What a fun, busy place. The upstairs, main area is where you will find the bowling lanes. With that familiar bowling ball bounce noise with the clatter of the pins falling. Bar up here to serve you your libations. If you come here for an event, it is most likely in the downstairs area. If you are come for an event, use the other entrances to enter. I had no idea about this until I had gone upstairs and they directed me to the area. Your best bet, stay inside here as much as you can. Outside has an odor, so yeah, keep yourself inside, that's the only bad thing about this area. I guess the odor all depends on which way the wind blows. The downstairs portion of this place is huge. Offers a lot of options and is a great place to hold an event. There is a bar down here as well serving up your drinks. But there are more activities down here than just the bowling lanes upstairs. Darts, pinball, karaoke, pool tables, and probably the better of the floors here. Not taking anything away from the lanes upstairs, but you can only bowl so many games. If you are looking for a place that will offer you more things to do to fill your entire night. read more

3.5 overall. Another visit to Vernon Lanes for both bowling and dinner. We were there on a Wednesday night and even at 7 PM, we were the only lane reservation. It was quite some time before we saw any other bowlers. I do wish that you could rent (during some of the weeknights) by game instead of by the hour. It's really tough to get in a full game and paying for two hours of bowling isn't always in the budget. Otherwise, no issue with the bowling lanes or shoe rental. Food was hit or miss this time. The buffalo chicken dip was a hit amongst several of us; however, my husband only ate a few bites of his fish and said that it was much too fishy. The burger also received mixed reviews. We didn't realize it came as two patties. While it was a very hefty portion, half of the group felt like it was boring. Service was quick and friendly. The parking lot does get quite full, especially if there is trivia downstairs. You may need to locate a spot along the street rather than their parking lot. read more

Super cool spot! We originally booked two lanes, then some friends weren't able to come at the last minute so they easily adjusted our reservation so we didn't have to pay for a lane we weren't going to use. Very clean and there's plenty of parking in the lot. Reservations were easy to do online and I liked the vibes inside, especially the pretty neon sign! You do have to count the pins that are knocked down for your score then enter each time you bowl on an iPad, which is different than other places so just note that and that it doesn't keep score for you. Vernon lanes is a good spot for bowling locally. They under 10 lanes, so be sure to book in advance. I've never had any luck getting a lane just by walk-in. Give how small the venue is, it feels a bit cozier and more hip than other spots around town. They have a full bar, and it's a good spot for pint or a soft drink. The food is not that great - tried the nachos and spinach artichoke dip, which were both cold and underwhelming. The kids meals were fine but also a bit spartan. Additionally, I put a $10 deposit for our reservation that was suppose to be credited to my bill but wasn't. Wow! I had always wanted to go to Vernon Lanes and finally went with a bunch of friends to celebrate my birthday. The staff here is SO friendly, kind, and accommodating. They were responsive to all my questions, made us fabulous drinks the night we went, and everything was affordable. First off let me start with they messed up my order. I wanted a hot latte and they gave me cold. Now they did remake it at no charge. So I was happy with that. My next negative is that they charged me $3 for literally a tiny piece of bacon. It was literally one strip of bacon broke in half. I was suppose to get 2-eggs. This was a fun night with my colleagues. Vernon Lanes is a small bowling alley with around 8 lanes, a nice menu and bar service. On the bottom floor is a wide open bar that would be good for events. We had 8 people and were given one lane because one was out of commission. I didn't mind because we got to bowl just enough. Everyone ordered drinks including beer, margaritas and other mixed drinks. The margarita wasn't great but it was fine since I only had one. They keep water out so people can self serve. The facility is unique and the staff was friendly. You reserve the lane by the hour so if you have just a few people you can bowl a good bit. We also had food. I had the schnitzel sandwich which was awesome. Others tried different items with varying degrees of satisfaction. The person who ordered the nachos said they were super spicy. The shrimp po boy was a hit. read more

Last Thursday I met my older brother at Vernon Lanes for lunch. Ten days earlier I celebrated my birthday there with family. The earlier visit convinced me to return. Their food is excellent and the staff are friendly. On Thursday we both ordered Arugula Salad with chicken and we both gave it high marks! Previously I had their smoked wings which were tasty. Jessica was our waitress who took care of all of our requests with a smile. And I could go on about the building itself which was renovated oh so nice and carefully restored. And don't forget, there are eight restored bowling lanes that beg to be used! You're not hip if you don't visit this outstanding entertainment building. Did I mention live music and craft beers? Honestly I thought this place was gonna be a dive bowling alley from the outside but the inside says different. Customers were dressed cute and the bowling alley itself was very sophisticated. It only has 8 bowling lanes- so unless you have a reservation on the weekends you aren't bowling until about 11PM or 3 hours on the waiting list. That's where they lost a star for me. Drinks were decent- I got an espresso martini and it was tasty. The gin drink was very plain and nothing to write home about. My friend got their Paloma and it was pretty gross, just tasted like simple syrup. We didn't try the food so I can't comment on that and I can't comment on the actual bowling lanes since we waited 3 hours and didn't get to bowl :( I would recommend this place, staff was friendly and it's a cool place to hang out but make sure you have reservations for the lanes or get there at least 3 hours before you are wanting to bowl to be added to the walk in list. read more

Had no idea they had a massive bar area downstairs! Went to see a DJ, and had a very nice time. The bartenders were very attentive. The bar and bathrooms were clean. They had pool tables and dart boards. Seemed like plenty of room to dance. My only critique would be the lights were up too high for a DJ set. Would have been nice if it were a little darker in there. And I would recommend putting hooks (for jackets/purses) under the bar and adding a step/rail for feet. This is a cool spot. Fun little bowling alley with surprisingly good food (love the burgers and fries), a nice beer selection (full bar too), and friendly, helpful staff. Great place for birthday parties and such (which seems to be a consensus view, as I've never been there when there's not one going). Had the best time at Vernon Lanes! We went on a Friday night around 9:30pm. They have a parking lot right next to the building so parking is a breeze. To our surprise, we didn't have to wait for a lane to open. The owner & bartender were great! The owner told us about the history of the building & the bowling alley. Visited yesterday with a group of friends and it was an outstanding experience. We came in for the weekend brunch/bowling special and it did not disappoint. Hidden gem! It was date night for us and I was looking forward to doing something fun. My husband had told me about this place a long while ago. On a whim I wanted to check this place out for drinks and bowling. We were greeted immediately at the bar and the vibe had us sitting down and chatting away. We ordered the pretzel sticks with beer cheese and it's by far the best I've had. So good! My husband was happy with the draft on tap. I ventured out and tried Long ice night that was recommended by the bartender when I asked about the coffee menu. She didn't stir me wrong either. I wouldn't ever normally try something like this even though I'm a coffee lover. I'm so glad I gave it a try. I had two of them and only stopped because we did have to leave later at some point. We enjoyed the vibe and got lost talking that time flew by. We skipped our dinner plans and ordered food here. This is where I took a star away for minor things. My husbands burger was coated with too much burger sauce. Like 3x extra the normal amount a burger would have and was too messy to pickup. My fried chicken sandwhich was small and tough. The fries were perfect though. We never got a chance to bowl but that just means we have to come back! We definitely enjoyed our date night here. Disappointing Experience at Vernon Lanes in Louisville KY - Never Again We decided to visit Vernon Lanes on a Sunday morning for brunch. Having been there before and enjoyed the food, we thought it would be a good idea to return. Unfortunately, our experience this time was anything but pleasant. We were the first two customers as they opened, and our initial interaction was with a bartender whose attire was, to put it mildly, revealing and unprofessional. Lets just say that she gave new meaning to "Belly Up to the Bar" Inappropriate for a restaurant. She asked us what we wanted three times instead of greeting us properly--something as simple as "Two for brunch?" would have sufficed. After seating us, she informed us that we needed to provide a credit card in order to place a food order or pay when our food came out. I found this policy to be both unnecessary and offensive, especially given that we were the only customers in the restaurant. I am not a flight risk. When I expressed my concerns, she sent over a man who identified himself as the manager. Rather than explaining the policy professionally, and offering to waive the requirement, he immediately went on a defensive rant, justifying the pre-payment requirement by saying that when they have 500 people in the venue, they can't keep track of everyone's tabs. Fair enough--but at that moment, the place was empty except for us. Instead of handling the situation diplomatically, and listening to his customer, he became rude, dismissive, and unprofessional, repeatedly talking over me and escalating the situation. At one point, I reminded him that I was his customer and I thought that we deserved at least some level of respect. His response was . . ."You're not a customer yet." That was the final straw. We got up and left while he continued on his rant and talking. He definitely should not be in a management position! I dine out frequently and have never encountered such a policy--or such poor customer service. This was easily one of the worst experiences I've had at a restaurant, and I will not be returning. I strongly urge others to reconsider before dining here--no one should be made to feel like a criminal just to enjoy a meal. read more

I came in with a party of 8 from out of town. I ordered the Clinton Cod and it was burnt and nasty. The server asked for a card to start a tab and we could split it however we wanted. A different lady rang us up then said she was overwhelmed and would NOT split our tab. Refused actually. It was a pain as everyone had to pay $43 and some people only got a $12 meal. This same lady harassed our party about bowling and said she had no record of us paying and tried to kick us off the lanes. She also never came to check on us at our table after a while. Staff was friendly, and we enjoyed our bowling game. Really love the size, history, and ambience of this alley. Unfortunately, I couldn't give it more than three stars because the chicken and waffles that my kids and I all ordered were atrocious. The chicken was pounded super thin and was very dry and bland, and my son's chicken had dark gray meat in it. The waffles were very sour tasting, like maybe the milk had gone bad. Pretty cool neighborhood bowling alley, bar and food service establishment. We popped in late one evening for a dessert and they had apple empanadas on the menu. They were small and 5 to an order and came with dipping sauce and we added a dish of ice cream to go with them. The empanadas were pretty good but a tad over cooked for my taste. The ice cream was very good and creamy. We sat in the bar area and watched folks bowl. There are only about 12 bowling lanes but well kept and looked to have a good ball selection. Glad the bathroom was in the basement or I would have not gone down there. It is another huge area where the kitchen is housed, lots of tables and some game and a whole different atmosphere down there. Not a lot of parking from what I saw but there could be more in the back. Since it was late when we got there parking was not an issue. We loved the vibe and bowling was super fun, in the middle of us bowling they turned the lights all on and turned the tvs off and there was still plenty of time to play. I spent YEARS on bowling leagues at Vernon Lanes in my early 30's. Just walking in door fills me with nostalgia. Founded in the 1890's, I've been told it was the oldest running bowling alley in the country. At least it was until a few years ago when it closed. I was thrilled to hear of their reopening. Tonight, we went there for a Christmas party. We had a buffet in the remodeled lower level. I feel like describing the food as elevated bar bites would be a disservice. It might still be a bowling alley, but the food rivals some the better food establishments this city has to offer. The catfish, the schnitzel, the beer cheese, the apple cinnamon empanadas....they're in a league of their own when it comes to bowling alley food. The condiments selection left little to be desired. Cajun tarter for the catfish, the maple sauce for the fried chicken, curried ketchup, the pickles, the pickled red onions, the difference was in the details. If you're on the search for the perfect place to have a catered event, I don't think the Vernon Club will disappoint. Their bourbon selection was what you would expect in Louisville. I tried an old-fashioned with Woodford, one with Weller, and one with Angel's Envy. All flawless. I missed the familiar faces from the good ole days, but the service was fast and friendly, honestly...it was top-notch. The historic charm is preserved, but the updated bars upstairs and down, the remodeled bathrooms, the intimate 8 lane space, this is THE spot for a party venue. The old jute box is updated, but it still there. Long story short, for a casual night out, or for anything really, The Vernon Club is a solid choice. I didn't think it would ever be the same when it closed. And it's not. The frozen pizzas weren't bad, and the wings...they were always amazing, but this place has become something totally different, while still maintaining that authenticity that always made The Vernon Club exceptional. I've had some of the best times of my life at Vernon. I've created lasting friendships that I know will be lifelong. Hats off to those that undertook this project and kept The Vernon alive.
