I love this place! Since I live off campus it's super close and convenient and is right by the commuter rail! The only downside is that it's only open on weekdays from 8-4 or 8-5 depending on the day! I recommend the Chicken Salad with Cranberries and Walnuts on French bread with onion and lettuce! If you're looking for something hot, the Chicken Pesto Panini definitely hits the spot! I come here way too often for my liking but the service is friendly and the price honestly is not terrible! Got an italian and it was pretty bomb! Dietz and watson meats, so not that special deli meat wise, and I personally like more slices cut thinner, but I'm being picky here. I used to eat here in college all the time and still go back when I can. I always get the same thing- a hummus roll-up with a little spicy sauce. It sounds simple but it is SO good. This is my favorite lunch joint in Waltham. They run a little on the pricey side (a large gourmet sub can set you back $8 or $9, and isn't overwhelmingly huge), and the menu isn't huge, but what they make, they make really well. Try the meatball sub, or the South Street Chicken Club (chicken salad, prosciutto, lettuce, and tomato... best sandwich I've had in years), or the clam chowder. They're heavily trafficked by the office park down the street, so it can be a bit of a wait if you show up at 12:30. Also, save room for a cookie. They make their own heath bar cookies, which are life-changing. (Brief addendum: after recognizing me from Yelp, the owner of the deli (who is the nicest guy you will ever meet) now roots through the heath bar cookies looking for the ones with the biggest chunks of heath bar when I come in for lunch. I think I've eaten here twice in seven years. People tell me I've just been ordering the wrong things, but I haven't been convinced to go back yet. The food is really expensive for what you get. I'm not saying $10 is too much to spend on lunch, but when you get to that kind of price you have so many better options: pasta from Domenic's, Indian lunch buffet, Thai takeout from Erawan, etc. The portions are tiny. I discovered South Street Market back when I was in college, but try to stop by whenever I am in the area. The cafe offers a variety of breakfast foods, salads, sandwiches, and wraps. I highly recommend their sandwiches on a homemade baguette, available in plain or multi-grain. Their top-quality cold cuts and delicious tuna salad make great options. They also have a variety of toppings, such as cucumbers, hot peppers, etc. Sandwiches all come in small, medium, and large. The smalls are a bit of a rip-off and better for a snack. While the prices are a bit high, South Street Market offers some of the more gourmet options in town, making it worth a try. read more

It is REALLY hard to get excited about this place for many reasons. The employees are callous at best, the prices are a little too expensive for what you're getting, and the hours are ok, but nothing special. The food SHOULD be good...but it really just is nothing special or memorable in any extent whatsoever. If I had written this last week, South Street would have gotten a solid 3.5 stars from me. I had a delectable meatball sandwich on some pretty amazing fresh bread, and even though I left having spent almost 11 dollars on sandwich, chips, and a can of Coke, I was pretty pleased. I went back today hoping to replicate the experience and try something new. Perhaps I was misled by the myriad signs proclaiming "Cranberry and Walnut Chicken Salad" but that's what I was expecting in my Chicken Club Wrap. Instead I got a little bit of shredded chicken mixed with a lot of mayo, some shredded iceburg, a few whitish tomato slices, and some chunks of what I'm assuming were pickles mixed into the lettuce. There was supposed to be prosciutto in there but if there was, it was very little. It was actually pretty gross, and I'm feeling a little ill from all the mayo. And a small wrap and bottled water set me back 10 bucks. SO not worth it. If it was just the price or just the food I might be more forgiving, but South Street left me with a bad taste in my mouth. It's actually 2 and a half stars. A ton of my friends love this place - ah, them commuter rail taking students - and often speak of it. One day, I was with a bunch of friends and ordered what they did. A half sandwich, half soup deal with a drink. My first shock was that it came up to almost $11. That did not slide well with my student budget at all! The soup (mushroom) was rather diluted and not creamy at all. My sandwich (meatball) was good, but it was small and subway puts in a ton more veggies for me. The drink, was just a drink. At the end of it all, and after $11!!, I was still hungry. On one of my recent visits, I had a medium meatball sub which wasn't "small" but it wasn't outrageously big. It was a thing of beauty...I never thought I'd say this but it was the most beautiful meatball sub I've ever seen. The center split revealed a round ball of moist redness encased in crusty golden french bread...and to my delight (because I was prepared for the crash and burn), it tasted as good as it looked. As a Brandeis commuter South Street Market beats overpaying for a meal on campus that is either super fried or really unsatisfying. As other reviewers have mentioned, just about everything else in the immediate vicinity is also pretty drab. The Chicken Club is my go-to almost every visit. I think that their medium size is a decent deal for the amount of food that you get. Just like any sub shop if you overdo it with a bag of chips or a soup and then a drink, it gets pricey. Not all of their sandwiches are created equal though, their Buffalo Chicken in particular was very disappointing and felt like more dressing and bread than anything. Not a destination spot, but for the days I'm on campus with only a half-hour for lunch I'm glad it's there. Get the punch card and after ten visits you get a free sandwich. read more

Let's just say after eating my medium tuna sub with everything on it (extra Pickles) I was so energized that I ran out onto the outside deck, jumped up on a picnic table, took my shirt off and started violently beating my chest like a gorilla and yelling at the traffic as it went by on south street. As part of the laboring masses in Waltham, I've got a plethora of lunch choices - two of which are immediately across the street from the office. South Street is the more "high end" of these choices (Cappy's is the other) and always delivers a satisfying meal. The sandwiches are well made with quality deli meat, the staff is always pleasant, and the cookies available at the counter are tremendous - highly recommend picking one up to treat yourself. The prices are a tad inflated (soda, bag of chips, and a large sandwich will set you back about $11), but not ridiculous by any stretch. I discovered South Street Market too late in the game! Only one semester to cram in as many pesto chicken sandwiches as possible! I've only had a few of their selection, but I can adamantly say that the panini's (really just hot sandwiches) are where its at. The aforementioned pesto chicken is far and away my favorite, just dripping with deliciousness. I tried the buffalo chicken and was disappointed to find out it was shredded chicken, but I asked to have it grilled and it turned out nicely. The woman behind the counter even offered to make a different sandwich when she saw the look on my face. This was a testament to just how attentive and nice the owners and employees are here. The owner is always very friendly and love to joke around. The sandwiches are above average but the people are definitely what make South St. Market worth coming to. I would be remiss if I let the heath bar crunch cookies pass without compliment. They are so freaking yummy that sometimes, it's a little hard to handle. read more
