the way they mix it. There are no side items listed as an option to add to your meal, but you can ask for it to be added. However, the cost of my add-ons was only $2 less than one of the other meals on the menu. If the coffee wasn't refillable, it might now have been worth the price. We didn't stay to play a round of golf but may consider another visit with friends at a different time. This may be ideal for a quick date night for those in the area or a group night out with friends. We came for brunch so it will be interesting to see what to try on a dinner some time. read more

Flavor was great and I really love seeing restaurants with a thought out mocktail menu vs just having a few NA beers. * Crab Rangoon Dip - This was the real winner out of everything we tried. Perfect texture. Pronounced crab flavor. Light and crispy fried wonton chips. Get this. * Loco Moco - This could be excellent, but it desperately needs a few tweaks. The rice was dried out and almost crunchy. The mushroom gravy was delicious, but the dish could've used more of it. Hamburger was a bit dried out. The whole thing was just a little under-seasoned. * The Duke - This is your standard diner breakfast, except with the option of spam. I like my spam a bit crispier and the "garlic breakfast potatoes" didn't really have any garlic flavor. Besides the Loco Moco, the dishes were all fine, but just not as exciting and well executed as the menu led me to believe it would be. I ordered 1 cocktail, 1 mocktail, an app, two mains, and dessert. Total was $73 before tax and tip. I ordered quite a bit, but the quality of what I had just didn't feel like it justified the cost. Well, this is certainly an upgrade from when it was Hogfathers Pizza, the interior is cute and I had no idea there was a second floor, which is where my friend and I were sat. We just decided to get a bunch of apps and drinks, and so we got the FIRECRACKER LUMPIA (Eggrolls filled with a mixture of kahlua pork, carrot and shaved cabbage, served with sweet chili sauce). These were good, a bit larger than what I think of when I hear "lumpia", but all in all no complaints. The COCONUT SHRIMP (7 pieces of crispy shrimp served with mango habanero chili sauce). These were very nice except I wish the sauce had been spicier or something because it really just tasted like Chinese duck sauce to me STICKY RIBS (Tossed in a honey sriracha glaze, scallions, sesame seeds). These were really good and fall-off-the-bone, some of the best ribs I have had in a while. My only issue was with the service. When we were sat we were told that a new person would be shadowing, which is fine by me, been there done that! But then they both kind of disappeared? And our server really did not do anything after taking the order, did not bring us plates or napkins or anything (we had to ask the bartender), other people ran the food to us. We just generally felt neglected which isnt a good look when the place isnt even half full. Maybe we just hit an off day? The atmosphere was amazing! Particularly loved that Baywatch was playing on the tvs. The Big Kahuna burger is so delicious! I had never tried grilled pineapple on a burger before, but it was so good! If you're looking for a fun family night out, look no further than South Seas. We enjoyed a round of mini golf which starts upstairs and ends downstairs with 2 more holes. Total of 9 holes; custom made course. Very unique design. You can tell how much work went into all the detail around this establishment. The place was not as busy as I was expecting for Friday night. We were the only ones upstairs for a little while. Shortly we were joined by other families with young kids. The staff is welcoming and gracious. It's locally owned by a husband and wife team that only took over the business 3 months ago. After mini golf, we decided to try out their dinner menu. It looks like during the week they do have happy hour until 6. There's an extensive speciality drink menu as well as beers on tap. There are also plenty of grub options. The chips and dips sampler was stellar! We loved the queso and I was happy that it wasn't spicy at all. The quac was freshly made and so were the chips. My poke bowl was smaller than I expected when it came out but just the right portion size for me to finish the whole thing and feel satisfied.
